Zero Dragon Blood discussion
This one kind of slipped up on me. I knew it was coming this year and I'd even heard it was going to be airing this week, but I'd completely forgotten about it when the sub popped up at Over-Time. I was a little disappointed when this didn't air immediately after Makai Retsuden, but if the first episode is any indication it was totally worth the wait.
There's a certain tone and atmosphere I associate with the best of Garo. It's something that usually means that Keita Amemiya is directly involved with the series and it's something that I honestly haven't felt since Makai no Hana. Dragon Blood has it: this feels like old school Garo. The mood and atmosphere are there, the amazing action scenes are there, and the cool and badass hero is there. I like the Ryuga shows, but if I'm being honest, this is the kind of show that I like best out of Garo. I went into this with some apprehension after how Zero's last miniseries ended up, but if this episode is any indication we are in for a treat. |
One episode in and so far so good. Just a couple of teases for the over all plot for the series, once it gets going that is, hopefully we'll get a bit ore of Alice's background as the series progresses. And of course Rei was Rei so that was to be expected lol.
|
This one caught me by surprise. 😀 I had a thought telling me to check in on Over-Time. Because I'm currently uninterested in nothing that they're subbing right now. But lo and behold I saw this little gem.
For some reason I thought this would be coming out around Spring. But luckily that wasn't the case. Good to see Zero kicking ass again. Loved the first episode, I thought that woman was going to turn out to be a Makai Priestess working with Zero. But that would have been to similar to Garo the second coming. Can't wait to see how season two of the Zero series is going to turn out. Wonder if he's going to have any cameos? 🤔 |
Oh my god, I am excited for a Garo series again. This episode brought back the atmosphere, the choreography, the cinematography, and the music. My only complaint was the CGI blood and predictable plot. That aside though, this was great. I'm looking forward to more, but I hope they don't overstay their welcome and forget their plot by episode 10 like Raiga's season did.

Man, I really liked this. Black Blood was... ok but didn't leave a big impression. The first episode of Dragon Blood was much stronger and really gave off that Garo style that's been missing from some of the more recent Garo stuff. Excited to see more!
I'm glad Rei got rid of that fluff that was stuck to his chin. It wasn't a good look. Oh! I liked that the timer was onscreen when Rei transformed. Remember the time limit thing? |
The first episode was just totally badass. I missed Rei so much and this was just so kickass and well done. I am intrigued with the mystery of the egg and who was that at the end too. I've also missed the GARO series too so this was a great return for it.

Love the Timer being there, to keep them honest.

I enjoyed this new series, even if it's predictable (but what is not predictable in toku shows ?) I hope the characters will flesh this out.
As usual I cringed a bit on the "let's burn one big chunk of our CGI budget in the first episode to make it über cool" move, so I expect the following will be less impressive. |
I just started GARO (got that Maylasian Season 1-4 box) and, with arbitrary differences, this seems essentially the same (not 100% sold on GARO). It's beautiful, though!

