Ultraman Orb Discussion thread
So the new series has begun and it's being subbed weekly on Crunchyroll, let's talk about it!
The first episode of the show was fantastic. The quality was noticeable throughout and it seemed like the episode had a ton of budget going for itself. (and some great effects work) Our main hero seems unlike any we've ever had in Ultraman before. I think Mebius comes somewhat close, being a little out of tune with the planet's customs but Gai kicks it up a level. As I watched the episode and specifically that scene at the end between Gai and the SSP I felt like I was watching Doctor Who – the somewhat eccentric alien along with his companions. If this is the sort of idea the show is going for, I'm all on board. We're getting a few mysteries and tragic backstories set up right off the bat and that's such a good thing. The first scene of the episode was dark and gives you a sense of Gai's failings. He's clearly a more seasoned and careful fighter now so I have to wonder if any of what happened in the past will come back to be a deterrence throughout the series. Jugler's also an interesting villain, the guy knows something about Gai that alludes to a darker nature. (unless he's outright talking about the first scene) As menacing as Jugler seems, I don't believe he's going to be our final enemy – I wanna say there's someone else pulling the strings. Compared to X's first episode it's difficult to say which I enjoyed more. There was a ton of build up going into both shows – X being the first multi-cours show with an uninterrupted run in over 10 years and Orb being the 50th anniversary, they both did a lot of things right. As far as the characters go, I'm enjoying Orb's cast more just based on episode one. I'm hopeful I'll enjoy them more than the X characters (who were mostly fine) just based on the fact that it's a much smaller cast with livelier personalities who can potentially get some more screen time. X also set up an interesting mystery at the start of the show that, overall, wasn't worth the payout but just from this episode alone, Orb's story could potentially be more long lasting. Long story short, the episode was a ton of fun to watch. The characters are fun and vibrant, the action is great, there are teases at a larger story and connection between our hero and our foe. I'll be eagerly awaiting every episode each Friday. (also, points for those Twister and Superman references) |
This was an awesome first episode. Gai just has this aura to him that's great he reminds me of Akira from ToQGer mixed with I want to say Superman. He just has this great superhero feeling to him. Also he's a bit weird in a good way with some of the things he did. I love the SSP it reminds me of Kamen Rider Drive merged with Kamen Rider Ghost lol. The three of them are kooky and fun. The smart one reminds me of Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory. I am intrigued with the dark mysterious guy with the evil version of Orb's morpher. The fighting was awesome and I loved that Orb used some of the original UltraMan's moves. Very solid start for this show and can't wait to see more of the crazy stuff Gai does.

I don't have a Crunchyroll paid account, so I'll end up waiting a week to see this. Really looking forward to it, though.

I have a bit of a question. I haven't ever watched an Ultraman...anything, really, before, but I am curious about the franchise, especially as the last series was quite well received from what I could see. Do you guys think Orb would be a good place to jump in? Would I be missing something or confused about anything?
|
I liked the first episode, but I'm afraid that the SSP will become really annoying. They are a bit too silly for my taste.

Orb uses cards of past Ultraman to transform, and I'm sure some of them will appear later in the show. X was pretty much the same in that regard. Same goes for classic monsters, these appear frequently as well. It's fine though, you can easily read up on past shows and since the characters in the show don't usually know the old characters either you'll get a short introduction of them. I say go for it. |
Well, tokusatsu in general is never really super continuity heavy unless something is a direct sequel. I think all you really need to know is "There were monsters on Earth in the past and Ultramen fought them". It looks like this isn't set in the main continuity but one where various Ultramen all fought on earth in the past.
It is the 50th anniversary, so there will be callbacks to stuff I'm sure, but it's also Tsuburaya's first show in this new time slot and I think they'll make it easy enough for viewers to get into. Quote:
Also, for those that like Easter eggs, each episode is going to have a pretty subtle reference to a moment from the franchise's past and I'll be serving up translations of that from Tsuburaya's website on a weekly basis. |
For anybody, like myself, thinking we had to wait a week to see episode one.... apparently you don't. I just watched it on the PS$ and I don't have a crunchyroll account. Checked the website and it's open to everybody right now.
as for my thoughts, I wasn't big on the fusion concept personally but I liked it. Gai seems pretty interesting so far. But he fels like a younger member to the Ultras, calling them -san and basically saying "please let me borrow your light." And yes the little nod there was pretty cool. As for the SSP, not quite sure what to make of them yet personally. But I think the scientist one may get annoying if their not careful. And the Uncle slash actual attack team member was just sort of there but it's only the first episode I'm sure he'll get fleshed out a little more as the show goes on. as for the apparent villian I wonder if he has some sort of connection to the woman we saw in the cold open. |
First episode of Orb was fun! I like Gai and the SSP, they're goofy. I hope they interact with each other more, I do like the "Doctor and his companions" idea.
Maga Basser's cool. Always nice to see new monsters. |
Just finished the first episode and I really liked it. The cast is engaging and I like the idea of focusing more on the supporting characters while the actual hero remains more mysterious so far - reminds me a bit of Nexus in that regard. Gai himself seems fun from what little we've seen - there are a lot of shades of Zubat in him and that is a show I will always welcome homages to. I also really liked the CGI work with all of the storms and the actual fight between Orb and Maga-Basser. The show is off to a great start and I'm excited to have another new Ultraman to follow.

