Power Rangers Cosmic Fury Discussion Thread!
The batch has dropped and the latest season of Power Rangers is now available on Netflix!
PLEASE TAG ALL SPOILERS. |
Plowed through all 10 in one sitting (minus a couple of pauses for various reasons).
It's definitely got callbacks and it's the story that helps cement it. You would think this would be an issue given how the Kyuranger footage is handled, and you aren't wrong, but the story and the PR-Exclusive elements definitely help it. The use of Monster suits from Kyuranger is all over the place, and don't expect each one to be used either. Some are just shoved into a scene to help pad the scene with more Monsters. Oh, and several suits aren't even from Kyuranger. They aren't always used in the manner that you would expect either. Zedd's voice isn't "Over-dubbed Archive Footage in Beast Morphers" bad, but it isn't the same as Dino Fury either. If I read the credits right, I think it's a well-known voice actor. You can tell that this follows Once & Always with little trouble and it definitely recycles some of those elements too. Would definitely recommend that you see Dino Fury at least once before heading into this. Is it great? It's solid, but far from perfect. Is it a possible bookend to 30 years worth of continuity? I wouldn't go that far, and I would surmise that only a few fans would, but I can see how a corporate mindset could interpret it that way. Is the finale of the final battle a little different from what you would expect in Power Rangers, but still strangely appropriate given the tone of the franchise? Yes. Am I thrilled at the prospect that this could be the End of an Era with the rumor of a possible hardcore reboot coming? Not completely. Can I accept this story as is, regardless of what the future does or doesn't hold? Yes. If I myself were adapting Kyuranger, is this how I would have done it? Absolutely not! Do I think some Kyuranger aspects could still be revisited in the future, especially if the rumored hardcore reboot fails? Definitely! I tried to avoid spoilers since we aren't seeing too many remarks yet. Do hope this interests those who are still hesitant about this, though. |
so just watched it enjoyed it
but the rumor of a reboot after this just kills it for me really brings it down as i want them to continue this story and the plot seeds that they sprinkled at the end i also just hate reboots always find them less then the original and just a lazy cash grab and is what took me out of comic books do to the big 2 constantly doing that if that reboot rumor did not exist this season would have easily been a 9 out of 10 for me as is. if it is never followed up on even with specials it's down to a 5 or 6 out of 10 though. |
10 episodes, and it feels rushed as hell. The new characters had barely any development or lasting impressions, the returning characters were shoehorned in the middle of the plot without enough buildup, and the sense of urgency they had didn't feel as strong as it should be due to the not having enough breathing space to let things settle in.
I can't tell if it was the same for MMPR season 2 or 3 when they switched Zords but kept the suits, but the Cosmic Zords didn't feel connected to the Rangers or their powers. They didn't even bother to change their powers to match the Zords so it was all over the place. |

just no one over analyzes season 2 to noticed how little that makes any sense at all the t-rex become the red dragon and the pterodactyl becoming the pink phoenix are the only 2 that makes sense. as we have a triceratops becoming a unicorn and a sabertooth tiger becoming a griffin and lets not even get into the black mastodon becoming a green lion season 3 wile they got new powers that matched the new zords the suits did not change to reflect this and still had the dino themed suites and a tiger. and the tiger uses a bird |

- The Zyuranger suits were still popular and the overall face of the franchise, which was still in its infancy. - The Zyu2 footage bookended Season 1, and they still had plenty of it by the time Season 2 came around. The overall implication is that the footage and those Monster suits weren't cheap. - The Dairanger Kidenju were able to pad the toyline and increase sales, which was Saban's main agenda. - I came across something years ago that offered a suggestion regarding Dairanger suits. When the show became popular, imitators and knockoffs came out of the woodwork, and some of those knockoffs at Mom-and-Pop shops looked vaguely like Dairanger suits. The person who mentioned that gave no definitive answer as to whether that was an influencing reason, but it's still worth thinking about. - The transformation in every episode from Dinozord-to-Thunderzord may have seemed superfluous, but it did help remind the viewer of what's transpired and why the Zords don't echo the suits anymore. - Since Sei Shishi was for a Green Ranger, the U.S. release of the Lion Thunderzord had more black and less green for obvious reasons. - Season 3 echoes many of the points already mentioned, but it was also a time in which they were trying to do more original stuff. - Season 3 was also a time in which parental complaints started to have an effect on the show's development. Notice how the Rangers have abandoned their personal weapons and use Saba and the Blade Blasters rather sparingly. - The switch to Alien Rangers allowed them to rely on more Sentai footage for small and giant battles, but original material was still required. This is merely a short overview as to why some things were done the way they were, and I don't claim to be the greatest authority on this subject. For more on Zyu2, this essay is essential: https://www.grnrngr.com/zyu2/essay The problem is that someone in the here and now thought that the circumstances of the past would lead to success in the present. Things were different then, no matter how cliched that answer is. Success isn't easy to replicate, either. It's also possible that these nearly 30 year old discrepancies were why the show was starting to run out of steam and switched to Zeo to try and save face and toy sales. |

