Do you feel embarrassed for watching Kamen Rider & Sentai/Power Rangers as an adult?
So like most people I got into toku heroes like Power Rangers when I was young, watch it throughout my teen years and into my early 20's. I still watch these shows right now at the age of 25. Do you feel bad or embarrassed that you like shows that's aimed predominantly at middle school children in Japan? Sometimes I feel worry about talking about these shows around other people to avoid them from laughing at me or finding it strange.
In High School, people found out that I was still watching Power Rangers and other shows on Cartoon Network, Disney, Nick and ABC Family that they laugh at me. People would go up to me and be like "You are a total loser for liking kiddie shows" and "You won't be getting laid if they see your Power Rangers & Transformers collection". Everyone else in High School was into Sports, Call of Duty, InfoWars, The Hills, Gears of War, Tosh.0 and Jersey Shore meanwhile I didn't care for those stuff. |
"Sports, Call of Duty, InfoWars, The Hills,"
One of these things is not like the other, one of these things definitely does not belong... But yeah, nah, I totally get you. It's something I've been able to just shrug off over a gradual process; as long as you're self-aware there's really not too much of a problem. It certainly depends on the people you surround yourself with, though. If your friends would raise an eyebrow at your first mentioning you like these things then that's one thing, but it would be another if they were openly mocking you. You're fine to enjoy whatever you want and people you like to associate with shouldn't be shaming you for that. |
No. And let’s be real, no one in today’s world where Marvel movies are the hottest stuff and cartoons are considered "cool" can seriously give you shit for liking Toku. They may try, but they can’t.
In my opinion, watching Toku and collecting figures is one of the healthiest hobbies around. As long as you don’t go overboard but that’s true with every hobby. If you’re afraid of being judged, sell it better: You’re watching Japanese Iron Man / Spider-Man. It’s kinda goofy at times but the special effects are cool. Done. Deliver it with a straight face, be firm and funny about it, and no one who isn’t already trying to hate you will. And you’re better off without those people in your life anyways. It may be my naïve view on the world but I never had any problem with people hating on what I like to do in my free time. |

Star Wars "Clone Wars" is getting a revival, and I highly doubt that a bunch of clamoring children were the ONLY reason for that one! Marvel is big-money, A-list Actors!!! Transformers also has something on that, but to a lesser extent because the Bay-verse is the BAY-VERSE!!! The massive selection of comics and their characters and stories have made them fashionable! A guy I know would take "SAGA" to work and his co-workers would read them and then start asking questions, until my friend started feeling like a drug dealer because they would want to know more or when a new copy was out! P.R. has a also gotten slightly more HUMAN, more REAL, and slightly more DARK with their comics! Boom! has effectively made the property more of a draw than was believed possible a mere ten years ago! My college campus was advertising Pokemon Go! when it first came out! The old "rules" don't matter as much, and even if they do, "Who cares?" May seem childish, to you on some level and to others on a greater level, but don't let it get to you! If they think you will not have a meaningful relationship BECAUSE of that, don't let that get to you either! I don't have anyone in my life as of yet, but if I do, I hope that someone will be receptive to such likes; an equal "nerd"! |
I don't and neither should you. I'm not afraid to show off the hobbies and interest that I enjoy. As long if you don't shove it into other people faces or being a total jackass about it, you should be good to go.
Watching & liking A kids' show, movie, video game, book, etc as an adult is perfectly fine. While I'm not into kids stuff like some people here, but I do have a fair share of stuff aim to kids and teens that I enjoy (I won't be on this site if I didn't). I think the reason most adults today give people flack about people liking Power Rangers as an adult is because people are raised to give up on childish things at a certain age if you want society to accept you. Most causal adults watch stuff like The Walking Dead, CSI, Law & Order, Game of Thrones, West World, Empire, etc because they feel like it is less geeky and childish to them compare to something like Power Rangers. I feel like an adult liking children stuff would be a problem if they only watch and like children stuff and nothing else. That would not be a very healthy thing to do and you should have other adult hobbies & interest as well. I will say the same thing if someone who is a total edgelord that only likes edgy shit and nothing else. As long if you like Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Power Rangers in a good moderation and are balancing your viewing & habits out with a variety of stuff other than Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, it's totally fine. If you have adult responsibilities and interest than no one should care because you are paying your bills, taxes and other stuff that you keep yourself alive in this current world. |
Two words: Hell. No.

