Kamen Rider Build Episode 1- "The Ones That Match The Best!" Discussion
Ten years ago, a mysterious device known only as the "Pandora's Box" was found on Planet Mars. The box created a massive "Sky Wall" that divided Japan into 3 sections, and strange creatures known as SMASH begin attacking humans.
A genius physicist with no memories stands against these monsters... As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
Time for our Best Match Boys to debut
|
First episodes are an exciting thing, they need to get you somewhat involved in the story and characters yet feature a huge action-sequence in the back to debut the first toys.
Ex-Aid did a great job IMO, so I hope Build follows suit. |

It was an alright episode. Fun, lot of content. Didn't blow me away or get me too excited but still, interesting enough. I'm eager to learn more about the setting.
|
Had fun watching, loved to see where it goes from here.
Especially since with the whole divided Japan set-up, we only really seem to have a brief idea currently of how things are from the sector our protagonist is stuck in. Wonder if the other parts have their own riders, or if they're doing as well. Course it's just the first episode, I don't need to know all of that now. |
Loved the early heisei vibes, and the hint of an underlying darkness that might be fun to watch unfold. Solid episode, but nothing blew me away. Still excited for what's to come.
|
Subs will help, but I enjoyed it a lot even without them. Looking forward to more.
|
I'll have to wait for subs to be sure, but I think this might be a strong first episode.
Random thoughts: -Sento himself seems okay, though his hair gimmick could get annoying, but with it being a simple visual and not a forced catchphrase, I don't see it getting to bad. -I just now suddenly realized how many Riders have a bar/restaurant set in the main sets. This one reminds me of the one in Kuuga. -I like that the form changes weren't overused in the first episode. I hope this kind of pace stays as it's easy to get form overload and we know Build has a bunch. -So the monsters are people that have been abducted and turned into brainwashed monsters. God, when was the last time we had that? I wanna say Showa at the very least. Also Marvel vibes. Luke Cage or the Weapon Plus, whichever you prefer. -About 2/3rds of the way through the episode I realized how red Eiji Akaso's hair is without the Amazons filter. -Build's fighting style is MATH. I'm okay with this. -I like that the divisions in the world are actual walls. It's nice world building. ...I'm sorry. -Subs might change my mind, but I'm calling it now: Goatee guy is NightRouge. No basis other than I watched Mirror, Mirror recently. |
That rider kick was really something.
Oh btw Sento's watch is on sale soon, seem to be prenium bandai: https://scontent.fsgn2-1.fna.fbcdn.n...43&oe=5A2165EC |
This was a good first episode. It was pretty fun to see Sento and the gangs antics as close friends and early humanizing is always nice. I'm wondering why the covered the face for the guy who opened Pandora's Box. It might just be he is important to the plot later, but if it was Sento that opened it that would be a pretty interesting plotline. The fights were a little fast-paced for my tastes, but were pretty fun to watch and it seems like Ryuga Banjyou(Kazooie) will be the main source of out-of suit fights until we get Kamen Rider Claws.
|
I laughed throughout the whole episode, even though I never really had any idea of what was going on. All the sciency stuff confused me, but that's only because I suck at science and never understood it. I should probably research it so I'm not completely lost at all the sciency stuff going on, but that's probably going to make me miss out on all the action going on.
I understand that Ryuga is angry at being an accused murderer, but I don't think he needs to keep screaming about it, or about anything in general. I don't have anything against screaming, but when it's perfectly acceptable to say things in a normal tone, please do. Other than Ryuga's screaming, which will probably be more bearable when I don't have a headache, the interactions between the boys were hilarious. I have a feeling they'll be a great comedy duo. |
So I'm sad to inform everyone here, But Kissasian has joined Kisscartoon and has been officially shut down.
So.... Anyone know another place to download subbed toku? I mean overtime did announce that their going to sub build and that's fine but does anyone here know any other site you can download from? |

Overtime's subbed the first episode, meaning anyone who can download it can do it now

Weird first episode. I really liked everything except the parts where the main character was Kamen Rider. That's a first for me.
Don't get me wrong, the action is good (in the sense that it is rather unique) but I would've preferred an old-fashioned brawl with the basic form only. Build switching to a mishmash form with Hedgehog only to switch back immediately after... way too clunky IMO. I also don't like how he has the sword from the beginning, he doesn't look like the type of Rider who uses a sword in the base form but I guess everyone does that these days anyway. But that's just me honestly, I prefer a classic fist fight in the first episode which showcases all the base form can do before we get to bike shenanigans or form switching, however it was still entertaining to watch. And as I said, everything else is surprisingly awesome. The world and characters worked for me right away. Now it remains to be seen how this will build up in the future. |
It was good. Nothing too amazing or inspiring, but good. The experimentation stuff has me hooked, as does all of the physics equations in the background. Even if it does keep reminding me I have degree work I should be doing. Sentou is an alright protagonist- he seems to have a much bigger ego than past heroes but I guess he deserves it, having invented his own driver. Everyone else... meh. They didn't get much to do. I'll wait and see how they develop.

