I mean, it's not like he's COMPLETLEY foreign to slice-of-life and other non body horror despair stories. He made this after all. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...4,203,200_.jpg He is foreign to not making things look creepy though. |
Oh, of course. Plenty of writers create stories that you wouldn't expect.
I'm just going by what I know of the guy :lol |

If someone only likes Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, would they still be view as Toku fans? I see people on Facebook telling other fans that they are not real Toku fans if they only like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai.

You like Rider? You’re a Tokusatsu fan. Same with Sentai, Ultraman or whatever, you’re not measured by how much or different stuff you watched. Enjoying what you like and seeking more is all it takes. |
Is Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future considered part of the "Western-Toku" group the same as Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills or Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad and the like?
|
Probably, but it’s kind of a weird case because it predates Power Rangers by several years.
|
I don't see why it wouldn't be considered as such.
|
If this site considers Pacific Rim to be Toku, won't movies like Cloverfield and Rampage be consider to be Toku as well?

Tokusatsu itself is a weird term. Hideaki Anno himself believes it's a uniquely Japanese form of making special effects heavy movies while others believe it's anything that's special effects heavy. (which paints a very broad definition) In English speaking fanbases, transforming heroes are regularly misidentified as the sole definition of what tokusatsu is.

To me, Toku is a movie or TV show that are heavy special effects from Japan. You have human size monster movies from Japan like The Green Slime, Matango, Half Human, Zeiram, etc that are still consider to be Toku. You even have Disaster, Sci-Fi, War and Action movies that are heavy with special effects that are still consider to be Toku like Virus (Not to be confused with the 1999 film of the same name), Japan Sinks, The War in Space, The Mysterians, Prophecies of Nostradamus, etc.
I don't like calling movies and TV shows like Pacific Rim, Cloverfield, Rampage and the CW DC superhero shows as Toku. If The Flash was made in Japan, I would view it as Toku. |
To me, tokusatsu is Japanese live action shows/movies with "suitmation" techniques.
|
It's all a case of technicality vs personal views, as basically most action show in the west falls under Tokusatsu due to it's actual definition.
However, I'm also under the agreement of most everyone else here as well. |
Mystic knights was that bad ?

Could the time slot was responsible for Dragon knight failure ?

I think that Tokusatsu is just special effects shows.
I do lean more towards the transforming hero genre. But I honestly think that any show/film that uses heavy special effects is and can be considered "Tokusatsu". I don't really like relegating certain terms to just one country. Just feels close-minded. Despite "Japanese animation/anime" having a distinct style, I consider it to be "animation", same as any Western show (Miraculous, SVTFOE, Gravity Falls, etc.). In that same vein, any country can make "Tokusatsu" (i.e. Doctor Who, Power Rangers, France Five, Armor Hero, BIMA Satria Garuda, etc.). But Tokusatsu from Asia- largely Japan, but I mean Asia as a whole- has a quirkiness to it that I can't put into words. ...Not sure how much sense that makes, honestly. To put my thoughts on Toku being "only from Japan" simply: A product can be made by anyone. But a person's unique style can have a difference that sets it apart from the work of someone else who makes the same thing. ____________ As for what I'm watching... hrmm. Gonna rewatch Legend Hero. |
I wish Masked rider and Vr troopers had a proper ending back in the day.
|
Has anyone here seen Pulgasari?
|
I have and it's pretty bad. The story of how Pulgasari got made is better than the film itself to be honest.
|
Is anybody ever going to pin the "other toku series fansubs" topic? I'm getting really sick of digging through multiple pages every time I want to find it.
|
Bookmark that page. No more digging to find it.
|
I thought about doing that but it really seems like the kind of thing that should be pinned

Why were Kyodyne/Kyodain (forgive the spelling if there are discrepancies), "revived" for the Kamen Rider Fourze Movie and Super Hero Taisen Z as straight-up villains!? It just seemed like such a sucker-punch to the old show (which I have not seen), where the duo were heroes! DaiTetsujin 17 was also re-imagined in the same entry (XVII is the name for the newer version even though it's just the Roman numeral for "17"), but the effect seemed both grand and underdone simultaneously and the detailing was little bland if only by comparison! I also know that Akumaizer 3 was also re-imagined in a separate Kamen Rider Movie, and like Kyodyne (Kyodain), as straight-up villains!!!
Why is Toei reviving the older classics as villains!? Sure, the inclusions in the Movies are meant to be a nod to the older days, but it seems like it could offend fans, young and old, by changing the origins and nature of the characters! Granted, villains who are loosely inspired by older heroes takes "loosely" a tad literally and really is meant to be inspiration in design and name only, but it still doesn't feel like the best judgment call! I do think Kyodyne (Kyodain) get a little redemption moment with their actions and feelings for each other in Super Hero Taisen Z, but they still could've played it differently from the onset! |
So is there a particular reason both kikaider and zubat carry around acoustic guitars? Or is it just because guitars are cool.

What are some Toku shows and movies made this decade that people from 10-15 years ago wouldn’t believe you about if you traveled back in time and put everything in context? Like if you went back to the year 2003 or 2008 to tell them about the future of Toku in the 2010s?

Did you think it was cool when Ultraman Mebius brought back the actors from older shows? Get used to that, especially if you’re a Sentai fan. Toei remembered Metal Heroes. By 2018, you will be able to buy official translations of Super Sentai and Garo and legally stream Ultraman. |
Found an article on early Toku Heroes and why Moonlight Mask didn't last long!
Also posted the same link in the "Happy 60th Anniversary to Gekko Kamen (Moonlight Mask)" Discussion Thread. http://www.tokunation.com/showthread.php?p=721266 http://tokusatsunetwork.com/2014/03/...-early-heroes/ |

The Tokusatsu GaGaGa by Tanba Niwa is getting a live-action adaptation, which I guess will make it a "legitimate" Tokusatsu entry!
Didn't know about this franchise prior to hearing about the live-action news. http://ukiyaseed.weebly.com/ukiyasee...n-drama-series http://tokusatsunetwork.com/2018/09/...ies-announced/ For those who know, how is the original manga and where can one find it? |
Why the last two american ultraman fail ?

I've heard of a rumor in which Toho produced a version of King Kong, possibly in '37. This might make it the first REAL tokusatsu production EVER, but given the timing and world events, it was supposedly lost with a few people from the era claiming that it did exist and they did work on it.
Is this true or just rumor? |
I think you mean King Kong Appears in Edo and yes, it was a real movie. It was done by Zensho Cinema, not Toho. Fuminori Ohashi even considers it to be the first Toku ever. Godzilla 1954 was not the first Toku, but it was the first major one that helps create Toku that we know today.
|
It's TRUE. The very 1st Tokusatsu movies was NOT Godzilla 54,but a King Kong REMAKE for Japanese audiences. There are NO images that I know of,unless Ed Godzewski or Sean Linkenback (both Godzilla authors and historians) know of it,all prints were destroyed in WW2,but I believe the release date WAS 1937,early 1938...lemme see if I can ask Sean ,since he is also a Poster guy as well. But it DID happen!!

I look up,and realize someone beat me to this, kudos on the knowledge my friend!
