The Power Rangers Cinematic Universe
director Jonathan Entwisle shes some light on the future of Power Rangers:

Sounds absolutely horrible. Outside writers, Netflix Involvement, detachment from sentai, and an effort to rip off the mcu. DC tried and failed with an established brand. Hasbro is starting from scratch with probably their own ideas fueled by mmpr. Im sure it will look nice, but will suck in every other regard, just like their netflixs Death Note adaptation.

The moment I see "Cinematic Universe" is the moment I become immediately skeptical about your production.
Can Power Rangers do it? Yes. They've been doing it since Lost Galaxy and Super Sentai's been doing it for even longer. A shared universe is part of the franchise. But if you're gonna try to chase the MCU success formula, even properties where crossovers are a big part of its identity are put in jeopardy if they only focus on that and not establishing the world first. |
"We're going to do a Cinematic Universe!" is kinda just white noise for me at this point. I admit I've got distaste for that kind of thing personally, but has it ever actually worked out for anyone other than Marvel? Hasbro themselves has attempted this multiple times before with Transformers, and if even that multi-billion dollar juggernaut of a movie franchise can't manage it...

I'm convinced the MCU has tainted film making...

Oh so just because the MCU was successful, that means everyone has to do it. This is why Hollywood is so creatively bankrupt. The MCU only came about because it built up to something that was never done before, which in itself was a huge risk at the time.
Nothing to see here, just Hollywood chasing a dated fad, as they always do. |

Wow, hate to sound negative here, but I'm with the majority here. It's like they went out of their way to raise every one of my red flags. Not at all excited for this project.

When I see "shows, AND films" mentioned, it implies to me that they want to duplicate CURRENT MCU with streaming mini-series and films operating in conjunction with each other to form a cohesive whole.
Biggest question I can think of is if they're going to start an entirely new continuity with shows and movies to back it up, or are the new film(s) going to be set in the established multiversal continuity that is the show we know with every subsequent entry riffing on the new standard set forth by a new film? Transformers did Season 1 & 2, did the Movie, then released Season 3 with the idea that it follows the new status quo set forth by the Movie (not precisely though)! That's the pattern I'm wondering about. This will only work in any capacity if they recognize the mistakes done by DC. They try to jump into something without building anything up. The first film is the make-or-break and it has to actually find its roots before anything can occur between Movies and Shows. The 2017 entry didn't lead to anything big at the time, but it did take the time to try and establish itself as an origin story and give us reason to follow the characters. Hasbro might have the conceit that they can do what hasn't been done before: challenge the MCU by ripping it off! They haven't fully rectified the mistakes of Transformers Movie-Verse (commonly referred to as the "Bay-Verse"), but they continue to add something new to it. They also have G.I. Joe to consider with the recent release of Snake Eyes. They think they have enough built up that they can start expanding even further. The 2005 IDW Transformers Continuity tried the same thing toward the end by throwing everything in. But it all goes back to the success of the initial film. This cannot work otherwise. They won't be the MCU cause nobody on Earth can be the MCU but the MCU! It is something that can never be done again by anyone and not be called a rip-off. They can try to create something similar and beloved if they put the effort in, but they need to get off their high horse before it bucks them off! |
I already dislike the current MCU forumla of movies + TV shows so I'm not too keen on it here.

I wonder if anyone remembers that Godzilla and the Universal Classic Monsters did this way before Marvel...
So I saw this title, and just had to chime in. I think the MCU got into everybody's heads with the whole "shared universe" thing, and as TokuKnight mentioned earlier, it's the first movie that has to stand on it's own before anything else can take off. Here, they're just putting the wagon in front of the horse, making bold statements about catching lightning in a bottle. For example, the Universe Classic Monsters in what is known as The Dark Universe, tried to establish that with the 2017 Mummy (never seen it, nor plan to) and look how that turned out. Then there's DC, and they still can't make it work (though given the money they're making, even if it's bad they'll think they're doing it right), heck even Marvel's losing it's appeal, or maybe it's just me. The point is, the whole "shared universe" concept is something that's just being driven into the ground because everybody thinks that just because the MCU is popular, they can do it too, whilst ignoring the fact that they're just making a money trap that not a whole lot of people will care about. It's like making a cinematic universe out of Looney Tunes characters and you just want to watch "The Bugs Bunny Movie," but you have to watch the "Porky Pig Movie," "The Daffy's Daffy Ducking Movie," and the "Wile-E Coyote Trilogy" to understand the whole thing and have no interest in any of those movies, or having said movie as the debut for said cinematic universe, and the whole movie's just trying to say "This is a Cinematic Universe! Just like Marvel!" It's times like this that I'm glad I'm not trying to make any shared universe with any of my projects (too much headache). But that's just my two cents on the subject, and although I have no huge attachment to Power Rangers, but I can say that I did at least watch it when I was young, so I do have some sentiments on that, but if anyone else is on board, I hope you can find enjoyment out of this venture. |
I wholeheartedly agree with everyones sentiments here. Lets not forget that Netflix also has a track record of messing up well known properties with their involvement. Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, and the first glimmers of the Gundam movie sucked profusely. I get they are a streaming giant, but partnering with them on content creation is a big no-no with what theyve churned out at present.
Literally setting yourself up for failure. |
Goddammit, can we not have a fucking 'cinematic universe' for everything anymore? Marvel fucked us over with the MCU, now EVERYTHING has to be connected.
|
Another Toku site mentioned this and how Netflix seems to be key to it all.

I dunno why they felt the need to use the word 'Cinematic Universe' when Power Rangers had been doing that type of thing long before Marvel popularized it :lol.

I also wanna say while the MCU did suddenly popularize the the shared universe concept again when it started (Like others have said including myself, the idea isn't new. Universal monsters, Godzilla, Showa toku, Doctor Who, etc have done it as well.), I don't think it's right to put all the blame on that alone.
Marvel tried it and it worked out perfectly for them. The problem is how every attempt since by competing companies constantly miss the point of WHY it works when it does. You gotta build a world before you start crossing aspects of it over. Avengers didn't happen until 5 years or so after Iron Man started things. But a lot of studios and big wigs only see the money it generates. The problem isn't the MCU, imo. The problem is that the MCU worked out so well that Hollywood over-saturated the concept once they dollar bills began to appear en masse. |
