Good episode, but it felt really fast to watch.
Kento added to the OP and ED as expected. But Ryo or Daishinji weren't yet. I feel like rintaro gag of the year will be he is the only one who never eat any sweets while the others do. Mei clearly doesn't know how to take care of a kid. Don't ever let him alone outside even in a world without kamen riders and monsters :'D Ryo finisher was badass but he doesn't really grow on me yet. Liked the CGI more in this ep. It was absolutely not overkill this time. |

In case you don’t recognise him, the kid was in a recent episode of Super Sentai (specifically, the body swap episode) as that grumpy kid Juru (and later Fire as Juru) have to cheer up.

After watching with subs :
So there is something about Kento. He says what happened 15 years ago was his fault and he should be to blame. And touma would be better not knowing. and when Sophia answers, instead of saying something like "it's not your fault" like you would normally expect, she says "don't take the blame entirely" implying it is INDEED at least part Kento's fault, plus she adds Calibur is Kento's ... without finishing. Either Calibur is a family member of Kento, or maybe he is some kind of teacher. Like Calibur and former Brave would be tutors training kids to be next seiken holders : Kento and Touma. Something like that. But then Kento did something probably forbidden out of curiosity, maybe enter the book of ancients room or something (he is based on aladdin right ? king of thieves lol) which caused Calibur to be able to gain access to it etc... EDIT : Just thinking about it. Daishinji first appearance is kinda lame. The character appears for the first time in the background and is like almost useless like he is scenery only. |

But its cool, Touma gets the lesson about making promises so easily early in the story so we can get it out of the way. |
Yup, yup. Female sidekick character acts way, way too exaggerated for my liking. Akiko was never this annoying and was always grounded to some extent. Also, will they be using CG for every single henshin and form change? It was rather excessive this episode. Hm...

Anyway this episode was a good time, I felt it was slower paced than the other episodes but that's also because it's setup is as a standard two-parter, compared to Episodes 1 and 2 which were two separate adventures going off one after another. I do find it nice that the Meggido are getting a bit smarter/aren't all doing the same song and dance with our newest one. How Touma ended up remembering Kento was cute, and it'll be interesting to see where he goes given his baggage that we're slowly being let known about. Ryo's also pretty neat, I dig that we have a dad rider immediately. Though it's clear he's a typical old man who thinks he's the one who can handle anything and is skeptical of the youth he works with. Granted, maybe Touma can win him over next week given well, what Touma does next week. |
Did I miss something or was the beginning of the episode pretty disjointed? Introduce Kento, roll the opening, then Touma and Rintaro are off to fight the bad guy again and meet Ryo? I'm wondering if they're combining scenes that were shot for different episodes or something.
It's hard not to feel like there's COVID-related compromises everywhere (maybe even places where it's not the case), but grading on a curve for that, I'm enjoying things so far and looking forward to more. And yeah, Mei needs to dial it down a bit. Or a lot. |
Still not really feeling this show. I don’t know what it is about Saber that keeps me from enjoying it. Maybe there is some sort of thought in my mind that Kamen Rider should have at least a basic standard I can enjoy, because I can watch Kiramager just fine but Saber doesn’t do a whole lot for me.
Mei is entirely useless and way too annoying, the actress should really slow it down with the overacting. Same with the bad guys really, especially the dude who constantly has this weird look on his face. Kamen Rider Buster is cool I guess, but it was kinda weird how he dropped out of nowhere and didn’t do a whole lot except straight up using his finisher. Twice. It's also kinda idiotic how this guy is like "I bring my child to every fight 'cause I’m the best" and then 5 minutes later the child is gone. Like, you’re really not that great at parenting. At all. The action was kinda boring too; just not very enjoyable with all the weird stuff Touma was pulling just to prove a point for the viewer that certain book combinations work better than others. This show is also starting the namedropping thing really early, from Touma's lost childhood friend, Calibur being Kento's... dad (?) and this Avalon thing. Not very into this show so far, I tried approaching it with the same mindset as Kiramager, that being if it's fun it's good enough for me, but Saber doesn't work the same way. Quote:

i think alot of fans that dont like saber didnt expect saber to be this light hearted, which is something that kamen rider has never done because of story book theme series which is light hearted since it's aimed towards little kids and probably covid has alot do with it too.
i enjoy it because it's different, i guess i like light hearted series, i guess it's the child in me. |

