Kamen Rider Saber Episode 1- "In The Beginning, There Was A Swordsman Of Fire!"
Novelist Toma Kamiyama has a recurring dream about a mysterious new world and an invasion of our world. But what happens one day when his dream becomes a reality!?
Watch SuperHeroTime Via Livestream!! Check out episodes as they air on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block now start at 8PM EST on Saturdays! |
Not as spectacular as Zero-One's debut, but it's good so far.
Few minor gripes I have is that Touma suddenly has good swordsmanship skill despite his first outing as Kamen Rider. Aruto had some AI learning, so his was forgive and even he stumbled a bit. CGI scene was eh but I was surprised at myself that I didn't hate it. Tho, it could look less saturated to match the irl filming. Blades with the CGI lion tho! Calibur is very night rogue-y and purple, so I'm worried for him. But Horobi does exist tho. I like his buddies too, particularly the guy making the monsters. The ED dance is... Something. I do like the sword dancing with Saber, Blades, and Espada tho. Espada's gold and I like gold so... Hello there. |
|
Kamen Rider Saber's transformation was okay. Not a big fan of the grunts and 'hah!'s that was played through it though. It kind of ruined an otherwise almost perfect henshin sequence in my opinion.
The finisher was great on the other hand. I appreciate the upward Rider Kick. Really reminded me of Ryuki's finisher as he jumped off the dragon. The flipbook-like sequences was a great visual touch. |
Saber had a busy episode right off the start. It had a lot of good fighting and ton of CGI which made his debut stand out from other riders. I enjoy this Toma quite a lot just can't stand that screaming from the girl hopefully it stop in the later eps.
There a lot of plot details to get into. The first what happen to the guy who was Saber before Toma. Why did the ouja like rider (don't know the name) turn his back on Sword of Logos? What's the green madhatter guy deal? Also what secrets does the Books of Ancients have in it. Have to say I got so many good vibes from Saber first ep it fresh new and very different from other rider shows. I feel were in for a fun ride many things I like with Gaim, Ex-Aid, and Zi-O very big plot mystery riders and shocking twist. It feels so good to have rider be different again it bring out the hype and thrills of what rider all about. Hopefully this show will not make the same mistake like zero one did cough* gai cough* you know what I sayin. |
Hm... Remember when Kamen Rider was more cool than cringe? Just finished watching the first episode of Saber and... if I had to summarize my opinions, it would be that Saber felt more sentai-like than I would have preferred? I mean, in this one episode, we have goofy support characters, we have CGI henshins, we have a group of villains hidden in the shadows watching over the monster attacking, we have a literal growing/giant monster... an ENDING THEME? It felt very, very Magiranger to me, especially with the purple knight badguy.Other than that, there are some things I liked, and some red flags.
Pros: - The suit designs are awesome. - The belt and gimmick toys are actually rather cool. - Admittedly, the CGI wasn't cringy and the action was quite good. - The backstory/lore with the swordsmen is really fascinating. Cons: - Too many children. Sorry, but I'm just not a fan of child actors, even in kid's shows. The fact that our main character is a bookshop owner that caters to children is worrying. - The monsters are yet again generic and don't relate to anything. I don't understand how they were able to nail the monsters so well in some series, but just fail to do so in other shows. Other observations: - We don't even have specific victims this time around? I'm not sure whether this is a con or not (as the victim thing has been done to death), but how on Earth are they going to make us care for what's happening each week and keep us emotionally invested? I'd love for a serialized story once again like Gaim, but with this premise and set-up? I highly doubt it's going to happen. - The Ridebooks look to feature more heavily in the plot and mythos than the Progrise Keys, which is great. However, it remains to be seen if they will play any significant role in the plot or be weaved into it in any meaningful way. Like, are they just going to be given and handed new Ridebooks instead of having to at least earn them somehow? Urgh, I hope not. |
Saber seems like I'll have a fun time watching it.
One thing I will say for certain, holy cow that diorama that Touma has in his bookstore is like seriously amazing to look at! |
Well the music is good.
