Shougeki Gouraigan
The new Keita Amemiya/Toshiki Inoue joint has started airing. The raw of episode 1 is up and floating around the interwebs. So far no sub group has openly stated that they're working on it, but I assume someone will grab it (TVN is probably a safe bet, Over-Time is apparently now considering it).
So far, the show is... well, let me put it this way: you know how the third series of Garo felt really noticeably different? Gouraigan feels like old school Garo. The action scenes are full of the same kind of crazy visual designs and ideas that were part and parcel with Amemiya's Garo. The suits (and yes, there are real suits) are incredibly detailed and insane... for the most part. There are some kind of monsters already living on Earth - I'm not sure what they are (ich spreche nicht japanisch), but only our main heroine can see them - who have some relatively simple and grungy looking designs. Gou and the other main guys, though... damn. I kinda pieced together what was going on based on the pre-release summary, but I definitely want to see this subbed. Basically, though, Gou is sailing through space on a big ship piloted by a small, almost completely naked AI woman (who may or may not also be his sword - it's hard to tell). The ship is attacked by a crazy Amemiya monster. Gou beats it, but in the process his ship is damage and crashes, unleashing a group of prisoners he was carrying (one of whom kills and steals the form of Jetman's Toshihide Wakamatsu - I assume he'll be the main villain). Gou is about to commit ritual suicide, but a black smoke creature in a white suit stops him by saying a lot of stuff I didn't understand a lick of. Meanwhile, there is a Japanese school girl. She can see the monsters. That's about all I can figure out about her. But yeah, on at least a purely visual level this show is definitely hitting all of my buttons: awesome suits, cool fights, crazy over-the-top visuals, inventive scene transitions, and boobs. Obviously, I can't speak much to the story, but so far nobody's fallen in water and that's always a good sign for an Inoue show. :lol I liked it, though, and I hope to see this with proper subs. |
So I never normally bother with raws, but since this may never get subbed, and I really wanna see it I decided to watch the first episode and see how much I could get from it.
The answer? Not a lot. This clearly wasn't the best show to try and watch without subtitles with the sheer amount of random crazy shit that was happening. I mean I know toku is toku, but this is pretty nuts even by toku standards. I will say though, this has some gorgeous visuals and epic fight scenes, if nothing else, those can be appreciated universally. Also lol at the pointless fanservice, it's like GARO all over again. |
Where did you guys find the raw? I need to check it out.
|
http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=479694 there you go, bro.
|
Looks like O-T is officially not touching the show. Hope TV-N or someone else picks it up.
|
Damn it all. I can not for the life of me figure out how they make these decisions. Now that Garo is over for now they have some free time so why not pick this show up? It's like when they decided overnight to do Ginga after being adamantly against it from the start. I just don't get what goes into their process.
|
Why wouldn't Nihon do it? If it is no different than Garo, there is no excuse for people not to sub it.
|
If I understood correctly over-time don't want to sub it because Inoue is involved. And the fact it been described as a love comedy toku might have something to do with it. And tvnihon has been planning on it they were counting down to the airing of the first episode for the last couple of weeks.
|
It's funny because from the raw, there was like no romance at all. Just random scenes of a girl in a school uniform and slotted between that was some huge epic space battle.
I wonder if the subs will make sense of how all this fits together. |

Update: TV-Nihon has announced that they will, indeed, be subbing this. :thumb:

Yay!

I'm bummed that Over-Time chose not to do it, but I can understand the reluctance due to it being an Inoue show, because it could have some badass opening episode only to play far too many of his familiar tunes later on (look forward to the episode where the male lead goes conveniently temporarily blind!) and it would suck for them to start a project only to drop it once it fails to interest them and disappoint those expecting the full series.
I won't be thrilled if TV-Nihon is my only avenue to watch this, but I'd get over it. Well, I should say watch eventually, Ginga is the only toku series I've kept up with this year, not even the non-Ginga Retsuden episodes! Quote:

Yes!

I might check it out for the hell of it.

I like how, even subbed, this was ridiculously hard to follow, even with most of the dialogue being exposition dumps. Still, the visuals and action were just as impressive as they were the first time, so I won't give up yet.
|
And I accidentally canceled the download... argh.
That was different. :lol I liked it I guess, it's very unique that's for sure. |
Was anyone else waiting for Navi to just start screaming, "Hey, Listen! Hey, Listen! Hey, Look up!!"
Anyway, I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either. In fact, if Nihon dropped it, I wouldn't care. The best thing I can say is I liked the designs, but is Amemiya just the designer or is he also the writer of the show? |
Amemiya is a character designer. Toshiki Inoue is the man behind the writing for this show and among his many other credits are shows like; Jetman, Agito, Hibiki form 30 up, Decade, Timeranger, Tekkoki Mikazuki, etc
|
I can't wait to watch this, I do a Toku night with my friends with Kyoryuger and Power Rangers so this and Gaim will be joining it.

The man was a genius up until the early 2000's. Right around the end of Agito is when he started getting bizarre. No one much cares for his Hibiki, Decade of course is infamous. But he wrote a single very solid episode of Gokaiger. The Jetman tribute episode. The only weirdness there was that no explanation was ever given as to why Gai (Silver) couldn't see the ghost of Gai (Condor) like the others could. |

Lazy solution but whatever. Also, Gai talking about Gai, that's weird. :lol |

The shows that Inoue was HEAD writer (meaning he has real control over the show) on were Jetman, Agito, Faiz, Hibiki (second half), Kiva, and The First/The Next movies. The rest are guest writer credits. Inoue was a good writer until he got hung up on love stories and comedies, two things he can't write. |

Btw, I couldn't find out if he was a guest or head writer on Cutey Honey the Live. I really wish more fansubs translated the intro credits. |

That was a good start. A show with an "Asura's Wrath" touch where a daredevil spirit plans to form a sentai of kickass divinities to battle his rival ? I'm on it.
Strangely, the apparition of the smokey dude was like a shoutout to the crazy budha from Yoshihiko. Maybe next time he'll appear, he'll be just getting out of the shower :) As usual, I guess the following episodes will be lighter on CGI, but hey, that's the plan to hook us from the very start. |
Was this a new series or was I watching another side story of Garo? Same graphics, same music, same ending credits sequence. Apart from the little naked chick *Giggity* It didn't seem that much interesting, I'll wait to the 5th episode to really past judgment. Keita should've just did Garo season 4 if he's going to use the same material.
