Custom Dino Charge Zords (Starting with Oviraptor)
I am a big fan of Bandai America's original dino zords from the Dino Charge line, like Deinosuchus and Ammonite. I also like the original mini-zords, giving life to previously zyudenchi/charger only Dinos.
I noticed that the heads of the bipedal minizords are basically the same size as the raptor and para zords' heads, so I decided to use the minizords to create full sized zords, by molding new heads, jaws and forearms (where applicable). My first finished creation is the Oviraptor zord, complete with Dino Gas weapon ;) Oviraptor dinozord finally finished! I'm very happy with the overall result. It goes to show you how easily Bandai could use parts/molds/3D models from the minizords to make new full-scale zords (at least for some of them, size-wise). Head, wings, and lower beak/jaw all molded and modified from the Oviraptor Minizord, Para zord is the base. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psoqx6goek.jpg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ps1pbnyy7d.jpg Head close up view. All details were taken from the colored "hatching" Oviraptor charger, which uses the Minizord as a base image. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...pstw0tvmug.jpg Dino Gas Charger, engage! I colored the tail gun bronze. I wanted to stay true to the source material (it's a giant fart gun) but stay classy ;) http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ps36bqcw5v.jpg |
This is cool for a repaint with a minor sculpt addition. I like.
|
Nice job.
I question the choice of the Oviraptor, but still solid :lol |
I wanted to do Oviraptor cuz he's a cool dino (feathers!) as well as the comedic factor of his weapon.
Next up are Iguanodon and Fukuiraptor! |
That looks really nice!
|
Hot damn I love that!

A quick comparison between the base Para, mini Oviraptor and finished custom:

Those look amazing. The sculpting and paint job are really good on the zord. I can't wait to see more.
|
Thanks!
Can't take credit for the sculpting - since they're molded from the minizords from the charger packs. Any sculpting I do is minimal, like blending the feathers to the forearm or fixing little imperfections from bubbles during the molding process |
Updates on iguanodon and Fukuiraptor zords!

Nice!! So which Dino zord are you using for the base for these two?
|
Fukuiraptor will be red velociraptor, just new head and jaw pieces.
Iguanodon will be the purple Pachy, and I'm changing the tail weapon to a kusarigama (sickle on a chain). I was just too lazy to take apart the red raptor to put the Fukuiraptor pieces on it for the update pic |

The idea behind the kusarigama is that the iguanodon has a very large claw on its thumb, and that is used in the tickle mechanism. So if you want, you can say that it's a tickle claw on a chain.

Hit a slight slag with molding the parts for Fukuiraptor and iguanodon, but I made progress on another custom zord
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psxsktw0k7.jpg Looking good there, Tapejara |
Lemme guess, Ptera based? :lol
|
Yup!
|
Made some progress affixing the guts if the pterazord head inside the hollow Tapejara cast. This mean it now has the peg to work as a helmet and joint to work in the pterazord neck!
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psdytmgxwv.jpg Still deciding if it's worth messing with the lower jaw or just keep the original. Everything else is just repainting |
Put it this way, does the lower jaw not being changed have any significance to it overall appearance of the Tapejera?
|
Overall, not really such a big difference. The lower jaw is shaped a by differently, and it has a few more details - but most of the detail (at the jaw hinge) gets covered by the silver "ear" pieces anyway. Plus, the lower jaw of ptera is a softer plastic to allow fitting over the two pegs that it hinges on. My plastic is rigid and might snap when I try to stretch it to it.
For now, I'm skipping making a new jaw. It looks pretty good as is. |

I realize :) - I'm just trying to use all the new details from the minizords that I can

Trying something new - and bigger. It's a material called Hydrospan, which will expand to 1.6 times the original, when left in tap water for a few days.
Here is the original cast after molding the Futabasaurus Minizord head (I also cut off the wheel from my cast): http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psuqw6oahc.jpg Here is the model almost full size after soaking in tap water for around 24 hours. I believe it got a little bigger before I molded it: http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psdaqeane5.jpg Here is my first cast. I rotocasted to to make the piece hollow. My plan is to cut it apart and fill the upper and lower jaws with the connective guts from the Plesiozord head - both pieces are removable from the figure - akin to what I'm doing with Tapejara/Pterazord: http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ps9hvedfkn.jpg I'd also love to add the neck ribbing. But I'd have to be glue-on pieces rather this molding the whole darn neck apparatus. I've got enough work cut out for myself as it is... I've been a bit ADD when it comes to finishing these zords. My best guess is that Fukuiraptor will be done next, followed by Tapejara, Iguanodon, and then Futabasaurus. I don't yet have an extra plesiozord to work with... |
Dear Goddess man! That is badass shit! I need to talk to you.
|
Thanks! Happy to chat.
I also have casts of the Kentrosaurus head and spikes, plus the Styracosaurus head soaking right now. The Styracosaurus frill (which is a separate piece) is giving me trouble molding it properly. I've already made a custom drill bit for the tail that has a heart on it ;) Lastly, I also have step up version 1 of the Allosaurus. I need to mold it and enlarge it again - then I'll mod the T-Rex face halves to fit. Depending on how that goes, I'm going try the Victory Minizord as well |
I did send you a PM and a visitor message.
|
Sorry about that. Replied
|
They're making Oviraptor ! I'm glad I finished mine before the pics surfaced

Thanks! I like my head better - the Minizord head. They should have kept the same paint scheme from the colored Minizord on the hatching charger.
|
Soon Tapejara will take to the skies! Just a few touch ups, some sealant, and I can put him back together.

Sweet!! Awesome work!
|
To the skies Tapejara zord!
Finally finished, and I'm very pleased with the result. Everything is repainted and the only new piece is the top jaw/head. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...sduonardw.jpeg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s2hoopsef.jpeg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...scntnwqso.jpeg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...szq9me8a2.jpeg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...siqzrwfbo.jpeg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...svbm7gq6b.jpeg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...snh0x43hc.jpeg Even painted the megazord eyes metallic blue from the original green http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...swubhci1b.jpeg |
Wow that came out great are you going to do other zords as well?
|
That is fuckin amazing.
|
Thanks guys!
Sentai king - check out the rest do this thread. I have a few more in progress and will be making all the other Dinos, hopefully. |
