Kamen Rider Ryuki/Shinji VS Kamen Rider Knight(Akiyama Ren)
Which is your favorite of the 2 main riders from Kamen Rider Ryuki?
Kamen Rider Ryuki(Kido Shinji) - Wants to stop the Rider War, doesn't have the most expertise at fighting but can hold his own, more of a defensive fighter. Friendly personality. If there was any rider that DIDN'T want to fight itis him(until Tezuka shows up). Kamen Rider Knight(Akiyama Ren) - Wants to win the Rider War to save Ogawa Eri. Much more aggressive than Shinji, skilled with close combat and swordplay. Stand off-ish, can be outright hostile, distant, usually just talks when talked to. However he has some nobility which isn't very apparent initially. Overall, though the series is focused on Shinji's introduction to the Riders, Mirror World, the Rider War, and his attempts to stop it and later close Mirror World, I enjoyed Akiyama more. More of an interesting character, as he is less predictable. I do like both characters but yea, Akiyama FTW in my book. Which one do you prefer? |
Shinji is a hard character to really like. He's loud, he's obnoxious, and he can be naive to the point of borderline stupidity. At the same time, though, he's very much the heart of the show and you can see throughout it all the ways that his presence influences the others. By the end of the show, even Asakura will respect a temporary truce when Shinji wants to meet with the other Riders.
Still, Ren is much more instantly likable. He's a classic stoic badass, but he has a definite heart of gold underneath that shell and the Rider War is much more personal for him than for Shinji. He makes some mistakes, but in a lot of ways he's a much more sympathetic character. I like both of them a lot and I consider their relationship one of the all-time great bromances of Kamen Rider (hmm, there's an idea for a thread), but I liked Ren instantly and it took two trips through Ryuki to really warm up to Shinji. |
well that and Shinji is the only main character Rider to not ride a motorcycle...he rides a freaking SCOOTER...

I'm experiencing the opposite of what Switchblade said x3
Ren's goals are noble, and he has a heart of gold, but you must remember. He values the life of one person more than those of 12 others. While there are some monsters in the Rider War, there are also Tezuka, Shinji, hell, even Kitaoka. I know that Knight isn't like that (And he even feels extreme guilt when he kills Odin), but I always found it hard to sympathize with Ren. Shinji was a lovable idiot who spent the entire series trying to find another solution to the Rider war, only ever giving in once, I believe. |
I just don't know that I could ever choose between the 2. For the same reasons that both Switchblade and Matrixbeast stated I would have to pick Ren and Shinji. They are arguably the best team of main/secondary riders ever. What one lacks the other has. They are a perfect balance to each other. I love Ren for being a complete badass, never giving up on his goals, and always making the tough choices. And I also love Shinji for that goofball heart of gold that he has, his inexperience which makes him relatable, and his overall personality.
Ryuki had the perfect balance of characters to love or hate all around. Ren and Shinji are just the shining example of how to do the Rider 1/2 thing right. So right that I think most people would have a tough time choosing between them. |

I guess that's true, but even still, that doesn't change my opinion of Shinji. I wanted to see Shinji succeed not because I like seeing heroes win in the end, but because I wanted to see how he would win the Rider War without giving in like Zolda or Taiga. I genuinely wanted to see Shinji succeed. He's naive, innocent, relatable, and overall just a great guy and a nice character to follow a series through (I know a lot of people say they wish Ryuki followed Ren instead of Shinji, but I really don't think the series would be anywhere near as interesting following Ren).

I'll be blunt and say that I don't like either of them at all.
Shinji is a gullible piece of jelly for almost all of the show, and while I can't say I'd be any different given the situation, he just seemed to be too forgiving and lacking in conviction. Added to how naive and overly trusting he was, I just found him to be irritating. Ren, on the other hand, is just too cold. He, in complete contrast to Shinji, is nothing but conviction, and doesn't have the ability to put others before himself, like a traditional hero character should be able to. (His fiancee doesn't really count as far as I'm concerned; valuing one person's life over that of multiple others' because of a relationship is fairly selfish.) Beyond that, he just seems to be trying too hard to be cool. |
