Jonathan Entwistle to Help Develop Power Rangers Show and Movie
http://www.morphinlegacy.com/2020/10...or-hasbro.html
Jonathan Entwistle is now connected to the franchise! |
Hell yeah!
I don’t know who that is! |

"Entwistle most recently co-created the Netflix original series I Am Not Okay With This and created Netflix original series The End Of The F***ing World." |
The End of The Fucking World and I Am Not Okay With This are great. This is a talented creator. He’s easily the best writer/director ever associated with PR.
However... pretty much confirms what everyone was sooooo sure wasn’t going to happen. It’s a near certainty that there will be no more Toei/Hasbro collabs after Dino Fury. |

That aside, alot of people around the net(atleast from what I've seen) seem to assume that, even if there were a "best case" scenario of even the live-action being all-original, that the writing, stunts, etc would all just magically improve to whatever standard they have, as if the show is tailor-made for them in the first place(not accusing you of this, btw). Meanwhile, keeping the footage from Sentai allows the budget to be used more in other areas, which is only a plus, and like it or not, the two series are really intertwined, so fully getting rid of the Sentai aspect would be like you disowning your sibling because strangers on the internet don't like them, if that makes sense. |

I believe that Hasbro wants to experiment with original productions as opposed to a clean break from Toei. Thanks in no small part to BOOM!, we now have ample material with no connection to Sentai to port over into Live-Action. The show has a history of including original villains and designs. I also perceive the possibility of animation to expand on the franchise. Transformers has precedence with doing more than one show or continuity at any one time. Why not the Rangerverse!? I'd rather believe in and see a ToQger adaptation air in the same year as an animated anthology AND a Live-Action Omega Rangers or Hyperforce! I'm also thinking of that slim chance that Hasbro will put one show on Nick and have one on Netflix. Again, precedence with Transformers. I know I'm spitballing, and I don't want to take away from the fact that Entwistle's connection is still a good thing for the franchise. |

I don't think Power Rangers will improve in much any sense whether they do this or not though - we have ten years of evidence showing they don't care to - it just makes sense to have more power over your brand especially as you've divorced from the toyline that continues to make all the merchandise from the franchise you're using. On the Sentai side of things... well, good, it allows that franchise to stand on its own and do more creative things than having to set things up for Power Rangers to steal from it. In fact a LOT of the projects they've done recently are pretty difficult to adapt even on an aesthetic aspect, so again, this is just a plus for each side. Sentai gets to do what it wants to do and Power Rangers doesn't have to tie itself into a knot figuring out the best way to market train powers or showa-esque monsters to a western audience. |
Quote:
And in terms of aesthetics, things really haven't been that bad. The only one that even sort of has an issue is ToQger, and mainly because trains aren't a huge thing in the US. Everything else, well, it's a much more interconnected world now. Anime and other foreign concepts are way bigger than they've ever been, even when it comes to kids. So if Sentai went absolutely crazy in terms of suit design, it wouldn't be that big of a deal, I think. I'd go on but I feel like the post would just spiral into a rant about the Toku Community, so I'll spare everyone that. Quote:

If PR is going to stay relevant, I think it needs to become its own thing, while ideally still preserving the things that made it a success to begin with. I think it's important to note that Entwistle mentions bringing the show's "spirit of analog into the future." This implies to me that he gets the show's identity and knows what makes it cool -- i.e., the analog/practical effects and man-in-suit fighting. Fingers crossed he's able to preserve the show's full identity and appeal while tailoring it for an older, more modern US audience. Quote:
Sentai has some of the best and most consistent fight/stunt choreography in any country, in any medium, flat out. These imagined improvements are not only unlikely, they're based in a fantasy world where an average weekly Sentai fight isn't already better than literally all Marvel/DC movie fight scenes put together. Or maybe there will be original live action shows and the cartoon will be for kids. Who knows at this point? Quote:

Otherwise, I'm hardly going to go about pointing out specific things - Sentai isn't my strongest point in tokusatsu and I don't really care about PR if it isn't RPM, decent comics, nice Sentai figures or a sick fighting game people are sleeping way too hard on - but if you're in this sort of partnership deal where the shows you make are going to be used by the company you're in a deal with to make their own show? You're probably going to make certain decisions in how you film things, take into account restrictions of the other company's target audience, even the entire premise from the get-go given that this adapted show is a toy commercial. Hell, I believe that for Magiranger they even done their shooting in New Zealand. It's pretty clear after the deal went away things started getting more experimental with more creative control that would make things difficult to adapt between a show with heavy Japanese iconography in every frame, a 35th anniversary which heavily used suits from before Zyuranger, and a show like Go-Busters which went out of its way to go against the format and formula of the franchise up till that point as much as it could. But then from then on you get much more standard, easily adaptable seasons like Kyoryuger, Ninninger; and then Kyuranger which we know Bandai of America had a hand in creating. But then very recently you suddenly get stuff like Lupat which once again is much more experimental and difficult to adapt... I'm just saying, there's some interesting patterns going on there. |

When Saban got the show back, and it became clear they were going to stretch a PR season over two years, Bandai started doing a "one for them, one for us" kind of thing. So we have Kyoryuger, which is very PR friendly. Followed by ToQger, which is... not. Then Ninninger, which is totally PR friendly. Then Zyuohger, which, again, is not. Then Kyuranger, which BoA actively had a hand in designing. Followed by Lupato, which is a wild formal experiment with designs that wouldn't translate in the US. And then finally, Ryusoulger, which really couldn't be more PR-friendly. |
Not until AFTER we get Kyuranger adapted first, like it should’ve been INSTEAD of Ryusoulger!

But look at Beast Morphers. As I understand it, both the toy sales and ratings are in toilet. Clearly, that show isn’t working, despite fans seeming to like it. Now, look at the Boom comics. They’re telling their own stories, which are rooted in nostalgia but not beholden to Sentai, and they’re a huge hit. And the Lightning Collection figures for Drakon and Ranger Slayer fly off the shelves. If you’re Hasbro, and you see that “traditional” PR adaptations of Sentai shows aren’t profitable, while the original Boom comics and Lightning Collection toys are, I think there’s a pretty clear road sign pointing you to where the money is. Ultimately, tradition comes in second to profits. A company like Hasbro, that spent billions to own PR, aren’t going to leave money on the table just because a minority of fans care about new Sentai adaptations. TBH, I think a lot of the future is still up in the air, and whether the traditional PR adaptations of Sentai live or die will depend on the success of Dino Fury. But just going off of what’s successful now, and what isn’t, the PR-Sentai union is not looking good. |
Quote:
They are also very different markets. The show is still catered towards 10-year olds, whereas all of the other aspects of the franchise, the Lightning Collection included, is catered towards an older audience and those who grew up with the franchise. I hardly think that Beast Morphers being not quite the success as some other seasons is going to make Hasbro go "Ah yes, clearly the answer is to cut Toei and cater towards adults!" Which, by the way? The those successful comics and figures? Guess what they're still tied to? Sentai. It's hardly a minority opinion either: This rumor has gotten many fans arguing every which way, to the point I wouldn't be surprised if Hasbro spread the rumor themselves just to "test the waters" so to speak. But that could just be me being a conspiracy nut for the first time ever. |

if hasbro is still doing that in their making of a pr series and that flops, that's bad news for pr. |
Maybe this will rekindle my love towards the franchise.