You know I have to say that was pretty entertaining. I haven't cared much for Ultra in the last few years. Not since Ginga bored me to tears. But Orb seems very promising so far. Hideo Ishiguro is already more memorable in one episode as Gai then he was in all of his appearances as Kai in Den-O. The first episode has the right amount of energy, Mystery, & action to satisfy me. Though as usual the goofy civilian characters will probably wear thin very soon.

I rather enjoy the theme song for this show. I really only have Rider shows for reference so I don't really know, but it gives me a lot of Showa vibes. It's good.
Am enjoying the show as well. |

Episode 2: I really love the SSP they are a lot of fun. They aren't getting annoying at all for me. I really like how they focus on this more civilian group looking into strange phenomena than a military unit, more of a change for UltraMan that hasn't really done this since Ginga. Gai is my favorite part of the show. He has this heroic nature and mystery behind him and it's fantastic. Juggler makes a great villain to and I am glad he is more of a hands on villain here. Really solid episode and I can't wait for the next form next week and more of what's to come.
|
I watched this episode and it was pretty good. The special effects didn't wow me like X did, they seemed a little average. The characters however aren't that annoying to me right now, I mean if I could survive through the first half of Drive I could make it through this as well. Anyway I'll probably pick the show back up once its finished so I can "binge" it.

Good episode.
I enjoy Gai as a protagonist, and Juggler seems like a cool antagonist. It’s especially good to have an antagonist so early on, if you remember with Ultraman X it was MOTW-plots for a long time until the siblings showed up, and they weren't even the real villains. Turns out there's this evil monster that comes into play during the last few episodes. I really disliked that about X. The MOTW plots were good enough to be entertaining but I prefer a plot where I know who represents the opposing force and where I see him doing things. Action was decent, however I feel like they burn these Demon Kings too quickly. I mean Orb is 2 Ultraman in one, but the Demon Kings have been feed with the energy of monsters which are usually strong enough on their own to give an Ultraman some trouble. I think Orb shouldn’t be so strong that he can defeat them yet. I wish we would've had more classic monsters which Juggler awakens, from which he then collects the cards and uses these to awaken the Demon Kings. Have them be some boss monsters which take more than one episode to deal with. Now, Juggler does seem to collect the cards of the Demon Kings for some purpose, but I suspect he'll be powering up himself. Which is a cool idea, but I still think monsters with legendary titles like these, infused with multiple powers of classic Kaiju's shouldn't be the first MOTW Orb faces. Character-wise, I don’t think the SSP will annoy me like I feared. They already toned them down a little bit, and they don’t make one stupid joke after the next and they also don't make weird faces with close-up camera shots. However, I really hope Cap becomes more active as the show progresses. With active I mean, do stuff some cool stuff on her own. Because as it stands she acts as the boss of the SSP, gets into trouble, screams for 5 minutes and then gets saved by Gai. I hope that's not becoming a trend. Cap should really get some focus; she didn’t do anything in episode 2 besides following Juggler. |
I'm disappointed Gai didn't run in to a photo booth to transform. I was hoping that'd be his thing.
But I liked this episode. This is a good show. |
Non-subscriber version finally went up today. I liked this episode a lot. I'm really intrigued by Gai and Juggler's relationship and history - there's a pretty good mystery being set up here and I can't wait to get some answers. I liked the big action scene at the end, too; the model work was great. One of my favorite parts of Ultraman is the detailed miniature sets and Orb is already making great use of them. I especially liked the clean holes burned through the buildings.
|
Episode 3: I will definitely say that Gai and Juggler's rivalry/relationship is definitely one of the best parts of the show. Also just Gai's character is freaking brilliant. I love the SSP a lot they are lots of fun. The action is totally amazing, this is some of the best Toku action going on right now. Burnmite is a totally kick ass form and those fire effects were badass. I can't wait for more.
|
Episode 3 is my favourite episode so far. Burnmite is as awesome as I hoped it'd be.

