What are you watching? Other Toku Series Edition
For Ultraman, Godzilla, Tomica Hero, and everything in between!
|
Just sitting down to watch Super Inframan. Not entirely sure what to expect, but I've heard good things.
|
Watching Epiosde one of RyuKendo, and after that I'm actually going to try some Ultraman. Just don't know which one yet.
|
I want to watch Godzilla, but the movie I want to watch (Vs. Destroyah) I don't have Eng Subbed, only a dubbed version...
|
Lately, I have been working through Ultraman , the original. Just past the halfway point and I love it. The plots are getting more creative and the monsters getting more creative as well. The characters ars hitting a stride. And the fights are still a blast!
Also recently watched the dub of Godzilla vs King Ghidorah for my podcast (check out my signature). The sub I have is a rough HK bootleg, so even the pretty mediocre dubbing is preferable. I still like this movie quite a bit. There's some really oddball elements, but it still plays out great as a throwback to the Golden Age daikaiju films from the 60s. On the docket: Brain 17, the dub of several episodes of Daitetsujin 17, the Toei giant robo show from the 70s. |
Oh yeah, I got my VR Troopers Season 1 Volume 1 box so that will be on the agenda! A friend of mine was a huge VR Troopers fan so I might give him a call to have some nostalgia.

Rescue Fire 21. It was okay. The Tsubasa/Ritsuka and Yuuma/Tama relationships continue to be frustratingly one-sided, and Taiga continues to be level-headed and awesome. I also always appreciate it when a show doesn't immediately use their new combination in every preceding episode(Great Wyvern in 19). 22 looks relatively cool, even if it's just due to the grey filters. Really looking forward to when Jokaen joins the show.
|
Ah, I was waiting for someone to make this thread.
Need to get back to Garo, since I'm up to episode 15 of it. Really good show, though it is a very slow burn until after the recap episode. |
Rescue Fire 22. I loved the part at the beginning, with Taiga, Tatsuya, and Tsubasa watching the weather report, and Taiga confessing his... comfort from watching the weather girl, and Tatsuya and Tsubasa just look at him like he's from another planet and say "Okay..." It's the background music and Taiga's usual calm disposition that makes it awesome.
Besides that, the episode was standard fare. Though it's interesting how they're destroying a natural disaster, and made me raise some philosophical questions within my psyche. Also, destroying a hurricane with lightning and Nissans. Only in Tomica Hero! |
Rescue Fire 23. That was a nice episode. Tatsuya's interpretation of an Extreme Fire emergency was awesome, and this episode did a much better job with the "real world emergency group focus episode" than Rescue Force. Plus, there's some epic firetruck-fu, and a new Insert Song! Next episode looks even better. I really hope this isn't as good as it gets. It would be a damned shame if Rescue Fire went on the same path as it's predecessor.
|
Rescue Fire 24. Awww yeeeeah. This episode rocked. The ante is upped yet again when Ukaen receives more power from Donkaen, and Rescue Fire fails to put out the Extreme Fire for the first time! No new combinations to help them this time! I also love it when an episode starts out in the middle of a fight. And next episode features the return of UFDA Director Kamen Rider(yes, the actor of the original Kamen Rider plays a recurring character in Rescue Fire). God, I love this show.

Ultraman Episode 22 -- Surface Destruction Maneuver. Fun episode with the Underground People and their monster Telesedon trying to conquer the surface world. The daikaiju effects are really strong, with the model Tokyo Telesedon destroys being superb. There's a great sequence of Captain Muramatsu and Arashi battling Telesedon win the VTOL while Hayata is trapped and thus Ultraman cannot help.
Only downsides were the unconvincing makeup for the Underground People (essentially adhesive bandages over their eyes -- a scary look but not pulled off effectively) and the subtitles being way out of sync with the dialogue on my Mill Creek DVD for this episode, meaning I had to watch the dub. The subtitles have been fine so far so hopefully this is an isolated incident. |
Ultraman Episode 23 -- My Home Is Earth. Talk about a 180 from the previous episode! This is the famous and very well-regarded episode with Jamila, the monster who was a human astronaut exposed to something mysterious in space and transformed into a monster. There's a lot of pathos for Jamila, and a lot of character development on display, especially for Ide, but also for Muramatsu and Fuji. Ide, generally the comic relief, feels very strongly about Jamila, and it gives the writers an opportunity to pontificate about science and sacrifice.
The scenes of Jamila writhing in his death throes at the feet of the Peace Conference compound are quite upsetting. The fact that this scene is followed up with his funeral and the dedication of a plaque in his honor hammer this home. There's also some really bold use of white-out lighting, as a key scene takes place at night with big spotlights in place, and the camera repeatedly gets (purposelly) washed out in the bright lights. Very avant garde for a show of this era. Really strong episode all around. Very heartfelt. And the subtitles were back in sync, too! |
Ultraman Episode 24 -- The Undersea Science Base. Fairly average episode. The monster Gubira is a gigantic narwhal, so the fight goes about as expected. There's some neat trick underwater photography, and we get to see the S25 submarine which is always nice. But the most noteworthy aspect of this ep is that we get to see Fuji in a wetsuit! Hubba hubba!
Last one for tonight, honest! EDIT: Oh yeah, the subtitles were out of sync again. Strange. |
Rescue Fire 25. Really nice episode. As much as I liked R1 Max's debut, it looks like Fire-1X's is going to be even better(Fire-1X debuts in 26). I kinda wish this episode focused more on X-Dragon, since he's technically a whole new character and all, but whatever. Next episode looks to be a lot like Rescue Force's sub-finale episode. I just hope Jokaen isn't as horrible a character as Maen(though Donkaen is nothing more than a non-character, so hopefully there's nowhere to go but up, right?).
|
Rescue Fire 26. Really great episode. Donkaen turning into a giant flaming western dragon is pretty ironic, considering Rescue Fire is almost solely themed after dragons(though they are mostly Asian dragons, except for Great Wyvern). I love the implied limitations of the X-Basher at the end. From the preview, Jokaen at least looks more serious than Maen. I just hope his personality isn't flat out dumb.
|
@ShockerCon, I think every time one of us posts in this thread, everyone knows what we are going to talk about! :D
Digging hearing your thoughts on Rescue Fire! |