Honestly, if they do have a show that is Power Rangers and isn't adapting Super Sentai, I hope they don't just stick to the MMPR team. It's okay if they start that way, given what sample data they have, but it really shouldn't stay that way.
|
Whatever happens, I hope they start doing a connected universe/continuing story like the original Saban Era was.
|
To be honest, I agree with everyone.
Relied too much footage from Super Sentai is one of the reason why Megaforce is a dumpster fire (I glad Jonathan Tzachor is no longer with Power Rangers) Hopefully Jonathan Entwistle and Hasbro do better job with Power Rangers compare to Neo-Saban did. I wonder if Hasbro is going to continue with Toei or stop collaboration with them in order to their own Power Rangers since some of Sentai shows ain't PR-Friendly. Did I heard connected universe? I hope they set it up better compare to the early days of DCEU. If they did the right way, I'm in. |
Yes breaking from toei will mean live actions will be more expensive to make. Right now post DF we will have back pedal to adapt blocky words and cool ranger suits, rainbow trains, Too many rangers for a nick deal, cops and robbers, sparkly vehicles, or whatever we get in next from sentai. Of course some would be easier than others to adapt some will sell better but while the selection is vast there's any number of things to weigh.
Going free means freedom to try your own thing we know hasbo isn't afraid to shoot original footage. Òr even twist. Footage into more unique stories while saban felt trapped near the end. We can't judge stunt quality. Until it happens if the rumor is true it could be a blessing or a curse. Maybe the stunt quality will be on par with sentai maybe not but there's another advantage. If the stick with nick they can write stories for 20+2 episodes. Beast morphers s1 felt well composed to me I knew there was ore to come cause jp footage and news but stuff like Kyu would be hard. 9+ rangers sharing the spot light. Kyouryuu at least had the extra ranger be guest roles the main squad was always core5+gold and near the end silver. Grey aqua and violet were here and there. Kyuu all 9 are present early on one week we get red blue black green yellow the next gold and silver swap 2 out then pink tags in Quote:
Also i recall reading about how Toei had supposedly shot a version of the Legend war WITHOUT pre zyu rangers (not sure if it included dairangers or not, but we can probably assume that Spirit rangers and Titanium Ranger were absent just because suits likely weren't on hand for Japan to use. Whether this was true or not I can't say one way or another, maybe they forgot about it or something when assembling the first episode. Of course there was still the issue of the Goseigers being present so maybe that as a reason for Saban not using that version. Maybe Toei did it with the mindset that the gokai adapt team would be SEPERATE from the Gosei adapt team. But yeah SMF did a decent job digitally replacing Gosei Red with another Red(think it was bouken?) But I also recall reading that one of the people basically blew the budget by trying to reproduce sentai scenes when in the past PR has been perfectly content with inconsistancies during monster fights alley one scene clearly not the same alley the next, back into first alley its sorta what we expect after all. But yeah I still say the upside to breaking ties with Toei would be freedom to do your own thing to hand craft a story that can be told in 20+2 episodes in fact... if it wasn't for the merch (Beast X king zord, and Beast X mode) Hasbro could of done decent enough with JUST season 1 of Beast morphers. SUre it had its faults every ranger show does. But with a few minor tweaks they could of probably been perfectly fine with 1 20+2 episode PR season. Again Toys are a huge factor, MEgaforce managed to squeeze all of the Gosei mecha, minus Datas which they found away around into the series and toyline. Yes Hasbro had the extra hurdle of needing to MAKE the toys instead of relying on another company to do that for them. So There was likely more of a NEED to squeeze as much out of Beast morphers as possible and rushing to fit all the mecha into 1 year would be a lot of headache since that would mean rushing to produce and ship ALL the figures and mecha in that 1 year WHILE starting to work on scripts and such for whatever was to follow. Going out on their own will be risky no doubt... The stunts might suck, they probably won't be better than they are now but I feel we'll probably have something comparable. Also PR has a huge problem in this current era-its kinda hard for it to sell the mecha. Yes Sentai mecha is more expensive but at least from what we've seen in the past that 60-80 USD for the main mecha means decent quality... while a 30 dollar PR counterpart might be rather short, or just awkwardly proportioned. Heck I know some people weren't fond of the pose for beast morphers gorilla zord. At least the build a megazord MMPR dino megazord set (20 bucks a pack or whatever) looks of decent quality I mean I enjoyed the 'remastered' megazord from 2010 was it? Maybe its cause my mom was too cheap back in the days of MMPR to buy me a megazord. But yeah sadly PR mecha has to sort compete with the sentai mecha in this day and age where its somuch easier to order from japan than it was around the time of Gaoranger for example. Going and doing their own thing means having a chance that maybe more people will give the ranger mecha a chance since well clearly theres no way they already have the sentai model. But yeah Also I'm curious about the wording on the connected universe thing I mean technically Ninja Steel set that up with the dimensional hopping bit near the end. IS Hasbro doing a full reboot of sorts with Dino Fury and beyond? Are we just going to have a series of netflix specials and such that kinda go Well after series X so and so moved to Town Z and started company W that went on to create the tech for ranger team number 5000? |
If the show go's back to 40 episodes a season & have real cross overs again. And the next movie is not a reboot then this is great news.

