Armor Time! - A Kamen Rider Zi-O Toy Thread
It suddenly occurred to me that, since the scans from the first toy catalog have been released, it might be a good... er... time to start a thread in this forum.
What are folks planning on picking up? Rider Kicks? Ride Watches? The candy toys, of which there'll be a bundle? I'm mulling over Rider Kicks, both to have a version of Zi-O (and maybe Gates) before the inevitable Figuarts, and because I'm very slightly curious about the Armor Time gimmick. It looks like the Ride Armor for build has elbow joints, and knee joint seem likely. This may provide a tiny bit of articulation, similar to the ability for LVUR Ex-Aid to slightly move his arms with the Dragon Knight Hunter armor. Another theory about how it works: it suddenly occurred to me that the FullBottle shoulder pauldrons may be removable, making it easy to swap which side is which when moving from Zi-O Build to Gates Build. What's interesting the rest of you about the new toy line? |
I might just pick up the Zi-O figure from Rider Kicks. At least, that's all I have planned for the moment. I can't say I care a whole lot for the gimmick since they're Legend Rider forms, but it'd be nice to start a collection of main Rider figures on somewhat of a budget.
The Driver looks nice, but as I said, not too big on Legend Rider thing. My opinion might change though, once I hear the voice and sounds it outputs. Those can be big factors for me. I wasn't too fond of the Evol Driver when it was released since it just looked like a Build Driver with a new paint job, but the voice sold me on it. |
I'm getting as many Ride Watches I can get my mitts on. The Cross-Z Ride Watchbeing a campaign item for the first wave of drivers doesn't help lol
|
Probably gonna refrain from this line for the most part, actually collecting all the DX RideWatches would be hilariously costly (by my estimate it was around 46,000 yen just for the first quarter) and honestly I just think the RideWatches are some of the least aesthetically pleasant looking collectibles in years. As it is, probably just gonna aim for a few favorites. Ex-Aid, Ryuki, Faiz, Wizard...May get Build just to check them out early. Though also what the voice is like will play a big part.
Some of the Gashapon/SG stuff I'm sure is gonna be really tempting since a lot of my favorite characters are secondaries or tertiaries I'd definitely get a Zolda no matter what form it took. I'd also be interested in some Showa watches, actually, but who knows if they'll actually do those. |
Good point about waiting to hear the voice. For the past several years, the voices have tended to be irritating-to-extremely-irritating. I know it's unlikely to ever go back, but I really miss the days when the chatty Driver (or baubles) actually sounded kinda cool (Faiz, Kabuto, Decade.) I've always wanted to find the person at Bandai who first said, "Hey, why don't we make the voice really over-the-top" and then vigorously shake them.
|
I'm really loving the Gundam at the moment and I've wanted it since I saw it. Aside from that... I really wanna see more information about the Rider Kicks/Armour line before making any decisions on it. How exactly it works, what the articulation's like, etc. Depending on the line I like picking up gimmick figures with a lot of mix and matching representing forms that you just wouldn't get in SH Figuarts, and also is just plain fun sometimes. So I'm really hoping this gimmick is enjoyable and doesn't hamper articulation too much.
|
Well, I actually kind of like the over-the-top voices and effects for the Drivers. It's just a matter of Preference. I would rather get the Build or OOO Driver over say, Gaim or Ghosts.

(Belated: just realized I should'a named this thread "It's About Time" Whoops.)
|
The Bandai candy blog's most recent Ex-Aid post shows the hand of an upcoming Zi-O figure, and it's a posed hand as opposed to the standard holding-things hands that have been the norm. Looks like that line will inherit the swappable hands they've piloted with the Kyuranger, LvsP, and Build-special sets. They also re-branded their Kamen Rider candy toy page with Zi-O, so we'll likely see an article about the SODO equivalent soon.
|
pretty interested in the Rider Kicks figures. I already sort of want a couple of them, I'm sure once I see more I'll want more.
|
I'll probably pick up a zi-o figure and the ridearmor drive set, drive legend rider figure if we get one, drive ridewatch, and the same things for genm, Lazer, and rogue if they get their own versions of everything.

HLJ just put up preorders on the Ride Armor Zi-O, Gates, and Build Armor. Also the Jikan Gilade.

