Kamen Rider Gotchard Episode 31- "Two People In The Dark, Trusting Each Other"
Rinne struggles with the new Malgam and some new feelings.
|
I wish the Mammoth Malgam could survive longer than the first 5 minutes of this episode. It's made of 4 homunculi, so it should be able to overpower both KR Gotchard and KR Majade for longer than 5 minutes and force them to retreat. I'd like to see a Malgam that can actually give the riders a hard time and serious injuries. But I guess Hasegawa wanted to focus more on Rinne's inner turmoil, not the physical aspect of fighting.
As usual, the food cart scene @ 06:10 is done at the famous ramp outside of Toei's studio (aka warehouse), haha. Lachesis confirms that homunculi like her and the other Sisters don't eat. Their source of energy is perhaps Glion's alchemical tricks, or perhaps another form of alchemical substance/elixir like I hypothesized here, since they could still function when Glion was absent in the last 10 years. I think they also don't age, as shown in episode 18 where their look in the past was identical to today's. Could it be that The Sisters are immortal beings? Now it makes more sense why Glion's derisively called them dolls. He's called them dolls because they are dolls with alchemical batteries/source of energy. I thought that The Sisters and the other homunculi were artificial humans, in the sense that they function like normal humans, only created through Glion's alchemical skills, but I think I was wrong. I think The Sisters and the other homunculi are automatons, similar to Koyomi (or rather, the Koyomi-shaped magic-powered doll) in KR Wizard. Atropos seeing (or imagining) Kraken Malgam as Glion @ 06:52 makes me hypothesize that the homunculi (and The Sisters) could be Glion's horcruxes. He could've linked, copied, or separated some of his soul into the homunculi he's created. It could be interesting if one of The Sisters or homunculi be taken over by Glion's persona from inside their body without them realizing it. Atropos is the most viable candidate. "I'm not sure what you were reading, Tom, but this is very dark stuff. Very dark, indeed." (Prof. Horace Slughorn) Kyouka asks Lachesis about the identity of the three-eyed uber-demon dwelling behind the Ouroboros gate in episode 27, but she also doesn't know. She only speculates that it might be the king of darkness, which I'm 90% sure is the same uber-demon that was defeated by the Alchemist of Dawn 120 years ago. The three-eyed uber-demon might be Chemy #101, #102, or rather, Chemy #0, who is the source of all alchemical force in the universe. The uber-demon is the most basic, raw form of alchemical force that has existed since the beginning of time, or even outside time, as Glion cryptically stated in episode 27. Unlike normal Chemies, the uber-demon has no connection whatsoever to this world, hence why it will cause the destruction of this world if it manages to fully appear in this world. It might even be indestructible. It's destruction. Can destruction be destroyed? Seina got sick after being frozen by Mammoth Malgam. Well, she was turned into an ice statue, of course she fell sick, haha. This is one of the few rare instances where a MOTW attack causes a disruption in the victim's health, even after being reversed by the protagonists. So, naturally Rinne got the role of Juliet. Seina is initially upset when she learns about it, but then apologizes to Rinne for her jealousy. So, the writer chose to play it safe. If this is a Toshiki Inoue's script, then this love triangle will be turned up to 11, last for at least 10 episodes, and intertwined with other dramatic interpersonal conflicts, haha. Soooo... All's well that ends well. By the way, All's Well That Ends Well is also a play written by Shakespeare, haha. Kraken Malgam's ink nicely causes an illusion inside the mind of its victims, similar to how an octopus' uses its ink to disorient the predator and or its prey. It's also