Okay this episode was a Best Match with my feelings. I was honestly not expecting it to be that excellent. I mean I love the hell out of Ex-Aid and still wish we were getting more Ex-Aid but this exceeded my expectations. This was what I was hoping for it gave me the same feeling Geed did after Orb. This was very Agito-Esque and I think that was wonderful. I love the whole experimentation angle and that I definitely feel that Sentou became a Smash before, but the question now leads is how did he get changed back? I loved the combat it was over the top and amazing. It felt really Sillerious (Silly/Serious my favorite combination for mostly any Toku Show, and my own new word.) Honestly brilliant first episode, brilliant characters, and brilliant combat. I love the chemistry between the characters and Sentou and Ryuuga are amazing right now. I can't wait to see more of Nitrogue too.

Oh man, Sento. You have no idea how true that is... This episode was excellent. I haven't been this drawn in to a Rider show this fast in years. One of the strongest premieres we've gotten since... Wizard, maybe? Anyway this basically had everything, including but not limited to: - Pacing that felt just the tiniest bit less "cramped" than the past couple shows. I have a hard time explaining it if you don't know what I mean but, while it certainly wasn't as slow as something like Agito, it didn't move a mile a minute the way Drive, Ghost, and Ex-Aid did. A sort of "Best Match" of styles, if you'll forgive the obvious wordplay. - Solid exposition on the unique bits of the setting without feeling too bogged down by said exposition. - Seeds for all sorts of mysteries to be solved, again without throwing too much at the viewer all at once. - Some really great action. Major props for an extended sequence of bike action at the end. I'm still prepared for the poor thing to stop existing by halfway through, but for now, I'm very happy. - A pretty likable main character. I was expecting Sento to be obnoxious but he's mostly just enthusiastic, and having a bit of an attitude is a nice change of pace for the lead this year. The whole scientist shtick adds justification to the piles upon piles of possible Forms Build has too. Of course he'd want to try mixing and matching all his toys constantly, how else is going to find what works and what doesn't? - Toei living up to that article where they said Build would take all the good bits of every Kamen Rider show. We've finally got a cafe again, for crying out loud! And Build's helmet has the "tears" under his eyes! I didn't even notice that until now! Also Build is actually a vigilante who has beef with the authorities. I like stuff like that. Hopefully it makes for some drama down the line. - Consistent continuity! Ryuuga totally did have his pants unzipped the whole time. Which felt like kind of a weird thing to go back and check for, but hey. - Sento's f***ing watch: https://i.imgur.com/f3iBqdG.jpg That's either so genius it's stupid or so stupid it's genius. Possibly both. So in a single half hour of television, I've been made super hyped for what's to come. All this considering I wasn't even that excited for the show when all the announcements were being made. You did good, episode 1. You did good. |
Ditto to everything Fish Sandwich just said!
I've only watched the raw (I'm a TVN guy, sue me), but I'm lovin' it so far! I was on a Rider hiatus since Gaim, it was just too good, that Drive left me feeling flat and then I never even bothered with Ghost/E-A. I always take toku breaks, I'll catch up on a few years worth while watching the current show, spend a few grand on toys I don't need, get burned out, then abandon ship for a while. I've never once jumped into a series on day one, but yesterday, by a series of random events I found about Build, then realized shortly after ep1 was airing within hours. Fate...? Anyway, at least I'll be able to get in on the toys without having to track them all down after the fact. The lockseed hunt was grueling! |

And I'm really liking this show so far. Very strong debut. It reminds me of an Early Heisei series mixed with the charm of a Post-Decade series. Particularly, the protagonist has elements of Shouichi-kun while the world itself reminds me a bit of Kabuto. |
I love it. I was a bit scared that the first episode wouldn't really live up to the hype but it actually did. And I love Sento, especially his dynamic with Ryuuga at the end. Also thank God the bike is going to be featured a lot.
|
despite my bad first impression about build(because to many form), this is quite solid first episode, i just hope this rider don't spam form at first early episode and forget about it later, but yeah that's about it later also what is it about that floating formula when he about to henshin?, i get the rider kick formula but when about to henshin? thats kinda weird also i licked KR claw character already
|
Gotta say, I'm liking this show. Though I did feel that a dew bits, like some of the exposition and the initial transformation, were a bit awkward. Then again, it's the first episode. That's kind of to be expected. Sento was pretty cool, with plenty of humor to along with him. Instead of Emu's physical gags, it's him telling jokes and intentionally being funny. Can't wait to see how the other characters fit into their roles as the show goes on too.

If you google "equation watch" a whole bunch show up. Different makers change up the formulas, too.