I don't think Hasbro tried to do it like thirty years ago. It seems to me more like they wanted to try a new direction but still keep the show cheap, which is impossible if you completely cut ties with Sentai. It even seems to me that we would have seen the Kyuranger costumes (but not all of them) if Dino Fury had not been the most popular show in PR for the last five years at least.

I disagree it was very easy to tell sense to he zord being piloted picture was on the back wall. Never once was I confused on who was in what and swapping zords always felt to me something that should have been possible. Like wild force/ gaoranger but taken a step father. Who also used zords that did not match colors and also had more zords then rangers by a much larger number then cosmic fury |

Yes all out of universe reasons that cosmic fury also has but yet no one complains about mmpr 2 and 3 but instead makes excuses for them instead. Not saying one is better then the other but should be judged the same |

Episode 1:
Looks like anybody who was worried about the Morphin' Masters bailing the Rangers out again can relax now. Bajilia managed to capture all six of them in the same place, which is a pretty big boast for a villain we only just met! I was also surprised to see that Black, Yellow and Pink were even alive, considering how Red mentioned that they'd lost some of their members and this is our first time seeing them outside of flashbacks. Does that mean there used to be even more than six? Either way, the Rangers won't be defeating Zedd with any manufactured miracles this time. Pretty much everything goes wrong for them here, to the point that getting the Cosmic Fury Zords feels more like a reprieve than a victory. So, not only are the Masters captured, but Ollie has been brainwashed again, Zayto who was revived less than half an hour ago has been flung to unknown space and Javi had to vaporize his right arm to summon those aforementioned Zords. Episode 2: Fortunately, they also have Billy and Mick helping out now. Billy and Solon made a new prosthetic arm for Javi (which is in fact that arm we saw in the poster), while Mick is searching the local galaxies for Zayto. I wonder how Javi would get along with Dillon, a fellow cyborg Black Ranger with little sister. How will Warden Buzzkill react when he finds out what happened? It's humorous how Aiyon treats Billy as a junior, even after the other Rangers point out that Aiyon was unconscious for most of his long life. I appreciate how the comedy seems more balanced here, like even Jane and J-Borg don't take too much screentime away from the serious plot. Squilia being a streamer isn't something I expected either, but it kind of works in Mucus' and Slyther's absence (hope they come back!). Look at her Lord Zedd shirt! Somehow, the situation gets even worse for the Rangers. It's basically a repeat of the Dino Fury Season 1 finale with Dinohenge getting destroyed, but of course, no Master Green to throw them a save. Only the triceratops statue gets spared due to Ollie still being brainwashed. Solon had to emergency transport the base to another galaxy and without the Rangers' powers, they're stuck there, with Fern. Episode 3: Amelia is red now and guess what, there's a perfectly good explanation for that.... Which we actually get to hear! I had already accepted her as Cosmic Fury Red based on the leadership qualities she displayed in Dino Fury, but it's cool how these 3 episodes draw attention to that by forcing her to take Zayto's place. The way she takes charge of saving Ollie and trying to cure him and being supportive of emotionally distressed Aiyon. Seems like the only one who didn't see those qualities was Amelia herself, but I think the Morphin' Grid was right to choose her for sure. Kudos to Billy as well for creating the Cosmic Fury powers and I guess, giving all those fans who were ticked off by the dinosaur motif someone to blame, haha. And y'know what, I'll just say it, I actually don't mind the new suits, generally speaking. I'll even say that I prefer them to the Kyuranger suits, which is kind of a low bar IMO! Evil Ollie is pretty interesting to watch, with how Ollie is already known to be a smug know-it-all a**hole sometimes and then the evil part turns that up even further. Like, I think the actor does a good job making him seem intimidating and deceptive as a temporary villain in a way that I didn't get from Evil Javi or Izzy. He reminds me a lot of Evil Tommy actually. This was totally a strong start! Looking forward to watching the next few episodes! |

