Bandai America loses Power Rangers license
From Saban
After a successful 25-year partnership building the iconic action franchise, Power Rangers, Saban Brands and Bandai have mutually agreed not to renew their global Power Rangers master toy license agreement, effective April 2019. Bandai will continue to support Power Rangers, including the 2018 commemoration of the Power Rangers 25th anniversary and the current season, Super Ninja Steel. In addition, Bandai, through its partnership with Toei Company Ltd., will continue to exploit toy rights for the Super Sentai series, which has enjoyed over 40 years of success, in Japan and select other Asian territories. |
That is... quite a bombshell.

Wow. What does Bandai of America have left that could keep it alive as a powerhouse? Serious question here. |
Vangelus brought it up on Twitter but...yeah, how would the licensing even work now?
Like...Toei and Bandai produce Sentai goods. PR is a Sentai translation. Sooo...yeah...This is such a weird and shocking call. |
Interesting.

Big news
|
Huh. Interesting.
Curious to see where this will go now. |
now if judd gets rid of the writers, my faith in pr will be restored.
|
I am wondering how PLEX is going to figure into all of this and if that means no more American exclusive designs. Now I could be wrong but isn't PLEX a divison of Namco Bandai.
It's a longshot, but I hope that someone like Bluefin gets distribution rights to start to bring over some Sentai merchandise. Also I hope Hasbro doesn't get the license, they control too much of the market right now. |
Wow I didn't see this happening at all.
|
Honestly, if this is true I'm kind of happy. Assuming that Hasbro will start producing action figures for power rangers, I think they will do a much better job than Bandai America especially with the legacy line.
My biggest complaint with Bandai America is that they are cheap, really cheap, and it shows in their products. And the worst part is they justify low quality by saying if they add one more extra paint application or accessory then the figure would be too expensive to produce, when other companies are able to do the same things better and cheaper. Lately I've been thinking about what the legacy line could be if it fell into the hands of the right company and now we just might get that answer. We may finally get figures that actually have collector quality |
Damn . i wonder what will happen to them without their cash cow. I feel like playmates and hasbro are good options for pr. Playmates did a good job on voltron.
|
Wow....just....wow. Here's to hoping we get better products!
|
I do hope this means that the Legacy figures will feature better sculpts, since it seemed BOA was terrified of giving men and women normal proportions.
|
Hm, wonder what this'll mean for Legacy roleplay items.
I should note that at least a few people currently working on Transformers are former employees of Bandai America, before we get all doom and gloom, but man, this is a game changer. |
Being an employee of BoA isn't a bad thing. It was just the unnecessary restrictions Bandai had on the figures that was the issue.

I really REALLY REALLY hope they at least finish out the 6.5 inch legacy teams they've started.
And that Hasbro continues the line. |
I hope we still get Legacy Shogun Megazord eventually.
|
Oh yeah guys, what does this mean for zord builder?
|
Ideal scenario
The next guy keeps the legacy line going. Of course they have to pay the dues and do some MMPR figures. But they continue on from where Bandai left off. They fix the female figures. They showcase the Shogun megazord. it's just a smooth transition that results in better quality. What will likely happen Legacy line is simply dead once Bandai finishes the release. No Shogun Megazord either. |
How soon until we find out who the successor of the toy license will be? Can't start selling PR 2019 hype to kids and collectors without some toys to tie in.
|
I expect the Zord Builder line to be discontinued after this. Hasbro's megazord's will likely be the same mold as Bandai Japan's mecha (similar to how Matchbox/Mattel used the Bandai mold of Voltron in the 1980's). Also keep in mind companies have a big dick. They aren't going to just continue what the previous company was doing. But their ego won't be big enough to make their own molds when Bandai Japan has their own readily available. But the legacy line is on the ropes right now.

Wow.
I can only hope this is for the better. A lot of decisions over the past couple of years hadn't really been working out or making sense... And although every now and again something would sneak up that I'd have interest in (for example - if they even come out now to a wide degree, should I bother going for the Psycho Rangers when it's a guarantee nothing in that scale/style will be continued by Bandai's successor?), just never had enough faith in Bandai to continue or finish things to bite the bullet. Kinda even more glad now. |

Hasbro has connections to the fat food providers like Bugster King and WacDonalds. I'm kind of sad, but not. The attention to detail has been fluctuating for a while.

Wow did not expect that. I agree in that this can really only mean good things for the future. Probably.

For all the things Bandai has done wrong, the one thing they've been doing well since Super Megaforce is their basic 5 inch figures. That's not to say they're perfect, but they've kept a consistent style over the last 5 years, whereas in the past the each season's figures would look different than the last. Also Dino Charge brought back villains in a big way. I'm going to be most sorry about losing Bandai's 5 inch line, as I doubt another company will continue making figures in that scale. Can you PLEASE at least give me that damn Rita before you call it quits Bandai? That would at least allow me to have some form of closure with my 5 inch collection.

I think releasing ZB Shogun would be a pretty nice call.
One big figure fans are clamoring for (Far moreso than Serpentera or Tor), that BoA has kept locked away. How will Hasbro immediately one up the former PR team? By giving them the megazord they wanted. |
Holy crap, Bandai of America and Power Rangers had a divorce?
The morphers and role play toys were okay, but weren't fan of the 5 inch figures. |
What if it Bandai that was the reason for the Super Seasons? What if it was because they couldn't make as many toys as fans wanted in one year, so they had to make 2 years?
|
Ultimately I think this kind of shake-up will be good for consumers, though I'm definitely concerned about the future of the Legacy line (which I've invested into rather heavily).
That said, as long as the currently slated releases come out (and I'd have to assume they will, as opposed to Bandi throwing the entire stock into the sea out of spite) and make it to the UK then I personally will have pretty much everything I want out of it. Still keeping my fingers crossed for a Shogun Megazord, though. |
While I am not a fan of power rangers simply out of principle, I am pretty surprised at this. Perhaps we can stop getting the godawful americanized wastes of plastic they try to pass as megazords and instead just get the imported japanese versions?
That will probably happen at the same time they start faithfully adapting each season of super sentai to american audiences to the point of it being the same series, but with american actors. In other words, never. |

Well I guess that means a Mastodon, Pterodactyl and Triceratops Legacy Zord, blue, yellow and black flip head re-release and POSSIBLY a Shogun Megazord will be the final Bandai Legacy releases. Sucks we never got a complete set of Power Weapons, helmets, Tor or Serpentera. Maybe Hasbro will do better.
|
I'm not surprised after all the bad decisions Bandai made the past year. Honestly, who wanted the Ninja Steel Aux Zords to be exclusive to repainted Megazords or the Lion Fire Zord to be over sized and cost $100? Then there's the Legacy Gold Zeo Ranger...