Saber is definitely proving to be a show that's subtly "off" in a lot of odd ways, but I'm also still loving what I'm seeing. Fukuda is being a flake as is usual, I guess, so despite it only being episode 3, this one was written by Nobuhiro Mouri, who of course worked with Fukuda on Ghost, and more recently wrote what a lot of people will argue are the better stretches of Zi-O. My personal image of him is as a reliably competent guest writer who also occasionally knocks a story out of the park. This one definitely felt firmly on the "reliably competent" side of things.
Above all else, this is clearly the big Buster introduction episode, and it nailed that much for sure. Ryou is just *big* in every sense of the word, and has a great sense of presence that also owes a lot to Shoujirou Nakazawa's direction and the talents of both of his actors. The script is maybe doing the minority of the work here, if I'm being honest. There are some awkward notes, like having a cold open before Buster's first scene, which is clearly meant to be an in medias res cold open, hence Touma and Rintarou just being on an adventure without explanation. There's nothing that I felt was a huge deal breaker though, and I certainly appreciated the relatively subdued pacing. That part is likely down to being part one of a larger story, which is probably a smart move for a show this tight on space. I don't think I'd mind seeing the usual two-parter formula being applied to this series going forward. And since the story is mostly setup, it's hard to say too much about, but I did think it was interesting setup, for what it's worth, working in both things for part two and some bigger questions for the show as a whole. In the moment, the most fun in the episode was definitely from Touma's inexplicably wholesome interactions with his fellow Riders, like there was a memo about this franchise nobody but Buster and Calibur got. Saber and Blades especially have this real harmonious chemistry that doesn't help the Sentai comparisons, but is making for some fun fight scenes that seem to be stressing the creative fantastical powers more than raw and exhilarating choreography. Which isn't to say that they're totally forgoing the latter, either; it's just that the above average swordplay gets a little lost in the chaos sometimes. Ordinarily, I'd be the one mourning the days of more restrained Rider shows, but for Saber, I'm really embracing the whole "beautiful mess" aspect of it, because it seems like the show itself is too, and it's definitely making for a good time so far. |
Mei is great eye candy though, if you take everything else apart.
As for her acting, chances are those are the directions she was given, seeing that the director kept these acts. |
Wow, I know the whole "bringing back past monsters" bit has been a recurring thing in Kamen Rider, but normally they seem to save it for the later arcs, when the focus shifts from MotWs to major villains. To see it already in episode 3 is... actually kind of interesting!? I like how they actually give a reason for it instead of just having past monsters show up with no explanation. I expect it means we'll see fewer unique MotWs, but that frees up more screen time to develop major characters, which is worth it IMO.
And I like how destroying the monster didn't fix the problem. In toku, you kinda get used to the idea that when a monster does something weird with its powers like trapping people in another world, defeating the monster will reverse its powers and put things back the way they should be, so having that subverted makes me feel like the situation is more dangerous. The hints of backstory we got were interesting too. Calibur's design always makes me think of lightning, so my guess is that he was the previous Espada and Kento's teacher. |
Saber continues to be utterly underwhelming. Characters are annoying, the action is nothing special, and I'm just left bored for most of the episode.
I can't get heated and upset, I'm just...Bored. Here's to hoping something interesting happens. |

Some people tend to forget that light hearted does not necessarily mean boring, and like what IndigoArms said, it could be intentionally light-hearted. And besides, this is a kids show. |
In my opinion; saber is the same as wizard: a bastardized take on something I greatly enjoy that fills me with nothing but utter disapointment. Looks like I will be sitting this season out unless it gets dark and serious quickly

I just find this series dull. It's moving too quickly for the nonstop stream of character introductions to have any weight, the characters we have are either annoying or bland as all hell, the villain scenes come and go so quickly that I honestly still have no idea what their agenda is, and the action leaves a lot to be desired despite 2 of the powers involving creating a giant beanstalk and portal generation. |

I kinda liked this episode. My biggest problems are the problems I had with the first two episodes: the pacing and the acting. It felt like less was skipped over, but there were still places where the story jumped ahead faster than it should have (I'm especially thinking Saber and Blades suddenly in a monster fight after the opening credits). Similarly, I wish that I liked the big fight scene more, but the overuse of transformation and attack stock footage absolutely killed the pacing there, too. I get that it saves money and possible Covid exposure, but it's reaching R/B levels of over-use. Touma and Mei's actors really need to tone it down. I almost always hate comedic overacting in tokusatsu and these two are the worst examples we've had in quite some time. Mei is already on par with Shunpei for me in terms of being annoying. That's still sub-Onari, but it's still way up there. I am interested in the Rider Dad's story, but he's another case of over-selling the personality and I find it hard to sympathize with him much. |
OMGodzilla this series is boring AF so far, such a sheer departure from previous seasons,(Build,Ex-Aid,Amazons,Drive.Zi-O,a fun clusterf*ck,and Zero-One) it just turns me off with it's childish Sentai like feel, and the single most annoying side character since W's Akiko in Mei. Just UGH so far...I just expect more in a well established Toku show series like KR than this kiddie stuff...quickly becoming the new "Ghost" to me
|
After coming off of a high with Zero-One, there's something missing for me with Saber but for as fast as this series has gone so far, I feel it's only scratching the surface and it's going to slow burn into something. Not giving up on this yet.

people should calm down with Mei.
Im one of the guy who doesn't like Akiko, but Mei is kinda okay because her screentime isn't that much compared to akiko already. I can understand people not liking her making big-eyed faces but come on. it's episode 3 and we barely see her already. Ep1 I could understand the annoyance, she was here all along and screaming for 20min. Ep2 she kinda disappeared half way the episode so we can focus on Saber and Blades CGI fight Ep3 she made a remark about her eclair, then she explains to Ryo Touma is a novelist (and the scene isn't even about her really). the only scene she has is the one with the kid outside. After that she just say sorry and she's gone. How is 3 or 4min in a 20+min ep too much to the point of being damn annoying and they need to tone down ? I'm ready to bet people who dislike her the most have no problem with poppy screaming "dai pipupepo panic dayooooooo" occasionaly People should get used to it. The show will be cramped with characters (and male characters as far as we know) with the number of riders and vilain teased already. Mei will obviously have less screen time "thanks" to that as the show will progress, but in return her scenes will have her stand out at max level (for the kid to remember her among all the cool swordsmen) it's unavoidable. |

The thing about Mei is that the initial setup of a character that is so curious and easily fascinated that it passes as bravery isn't even half-bad. In the first episode she was fine really.
It started going downhill fast though with that ludicrous stunt of her crashing the bicycle into the other world portal on purpose only to play damsel in distress later or how she goes outside with a kid this time only to turn her back on him immediately, leaving him alone for no real reason. All that combined with that super fake hyperactive acting and the character is already kinda done for me. I'm trying to stay optimistic but so far it isn’t paying off with this show. |

You should see the 2nd where he looks adorably proud of it. |
Really looking forward to what he does when the Hansel & Gretel wonder ride book appears. I bet he goes full Cookie Monster. :lolol