i was talking about the fandom at large. the amount of people that have ever complained about the season 2 is an extremely small sub set while the amount complaining about cosmic fury is the majority. trying to toss this "well technically" as an argument does not really change any thing at all. and yes they 100% should be judged the same showing favor to one of the other does neither any favors |

those are 2 separate statements my guy the 3 comments statements was about this thread. it's own statement separated from the second part where i talk about the fandom at large outside of this message board i see there is zero reason to continue this if that is hard to notice or figure out. as i have no idea how i could have made it even more clear. |
Episode 4:
If this season is doing the Mystic Force thing of having 2-word episode titles, then this episode title is chea ting. Or, now that I think about it, maybe it's actually a clever way of showing that the teamwork is broken. Two out of the four monsters on Ollie's team are adapted from Sentai generals. There's Scorpio from Kyuranger who has a very different personality and Nalia from Zyuohger, which sadly makes me think the latter show isn't going to get adapted. Unless they write her out, but that would mean they'd have to make new footage for the monster enlargement scenes. Speaking of Ollie's team, it's interesting how this episode makes a point that even though he's evil now, he's still operating cognitively like a Ranger, preaching teamwork and tactics that his allies don't seem to understand. Lord Zedd claims this methodology is the reason he keeps losing, like evil and teamwork are mutually exclusive. Like, I believe that he believes that, but based on the fact that Ollie survived the encounter while all his allies got destroyed by not following his advice, maybe Zedd should reconsider his own methodology instead. For critics of the Cosmic Fury suits, maybe they'd appreciate the more familiar aesthetic of the new Dino Fury Evil Blue Ranger? Feels like they're setting up Cosmic Fury Blue to be the Sixth Ranger at this point, since even Zenith debuts before him. Turns out Ollie's new triceratops-themed weapon actually comes from his Evil Blue suit, even though we see Cosmic Fury Blue using it in the poster as well. I wonder if Evil Blue claiming that Red doesn't suit Amelia is a shot at the people who thought she was unfit to lead? They rescued Zayto, but Aiyon is concerned that something is wrong with him. Can't read his mind anymore. The tree's ominous line about enjoying the time he has left. The fact that his white Dino Fury suit was called Ghost Ranger. Aiyon has an almost infallible perception of anything that can go wrong, so if he's worried, then we should definitely be worried. Maybe the Dino Master Saber killed Zayto extra hard, as the Masters creating a weapon deadly to its wielder wouldn't be a problem if they could revive him like they did for Steel. It would explain why they only revived Zayto after Zedd's escape 6 months later, instead of doing it right away. Episode 5: And there's Bungray from Zyuohger as Ollie's new ally. Like Javi, he also has a prosthetic arm, since I guess the clone-making arm is still attached to the Cubal suit. Honestly, if Super Mega Force can remove Basco, then I think Bungray is even more expendable to a potential adaption, considering he's not even a Deathgalien. Izzy singing heavy metal to an audience of monsters wasn't something I expected to see here, but it's entertaining to see what kind of creative crazy episode plots the staff can come up with when they don't have Sentai ground fight footage to rely on. We get some development for the Fern/Izzy dynamic, with Fern trying to be more useful and equal while Izzy sees her as someone who needs her protection. It's not as big a problem as Amelia/Ollie currently being morally opposed, but I can understand why Fern feels an imbalance in their relationship, considering they used to be competitive rivals. Hmm, if only she could become a Ranger.... Fitting that Zenith gets to be the first one to pilot the Cosmic Dragon Zord, as Rocky also went from tyrannosaurus to dragon. I like the beige color on him, but maybe purple would've made more sense to match this Zord and also as a reference to his connection to Void Knight's power. |
I just got done binging all of it. All I'll say for now is that I came out it in utter despair and that I feel like this is easily the weakest season of the entire franchise.
|
Episode 6:
Oh hey, Fern became a Ranger already. Everybody joins Cosmic Fury before Ollie apparently. Orange's helmet is repainted from Red's, except the gold details are different to show that she uses the power of solonosaurus instead of ankylosaurus, so I think it's distinct enough. Her weapon is just a big rake though, which doesn't seem as practical as the others. It does have a chain function that provides some extra range, but I imagine that also makes it more difficult to hit. Zayto used the power of Master Red's staff to find Solon's location in the caves, which as Billy points out is an ability only the Morphin Masters should have. Reminds me of Mack becoming the Red Sentinel Ranger, with the implication here that Zayto might not be a regular Rafkonian anymore. He also got dizzy after, so this must be connected to the tree's warning, like there's a limit to how much power he can use. However, I can't blame him for taking the risk, since Solon was way too close to becoming scuttleworm lunch. Episode 7: So, there's this Deathryuger counterpart, the Dark Ranger, who I vaguely recall seeing on the cover of one of the PR comics somewhere. As I haven't been keeping up on comic lore since Shattered Grid and I've yet to watch Dino Charge either, this guy is totally new to me. Anyway, he's in a love triangle with Squilia and the counterpart to Kuervo from Kyuranger, which ends with Dark Ranger revealing himself as a catfish and abducting Squilia, while Kuervo is so pathetic that Tarrick doesn't even need Void Knight powers to destroy him. This subplot is so random! More on Zayto's condition, now that Aiyon and Solon have basically forced the truth out of him. So yeah, his life is on a timer, which hastens towards the end everytime he uses Morphin' Master magic. He speculates that the Masters might be able to cure him once they're rescued, but with the severe threat to Earth from Zedd, Zayto continues to use his magic often and swore Aiyon and Solon to secrecy so the others won't worry about him. Damn! Did the Dino Master Saber merge Zayto with the Grid? Did the Masters bestow upon him their power, knowing there was a possibility that Bajilia would capture them? There's so much they're not telling. Episode 8: Mucus and Slyther are back! :D And they're officially good guys! Squilia's gimmick kind of got old after a few episodes, so I'm glad this calamari was only the appetizer before the real main course. Can this show get any better? Mucus regrettably becoming human is even more tragic when you consider how quickly Rafkonians integrated in to human culture, so she probably could've waited a few months and then people would've accepted her as her Sporix self. Surprising to see PR tackle a moral about body dysmorphia here, but I think it's important to show that even if you think someone looks okay, they may hate the way they look and their feelings are valid. Of course, being indestructible also has its benefits, especially for a magic show. Nice of Zayto to use his magic to reverse Mucus' change, similar to how Master Green turned Steel human like he wanted. Tarrick's line, "I know how evil they are cause I was their evil boss", sounds totally hypocritical though, like, sure, Mucus is originally one of the Sporix that destroyed Rafkon, but Tarrick literally created Slyther with the intention to commit evil deeds, so, Tarrick is pretty much entirely to blame for that until Void Queen took over. Did he learn nothing from how hard he had to try to make Zayto believe he changed, when Zayto was also hypocritical for ignoring his own liability in Rafkon's destruction? These guys should be a little more self-aware. Mucus and Slyther, while disguised as a lawyer and Squilia (since the real one was recently destroyed) respectively, infiltrated Zedd's palace and blew up the triceratops statue to try and sever Ollie's corrupted connection to the Grid, but apparently he's still evil. I don't buy it though. I think Ollie is pretending now and that he only claimed "make them suffer for betraying their emperor" as an evil-sounding excuse to prevent Zedd from destroying Slyther (since Mucus would've been fine regardless). It could be ironic and satisfying if Ollie actually uses Zedd's evil advice against him. Zayto's secret is now fully out in the open to his team, by his own confession after realizing how hard it must've been for Aiyon and Solon to have to act like nothing was wrong while they were actually worried about him. Reminds me of Kiramager where Takamichi tried to delay Mabusheena's curse by keeping her unaware, but the others were depressed for keeping it to themselves. If you want to keep such a painful secret to yourself, then that's your will, but once someone else finds out, then it's not fair to make them suffer for your secret, so I'm glad Zayto apologized to them here. |