All that aside, as others have mentioned Entwistle is a wild pick but I'm definitely intrigued. Both I'm Not Okay With This and End Of The F*ing World are pretty dark coming-of-age comedy/drama series (and both based on comics by the same author!), I enjoyed both of them a lot but suffice to say they're about as far from Power Rangers as you could imagine! My honest guess at this point is that Entwistle's series will be an edgier Netflix series separate to whatever regular PR season comes up next. (There's definitely precedent, Hasbro did this recently with Transformers Siege which was uh... nothing special but not awful.) I can see it being something which focuses much more on the rangers as people than the rangers as rangers, possibly not getting powers or properly forming a team until fairly late in. Pure speculation though! |

Again its hard not to compare the Beast X megazord with Go-Busteroh or whatever it was called. And new company means new molds sure, but in the past many people lost faith in Bandai of America stuff(outsideo f figures i'd say) so we got in a habbit of just ordering the Japanese mecha.. so unless your a diehard collector or a reviewer you have little reason to buy DinoFury Megazord if you already have all the Ryusoulger mecha. Also yes aesthetics as well as Nick's unreasonable (in my opinion) episode limit. ToQGer- maybe... but we'd need new foot soldiers I feel and I enjoyed the IDEA of color swapping but it honestly felt totally pointless. It didn't give any special bonus. We've seen rangers trade weapons on a few occasions before why not just throw red your your weapon. Yes if red and blue you can now SUMMON the other weapon but thats about it. Zyuohger- LOVE The rangersuits, and a good deal of the enemies sadly the mecha were not up there. Kyuranger- IF we had even a disney era 32 episode run I could say MAYBE... but the fact that one episode its Rangers ABCDE down on the ground and thenext its ABDFG or something the only constant being red, thered be no time to build anyone other than red i feel in the first season. S2 would bring in Phoneix and have silver go evil for a little bit (unless they started with dark silver) just TOOO Many rangers for the current format. LvP- Again i loved the idea of the series, the idea that the 4th was going to be a double agent and then Toei just bombed it. Like have him be more Phantom ranger or even Zeo GOld 2 how he shows up helps team A out one fight next fight he shows up as his other form to help team B.. .Then ep or 2 later he changes mid battle to make them wonder... I could see it working in a 20 ep season. After all you can have Patren X show up help the cops out, Then next fight scene Lupin X shows up hinders the cops/helps the lupinrangers. NEXT ep he changes mid fight.both teams wonder who's side this mystery ranger is really on. THEN 3rd ep you reveal his civilian identity to the two teams. I would of just loved if LvP had done a few episodes where they toyed around with his loyalty before having him waltz around with "Undercover" on his jacket. Kiramager- This i feel could probably adpat pretty easily Generic Evil Aliens, shiny vehicle mecha, The HARDEST thing would probably be the Masshin Expres/Smog JOukey bit... how did the evil aliens get thier hands on something that can combine with our new train zord? Though the monstersof the week are a lil... lackluster i mean i get it they are the bad guys we shouldn't get attatched but atleast the monster of the weeks for the other 4 had some individuality |
You guys forget the illuminaerdi article rumor remember we don't believe that any more Power Rangers is Sentai traditional adaptation so no more Hasbro/Toei ties colabs rumor after Dino Fury and there is more Sentai adaptations coming there is the only good way for the franchise's future.
|
I just like to see adapting kirameiger.
|
I just need to confirm that the bassist of The Who isn't coming back to life to produce a Power Rangers series.
|
writer Bryan Edward Hill has been tapped for the new PR movie.
https://deadline.com/2020/10/eone-ha...ie-1234604204/ |
I Hope this happens but i'll wait & see. Hasbro has said they had movies in the works & they never came to be like the MASK movie we were going to get 2 or 3 years a go. So will see..
|
> Titans
Mmmnnnnn color me slightly concerned cause everything I see and hear about Titans makes it sound somewhat joyless and "grimdark". Obviously one piece of work doesn't define a writer's talent but I'm hoping there's more balance there. |
>Titans
Ooooooh boy, what a.... poor choice of writers to go with. I mean, I know that one work doesn't define the quality of a writer, but man going with a guy who worked on Titans is... not making me feel confident, much like how people aren't confident with the head writer for Ghost being the head writer for Saber. Can't wait for one of the characters to say "Fuck Zordon" totally unironically and be grimdark edgelord grade storytelling. |
This is not what I want when I said I want Power Rangers to be a tad bit mature. I know Titans was just one show, but god I can already picture characters being edgelords, too many characters to fit in a movie, and one of them dying by mere electricution despite being extremely strong.
|
Oh boy, it's gonna be the 2017 movie all over again. Great...
|
They should have gotten the Saved By The Bell creators. Cause honestly MMPR was pretty much what if the Saved By The Bell cast were superheroes in spandex armor. None of this potential YA grim dark mumbo jumbo.
