Goshikida Kaito, Tanjoubi Omedetou! Last time confirmed his birthday as December 12th and now the year of his birth is confirmed as 2000, making him a year younger than my headcanon, which is closer to Komagine's age.
As I suspected, the Gears of the most financially successful Kyoryuger and Gokaiger were being saved for last in this episode which celebrates Kaito's birthday, Christmas and New Year all at once! Kyoryuger Gear's effect seems to support my headcanon that they previously used it offscreen in Episode 13. It was smart of Zenkaizer to use the Gokaiger Gear in conjunction with the Zenryoku Zenkai Cannon summons to wield Shinken Red's Rekka Daizanto. The most popular Gears are Sun Vulcan, Hurricanger, Goseiger, Zyuohger, Kyuranger and Kiramager. Unfortunately, Kaito's birthday lands on a Sunday this year, which means Tozitendo are obliged to disrupt the celebration, as Shougatsu Wald's gimmick compels everybody to celebrate New Year over and over again. The solution to this problem is thinking outside the box as expected of Zenkaiger, by turning their fight in to a festive event. In a meta way, that's a pretty apt way to describe Zenkaiger. It's a full power full force celebration of Super Sentai that makes this show enjoyable, as well as the deep themes and morals this show excels at delivering consistently every week. It's a statement that even as the New Year heralds a new Sentai, that doesn't diminish the importance of Zenkaiger and everything great about this show! The mecha fight is a standout scene as well, with Zenryoku Eagle getting to save the day and Zenkai Oh JuraGaon wielding it in cannon mode supported by VrooMagine and Twokai Oh Cuttanar to perform a giant version of the finisher on Giant Shougatsu Wald! It feels like all the epicness of a typical Christmas episode, except it's still 2 more weeks until the actual Christmas episode and based on the dramatic arrival of Hakaiju Oh in the cliffhanger, it could be awesome!

This episode was weird, but fun! I enjoyed that it took your typical time loop situation, but did something different in that rather than being in an actual look, every hour they just...Forgot all their problems and stopped caring. I love it!
This episode's fight was rather nice in that we got to see the Zenryoku Eagle in action again as well as TwoKai Oh (As well as Twokaiser's Ricky and Cuttaner forms) getting some love. Hakaizer's mech has appeared, and it seems Stacey's dilemma has only grown further. Can't wait to see what happens next! ...As well as the complete momentum stopper that will be the Christmas episode after that

Funny thing is- the episode after next is going to be the 26th- too late for an actual Christmas episode unless they make it about 'Whoops, we missed Christmas!' Pretty zenkai brained to get distracted with Bon and New Years and Dramatic Plot and let the obvious Christmasworld episode fly right by them, huh?

I really love ZenkaiOh JuraGaon, ZenkaiOh VroonMagine, and TwoKaiOh are used again. The finisher using Zenryoku Zenkai Cannon in giant version is really interesting.
In my opinion, the Gokaiger Gear ability is really boring. I personally prefer if Gokaiger Gear are able to transforms Zenkaigers into other Rangers. Examples: - Zenkaiser become Akaranger - Zenkai Juran become Tyranno Ranger - Zenkai Gaon become Gao Yellow - Zenkai Magine become Magi Pink - Zenkai Vroon become Bouken Blue - TwoKaiser become Gokai Red |

There are an awful lot of Zenkaiger plots that can be summed up as "a monster does something that makes people do weird funny things", so this close to the end of the series, it feels like an appropriate twist for the heroes to defeat one of those monsters by realizing the funniest thing of all – the Zenkaigers are already weirder all on their own. Seriously, that's gotta be the peak for this brand of episode, right? You try to control Kaito and the gang by making them think it's time for a holiday every hour, and then they just come at you decked out for a party, because they've decided their job is so fun it IS the party. That really is the spirit of the whole show, at the end of the day. It's also a legitimate positive message about the value of going into things with an optimistic attitude, and how that can make something fun. Leave it to Zenkaiger to somehow still be telling a proper story even when it's goofing off this much! They even left things on a very classically Sentai-y cliffhanger, too. A lot of little touches in the execution here impressed me, as well. The payoff of those deliberately drawn-out, repetitive New Year's greetings was fantastic, for one thing. I'm also especially fond of that shot at the start where it's just this long POV of the monster getting yelled at by everyone, which works wonders to sell how upset they are. At first I just liked it because it was funny and cute, but in the context of the rest of the episode, it's also maybe smart for how it conveys that the team is too upset, that they're all awkwardly shoving each other around for a turn in this dude's personal space instead of, you know, actually getting ready to transform and fight? Not that there's even much point to trying to analyze this one. Sure, the script may make room for all of the above, plus laying the dramatic groundwork for next time with the villains, which is all good and everything, but a lot of the fun of it just ends up coming simply from how elaborate the fight scenes are. It's that time of year when, ~for some reason~, Sentai shows always seem to remember all the toys that have gotten lost in the shuffle over time, and Zenkaiger is more than happy to keep the tradition going. You've got some nice straightforward Sentai Gear usage, a bunch of giant robots we barely see anymore (including Battle Caesar Robo!!!), and hey, Zox even remembered his little brothers exist! Kind of a shame he doesn't remember more often, because I always thought those two extra forms added a lot of cool flavor to the show. As fun as the pirate shtick already is, it's neat seeing Twokaiser busting out such radically different fighting styles on occasion. Tell me that explosion when he punched Stacaesar's shield wasn't awesome. There's an awful lot of variety to the action this week, so basically whatever you could possibly want to see from Zenkaiger was in there somewhere. Utterly delightful finish to an episode that was already a great time.

They certainly pulled out all the stops this episode!
Not only do we get to see Jyuragaon, but all of Twokaiser's forms, mechs, more Sentai Gears (Samba power Kyoryuger and swapping power Gokaiger), and Battle Caesar Robo returns! Combined with Zenkaiger's trademark zaniness, beating the Monster of the Week with party powers, and we've got ourselves more Zenkaiger gold. It's also funny how Kaito and I are the same age this year. Since I've been sick this past week, I'm just going to leave off here, and eventually get around to catching up with Revice. Next Episode: It's the final showdown with Hakaiser! (maybe...) |