nice how The Sun's power is ineffective against Kraken Malgam's illusion tricks due to it being a mental/psychological illusion, not physical one. Rinne uses Neminemoon's power to "eclipse" The Sun's power, basically allowing her to enter a state of suspended animation to fake her death and fool Kraken Malgam. Kinda convoluted, though, and it's explained through infodump, haha. Rinne apparently killing herself kinda parallels the story of Romeo and Juliet. And like Mammoth Malgam, Kraken Malgam is formed from multiple copies of homunculi (about 12 of them), so Atropos is starting to up her golden Malgam creation game. Kraken Malgam's defeat is due to his amateurish disinformation tactic. He should've not consistently used illusion all the time, and should've randomly alternated between illusion and reality. If you consistently appear strong when you're weak and appear weak when you're strong all the time, then your enemies will read the pattern and know your true intentions. Your enemies will know your tactic beforehand, and thus ultimately defeats the purpose of disinformation in the first place. The most effective form of disinformation is when it's combined with randomness. If Kraken Malgam randomly activated and deactivated his illusion tricks, Houtarou and Rinne would've had a much harder time telling the difference between illusion and reality. Although, this tactic might still be ineffective against Rinne's new suspended animation tactic, haha. But, come on, Zolda. He's just a bunch of dolls. What does he know about Sun Tzu's Art of War? Haha. It's nice to see the X-Gotchalibur (the most multifunctional and the best looking toy in this show so far) is still used in this episode. Bandai should do more multifunctional approach like this or Gashacon Bugvisor on the future DX toy designs. The forgotten one after Kraken Malgam's defeat is Spanner. He's nowhere to be seen. Is he kidnapped by Kraken Malgam after losing to his illusion tricks? Or is it just writing/directorial error? Haha. Thankfully, he's back to AA common room fixing his Valvarusher, so he's not kidnapped by Kraken Malgam, haha. He then continues his favorite hobby: Exchanging insults with Lachesis. My girlfriend ships Spanner and Lachesis, haha. I think their dynamics is similar to Houjou & Ozawa from KR Agito, or Takumi & Mari from KR Faiz. Lachesis getting her own Valvarusher may also mean that she (and several other people like Sabimaru and Renge) will ultimately be given mass-produced Drivers and transform into AU's Riotrooper-esque infantry based on Valvarad. Kinda fitting, as the name Valvarad is likely an amalgamation of valve(?) and apparat (German word for tool/device/apparatus)(?) or apparat (Russian word for the workers of an administration/bureaucracy)(?). Who and what the frak descends from the Ouroboros gate @ 22:46? Is it Glion who's somehow alive and returns with a small portion of the uber-demon's powers? Or is it just the king of darkness who will debut in the next episode? This could be the next big reveal. The writers better not screw it up because this reveal may be close to KR Legend debut in the main storyline. If the writers are not careful, the presence of KR Legend could potentially mess up the internal logic of the main storyline and creates a more convoluted story. Next week: I wonder what kind of life The Sisters are going to live without Glion's influence. This episode perhaps will focus on Clotho's inner struggle. The king of darkness finally appears. This is probably the one Lachesis was referring to. Is he indeed the same uber-demon that was defeated by the Alchemist of Dawn 120 years ago? Or perhaps he's not the uber-demon, but the ruler of the Ouroboros world. Anyway, the king of darkness doesn't look menacing to me. He just looks like an upgraded golden Malgam. |
These last four episodes sure were a giant waste of time. Just random slice-of-life stuff that wasn't even particularly well done.