The tone was completely different than I expected. No matter what, I'll be looking forward to this season! |
So..... Any idea who's going to be subbing the series considering over-time announced they're sitting this one out?

A busy first episode. Pacing, dialogue and story aren't really doing it for me at the moment. I get it's episode 1 and they need to fit in a lot of stuff into a (shorter than usual) runtime so I don't fault them, just feels kind of like stuff happens simply cause it needs to. Doesn't feel natural.
On the other hand, music and visuals are really nice and fresh, the CG stuff is mediocre as always but the way they are utilizing it is interesting. I also love the suit design and the sword choreography is really awesome. From having a narrator Kakuranger-style to including an ending sequence for the first time since Hibiki (and our first ever Sentai-style ending dance - though the choreography is definitely more complex), I can't say the series doesn't feel unique. They are trying something new. There's a lot of familiar aspects of course but the overall tone feels different. So I look forward to future episodes of Saber and I hope it doesn't have the same issues its predecessor Ghost did. |

Genmcorp is still "???" I guess so they can still decide to do it. |
Oh right two things I'll note since I don't have much else to say without proper subtitles.
So it seems like the full CG Segments are made using Unreal Engine? Which is kinda cool. Not sure if that extends to their normal CG too but still. Also, this is like what... the first time we've had an Eyecatch in Rider since... Black RX? (Not counting Brain's special) |

The jester like clown narrator, bgm, and somewhat reminds me of trying to be harry potter /shonen anime like fairy tales. The rainbow color doesn't match the darker snippet origins of the original saber/toma early childhood loss. It doesn't reflect well. And people used to complain about shit cars ruining epic proto drive intro. I feel riders will never go bask to the extreme serious dramas and deaths anymore . Build and gaim to an extent exaid and 01 tried, but reset it later . It's so weird seeing the qr codes on the props as well. It's like sentai mecha suit/cgi tried to be accurate to the toys by showing the cluster leg parts during big combinations back in ninninger. The secondary rider looks kind of like Mitchy from gaim though. The lead actress might be another akiko. I feel like thus year it'll be another ryuken where driver/weapon plays all the gimmick sounds, but the dinky sword take the fantasy fun out of it. The stock animation will get tiring if the used the same henshin sequence like sentai and the books are like 90s game cartiages. I agree he was too pro in tranformatiin sequences. It's like this wasnt his debut fight. The actor was performing like a pro kind of cocky in a way displaying how much he train for this moment. It'll make sense if he was a student training to fight like kabuto. It's a been a while since I've seen ryuki, but I feel the cgi for world changing haven't improved that much. Even with pandemic I'm sure thru could of polished it a bit more at home. Usually, they tend hide bad cgi with dark lighting . Still practical effect is the way to go for riders with minor cgi . The sentai like martial art dancing sequence will def take the drama out of serious eps. Kind of waste for the epic old school music. The end shot feel like espada is the heroine, but it isn't. She's likely the older sister/ comedy relief. The blue lion though. We're back to fantasy animals like ryusoul Dino's, |
Need to rewatch it with subs to understand everything but the show is totally Wizard. I have the exact same feeling watching this and Wizard in terms of atmosphere, dynamic and setting.
I have a "meh" feeling about the "sister/friend who disappeared when we were kids" plot (only because that's a common trope, I have nothing against it itself). Caliber using a voice changer reminds me of Rogue as well like someone said. I guess he is someone we will meet quite quickly and we could intentify him by his voice if they didn't modify it, just like Gentoku. Everything else is ok for me. the CGI is not so good but the sequence reminds me of GARO enough to find it okay. The goofyness is here, but usually the 1st ep is always more goofy than the entire show itself (rewatched ex-aid recently and the 1st ep is wtf in that aspect. I didn't remember it was that much). But you have to catch kids attention so that's normal. |
I liked this episode quite a bit. While I am a little skeptical still about the ED, I'm hoping that for more serious episodes, they'll forego showing it like they've cut the OP in previous seasons.