Anyway, Rescue Fire 27. And yup, Jokaen is awesome. While his personality is kinda like Maen, he's a much better character, because he's actually a threat. Plus his design is way better than a goth lolita robot(seriously, he's like Ankh spent a decade in the nuthouse, and I love it). It's really interesting how even though Tatsuya said he was just sleeping after he fainted in the last episode, he fainted again. I just know he's hiding about what happened to keep everyone else from panicking and taking away the X-Basher. I think I'll stop for today. I've really been neglecting some other shows. |
Rescue Fire 28. A Yuuma episode. It was good enough. DozerDragon got to do the Final Rescue, so that's cool. Next episode looks great, cause Tsubasa.

Ultraman Episode 25 -- The Dreaded Comet Tuisphon. This episode was like two different stories combined -- one, about the titular comet coming close to Earth and causing cosmic wonkiness, the other about the monsters Red King, Gigas and Dorako fighting. Both aspects are good but they do seem a little at odds with each other.
All three monsters are great. Red King is of course classic. He really fights like a puroresu heel in this episode, including putting Dorako in a modified Boston Crab. (He pulls his tail instead of his leg.) Gigas is amazing simply because he is a modified version of the Jamil costume. And Dorako is sort of like a proto-Gigan, being a space monster with hooks for hands and strange wings on his back. Also has some great location shots of the Japanese Alps! (Subtitles back in sync again...) |
Ultraman Episodes 26 & 27 -- The Monster Prince Pt.1 and Pt.2. Also known as "Gomora shows up and wrecks up the place." I never saw what the big deal about Gomora was until these episodes. He may not have the most outrageous design but he is tough as hell and has a really strong personality. He is one badass daikaiju!
Overall the two episodes play like a sort of mini-movie. There's a lot of Gomora rampaging through Osaka as well as fighting the JSDF, like you would see in a daikaiju movie. The sequence of Gomora destroying Osaka Castle was feature worthy, for instance. The human plot, with the monster-obsessed young boy who is the titular prince, was cute as well. There's also a scene where the kid plays with his Ultraman and monster toys, which has recognizable Ultra Q Monsters Gomess and Kanegon on display! How neat! A really fun two-parter with a great foe for Ultraman. |
VR Troopers Episodes 1-3 -- The Battle Begins Pts 1 & 2, Error in the System. Took a break from Ultraman and turned my brain off for a while with these shows. Man, VR Troopers was such a zany show. It's impressive how much the whole thing holds together considering it's Frankenstein's monster like origins. Still holds up as silly entertainment for sure.
Also amazing how a show about super technology looks so danged low rent, heh. :lol After almost 20 years, Battle Grid Mode still makes no sense to me. What's the point? And why does the Virtual World look exactly the same as the real world? I mean, I know WHY why, but still! I still love Ziktor and his Skug-babes in the real world, plus Grimlord and his Virtual Dark Fortress full of his minions in the Virtual World, though. Also odd is that while I really like JB and Kaitlin's designs (from Spielban), I have never really warmed to Ryan's armor (from Metalder). I guess it looks "too different" from the previous Metal Heroes like Gavan, Shaider, etc., whereas Spielban and Diana look more in-line. Still, have to admit I enjoyed myself watching them. Pure nostalgia trip back to freshman year in HS when I would watch an hour-long block of this show and Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad on Channel 11 in NY while working out after school. "Hail Grimlord, Master of the Virtual World!" |

It's relatively simple. Anyway, watched the Tokyo SOS/Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla movie duo. Love 'em. I know a lot of people didn't like them due to the increased focus on the human factor (Much like Final Wars), but it's still solid with a great story. |
Well, you see, you download BitTorent here, download the torrent files you want, you put them into BitTorrent, then you download them.
Simple. :lol Quote:
|
Sure, make it sound so simple. I'll download it in the morning. I don't have the brainpower right now to do much :lol

But I agree so much. I'd kill for a Monster Art Kiryu. One of my favorite Kaiju designs of all time. Quote:

I know. They're on my list to watch, along with the rest of the Showa series, since I've only seen Gojira.
|
Quote:
You haven't see any Showa series beyond Gojira? |
Yeah. Haven't bought any other Showa movies besides Gojira. Got all and seen all the Heisei movies though. :D

Anyway, I really enjoyed GxMG and GMM:Tokyo SOS specifically because of the enhanced human factor. They play like an adaption of a manga, especially GxMG. The opening sequence of that with the Maser tank is one of the best human bits in the entire series, I think. |
I wasn't a big fan of Against, but I loved Tokyo SOS. I should give Against a rewatch though because its been years since I watched it.
|
You people have funny terminology. "Against?" How droll. :D
