Uchu Sentai KyuRanger Episode 4- "The Dreaming Android!" Discussion
Raptor is distracted by dreams while the Jark Matter attack another planet. Can she pull together & help out the team?
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
Did the ship talk?!

I think we have a record for least YOSHAAAA LUCKY's ever. Also, Unlucky. NAISU.
|
Raptor was awesome.
Kinda love how most of this episode's "Yossha Lucky" are predictable, so not super annoying. There are only 4 of them, to boot. I really really like the puns on next episode's title though. Kyunin no Kyukyoku no Kyuseishu (Kyunin=9, Kyukyoku=Ultimate, Kyuseishu=Savior) |
I am loving this series so far.
Something about Raptor wanting to fight and sort of reach beyond her station is very endearing to me. Her wanting to be a member of the team feels very natural and I can only imagine would have felt like great payoff if this episode had happened a little later on in the series. Either way, I enjoyed this episode a ton. Raptor's such a fun character, she hasn't totally found her own voice yet and this is where someone like Lucky actually makes for a good member of the team. I'm hoping focus episodes going forward are more like this one. While it was clearly Raptor's episode, we were still able to explore Spada a little more. This one also did a lot for me as far as liking Lucky - him likening Spada's insistence to make Raptor head back to the Orion with the monster stealing dreams sort of clues you in on Lucky's personality. I think he sees certain things at a very shallow level, but the way he thinks is totally based on the idea that people should be free to chase their dreams. He would make for a fantastic main character if not for his overbearing qualities. Now I'm just waiting for full on Spada and Hammy focus episodes. I think those two have the potential to be my absolute favorites. But yeah, other than that, absolutely loving this show. I'm actively looking forward to Sentai week after week for the first time in years, that anticipation is a feeling I've sorely missed. It's promising that a series with a 9 member time doesn't actually have anyone I outright dislike. There's a weak link as far as character goes (Lucky) but, for the most part, I love the rest of the characters and think their odd mishmash of personalities exemplifies the idea of Sentai - different personalities coming together to get something done. |
I haven't watch this episode yet but HOLY SHIT TAKATORA'S ACTOR IN THE NEXT EPISODE?!
|
So wait, if I'm assuming this to be correct, they've arrived to Earth, and it has multiple Daikaan on it? Does this mean that we're going to be on Earth for the rest of the series?
DAMN IT TOEI YOU JUST HAD TO FIND A WAY TO ANCHOR THEM TO EARTH DIDN'T YOU |
Hopefully this one was good enough for everyone?
I mean, I'm not even sure what there'd be to complain about, this episode was really strong. Definitely the best one yet. That being said: - Oh man, I mean, Earth is a cool place and all, and it's great that you guys wanna save it, on account of I'm from there, but can you maybe... just kinda... not save it right now? Hopefully they'll at least make occasional trips elsewhere. It's not really a complaint with the episode itself but when they were like "Also this planet has a ton of MotW on it!" it sort of crushed my heart. - Also the Kyulette. On the upside, it means tighter focus for the stories, on the downside, much like the whole "they're a Space Sentai that hangs out on Earth" thing, this is exactly the sort of thing I was worried would happen before the series aired, especially once we found out there's five humans (i.e. proper actors) and four dudes in suits for the members. At least the suit guys are treated as equals, I guess. And presumably they'll all get together for all the bigger scenes. Like next week. I'm a lot less bummed about this than them staying on Earth, basically. On to the episode proper though, and it's all good. The focus on Raptor here was really strong, and Kyuranger is once again being very smart about its writing by both using Lucky very properly, showing his heroic side and having him only say よっしゃラッキー! a few times, AND topping it all off (does that count as a food pun?) by fleshing out Spada fairly nicely, all without taking the attention away from Raptor herself. Really well done stuff. As for next week, I'm slightly bummed they're not playing out Stinger's whole bit a little longer but I also kinda knew in the back of my head it wasn't going to last, so I'm not too bothered. EDIT: Oh, also I forgot to point out that Raptor did the narration for both last week's preview and the intro this week, further taking Lucky out of the spotlight. That was actually one of the coolest things about this episode to me. |
Dammit. Earth. I was terrified of this.
Oh boy, Earth holds tons of different things that are normally exclusive to one planet, as well as having some kind of secret. My favorite. Here's hoping they can depart from Earth by episode 10. *Sigh* Well, at least they're making it look like a shithole. I hope they keep the dreary look and feel to at least have something. Anyway. Episode was okay. I'm glad to see more of Raptor and Spada getting something. I feel the payoff would've been a lot greater if Raptor got her powers a little later. Turning her into the team's "6th" (I use that term extremely loosely) would've given her a bit more of an arc and would've been a lot more satisfying to both 1) Not see coming and 2) Give more breathing room for the others. Can't always win, though. For what it was, it was enjoyable. Spada really felt like a protective older brother here. Was that his character? It seems every episode someone has a new interpretation of what Spada's character is supposed to be, so I don't know. Whatever. I liked seeing Raptor's dreaming to help fight, and I also liked Spada being the sensible one in saying that wanting to fight and being able to actually fight aren't the same thing. Lucky however, disagrees. Time for my weekly bitchfest about Lucky! I really thought he came off as dumber than usual here. The parents of the children are choosing the lesser of two evils, and are called out by Lucky because they chose the option that would let their children live. Then Lucky brings Raptor into a combat zone without regard for ability to protect herself solely because of Raptor's dream to fight. Lucky would probably kick a kid out of a plane if he found out the kid's dream was to skydive... He wasn't throwing out Yuusha Lucky at every opportunity, but he was just kind of an inconsiderate asshole. Aside from that, the episode was okay. Sucks seeing Cancer is just an attack, but I kind of anticipated that. Seeing Raptor fight was also pretty cool, but I don't know if they can afford to have her pull off stuff like that again. Still, it was all cool. Raptor's little story in the episode was also rather nice, though I wish it was it had a little more time to it. Not a fan of Xiao. He had his moments, but he's also stepping the line from funny to annoying. |

