Overall, the Ryuki arc was pretty good. Definitely one of the better ones. I'd have preferred it if Shinji had a bigger role in it, like Takeru in the last tribute arc, or if we went back to 02 at all, besides the brief Episode Final flashback, but besides that, really good. Loved the use of the original Mirror World effects, and the justification for bringing Ryuga back. Loved where they left Shinji's character too. Very excited for Inoue's spinoff next month!

This is the first episode that made me excited about this series.

Good arc for Ryuki.
But the only thing I have in mind is about Toku alumni Tsuda Kanji (Okubo-san). Between Ryuki and his role in Garo : yami o terasu mono (10 years apart), I didn't find him looking much older (a bit of course, it's 10 years) But now between Garo and this ZI-O arc (6 years). Daaaamn. Time sure can be a bitch to your general appearance. I hope he is not sick or something cause i find him (and especially his hollow face) REALLY aged |
So are we just going to skip the Ryuki Ride Watch? Are we not doing those anymore?

Eh, I'm still waiting for the Ryuki special to be sure about the explanation they're going with regarding him. Ryuki could be erased by the Another Ryuga Watch just like how Banjo was erased by the Another Build Watch and the same happened to other secondary Riders from other seasons.
I really hope whatever explanation they use for Ryuki recovering his powers in the special isn't about him recovering his powers in the present, it should happen a few years ago in order to be able to fit his crossover appearances. It'd be especially silly too since Ryuki had just made an appearnace with a voiced cameo in Heisei Generations Forever (which was even referenced in this arc with Sogo already knowing about Ryuki, just not knowing that it was Shinji). Talk about an absolutely phenomenal episode. The whole concept of accepting your bad side is a potentially very simple and basic one, especially for a kid's show; but they don't pull their punches with it and go in just hard enough. That scene where Sougo's alone with his mirror self taunting him in the clock shop was really something. Does Ryuki go in this hard? I got the feeling that this 2-parter's callback may primarily be in tone, and if so that makes me very excited to watch Ryuki.
Absolutely loved the overall message, too. I could have done with being told something to this effect back in my super nihilistic days; that just because there are base negative elements it doesn't negate all the positive stuff. I always find optimism is best when it doesn't ignore the clear problems people actually have; telling someone "it's all good actually" isn't necessarily very helpful when said someone may know very well that they have had dark thoughts and that they don't fully consider themselves a great person. This is a very difficult topic to handle, most especially for a kid's show; but I think they pulled it off pretty damn well. Zi-O's slowly been getting better, but I never for a moment thought during the Fourze/Faiz 2-parter that this show would produce one of my single favourite episodes of the entire franchise. Absolutely fantastic. ... well. Except for the fact that this new form pretty much kills the Heisaber. I LOVED that thing! |