Some of Build's other sounds. Loving the stop watch approach too. Really interesting. It's that classic stopwatch top button approach before the multi-button digital styles. Kind of like pocket watches. But the side sculpting is definitely reminiscent of stop watches of the digital era. Which actually fits to Gates' helmet design too. |
I don't think I've ever been this excited for the release of a Belt. The sounds, Effects, and looks are all top notch. Especially love the multiple voices, and the awesome digital effects on the belt. Can't wait!

Gonna skip this one for now. I've been all-in on Build Sodo, and I need a break.

Why is this coming out in September?! I'm going to japan in just a few days, coouldn't it have come out sooner?

Honestly not a big fan of the Driver voice this time. Then again I can just barely hear it.
I do like how the Build RideWatch seems to change the colors of the center display to red and blue though. |

Grease Ridewatch, apparently a Premium Bandai exclusive:

I ordered the Rabbit/Tank and Grease Rider Kick figures. I wish they had one for Zi-O. I'm sure there's one coming, maybe they're waiting until the show starts.
I'm liking the Belt but I have the Build and 'W' belt and trying really hard not to start going all in on collecting all the belts too. Kamen Rider toys are an addicting hobby. |

http://news.tokunation.com/2018/07/3...ase-info-54332 The Rider Kick figures look pretty good, nothing I would consider over Figuarts but if they do make a Gaim one I will buy and display it on my desk at work. |
The RKF Zi-O figure went up for preorder about 2 weeks ago. Orders are closed on HLJ by now but I'm sure it'll pop back up.
|
Wonder how many Riders they'll make Watches for. The Build Riders aren't that surprising and we might get ones for other Ex-Aid guys too but I'd like some previous secondary and extra Riders. Guess we'll find out if someone completely hacks the belt.

First Candy Blog So-Do update is live!
http://bandaicandy.hateblo.jp/entry/zio01 Looks nice. Back to the body+armor format of Ex-aide. Wrists and bonus hands are a big upgrade. |

With Hibiki, Ryuki, and maybe Kabuto as the exception. Though I do expect they'll have some focus on Sasword in Zi-O. Possibly Punch Hopper too. Do expect the same with Chalice as well. Or they may approach that from Blade's angle instead. May have the Missing Ace riders too. Possibly the Kabuto Kabutick. Any series that keeps to under 5 or less riders, is likely to have all done. Some things with too many may not. Like Ryuki with the over 13 riders, may pull it in some. A large chunk will still cameo though even if they don't get turned into Armors for Zi-O or Geiz. |
Just preordered the gashapon Ridewatch Set 02 (Drive, Zi-O, and Geiz). :D
Should arrive sometime near the end of September. |
AmiAmi has the preorders for Zi-O SO-DO waves 1-4 up (Had to search "soudou" for waves 1-3). Sets are already sold out, but cases are still there. There is a little new info from the listings.
Ride 1, Oct, has 7 types. Ride 2, Oct, has 6 types. Ride 3, Nov, has 8 types. Ride 4, Dec, has 8 types. That's 29 total types for just the first 4 waves. And here I thought Zi-O would be easier with less forms than Build. I don't think it's all forms, but something has to be filling this line. I doubt it's past Riders because ShodoVS is a thing. |

The blog suggests they'll mostly be in 2-box sets, one featuring the "action body" and the other featuring the armor. Ex-Aid was a many-Riders show, but Zi-O has just the two starting Riders. I could see a few different scenarios: 1. The line focuses mostly on Zi-O and Geiz, and we get a TON of action bodies for those two characters. 2. We don't get a ton of their action bodies (although I'd expect extensive Armor Time sets,) and instead, the line delves into prior Riders, bringing them up to Bandai Candy's current standards. As you pointed out, I'm dubious about this due to ShodoVS. 3. We don't get a ton of action bodies or prior Riders, and those boxes focus on more Armor Time sets. Come to think of it, I suppose we could see a lot of the kaijin Riders. I'm not sure they'd go that far, though, given the massive amount of new molding that'd be required, and that those designs aren't super-friendly to the candy toy format. The prior couple of SODO lines relied heavily on mold-reuse, which is relatively easy given that Toei tends to share lots of parts like base suits. |
The first 3 waves of So-Do are up on HLJ now as well
|
The Bandai Candy Blog updated again, and now, we know how the SO-DO Zi-O line will be handled: It looks like we won't be parts-swapping with the main Zi-O figure. The Build Armor Time has a unique body, and I assume the future ones will, as well. It also probably means that if we get Geiz Build, it'll be two boxes, and won't parts-share with the Zi-O version. I suppose we now know what will make up most of the line.
