First Image- Kamen Rider Poppy!
1 Attachment(s)
A New Challenger Approaches!
|
I love that they incorporated thigh-highs into her design.
|
The article that provided the new images makes a note of how this is the first time a heroine has been a Kamen Rider of her own (since some girls were IXA but that was secondhand).
Apparently her debut is episode 26, which is much sooner than expected. Also looks like the Tokimeki Crisis Gashat uses her voice, like the Poppy version of DoReMiFa Beat. |
This is what the show should have been from the start, and I say that as a huge Ex-Aid fan.
Also, the suit is as predictably awful as every other non-Dangerous Zombie Ex-Aid suit. |
... Hnnnnnnnnnnngh.
|
First Heroine Kamen Rider? Did they forget about Mage?
|
So my guess is that she'll start off as an evil rider, hence with dark red eyes, then she'll fight with the good guys later (as the toy catalog showed her with blue eyes)
|
That design is fucking awful.
Why does almost every female rider, what scant few we get, have to be some bubble-gummy piece of trash? Marika was pink yet she wasn't as ridiculous as this. Though TBH, this looks less like a female rider, and more like a creepy guy dressed up as a girl with suspicious motives. |

And those are literally all the exclusively female memorable riders we've gotten bar Marika... |

Please tell me which of this Riders are, as you put it, "bubble-gummy". As far as I can see only Nadeshiko, and now Poppy, are close to what you're describing. While on that topic, this design really fits her character, so that's your reason why. I can perfectly understand if you don't like her design, I feel a bit iffy about it too, but don't go spouting nonsense just because of it. |

Upon closer inspection, I've realized what I find off about her face: all of the other riders have something(a mouthguard or something to that effect) between their eyes and the lower end of the faceplate, without it, the eyes on Poppy's face just look plain weird to me.
And now I can't help but see the Martian Queen from Duck Dodgers... swell. |

I mean, she does have a visor just like all the other Ex-Aid Riders, but it's clear and has no trim so it is a little hard to see. Some sort of demarcation is there, though,
|
It's so terrible, I love it.

Also, this entire conversation reminds me of how bullshit it is that Tackle still isn't considered a Kamen Rider. |
I like the suit itself, but the Driver clashes horribly with it. Not sure why the Gamer Driver doesn't bother me with Brave but this does. And I think it might look even worse with Chronos.
Seems kinda weird, as the Driver in the toy scans matched Chronos' color scheme pretty closely. |
Lol this is awful First impression :D, i think its because the pose.

Other than the neck area, which does look like it's supposed to mimic the collar of a high school sailor uniform, even then if you actively didn't look for it you wouldn't even notice that detail at all unless you looked at the back, which gives off the impression more. As for how she acted, that's not the point. The point's the design. Nadeshiko acts girly and bubbly when she fights and moves in the suit because that's what her character was; a highschool girl. The same's most likely gonna be for Poppi, too. She's a game idol/dancer. Her acting bubbly and having a bubbly-like design as a rider falls in line with her character. |
I think the complaint is that male Rider designs tend to prioritize looking cool, whereas the female Rider designs tend to prioritize looking stereotypically feminine over looking cool.
Kamen Rider Femme looks cool and in keeping with the show's other designs, but it's undercut by her name being "Kamen Rider Hey-Look-I'm-a-Girl!" (I'm hoping that there's some Japanese wordplay there that makes it cleverer than it seems.) The female movie Riders also have the drawback of being quickly forgotten and generally not "counting" because so many movies are alternate-world stories. With that said, there've certainly been female Kamen Rider designs I've liked. Sadly, most of them have been short-lived. That this is a unique suit is pretty cool. Given that it's Poppy, I can't really complain about the stereotypical-cute-girl theme. Quote:

Maybe I was just thinking of Nadeshiko as a character. Point is, virtually every female Kamen Rider has been identified by their gender first and foremost. Hell, Femme's name was, well, Femme.
Plus holy shit yeah, we've only had four exclusively female riders counting this one. Two of them pink. That's pretty sad. EDIT: Or, yeah, what Tokumonkey said. |
Given Kamen Rider and Sentai are primarily aimed at a male audience, it makes sense unfortunately.
Only so many unique female riders in one franchise. Only one canon female red ranger in the other. |

Not siding with or against it, but did you expect her rider form of all people's to be edgy or something? |

Femme, Larc, Shuki, Amaki, Fubuki, Kivala, Nadeshiko, Marika, Idunn, Necrom Y, Necrom P, and Poppy. Jam also had a female body canonically, but eh. |

It's actually better than I thought it would turn out.
|
Huh, weren't her eyes blue in the catalogue? Looks like she'll go back to the side of good after all.

Also kinda surprised at the backlash here, even though I'm well aware female riders are kind of a controversial topic. I guess some people don't look at the catalog spoilers, but she seemed pretty well liked then and I don't see much difference in the design, aside from the brainwashed eyes. |

The design is okay, I'm just glad this is happening. Please let it stick. If this is another one episode kinda deal or they kill her shortly after I'll be pissed.

tbh the most surprising thing about this for me is how she doesn't have heels like Poppy actually does
|
Quote:
I mean they could pull a Kiriko and switch the shoes to sneakers whenever she does something dangerous but I bet they don’t want to have too much of a hassle in post production with this one. Especially since hand to hand combat is harder to do that way as opposed to a simple jump or something. |

I thought you meant heels like the one's Poppy's actually wearing, and no way any stuntman is doing his choreography in those things :lol |
*shrugs*
Fine by me I guess. |

Shuki just barely counts; she wasn't around for long, but she was in the actual series, she got something to do, and she had an original suit and concept. Marika absolutely counts. I suspect Poppy will count. I... probably shouldn't discuss this topic. Tl;dr: I disapprove of how Kamen Rider has handled most female Riders; there've nevertheless been a couple of good ones; I'm pleased that Poppy won't have high heels. |