Man this sounded like a dumpster fire.
EDIT: For some reason I can't upload the image, but what it is was was an X chat about the BTS and production problems of Cosmic Fury. Like for example, the reason Master Zedd didn't have a fight scene was because of how fragile the suit was. |

I'm starting to miss the Saban Brands era, at least there was a steady income of Sentai DVD releases. |
Episode 9:
I've noticed that the Cosmic Fury powers are kind of limited compared to Dino Fury. Like, if they had the Cosmic Dino Key, they could've simply portaled their way out of Zedd's exploding base and Zayto wouldn't have needed to sacrifice himself. I must also agree with Fern that the Zentinels using their Cosmic Blaster was a letdown. You'd think it would have some kind of Grid authentication system or something, right? It's almost humorous how many times their super weapon actually hinders them more than it helps them in these last 2 episodes. However, these powers were hastily thrown together by Billy and Solon in a single day, so that might explain their lack of functionality. I called it! Ollie was totally pretending to still be evil after the triceratops statue's destruction, allowing him to keep Slyther alive and warn the others about Zedd's (Morphin') Master Plan. Ollie and Slyther have a nice interaction as well, with Olllie worrying about whether his team will forgive him and Slyther, who did a lot more evil deeds than him, reassuring him that he can still redeem himself. Sure enough, Amelia is immediately concerned for him. I mentioned before that their ship lacked setup, so I appreciate how their separation brings Amelia's feelings for him to the foreground. I was actually invested in seeing them back together! Anyway, Zenith's out of the picture, so I guess Cosmic Fury Blue is basically the Sixth Ranger by default now, even though he doesn't meet much of the criteria for one. He doesn't get to do much actually, since he has the misfortune of debuting against Master Zedd and spends most of his screentime rolling for cover. Doesn't even get to pilot a Cosmic Fury Zord before Zedd destroys them. But hey, at least he's more helpful than the Cosmic Blaster. Episode 10: The resolution to Master Zedd feels like a Ryusoulger reference. Just like how Koh persuaded Heras to believe in the goodness of Ryusoul Tribe and Druidon, here we have Zayto, uh.... Master Beige and the Cosmic Fury Rangers persuading Zedd to give up his power since he can't be emperor anymore if his power kills him. In a franchise full of violence, it's an intriguing twist to have the final boss defeated by words. Oh yeah, Master Beige, so that's a thing now. Zayto's mortal life is over for good, but his godlike new form surprises even his fellow Masters. I guess it must have been the will of the Grid itself, further explaining why it chose Amelia to replace him as Red. They never explained the significance of the Zenith Ranger name though, given to him by the Masters. It means "the top", which sounds appropriate for someone who would rule over the Grid and yet the Masters had no idea about this development at all. Sadly, this also makes the ending bittersweet, since Zayto has to bid farewell to all his friends and start his new life in the Grid. Are Warden Buzzkill and his wife implied to know about the Rangers' secret identities now? Javi and Izzy mentioned they would explain to them later about the backstory for the prosthetic arm and we don't get to hear that explanation. So, I presume they came out with the truth? I mean, Ollie's mother knows, Amelia's Pop-Pop knows, it only seems fair for the Garcias to find out as well. Aiyon met an avatar of Zordon in the Grid! It has to be him, right? He said his catchphrase and everything. At the end of Once and Always, Billy decided to continue his quest to bring back Zordon, so this is a hopeful revelation for him. From what I heard, this is the last we'll be seeing of this continuity for the foreseeable future, so it leaves Billy's quest open-ended. It also leaves Lord Zedd's fate open-ended, with Zayto saying even he might be redeemed someday. The Zordon Wave did turn him good before, so I suppose it's not totally impossible that he could change on his own. But this is the Emperor of Evil himself we're talking about here, so who knows what his future may hold? Overall, I thought Cosmic Fury was an awesome conclusion to this trilogy of characters! It was a very ambitious project, which I think could've benefited more from a 20 episode run due to a little filler and fanservice taking up the limited time, but otherwise I mostly got out of it what I wanted to see. The season was consistently driven by its strongly developed characters and their personal stakes in the fast-paced story. Every episode left me in suspense to see what was going to happen next and it was nice to see so many returning characters and elements from previous shows! If you enjoyed Dino Fury as much as I did, then I would totally recommend Cosmic Fury! Honestly, other than the upcoming movie, I have no idea what's next for the franchise. If it's really a fresh start, then maybe a Zenkaiger adaption could work. Their powers could pay tribute to the teams that came before, while still telling a new story in a new continuity. Like how New Powers worked for Super Mega Force. EDIT: 1900th post! |

Well if Hasbro wants to do this from the ground up hopefully it won't be like MMPR 2017.
Hasbro and Netflix want to pull a Mystic Knights Of Tir Na Nog and make it 100 without Toei. Should this happen in 2025 , and we hold at a 10 chapter per year drop - that might put us long time watchers and fans off Power Rangers. Nobody knows how a 100 % from the ground up will do. The US morphed outfits were possibly testing the waters. Also their own ground fights. |