I can understand what Genocyber went through. I had some people in Elementary school that thought I was strange for liking stuff like Godzilla and anime. People made fun of rubber suits and I'm like "Most American movie monsters are guys in rubber suits too". In 1998, it was worse when you had kids that told me on how much cooler that the American Godzilla was compare to the Japanese Godzilla.
With anime, people thought these cartoons are so strange and unusual compare to what they watched. I remember I brought Key the Metal Idol to school for show & tell back in the 1st grade before my teacher turn it off. I even try to explain how cool Vampire Hunter D, Akira and Casshan Robot Hunter was at the time too and no one cared (This was back in 1997). You are always going to have people that will judge you and you should not push them to like your hobbies. |
When it comes to toku I'm kind of reserved on the subject, as no one I know irl watches it and I end up being the only one, staying up on a Saturday night to watch the latest Kamen Rider and Super Sentai episodes live.
I've been trying to convince my brother who is a massive weeb to watch Kamen Rider Gaim (on the basis that he's seen Madoka and liked it so I thought he might like more Urobochi stuff) but he's the type of guy who is more willing to do his own thing regardless of what anyone else says so no luck there. None of my closest friends could care less about it and I don't even mention it to people who have no idea what it is. Kind of why I ended up on these forums to be honest, to have someone to talk to about this stuff. I don't really feel bad for watching the shows though. As long as the storyling is engaging (like Gaim or Build) then I am all for watching some action and am old enough to recognise the true intentions behind the shows. I also found myself preferring Rider for that very reason, because at it's best, it is worthwhile watching regardless of the fact that they are trying to sell you at least 20-30 toys a year per season and if you don't live in Japan you have to pay extra for shipping making it cost way more that it's worth to get a piece of plastic you'll probably end up leaving on a shelf as a display. |
I like sci fi and fantasy stuff and that's all.
|
Never. I display my Toku shit right beside my ponies and Transformers.
You shouldn't let others disparage you from enjoying what you like. I remember during my time in middle school, everyone was talking about how cheesy Power Rangers was, and during the entire conversation, the only thing going through my mind was the Ninja Storm theme :lol I can understand how it feels to be ostracized for liking something "Immature" and such, but at the end of the day, it's your hobby. It's not your job to fit in with whatever groups, especially when they're not even your friends. |
Fun fact: Sentai is aimed at preschoolers, not middle school kids.
One of my favorite anecdotes from a friend of mine who worked as a teacher in Japan was that by the time a kid was in the 4th grade, they were too old for "kiddy stuff" like Sentai and Kamen Rider and were watching shows like One Piece and Pokemon. So like what you like, especially as an adult, life's too short to let people make you feel like crap for something you take genuine enjoyment in. If your friends are in nerd fandom, don't let them give you shit, you're all nerds. Hell, even if they're not, real friends probably wouldn't give you shit for what you like. |
Frankly yes 😂 I know there is no need to be embarrassed but still.. 😂
|
Nope.
|
If being an adult means losing that sense of justice, duty, responsibility and sacrifice. Then I don't ever want to be an adult.
|
I don't see a reason why I should, because most people may give you a weird look after initially tell them but then they'll just go back to immediately not giving a crap.
|
Yes, but I grew up with when I was young and I watch quite a bit of tv, but found of shows to watch and I didn't find anything on netflix or amazon prime worth watching then I found Amazons and got hooked on toku especially Kamen Rider again which one of my favorites growing up. Everyone in Hawaii watched toku in the 70s and 80s so that's my excuse.
When you're old like me you want to relive a little bit of your youth every so often and some of the stories are just dark enough for an adult. Sometimes I'm surprised that this is a kids show at times. Would I like it to be serious more often? Sometimes I do think that would be better as I like Amazons, but a little fun in between like Build is great. This is no different from adults liking anime or rick and morty or some other cartoon. Just as long as you're a well adjusted adult, I see no problem with it. It is after all a super hero show and no one says anything about any Marvel or DC movies being bad to watch as an adult. |
^I think stuff like Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Star Trek are so mainstream where no one looks at them as "Only for kids" and geeky anymore. Geek/Nerd culture is mostly stuff that people like that are niche and unusual that most people are not into.
