Some of it - boy, I really don't want to get out over my skis on this, having watched one single episode so far - is that Decade is doing a lot to to democratize the idea of storytelling. Like, that whole thing about The Story Of Wataru... Wataru doesn't belong to Toei anymore. He doesn't belong to the actor, he doesn't belong to Inoue, he doesn't belong to Tiberius Toei, the CEO of Toei (did not check the wiki, feels correct). Once a story gets out into the world, we all get a say in it. Stories become bigger than individual contributors once they take root in our hearts, if I can bungle a metaphor. So a series opting, for logistical reasons or otherwise, to just try and talk about what it felt like to watch these shows? To echo and reflect Kuuga (for example), rather than continue or laud Kuuga? I think that's a thematically-relevant way to approach paying homage. Quote:

I am going to be unbelievably pissed when it's just Sakurai. |

Well, here I am again to bring up my regular thing:
I don’t have a set one. Instead, I’m simply recreating what I did on the previous watch threads. Kuuga: Not regularly commenting and making one general opinion post near the end. Kiva: A profile on the featured Fangire/sharing a video for an insert song. Ryuki: Discussing my fervent opinions. Blade: A profile on the featured Undead/a discussion of a featured meme. Faiz: Vaguely hinting at future events. Agito: random production trivia. Den-O: One part sharing the VA’ for the Imagin’s previous and later credits for part 1, then a discussion of the storyline for part 2. Kabuto: Pointing out similarities between a featured Rider and one from a previous season. Hibiki: etymology for the Oni’s name/ song lyrics foreshadowing the next episode through vague similarities. And then I’ll see where the wind takes me. As for the first episode, I did like the fact that we have an experienced hero* who’s lost his memories and is essentially a rookie. Especially with him losing all his powers and having to regain them (one thing I didn’t like about this show’s rough Sentai equivalent Gokaiger was that they just give them most of the past hero powers from the get go, with the only missing ones being ones they’ll never use anyway). And the massive destruction of the world does seem like the sort of precursor to a multiversal threat. *citation needed |
I know that you're saying that this thread's going to be different. But I didn't expect it to be so different, though I've seen similar type of KR discussion which is done in dialogues like this, like the Reaction Posts/Commentary section (but is significantly more minor, it wasn't what I was promoting) in my link at signature. It'll be likely more random for me to choose what to respond here, there'd be no way I'm responding to every single one here.

I like seeing riders with a lot more confidence and style. Haruto should probably be up there with them. |
I'll back up Journey Through the Decade for being a great opening. It's very different in how melancholy and moody it is, and it fits Tsukasa's more offbeat character.
But yeah, Decade's intro wastes no time throwing you right into the thick of it, and not explaining any of it. Certainly looks cool, though! (And, of course, Gokaiger pulled the same trick in its first episode, but I'll let the net movies argue over how one stole from the other). |
2009 was the year where Super Sentai gave us the Kobayashi-penned Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, a band of millenial samurais that fought the demons of the netherworld using kanji. Meanwhile, Kamen Rider gave us this funky new rider. From the suit to the color scheme and the setup of episode 1 this was such a wild card I did not know what to expect and was awestruck that the 10th Heisei rider was one that could transform into previous riders. Keep in mind, this was pre-Gokaiger times and that gimmick alone was some next level stuff.

Firstly, thanks Zatyme for going first and showing everybody what to expect for the episode watch section of the discussion!
And thanks Die for sparing so much time to host this big project! It must be a lot of work and preparation for something like this. Quote:
I'll be sure to talk about my worst case of recognition failure later, although that was partially due to what I consider a problem with the show's execution, not just my lack of experience. Takeru's and Shinnosuke's sudden friendship in HeiGen was strange though, considering how their only previous canon interaction was in Drive's final arc, where Ghost appeared exclusively in-suit. But in that movie, Takeru and Shinnosuke are best buds for some reason. I can't blame you for mistaking them for being from the same show. Quote:
And that's how you know it's Aruto! Quote:

Decade's intro is sort of that, with Decade being some apocalyptic figure, but it's really more about characters you already have an investment in getting slaughtered. It's not really about the mystery, it's about the stakes: this is an event bigger than all nine series put together. Quote:

Love Decade. Love love love Decade! A beautiful love letter to the Heisei Era of Kamen Rider at that point and everything it tried to do while also serving as a commentary on the nature of its storytelling. Oh, and it's just fucking fun to boot! I hope you enjoy this one :)