While the pacing it a bit much, I feel like it's more comparable to other Rider series openers as opposed to Ghost's. Ghost's first episode's pacing was horrible, it moved so fast that by the end I wasn't even sure what happened. So this one reminds me more of other Rider series' premieres. There's a lot to fit into the first episode, so the pacing is a little off, but the same could be said for a lot of Riders. For some of the criticisms, the kid actors are nothing new. Not a huge part of the show, but it's almost like a semi-running thing to have kids in premieres. Most notably with Ex-Aid. Speaking of... the CG henshins I doubt will be long lasting. Ex-Aid had these too, but they were eventually mostly abandoned as the series progressed and if they were used, it was often cut down to be as fast as a normal non-stock henshin. I see some people complaining about Touma being too good a swordsman already. I can kinda see why that's annoying, but also that is literally every Rider ever. Period. How many Riders were non-fighters or didn't have some sort of fighting in their background, yet somehow put up super convincing fights in their opening episodes? Emu, for example, literally somehow understands how to fight and use power ups in reality out of nowhere and use them to overpower Salty. Yes he's a gamer and a doctor, but he barely takes a hit in his first battle. Most times, the stumbling initial fight, is usually the only time they stumble in one. After that, they're suddenly a lot more adept at fighting monsters. I found this to be a perfectly acceptable opening episode, especially in light of Ghost being not so good. As for the head writer, I think we need to note that he wrote LESS than half of Ghost, and the episodes he wrote tend to be the better ones. He also wrote the Specter movie, which I thought was pretty damn good. And while I don't think Ghost is a good series, and it's probably one of my least favorites, I'm willing to give this guy's writing another chance. If you're on the fence about watching the show, I'd recommend giving it a try. Not every writer's work will turn out good, the same thing can be applied to game developers or movie directors. tl;dr Pretty decent opener. I have a few concerns, but I'm willing to let the show develop and air more than one episode before deciding whether or not to watch it. |
for those interested genmcorp has the subs (they were still not sure to do it, I guess they will. phew).
after watching with subs : Nothing too important was missed. It's a very solid episode. The only few gripes people can have are the ones from recent shows IMO. the goofyness (especially Mei in this ep), the "I know how to fight out of nowhere" and the CGI. But those are common now, everything else is cool so far. If I really had to find something kinda bad to say, is that I feel the debut fight is less impressive and impactful than Zero-One. I remember Zero-one had that crazy finisher going through the mantis magia and some camera shots (like the one on Zero-one foot just before the finisher) were kinda new and refreshing. |

Maybe if you held hands properly instead of doing a pinky swear she wouldn't fly off to the unknown. This is your fault, really. First episodes tend to be rough, but I will say this felt like watching a Sentai under a Kamen Rider title. Main Rider is red, there are children, ancient civilization from another world, the villains looked like they came out of Sentai, and even the monster of the week grew giant. Are we sure this is not the rejected pilot for RyuSoulger? |
So we have the Red Saber and next episode we have the Blue Saber.
Then from the ED we have a Yellow Saber. This is Seiken Sentai, Kamen Rider Sabers! /jk Love the energy, definitely youthful, although Blue Saber's crows feet when he grinned/smiled really added a lot of years to the otherwise youthful cast. |
Aw man, so many others already saying this feels more like Sentai, and I wanted to come in here just to shout that. I mean not only is the aesthetic, music and overall presentation reminding me of Ryusoulger specifically (Calibur is like a mix of Genm and Gaisorg), but I was also reminded of first episodes of sentai, specifically Zyuohger, where our humble protagonist's modest life is upturned but he's quick to don the red suit to save the day while the existing heroes (Blades in this case) just stand back and watch.