So far we know that:
After every fight Orb gains 1 Ultraman Card. Juggler gains the monster's Kaiju Card. What seems to happen is that the more powerful card or cards Juggler uses, the more powerful the monster he can summon. Based off these two facts and my speculation. I think Juggler is trying to acquire enough of the strong Kaiju Cards to summon something extremely power, but has to do so without giving Orb too many Ultraman Cards in case Orb could have enough power to stop him. If Juggler plays his cards right (Pun not intended), he could cause a cycle that allows him to summon more powerful monsters at a faster rate than Orb can keep up. |
Caught episode 2 of Orb, it seems like my previous thought was right and Gai and "Juggler" i think his name was, might have a history. Maybe something to do with the woman in the cold open in the first episode, or he's really not a music lover. We do get a bit more og Gai in this one as it seems like he's been in the town before at least. I don't mention the miniature much but i did like the shot of the interior building when Orb started running and things started shaking because of the weight. Always a nice touch IMO. As for the fight itself it was interesting to see Orb be observant in order to figure out a weakness, too bad the city got turned into Swiss cheese first. The SSP were there, it's interesting that Cap seems to be the only one with an outside job to keep up the bills and rent. Although she seems to have a stalker now.
|
Episode 4: This was awesome, I really enjoyed the fighting fire with fire part of it. Juggler and Gai's interaction continue to be great and Juggler's plan is intriguing. I am worried now that he has all the Kaiju cards so soon. I like seeing Gai be connected with the SSP because of the fun interactions but this kind of reminds me a lot of Superman with the SSP being his supporting cast and Gai in the role of Superman obviously. I think they might be going for that and it works well Gai is one of my favorite Ultra Warriors and Main characters too. The action was awesome and him using different special attacks was great. Burnmite was also awesome and like I said using an explosion to stop the giant Fireball monster was great too. Can't wait for the new form in the next episode.

Whelp, looks like my Ultraman Orb experience is over for now. The guy who uploaded the torrents for the Crunchyroll rips has vanished and I can’t watch past episodes on Crunchyroll itself because I have no idea. It only shows the upcoming simulcast for me and that’s not getting rid of my problems.
Guess I’ll have to use some shitty streaming sites but I would rather not. Fuck licensing man. Either make it available for everyone or don’t. Because licensing it in the west and thus making subbing groups obsolete but not offering your service outside of America or whatever Crunchyroll does is not helping me much. |

I'll just stream them, or maybe someone takes over and uploads the torrents for the rips to fill the hole. And in the extreme case I just wait until Crunchyroll gets their stuff together. Because Ultraman X is available in its entirety, so maybe they make the episodes available worldwide once the show is over or something? Anyways, thanks for the offer but I’ll get the stuff I need. Maybe someone else could use your help but I try to see what I can find. |

That'll do until I find something better, thanks :)

It's weird watching Orb right after I finished binging Den-o, Can't look at Gai the same...
|
Episode 5: My god Gai is just so badass and awesome. Seriously this guy kicks ass and is just so interesting. The Hurricane Slash Form is badass I love his lance and all those wind kicks were just amazing. I am loving the chemistry between Gai and the SSP they are all so much fun. This series is just so enjoyable I love the hell out of it. Interesting to see that the alien wanted to build his reputation through taking out Gai, I am really intrigued to see his past and why he would be wanted like that. I can't wait for more.

Episode 6: Gai continues to be one of the coolest Toku heroes ever. I am intrigued with the new villains introduced and how this is kind of like a three sided fight now. The SSP are still fun though and the mysteries of Gai continue to rise with him probably being 100 Years old or more. I do love his forms, Hurricane Slash is probably my favorite right now mainly because the Lance is totally wicked. I also love that Gai fights normally too he is definitely so kickass. This show is totally awesome.
|
I need a decent toy of Hyper Zetton Deathscythe. So ridiculously edgy but so so cool.
|
I like this show a lot but am I the only person who finds those three freaking annoying and useless to the plot in every respect.
|
Just watched episode 5 and, dear lord, this show is fantastic. I really liked how the fight was more at the center of the episode and they left plenty of time for follow-up at the end. Gai really continues to prove himself as a fantastic hero - he really does remind me of Hayakawa, and the incidental music is starting to drive that home with the more orchestral version of his harmonica song. I'm also enjoying how his relationship with Naomi is proceeding - it reminds me a lot of Kouga and Kaoru (which is nice, since my plan to rewatch Garo with the HD re-airing has been completely scuttled by Over-Time dropping the ball on it). I know it's early still, but I think this is already my favorite show of the year.
|
Episode 7: I really enjoyed this episode but it had Gai in it so I enjoy this whole series so far. Though it was Haruka and Gai connecting and Gai opening up about his past which was a high point. Also the whole fighting against fate/future I will always enjoy. I hope Haruka shows up again I enjoyed her whole character this episode. Great action too. I just can't wait to see what happens with the whole premonition she had with Gai. So much goodness in this series. I also am intrigued with Naomi's connection with Gai and just this weird feeling that Juggler might switch sides maybe down the line because they have him in the opening with the others and it's kind of just weird that the villain is with the other main heroes of the show. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I'll stick with my theory.
|
Just finished episode 7. Some of the Haruka story felt a little rushed - especially the part about her connection to the monster - but it was another good episode overall. I'm getting increasingly curious to see what Orb's true form is like.
|
Random find, but Naomi's actress was Sailor Mercury alongside the actress who was Yuri in Kiva(who was Jupiter) for one of the recent Sailor Moon Musicals.
http://i.imgur.com/ztuYlur.jpg I should catch up on the eps. Only saw up to episode 5 I think. |
