So I just realized this while looking up Kiramager stuff on Japan, someone in Japan discovered that all of the episode titles are references to titles of Japanese movies.

What? The Kiramagers are fighting against each other due to the betrayal of Tametomo Imizu/KiramaiYellow usurping as the leader of the Kiramagers during the 45th Anniversary of Himitsu Sentai GoRanger (April 5, 2020)? Also, one of the punch lines was used in DekaRanger before! Boy! Such rivalries weren't new to Super Sentai. So, if the rivalries increased, perhaps their enemies were given a chance to defeat the heroes. That would've affect the team unity in the future.

I'm glad Tametomo is chilling out.

So, I said Shiguru was the one I wanted to be my favorite, but until further notice, there's just no denying that Tametomo is the person on this show I'm the most fond of.
Throughout these first couple episodes, I think his personality was already the strongest, so he's going into his first spotlight episode at an advantage to begin with. Where it gets truly crazy is that this one is also a lot more character-driven than the show has been so far, making the usual monster gimmick as helpful as it is problematic, and instead focusing the conflict more on Shovellow acting out, and how Tametomo has to deal with that as his partner. I think this all worked out great. The "mecha as characters" shtick is something I've always loved, and even in Go-Onger, a show built around that concept, you didn't always get episodes this focused on that aspect. Shovellow is great here. Just a weird old guy who is simultaneously manic and grumpy, trying to help out his buddy in the most misguided way possible. The humanization of the Machines here is wonderful, and that simple shot of the newly born accsessory mecha flopped on their sides to imply napping was probably my favorite thing in the entire episode. It was hilarious. One other common trope that scores huge points for me is that they do the "current situation causes character to reflect on previously unknown backstory", which, even though Tametomo's story about his grandfather is maybe a bit trite, it adds depth to his character, and puts his relationship with Shovellow into context. The "message" of this episode also seems to once again be deliberately muddled, with Tametomo proving Juuru is a good leader... by leading the team in a plot to fool Shovellow so he'll get off everyone's back. It doesn't really feel like a story that needed a moral, though, and I like that the show doesn't dance around that Juuru's only talented in certain areas. The robot fight here was also my favorite so far. Kiramaizin is a suit I fall more and more in love with each time I see it, and it gets to do so, so much here. The creativity this show is bringing to these scenes is off the charts, and I really hope these continue to be a highlight every week, because I like robots. Also, this is more just about the designs, but props for having the accessories in the left hand. As long as Jetta stays in that right one, I'm willing to consider that a proper component of Kiramaizin. I mean, swords are a huge deal to Sentai robots, it's not neccesarily as humiliating as you might think. One last super minor thing. I'm quickly falling in love with Sena's habit of speedily running into fight scenes while stretching out the end of her sentenceeeeeeessss!!! I would be totally cool if every single action scene in the show was written like that. https://i.imgur.com/IuRJlGv.png |
Honestly, I'm just quickly falling in love with Sena :lol
She's just so precious! Anyway, can anyone tell me the previous Sentai reference in this episode? |
I really like how this in-team dispute was resolved without bringing anyone down. Too often you see all the other rangers appear weak compared to the Red.
I'm sure Red will have his true time to shine, but I hope they do it while preserving the rest of the team's latent talents. |

Episode 1: Gekiranger Episode 2: Lupinranger VS Patranger Episode 3: Kyoryuger Episode 4: Zyuranger Episode 5: Dekaranger That's 5 down, 39 to go. Also the episode titles are wordplay on Japanese movies from mainstream stuff to super obscure ones. |
Well, to be fair, you could say any episode that Sena appears in her track suit is a Gekiranger reference.