Not saying any of this as a complaint though, this was otherwise a standard and decent episode of a toku show, I just think it's really surreal! It's really making me want to put on my conspiracy theorist ha, though. Toei/Bandai is no doubt aware of the kind of expectations people have come to have of both Rider and Sentai. A really wild part of my mind keeps thinking that one of two things might happen. Either everything about the established presentation of Saber is gonna get turned on it's head at the halfway point in order to surprise viewers... or this is a sign that Sentai is gonna get less and less prominent, with all it's usual profitable tropes being given to Rider!? Well, that's just a wild tangent based on little to nothing. Here's to a year of magical fun and swordsmanship. |
Wow, this is Ghost as s***, isn't it? That's the thought I kept coming back to watching this one, and, for anyone who isn't familiar with my opinions on Ghost, I'm saying I loved this episode.
I think it's immediately apparent the show has the same writer and producer as Ghost especially because it's inheriting a lot of the flaws of Ghost's premiere, too. The story feels in a rush to get where it needs to be, and a lot of beats are kind of awkward when you take a second to think about them. The first thing we see Touma do is start talking to himself to give exposition. It's not spectacularly tight, natural plotting. But there's also the same sense of humanity and exuberance here that I loved about Ghost. I love Touma's passion, and how the episode uses that to give things a nice throughline of him wanting to make kids happy, which, in contrast to the clunk elsewhere, is a very simple and smooth way to demonstrate his heroism. I really warmed up to Mei pretty much immediately because all her loud antics spring out of her being enthusiastic. I like that stuff. I like stories about people who seem excited to exist. Above all else, that's where Saber is going right for me straight from the starting line. Stylistically, I like it, but man is it a lot to take in. I feel like I need to go back and watch the episode again to digest every little CM bumper, page-flippy finishing move, and all those little strings of Rider-Moji before I can make any real statements — and maybe that statement is damning in of itself — but at the very least, I always appreciate the work put in to give a series its own unique aesthetic. Nothing here was exactly unappealing to me; it's just not easy to get a handle on right away. The action was solid and you can definitely see them trying new things. That little CG sequence was basically completely unnecessary and adding nothing to this episode, but you can tell from how relatively nice it looks (go look at any scene with a Time Mazine again if you disagree) that Toei is trying to push themselves with what they can do, and there will probably be some long-term benefits to scenes like that. I might actually end up going back to rewatch this, and maybe point out more minor things I noticed, but for now, these are the broad strokes. I thought this was a fun premiere with a pretty irresistible energy, and at the end of the day, a hero in a cool suit fought a monster and brought a family together again. I'm watching Kamen Rider, and I'm happy. |
I don’t really get the Sentai comparisons as they feel superficial. "He's nice to children!"... like every other Kamen Rider? "He's red!"... like many other Kamen Riders? "He fights a giant monster!"... yeah, but like, it's not "miniature city"-giant and Saber doesn’t summon a robot so?
I don't know. Sentai didn’t pop up in my head once watching this, at all. It's just Kamen Rider. And for a first Rider episode it was okay. None of them every blew me away, they need all the time they can get to establish a basic foundation of the world, its characters and the Rider himself so of course it’s always a breakneck pace with little time for creative writing. But actually commenting on what I saw: I liked it. The premise is very much rooted in fantasy which I enjoy, books as a central theme are awesome and the visuals are stunning. Even the fully CGI "Saber vs. some random rocks"-scene was okay really, it looked like a decent videogame cutscene instead of a cheap one, although the cuts were super weird. Golem-guy flips the pages... why exactly? What was he hoping to accomplish here? And the scene itself suffered massively from the cut between the full CG-footage and the ones with the suits in it, mainly because the lightning didn’t match at all, it seemed like they were in two entirely different places. But still, the overall presentation with the giant book and the fantasy world was great. The characters, from the little I’ve seen so far, are acceptable. Touma is a likable main protagonist, Mei is okay but I fear she might get too annoying later on, and blue lion guy barely did anything to I can't say much. The narrator guy took me by surprise, he looks outlandishly weird. But, I'm okay with that - I get the feeling he's an ancient being which documents the stories that have written our world, he may have been the author too actually. I just wonder if he will appear in the story or just narrate it. I think I would prefer the later, although his importance could be made more obvious if he drops in from time to time like DJ Sagara. Lastly: The action was fine. Nothing super-amazing like Zero-One but thankfully not super-lame like Zi-O either. Just a decent middle ground. But I like that we were once again allowed to have a first episode were just the base Rider suit appeared. They didn't force the first alternate form or the bike in there which is nice. All in all I think it was fine. Simple fun, nothing more, nothing less. |

In the henshin sequence, Touma does a diagonal cross slash to draw the mask on to his suit. It's like Shinkenger, but the pen and the sword are the same thing! I'm impressed with how the symbiosis shows Touma as a master of both and the fact that there's actually a henshin sequence, something that hasn't really been done since EX-Aid.