A flawed episode, but still an entertaining one for the most part. Even Lucky seemed slightly less annoying this episode. Slightly. Now I have to go deal with this sudden curry craving. |
I am forming a very love/hate relationship with this show. For everything I like there's something I hate. For every time they do something good like toning down Lucky some this week and focusing on Raptor (the best character), they do something bad like moving the setting to Earth for an undetermined amount of time which could be the rest of the show.
If we could keep writing like this episode (or better) and get off Earth sooner rather than later, I think I'll be happy enough with this show. |
Alright, just watched it. And it's really, really good. Raptor is easily becoming one of the best characters of the show (Mao is lucky both her Sentai roles are fan favorites). I really like that Spada also gets a focus, and having lines that are not food related. As well having them testing out the other Kyutamas.
Regarding the Earth thing, we know that the budget is starting to hit, and it's a clever 4th wall breaking there, but I want them to explore Earth during the last arc or something. Here's hoping there's a turning point for the show where they are forced to leave Earth temporarily. Also the Kyulette. I know deep down they're not gonna have all 9 fighting together for the rest of the show. I hope they utilize it well. Like for an example Xiao deploys 5 of the team to be on the front, while the other 4 has to do a covert mission Young Justice style. Overall, really satisfied with this episode, this is how you handle Lucky. Hope the next episodes doesn't drop in quality. |
I want to know if they'll have the restraint to not have Lucky win every Kyulette and run the risk of not having a Red Ranger appear (In suit) for an episode or 2 or 3.
|
As long as you end up with some interesting combinations, the Kyulette... is a goofy way to do a perfectly fine thing.
This is definitely not one of those "This is for KIDS?" kind of shows, but hopefully it's still good within those parameters. |

This was okay. I enjoyed it simply because I like Raptor, but aside from that there wasn't really anything worthwhile in this episode. The subplot with the dream eating monster is not only old as hell but also done in a really boring way.
Like, "Raptor has this huge dream! What could it be?", Sparda steps forward "Oh it's probably her fanfics she draws all the time, she wants to fight with us". Wow, thanks Captain Exposition, what would we do without you. Also, Earth. Oh no. They won't... stay there the entirety of the show now, right? Please tell me they leave soon. And oh boy, of course Earth is special. Oh well I kinda feared Earth would be where the big bad Emperor is living or something. Anyways, as I said, boring episode with some good parts because Raptor. But wait: Is that fucking Yuki Kubota in the preview? Takatora nii-chan? Wonderful melon Rider Zangetsu? Yes please. If he's a recurring villain that alone might make the show worth watching from this point on. |

Who knows, maybe he does transform somewhere further down the road. Maybe just a one-off but I would love to see it happening anyways. |

It was also less of a subplot and more of a developing factor for Spada, which is why I loved the episode. Raptor was the main focus, but we get more of an insight into Spada being described as the parent of the team. He was, essentially, playing both the monster who stole dreams and the parents that were fine with that at the same time. This is the sort of approach this show needs to take going forward if it's going to have such a large cast. Find ways to make the monster's plan relevant to the focus of the episode but also find ways to get other characters involved. |
Was that Takatora in the preview? Is he making crazy belts to help people survive Jark Matter :D
|
Seriously, the Kyulette ? :( worst character segregation excuse ever. Always follow your dream, except when the Kyulette says to stay on the ship ! But it may not be so random as it looks...
The character focus was well done this time, but I'm disappointed the "space adventure" just last for 3 episodes (still better than Juspion !) |
Best episode up to this point in my opinion. They wrote around the fact that having all 9 rangers in one episode would be too many. It was dumb, but really who cares? I bought it in the context of the show. Raptor's story was very well handled; and I think now that the issue of too many cooks is out of the way, this could lead to a very interesting show. We could have a different combination of rangers every week, and as time went on we could see how certain characters play off of others. If done well, this could be a very interesting dynamic.
One more thing, Lucky seriously needs to dial it back a bit with the "YOSSHA LUCKY!" It is very annoying. |
ok, the Kulette...for budget reasons...I can accept this...
while I am sad they are stuck on Earth, this episode had what the others were missing: Proper pacing first of all. We actually got a bit of development on Raptor. And no LUCKY!!! every 5 minutes... I LOVED her ranger debut! The fact she is a gunster is pretty cool, and doing the snipe shot was pretty nice. Having the base become "the back up plan" and be the giant monster. It was that little bit that the last episode was missing... The Mecha...oh dear lord. I must be strong in not buying the toys. I love it, I love the limb change gimmick so bad...and the final attacks just get better and better. Is this show perfect? Nope, but this episode was just above the last by far! |