I can see why people would be shy to talk about talking about Toku superhero shows to other people because they are not very well know and people will look at them as childish because they have lower budgets compare to superhero shows on the CW & Netflix and these shows are made to promote toys. While the MCU movies are also made to sell merchandise to kids too, they are nowhere as toy driven as the current Rider and Sentai shows. So people will take a movie like The Avengers more seriously than something like Drive. |
I used to in high school and early on in college, but I came to the realization that most people didn't really care and the few people who did weren't worth listening to.
|
Nope.
Hell, I didn't even really get into toku (outside of Godzilla) until a few years ago when I was already 19 years old and you know, I still watch cartoons, collect action figures (both bog-standard stuff you can get at US retail and imported collector stuff from Japan), so why would I be embarrassed by being into one more thing aimed at kids? |
No, because I’m an adult and I can enjoy whatever I like.
|
Nope. While I'm somewhat reserved about it, if people catch me watching it or notice my computer background with all the Heisei Riders, I proudly explain what it is to them if they ask. My group of friends at first found it odd of me to be watching it, and they still do sometimes poke fun at me for it, but after seeing some clips (thankfully they caught me during watching Gaim), they found some moments to raise an eyebrow at, and have shown respect for it.
Besides, why should I be ashamed of having good tastes in a Series of shows that have good morals, complex storylines & actually make me THINK? Instead of stupid braindead drama shows & reality star stupidity? |
Things are different now, mostly adults start to like kids stuff than before.
|
There's akibaranger geek stereotype and tbbt. Also, marvel become so cool that even People thar ridicules superheroes want to get the paid from it. I mean 3 Spider-Man in 10 years is really cash grabbing, but he's the best selling toy figure.
|
Nope. Not one bit.
|
I do like how Japan is not scared to tell more darker and serious themes to their kids shows compare to America. Batman: TAS, Steven Universe and a couple other shows are the only American cartoons that reach the same level of storytelling and content as Japanese kids stuff for the most part.
|
agreed Batman the Animated Series was really good. I watched it in high school and really enjoyed it.
I think that's where Harley Quinn came from, too. |
Embarrassed?
Heck, no! |
What I feel like what makes something like Kamen Rider stand out from most kids stuff is the aesthetics of rubber suits and the fight cinematography. Seeing rubber suits and miniatures really make these shows feel authentic in my opinion. Not to mention, Kamen Rider always deals with some type of losing your humanity and evil vs. evil.
Quote:
Back in the day, you had shows and manga aim for kids in Japan that would never work in America for kids like Fist of the North, Devilman, Area 88, Barefoot Gen, and even Toku like the Metal Heroes and Kamen Rider Black. Japan's standers have changed over the years and American cartoons have gotten better with content (That's not saying a whole lot compared to most Western kids shows). So current anime and Toku shows aim for kids don't feel a whole lot different than most American cartoons now except for a few in my opinion. |
Kind of? I like what I like, but I get weird reactions sometimes and I'm like "I promise you I'm normal lol." Usually once I explain why I like it, people are like "oh, I can see that then" and move on.

Kamen Rider can pretty dark at times too. Both are even from Toei and are on Sunday mornings. It would be like if a kid in America said that they are too old for Power Rangers, but are okay with watching Ben 10. When those two are not much different with their content.
|
yeah one piece is still for children even if it is dark. i mostly brought that up to say that saying pokemon is dark is laughable

I definitely don't because anyone who makes fun of me suddenly finds tokusatsu to be a highly respectable form of media when they get a computer virus or lock themselves out of something. It helps to be the computer geek as well as the toku nerd.
I also tend to just not care what others think and advise anyone experiencing toku related discrimination to simply remind the offending party that they are nerds in their own way |
I'm too old to care what people think about my Hobby. If they don't like it,there is a very hot and fiery volcano I can direct them to jump in naked....WHY would anyone care what others think of their FUN???