Really wasn't sure what to think going into this one. I hadn't really kept up with any of the pre-release information about the premise or the characters, so I was more or less going in blind. Have to say that I'm quite pleased with what I just watched.
The tone definitely feels very early-Heisei to me; like something around the Ryuki/Faiz era. I love most of the pre-Den-O era, so this works a lot for me. We've got a good start with the core cast and the setting, but both will obviously be developed more as we go along. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes. I'm also enjoying the action scenes. Build's weapons still look hella fake and plastic-y, but we got an actual motorcycle action scene. Yes, half of it was just CGI, but I can't remember the last time we got a bike scene that wasn't just racing or part of some elaborate CGI finisher. I really hope this stays as part of the show. The suit and its abilities look really promising, too. So yeah, all in all I enjoyed this a lot and look forward to seeing where it goes. |
I just KNEW that my irrational hype about this show wasn't for nothing! This show is totally my style! I love that Sento and Ryuga's backstories have an intensely Showa vibe to them, and the various early Heisei stylings to everything. The humor was also on-point for me, and I loved the random MATH for Build's finisher. Within one episode the world is already intensely intriguing and the characters are a lot of fun. I absolutely can't wait for more! Gosh I love Kamen Rider.
|
I liked what I got. An interesting world building, mysteries and questions that needs answers, a vigilante Rider, an awesome suit, and it wasn't childish like Ex-Aid's first outing.
|
Could it be possible that Kiryu Sento was the one who touched Pandora's Box causing the cities to be formed?
|
Damn that was a really solid first episode! Definitely stronger than Ex-Aid's and like Fish said probably one of the best we've had in a good while.
While I'm not a huge fan of the Drill Crusher, the rest of the gimmicks worked really well and it was fantastic to see so much bike action right off the bat (it won't last, but still!). Wish I knew/understood maths better to get the significance of Build's kick, but it was very cool nonetheless :lol The tone was definitely very early Heisei, the protagonist amnesia and magical macguffin immediately giving off very strong Agito vibes. Very strong setup and characters, looking forward to more! |

I think this is right, been awhile. Anyone looking for more/better info look up slope intercept and velocity.

I got no problem except the ending of episode 1 has no cliffhangers...it feels like: Okay, here is Kamen Rider Build. See you next week, maybe?
I just love Ex-Aid's use of cliffhangerfs on each episode. |
Not really a huge fan of the toy gimmick. I don't know, it just doesn't seem as fluid and quick as some of the other Rider shows.
But my thoughts echo a lot of other peoples when I say that my first impression of this show is a positive one. I just hope it doesn't lose steam and fizzle out towards the end... |
Damn. Colour me impressed! Sento's giving off fun vibes which is nice, and the world building with Pandora's Box has a lot of potential, wouldn't be surprised if Build ends up giving some social commentary later down the road. So far I want to know more about the characters, first episode and all, but I like how we have so much questions just waiting to be answered. Also, Sento can use the Fullbottles as themselves? They'll probably drop that soon but I wanna know more about that. Can anyone do it? And considering he has the same post Smash symptoms, does it mean he used to be one? If true, probably the Rabbit one, his hair boner looks like a bunny ear
|
I'll be honest, I went in with low expectations. Ghost gave off such good vibes but turned out to be a disappointment while Ex-Aid soared above despite having such unorthodox designs.
But Build has turned out to be good. Not great but just good. However, it shows potential to be great. First episodes are usually bogged down with character and setting exposition along with toy displays so they can be forgiven but Build manages to be interesting. Kiryuu Sento looks like an intriguing character. Obsessed with science, Rube Goldberg-esque devices and his past, he nonetheless does the heroic thing near the end of the episode. As for Banjou Ryuuga, it is nice to see Akaso Eiji again. I thought he was great in Amazons S2 as Nagase Hiroki. The rest of the cast looked a little bit cookie cutter to me. The store owner, the female lead, the evil guy who looks ominously from a high place and says ominous things are all run-of-the-mill by now but those can be forgiven as well. And finally, I really liked the secret door refrigerator for some reason. Seemed like a minor quirky thing but it stuck in my mind. Overall, not bad, Build, not bad at all. |

Mind, my understanding of a lot of geometry is solely from the angle of electrical work, so if it isn't trig or the most basic of slope equation work, I'm basically useless... It kind of looks like the graph for calculating voltage of capacitors in resistive-capacitive circuits, but you'd need someone with a broader understanding of geometry/physics to explain it better. Although, now I'm looking forward to how well they execute electricity/Nuclear abilities, just because of the fact that I'm in the Navy Nuc training pipeline and am learning all that. It'll be neat seeing how well it lines up. |

Coming off of a tremendous high with Ex-Aid, I went in watching this with very low expectations. Pretty damn good debut episode IMO. Pacing was what it needed to be, leaving much to be desired. I'm already feeling the W vibes from this being a really nice blend of a mystery show with just the right dash of comedy thrown into it. I'll be tuned into this one.
Also pretty happy Yukari Taki is in this, after watching her in the Accel movie and a few Ultraman Ginga episodes, I had a feeling she'd be back in a bigger Toku series. |
