Happy 20th Anniversary Power Rangers Turbo!
2 Attachment(s)
Twenty years ago today the first episode of Power Rangers Turbo aired in the U.S (the film was released less than a month prior on 3/28). While it is absolutely a divisive series, what are your memories of it?
I remember watching bits and pieces when it originally aired, but at the time my focus was shifting over to Beast Wars. Having recently binged most of the series on Netflix, I'm not quite sure why it gets as much hate as it does. Anyways, here's an old pamphlet scan for Spring 1997! Fun fact: If you were to have purchased everything on this page NEW in 1997 it would have cost you roughly $264 (+ tax) or roughly $400 (+ tax) today. Good luck trying to get any of these items at original cost today on the secondary market. http://www.tokunation.com/attachment...1&d=1492644864 |
I love Turbo.
I watched it as it aired and I enjoyed myself. As I grew and become deeper into the fandom, I used to be part of the crowd that hated it for not being Zeo or In Space, but after rewatching it, I didn't quite understand the hate. It was fun and enjoyable with one of the most tense endings ever. I love this show. One of the best red rangers, Justin is a decent actor, and just a likable bunch all around. |
More a case of just being sandwitched between two better series than anything actively wrong with Turbo itself, is your opinion, correct?

I grew up with the Zordon Era of Rangers. THis was a delightful show and the season that wwe saw the team Graduate from HS. Except for Justin that is. He was still too young. :lol

Actually, I found Turbo more enjoyable than Zeo.
There isn't anything actively wrong with either series, but Zeo was kind of the point where the cast had staled for me. Yeah, Tayna was new, but no one was really that interesting. Turbo brought a cast change (About 15-20 episodes in), the departure of Zordon, a new mystery ranger (Who's so mysterious it's 20 years later and we still don't know who he is), a robot teammate, and a mentor that actively made the rangers figure out their own problems. I loved Turbo. It was like reading X-Men for 6 years, then picking up a copy of Teen Titans. It may not be your thing, and it may repeat some tropes, but it was a breath of fresh air if you were getting kind of bored. Honestly, the only negatives I can agree with concerning Turbo are Alpha 6 (Fuck that guy), Elgar (Fuck that guy), and Dimetria being very bad at her job. |
Never saw hate for justine as kid as I enjoyed his character as turbo was mainly season I remember most then season 2 and three of MMPR and even zeo I was born in 1993. Turbo was one I loved most. To point I really want turbo rescue mega zord and some one got before my mum. Never was I able to.get one of those still to this day.

Turbo is where I think the old format stalled. I didn't have wide see-everything-new type access, but even now, I'm not certain where to place it. Things were changing and the old crowd was, at that time, starting to age. By "old crowd", that can mean both the actors and the young audience who had been growing up with the franchise. I think it suffered from "Meh!". That feeling where nothing is really happening. After they regained their true bodies and physical forms, Bulk and Skull weren't really doing anything but bouncing from one job to the next. The Rangers were just responding to Divatox's attacks. Ultimately, the formula was wearing itself down after it had been continuously for the past several years. It needed a shot in the arm, and In Space was the answer. Per the original plans, In Space could've followed a far different path than it did, and if it followed what Turbo had been doing, I have doubts as to whether we would've gotten this far. Turbo is something that each must decide for themselves as to whether there is anything there for them. For me: Middle-ground.
For the In Space plans previously mentioned: http://www.morphinlegacy.com/power-r...ould-have-been |
I forgot Megaforce celebrated 20th anniversary back in 2013 because of the 2 year per a sentai season. I liked the opening theme and they did a good job making it less goofy as the Japanese counterpart.

I liked Turbo as a kid, I always wanted the turbo Megazord.
As an adult the series does little for me. It also kinda makes Zeo more bittersweet in hindsight since that season had cool suits, a sense of victory, and implied a bright future. Then Turbo came along and just kinda changed everything for the worse. It's almost hard to appreciate Zeo knowing it just goes downhill afterwards. If it weren't for In Space, I probably wouldn't have much inkling to go back and watch the Zordon era. I know it's been talked about for years but there's so many better ways they could've transitioned to Turbo from Zeo. |
I like the second half of the show, after the new cast came in. During the first half you could really tell that the writers had run out of things to do with Tommy, Cat, Adam, Tanya, and even Bulk and Skull. The new characters and Phantom Ranger mystery really gave the series a much needed shot of adrenaline. The back half really is an overlooked gem and I think it still has one of the best finales in the franchise.