Well that didn't fucking take long. :( At least there's some potential in an Earth that's already been conquered where the Kyurangers are insurgent freedom fighters instead of defending against a long parade of ineffective invaders. With the entire world conquered and dozens of generals, that also means that the battle to free Earth should extend to a wide range of the same stock locations from Tokyo. Don't get me wrong; I actually thought this was the best episode to date. The characters are starting to gel and develop personalities. Raptor actually got all of the focus this week without Lucky upstaging her at any point. I also finally remember Spada's name - he's a dick. The peach can joke did manage to get a chuckle out of me, which is far more than I can say for the weird away team selection dance. I'm not thrilled with the premise shift, but I enjoyed this enough to stick around for at least a couple more weeks. |

There was actually another space show, Juspion, a Metal Hero, that did planet hopping for its first four episodes before settling on Earth for the rest of the show. It sorta works there, but I'm not super thrilled about it here. Earth being some hidden gem out in the middle of nowhere kinda bugs me - you have an entire universe you can use instead. I'd be fine if maybe the final arc was related to Earth, but I think it's way too early to ground them. Given how many generals are here, I can easily see the show on earth until at least the 30s when the team gets its final robot. I'm not super thrilled about that. I mean, yeah, Kyuranger is a great show right now and can easily continue to be, but I think it'll be something that's gonna bug me for years if we never head back to space. |
Holy shit do I love Raptor.
Really enjoyed this episode. Mostly because of best character Raptor, but other people had their moments. Switching focus to Earth is an unfortunate if predictable development. I'm not at all happy about it, but I won't let it detract from what I otherwise felt was a really strong episode. |

(But I'd rather have him on the team over Stinger.) |
I'm onboard. This episode sealed it. Maybe I'm easy to please.
That said, maybe I'm not feeling the design of Kyuren-Oh. Its probably my least favorite Sentai Mecha design recently. And Aquila Voyager as an arm kind of seems limited. Ah well, the mecha shows up less than 5 minutes an episode anyways. |

Oh no, not Earth...
I share the same trepidation a lot of you seem to about that. The exploration adventuring start of the series was too short. I do hope it returns to that at some points, but it was obvious we'd end up here for a long while eventually anyway. Washi Voyager still doesn't look that good as an arm on the suit IMO. At least Raptor finally has her powers though. She was fun this episode. |

But maybe they pull a ZyuohBird and we just get two orange Rangers. Or he’s movie exclusive or something. I personally think that Scorpio-tora might have been the original owner of the orange Kyu Globe or something, and maybe he transforms again once or twice later. |
Holy fourth wall breaking crap Batman.
Thoughts in a row: So you give us a very large team and then literally say you're going to break them up for budget reasons. And put all the bad guys on Earth. Seriously? Couldn't just appease us and call it E-R-tha or some weird name? I love the Rider crossovers. Or did no one else notice the giant Futo tower in the background? Or that everything was taken over by Gaim's Overlord fruit vines? Every time I hear Jark Matter, I keep thinking Jerk Matter. Now I want curry and rice. Raptors story line is cute, but so boilerplate it hurts. She's still my favorite pink Sentai character in a long time, just because she's got some moves. I do wish they gave her something other than a flying vulture. Lucky is the true Jerk Matter. I'm going to listen to the rest of the team tell me how Raptor shouldn't try to get hurt by putting her in harms way, but will basically tell you all to go to hell because it's not how I see life. Way to go sport. Go scream your catchphrase somewhere else. Even in the future, everyone in a major metropolis wears black as a primary color. Spada has a point. On his head. The buckles are awesome. |
A better episode but still has flaws and here are things I would change about this episode.
Earth: I would of been satisfied if they just say that when Jark Matter took over they renamed Earth into something like Zearth. Lucky: The one thing that did bug me about the episode was his lines and acting. Just when ever he talked or did anything, something just seemed off which bugged me. Also one thing I found funny was that one of the kids was named Takeru. Looks like he ran out of his infinite potential. |

Also, is Takatora's actor's thing just being the older brother to douches or soon-to-be-douches? Because this is going to be twice now.