Awesome premiere! Touma feels a lot like a natural Kamen Rider protagonist, actively trying his best to make kids happy with his books. Mei is immediately very likable with a lot of high energy. I can't judge Rintarou yet, since his real introduction is in the next episode. Not sure if they're trying to make Tassle the next Woz, but it's not working for me so far. It makes sense to have a third person narrator to tell the story like a book but he doesn't have much presence. The imagery of books in the fight between Saber and Golem is used to cool effect, maybe a little too much and unnecessary, but it's like moving the part of the city where this episode takes place could be considered a clever metaphor for plagiarism. We also get our first detailed look at Espada in the ending and I think the faerie tale sides make the best suits so I hope Kenzan and Slash will look just as cool. The only suits that don't really work for me are Blades and Buster. Looking forward to more Saber and I hope it maintains this level of quality! |
So this seems to be the way we'll be going to help with filming, just these little touches, having tons of stock footage available for finishers and stuff, the fact that we have eyecatches again, Opening and Ending, and stuff like our narrator who is alone and not an active participant (for the moment).
The full Unreal Engine CGI scenes though also seem to be a part of this, at least from a logic perspective. Having CGI segments in an engine they have assets for helps them pad out the episode for however long they want. It also fits with a theory I have in-universe. So why was Mr. Golem flipping pages? I'd like to imagine that the further you get into Book World the more animated it becomes. You could see that with the green screen where both suits are put over a background that doesn't seem quite there. Then he attacks Touma with a bunch of rocks that force him into the next page, a deeper more animated segment hence the CG, he wasn't just randomly slashing through rocks, those rocks followed him into the CG segment, and it seemed like he had enough power to attack between the pages. At least that's how I pictured it anyway. Given they have an engine to work with and likely assets and backgrounds, I can see this becoming a more common place thing. Anyway onto the episode itself, yeah I'll be honest and echo a few people here in saying, "How is this Sentai?" Like I can't tell if some of you are legit or are trying to run a bit here. Because it really didn't feel like Sentai to me? And while I'm not a Sentai connoisseur I've seen enough Sentai itself. This feels very Zero-One in terms of pacing tbh, especially given we're getting our Secondary Rider next week with no sign of a auxiliary Wonder Ride Book in sight. Speaking of Blades... honestly I have to clap, that man knows how to make an entrance at the end riding his blue lion... also "homo sapiens", your just trying to be fancy aren't you blue lion guy? But gathering my thoughts so I don't ramble, it's a fun episode, gets you up to speed with what you need to know about the two leads, introduces some mystery on both sides of the Megido and Sword of Logos. You get bits and pieces, just to hook you, and it seems once we visit the Sword of Logos next week we'll be getting a more detailed explanation. |
Quote:
Also, the homo sapiens is probably just a "haha primitive fantasy guy" moment. |

I thought the episode was..okay. I know It's just the first episode, but you get a feel on what the show's gonna be. It looks as though it's gonna go for a slower pace in terms of plot.
|
anyone else think that because we have 3 riders and the them is books we might get a 3 musketeers book power up ? something like the trinity watch from zi-o ?
|
So, yeah... this happened.