At least the story seems to ramp up again next week. |

So Henshinzero was right about the rumor of Lachesis getting a Valvarusher. It's the same as Spanner's, so she can't Ironize with the Plant Chemies she once used as a Malgam. That means her options are Vehicle, Occult or their corresponding Repli variants. Quote:
Glad to see the Riders' respective rivalries with the Dark Sisters making consistent pace. Rinne and Atropos got more focus in this arc, Spanner and Lachesis is being set up and next episode will finally focus on Houtarou and Clotho! Feels like it's been a while since they seriously interacted. The X-Rex arc, I think? |

https://i.imgur.com/D9SiuqZ.jpg The name is Nijigon (niji + dragon), but haven't we had a dragon Chemy (Dragonalos)? Nijigon has been rumored to grant Gotchard's final form. I wish Gotchard's final form will still partner with the ultimate forms of Steamliner and Hopper1, or at least Hopper1. It makes more sense if Gotchard's final form is granted by Hopper1, not a brand new Chemy, since Hopper1 has been established as Houtarou's Gotcha and BFF. What's the fitting name? MugenHopper? Haha. Several friends of mine hypothesized that Nijigon is the light side counterpart of the uber-demon. But if so then Nijigon should have a raw, beastly form similar to the uber-demon, not a toyetic one. Or perhaps it does have a beastly form, but later managed to be tamed by Houtarou and turned into the toyetic form and given a pair of goggles? My hypothesis is that Nijigon could be the Chemy created by Houtarou's dad (which could be the Alchemist of Dawn) from the positive force of creation as a countermeasure against the uber-demon's destructive powers. Another possibility is that Nijigon is Houtarou's dad/the Alchemist of Dawn who fused himself with the raw, beastly form of the force of creation and turned into a Chemy, which may explain why it has goggles. It may also explain why Houtarou's dad is never home. Is Hermes the name of the uber-demon? Where do you get it from? The Hermes I know is a brand of uber-luxurious women handbags, haha. I much prefer if Houtarou is somehow possessed, overwhelmed, or infected by the uber-demon's powers before healed by Nijigon. |

I watched the last two episodes and they are simply amazing. What happens in the episode very well refers to “Romeo and Juliet” without slipping into direct copying. Also, I think this episode will be really helpful to the show's target audience, if not in a romantic way, then in a friendship way. For when more than two are friends, that is where jealousy will appear. I also liked the cute moments, like the encouragement from Minato, Spanner not being able to hit even a copy of Kyoko, and Kajiki remembering Hiyori. The guest actors were also used much more successfully than in the hot spring story.
I know a lot of people are clamoring for a new form for Rinne (which she'll probably get), but in my opinion, using existing powers in an clever way is much cooler than gaining new ones. A lunar eclipse is a great (and timely) idea. With Lachesis we seem to be entering Birth and Birth Proto Type territory. I have nothing against it, although Spanner is right that Lachesis’s loyalty is highly questionable. The appearance of the Abyssal King does not particularly please me, because it is entering the same territory as Ark and Giff. On the plus side, he does seem menacing, but how creepy will he be when the huge CGI monster is replaced by a bulky suit? Don't know. In the next episode: Hotaro and Clotho's team-up. It's great that they remembered their confrontation. The two are a perfect match: Clotho fights to the limit, with a fatalistic motto of "win or die," while Gotchard regularly pushes his limits, making the impossible a reality. |

Another possibility that I forgot to mention is that Nijigon/Chemy #101 could be a (re)fusion of all 100 Chemies. This logic works similar to KR Agito, where the duality of the Overlord of Light and the Overlord of Darkness shows that they're basically two different sides of the same entity. If the uber-demon/Chemy #0 represents the force of destruction, then the original form of Nijigon/Chemy #101 represents the force of creation. Chemy #0 and #101 are basically the manifestation of the dual nature of power as the force of destruction and creation. Like the Overlord of Light who spread its power inside humans at the beginning of the universe and later manifests as the Agitos, the light/positive side of Chemy #0 was divided into the several primordial Chemies like Dragonalos and Gaiard (and probably also several other Cosmic and Fantastic Chemies) during the creation of this world, and then later about 120 years ago the majority of the remaining Chemies were born in a brief period of time, probably by the help of the Alchemist of Dawn who pioneered new techniques and advanced the progression of the alchemy world. So, basically Chemy #101 is the original form of the fusion of Chemies #1-#100. Quote:
Like stated by Mesnick above, Hermes Trismegistus is the mythical father of alchemy who is a syncretic, mythical figure based on Greek and Epyptian deities. So, the article might imply that the ubiquitous use of triangles/arrows (a symbol which was commonly associated with Hermes Trismegistus) means that the use of alchemy is basically tapping into a very tiny portion of the uber-demon's powers (and or its positive counterpart's powers like I mentioned in my hypothesis in the previous comment above). The uber-demon's name may be revealed later as Hermes, Hermes Trismegistus, or something else, but as for now, the producers and writers of this show have never officially revealed it. Hermes Trismegistus could've even been the name/title of the Alchemy of Dawn as the founder/original member of the Alchemys Union, as the triangle/arrow motif is omnipresent in the AU's logos, symbols, etc, including Houtarou's and the other Riders' transformation pose, barring KR Dread. The only sources that mention the uber-demon's name as Hermes or Hermes Trismegistus are a page on TV Trope and several other articles/Reddit threads/tweets by fans/fansites. It was probably started by a hypothesis made by someone on Twitter, Reddit, or other forums, and several other people picked it up and posted it on TV Trope, which inspired another batch of people to repeat the same hypothesis and report it as theory/fact. So, I conclude that it's very likely a positive feedback loop of misinformation. It's a common occurrence in this age of social media. Several other people hypothesized that the uber-demon's name was El Dorado as muttered by Glion at the end of episode 27, although it could've been a reference to his twisted obsession of creating a golden world, basically making the El Dorado myth come true. |
Also, I think that since Gotchard as a show really loves the number three, we have three Chemies Dragons for a reason. I think we'll see three dragon riders at some point in this show.

There were 101 RCC's with Fuga in the second scene of episode 1, but several of them were partially obscured, including #101, probably because the artworks weren't finished, haha. Like what I posted here, Nijigon has at least 3 cards, 2 of which very likely exist simultaneously, so the RCC #101 that appeared in that scene could've been Nijigon's egg/default card. Anyway, I'm worried about the direction of this story when I realized that the mooks appearing in the preview for the next episode were the Kasshines aka the Hundred's mooks from KR Legend spin-off, so the next episode could be the start of the new arc that features KR Legend who could also debut in the same episode or episode 33. This king of darkness guy Gigist may be a villain from KR Legend's world who crossed over to Houtarou's world to mess up the storyline, haha. Quote:

https://i.imgur.com/b4o10XD.jpg Kamen Rider Geats should be rightly called Kamen Rider Gotcha for constantly barraging viewers with lazy, cheap, shallow "Gotcha!" moments in virtually every single episode. Another story screwed up by an out-of-nowhere memory manipulation powers to create a lazy, cheap, shallow "Gotcha!" moment is The High School Heroes (2021), where the story went FUBAR in the last 2 episodes, especially in the last one. It's no wonder because those episodes were written by *drum roll* *drum roll* *drum roll* *wait for it* the great, mighty God of asspull: Yuuya Takahashi. This is why stories that abuse the memory loss or memory manipulation trope make me cringe, especially the memory manipulation one. That trope is often used as the easiest, the most convenient tools to create lazy, cheap, shallow plot twists and an infinite number of asspulls. Two other tropes often used as asspull and shock factor generators are reality manipulation trope and multiverse trope. These 3 tropes are often abused by hack writers to create a false image of excitement and narrative grandeur. At this point I'm 95% sure that if a story features a memory or reality manipulation trope, then it will throw at least one lazy, cheap, shallow plot twist at me, like in Gotchard's story where it was revealed that Glion was the one who manipulated the AU's top brasses' memories, or like in (God forbid) Geats. Sigh... So, this is the so-called "modern writing". |
Speaking of this episode, TTFC released a special, which is a recording of the play "Romeo and Juliet" also in the mockumentary style. Considering this, We are Class 3G, Kamen Rider Legend and Hyper Body Swap Battle, Gotchard can safely be called the craziest show in terms of its specials. There was something slightly similar in Zi-O, but even there there was no such variety and flight of fancy.