I'm not 100% sure, I'd have to go back and check, but I may have mentioned my somewhat negative response to Kamen Rider Ghost on this board once. Possibly. I feel like it's the sort of thing I wouldn't have dwelled on, certainly not several years after the show ended. Regardless, I was not 1000% thrilled to have Ghost's writer back on board, but I wanted to go into the show with an open mind and no immediate prejudices. And then the first shot opens on a motherfucking clown with a turquoise wig and giant fake mustache. You're not working with me here, Saber. I'm not ragequitting the show after one episode. It's really early and it's not fair to judge anything too harshly yet. The first episode was badly rushed and the plot will likely calm down once we get most of the characters and plot established. I'm also really curious to see what the show looks like once it's burned through its CGI budget (this episode feels very much like Fukuda telling Toei "So you took away the budget from my last show to make Amazons? Well I am literally going to make you pay for that now!"). It's hard to judge much about the characters or the story since we get so little. I think I like Touma? He's very... standard tokusatsu hero-y; lots of shouting about protecting people and making promises and shit. Mei is our Akiko/Shunpei/Onari comic relief sidekick. I'm automatically disinclined to like her, but at least she's only over-acting a little bit. I do like the gimmick of the monster creating a weird pocket dimension, but I only see that lasting until the episode budget starts shrinking. I totally get the Sentai comparisons. It's not because there are kids; there is a definite aesthetic to the show that is very Sentai. The goofy sound effects and humor are part of that - they make the show feel like its skewing towards a younger audience than Zero-One. The stock footage transformation and attacks are a huge part of it, though. That is a very Sentai technique. And then there's the end credits... It's neat that we have an ending theme again. Some of my favorite Kamen Rider songs are from the ending credits. That said, I hate this ending with a passion. I was literally talking back to the computer screen as it aired, saying things like "What? This is not a dancing credits. No. No, no, no. This isn't fucking Sentai." Yeah, I just... no. That was awful. Never do this again, Kamen Rider. That was probably a pretty rambling post. I'm writing this immediately after watching the episode while I have a lot of thoughts running through my head. Sorry if that was all kind of a jumble. tl;dr: I'm seeing a lot of red flags, but I'm willing to give the show a chance to win me over. No more dancing ever. |
Actually despite what I said about other similarities, the ending dance reminds me not of Sentai, but more like the kinds you see in those Japanese evening live-action slice-of-life shows. I mean I've not really watched many shows like that, but the enclosed space, elaborate movements and modest-energy song just gave me that impression. It doesn't strike me as the kind of dancing tune they're gonna get the kids to dance along to at stage shows or anything.
|
I can't speak to the Sentai comparisons because I've never really watched Sentai, but to me, this felt like a pretty standard, by-the-books (;)) first episode of Kamen Rider. Didn't really feel all that different or unusual to me compared to many other first episodes of this franchise.
That said, overall, I think I liked it for the most part. Yeah it was rushed, and most of the humor was more obnoxious than funny, but again, I expect that from a first episode. I don't expect either of those things to be long-lasting issues. Everything else though I was pretty interested in. Not much to say yet about any of the characters, but I did like Touma. The big takeaway for me though was how much I'm into the whole aesthetic of it, which I wasn't expecting at all. Based on the promotional images, I wasn't terribly impressed by the suit designs, but after seeing the main Saber suit in action, it really won me over. I like that suit a lot now, I thought it looked really great on screen and in motion. And along with that, I just liked the general style of the show. The fantasy world looked cool, and I thought the music was good. I'm surprised by how much I ended up liking all that, considering how uninterested in it I was after the initial reveals. So yeah it was an overall good start to me, pleasantly surprised. All of my issues with it are things that plague most first episodes of Kamen Rider, so I'm not terribly bothered by them as of now. Looking forward to seeing where this goes. |
This show, first episode in,kinda blows...all the things I hate about toku in one episode.
VERY "Kamen Sword Sentai" I lost interest about 20 minutes in. Even Ghost didn't turn me off like this until about 20 episodes in. Still gonna buy his Figuarts, though. Gotta get them all. Not much to add except felt like I was watching the *newest* Sentai show v-cinema..who knows, maybe it will get less lame |

Hi, I'm new in the forum so I just want to give my impressions overall. English isn't my first language so I hope to not mess it up a lot.
I have been reading all your messages, and while I agree with them, I think the biggest problem with this episode is the way the scenes were cut. For example, the scene where Touma is trying to save his friend/sister just with his pinky, it feels dumb and a forced way to indicate friendship. However, like 10 seconds before, you can see how they were holding their hands, but your attention as a viewer is focused around the big portal sucking everything, there's no way you can notice it in your first time watching it. I would rather put them holding hands, but then their lose their grip and have to use the pinky as a last resort. Then Touma says something like "I promise I'll protect you" or something like that and then the girl is sucked into the book, just by that I think all the emphasis on promises would have had better impact. Another scene that lost that "wow" effect on me when was Touma was trying to reach Rekka, because when the sword appears, by perspective, it feels like it is two or three meters away from Touma. We see that he's trying to protect from the flames but I never felt that he was moving, maybe just add a shot of his feet trying to walk would have convinced me. I get what they were trying to accomplish, it just didn't land on me. Another thing I would like to talk is why I the disconnection between Touma as civilian and as a rider feel so strong. Because, riders being experts at combat is nothing new, it's a trope at this point. However, for me it's the scene where the monster changes the scenario where this feels the most. Let's assume that as books, these things contain the knowledge to fight, however knowledge is not the same as execution. When Touma adapts so quickly at these changes it feels like really choreographed. Something I think Ghost and Zero-One handled much better, because, if memory serves right, When Takeru first transformed he had troubles with floating around, while Aruto couldn't calculate how much power his legs had at the moment. These minor details keep the illusion that we're seeing a rookie in the beginning of their journey. Also, even those green screen and CGI scenario felt really disconnected, aside from illumination, they felt random. I don't know that's just my opinion. On the subject of being too Sentai, I never felt the Sentai feeling until I saw the big monster, because I have seen that kind of shot multiple times in Power Rangers and Sentai. So at the moment I didn't know what to make for it, because I had no sense of scale. And, to be honest, I didn't got it. At the start of the battle it looks like a 20-meter tall monster, then after the finisher it looks like 5-meter tall and goes back to 20 right after that scene. Moving on to more positive things. The suit is amazing, it has two color combinations that I love, red & black and red & white. The CGI, while not the best, it accomplishes what it needs to do. I have to give props to the imagery of the pages making the finisher and also when Blades enters the scene, because it feels that they're narrating the story/legend/tale of this new Kamen Rider. Mei is kind of annoying, however it's too early to judge, I think if this response it's loud enough they will tone her down. I mean, Aruto used to yell a lot before, so I'll just wait. Overall, it's a weak first episode, but also had to give us a lot of information in a really short amount of time. I have extended a lot in this post, so I'll just leave it there. I hope future posts don't being so long but I just had a lot of thoughts in my mind and I had to get them out. |
So I really dig Touma as a main character. Alot of times shows like this have the protagonist just be nice to a random kid to let us know he's a hero. But I dig that he seems to genuinely like children, to the point where he opened up a store to make kids happy about reading & have fun imagining & making up stories. It feels like a different type of pure & I dig that.
The CGI was weird, not sure if I'll get used to it or not. The Henshin was alot, hopefully they'll tone it down in future episodes. They did throw alot of stuff at us very early, but I feel like it'll be fleshed out ad time goes on. Overall so long as Touma stays wholesome & fun I'm done to keep up with Saber. |

Even one throwaway line like "I feel the sword's power flowing through me, it's telling me what to do!" or something, suggesting that the techniques of its former master are imprinted on the blade and simply by transforming into Saber, Touma has a basic access to the might of the previous Saber. But yes, it's Kamen Rider, this has all happened before and it will happen again. Quote:
Keep up the great work; I look forward to reading more from you in the future :) |
I did not like this episode. The dialogue felt very odd for me to the point that a tiny part of me hoped Gemn Corps slipped up on their subbing. But hopefully it's just because this was a very packed up first episode where episode 2 is better.
Also is the blue rider really named Blades? |