The second episode was another good one. We are definitely back into standard monster-of-the-week territory, which is always one of the places where Garo has really managed to shine. The Horror doesn't get as much focus as the ones in Makai no Hana did, though, so there's still a good amount of time for developing the characters and some more teases for the main plot. I'm generally quite pleased with how well the show is balancing both ongoing and episodic elements so far. The Horror this week was really cool, too, one of the better designs we've had in a long time.
|
This show so far feels like EXACTLY the Zero series I wanted. Basically, what he gets up to when he's not helping out the Saejimas. I always liked that you could tell every time you weren't seeing a character in Garo, they were off doing their own thing. Like Tougen no Fue was just a Tuesday for Rekka & Jabi.
So the fact this is so far coming off like a regular Garo season, just with Rei as the lead suits me just fine. |
Watched episode 2, and we're still good so far. It's good to see the bartender from Black Blood return and we got a little shout out to Yuna and Kain which was cool. Alice seems to know more about things like Horrors then it first seemed. And it seems like his "I don't need any one in my life" shell might be starting to crack a little. And I liked the design for the Horror in this one, and the story about how the human got possessed, classic Garo.
|
We watched the second episode last night and it was great except for one thing, Alice's actress is horrible. Her dialog was so rigid and her facial emotions didn't even look natural with the dialog she was speaking. The Horror's design was the best since the horror movie Horror in Raiga's show.
|
Episode 2: This show is just so refreshing, but maybe that's just Rei himself because he just brings so much presence. Definitely intrigue with the ending and not surprised that Rei will probably end up fighting a Dragon in this series lol. I enjoy Alice right now though and figure that egg might be the said dragon.
|
Another good episode this week. I knew where the story was going pretty early on, but it was still executed well and had a good emotional punch at the end. We got some more advancement on the main plot, too, with the introduction of what I assume is our main villain (someone Kamen Rider fans will recognize and likely appreciate the irony of him playing a "Dragon Knight").
|
The story about the father and son felt like another classic Garo episodes to me. And the bar owner gave some pretty good insight about the "secondary" armor Makai Knights wear and it fit's Rei pretty well I thought. Looks like the main story about the Dragon knight is starting to get some traction know with an explanation on what or at least who he was back in the day, and maybe why he was concealed in that crystal to begin with. Not to mention what the egg means to Alice, hopefully there's some explanation somewhere about how she knows about the "Other world" like she does. Although three episodes in it does look like we're back to CGI Horror as the MOTW. Given how they looked and what they do it's understandable because that would be hard to pull off with a practical effect and still look good, but hopefully well get some proper Horror suit action before the show is over.
On a side note was this the first time we've seen a sheath for Rei's swords? Because I don't recall there being one before. |
What is it about sad Garo father-child episodes and guns?
Enjoyed the episode, but there is a weird connection between saddened parents and guns, whether or not a horror is directly using it or not varies. |
Episode 3: Was definitely one of those of yeah this is why I love Garo episodes. This was really powerful and I loved the story between the father and son and how it tied more directly to Rei rather than random thing that Rei has to stop. Enjoyed the second Armor analogy too and Alice's inquisitive nature is nice right now. The Dragon Knight seems badass and vicious, I can't wait to see what kind of villain he is. Loving this series right now and can't wait for more.

Okay, I'm going to call this right now: there is something weird going on with Alice. I thought at first that she was going to be this show's Kaoru, but a lot of her actions this week don't make sense if she's a normal, baseline civvy. She jumped down a friggin' well and landed without a scratch, for fuck's sake. Combine that with her tendency to approach first the Horror party and now Goro-chan with a solid stance rather than fleeing or panicking and I'm convinced she's not a normal girl. I don't know what she is, but I'm sure she's something special.
Anyway, it was another good episode, even with some wobbly CGI in the Zero/Ryuki fight. I was so happy to see Rekka again, even though I knew she was going to be in this series. It's kind of amazing to look back and see how subtly she creeped into being one of the major players in the Kouga generation. I feel like she's finally passed Jabi as the most prominent Makai Priest of this era. |
Episode 4: Continuing to love this series so much right now. Alice definitely has some sort of mystery going on here. Loved Rekka and Rei together because she is one of my favorite Priests and one of my favorite knights too. Can't wait to see if the egg hatches because that is going to be one hell of a Dragon. The Dragon Knight is kick ass right now and I hope we get to learn why he hates humans. Zero vs the Dragon Knight was super sweet and even if the CGI a little wonky it's still miles better than GARO has done in the past. Now if they can only get the CGI to look like how the real armored suit does we'd be in business. Can't wait for more.
|
Now we're getting into the background of the story behind the Dragon Knight, which isn't a title like I originally thought. And I kinda like that particular revelation if I had t be honest. It was good to see Rekka again, and I like the bit of banter between her and Rei. And I guess we know why Alice is going to have to stick around Rei now. At least it's a little better than one of the original descriptions why she hanging around at least, about her fainting after hearing Rekka mention the Dragon Egg or something like that. And I'm not sure how I feel about the idea that Kagome has her own "Navi", at least it didn't go "Hey! Listen!" lol.
On another side note I had to watch the beginning one more time because the statue in the distance looked a bit like the ones we saw in The one who Shines in the Darkness. Granted it probably the one we saw in the preview but at the time I was watching it thinking, "Does this take place in the same city?" |
So we watched episodes 3 and 4 last night. Except for Alice's continued lack of emotion (seriously, does she not have an acting coach to help her in this show?) and having Rekka back, they were good. My g/f got annoyed though because when the sister pulled out the fairy I kept screaming, "Hey, Listen! Hey, Listen! Hey, Listen! Hey, Listen!" repeatedly. the choreography and music continue to impress. In fact, the music was down right amazing in these two episodes. I do have the say that the gun horror fight felt really short to me. Not Ryuga short, but short enough. What the bar owner said about Rei having two armors makes a lot of sense and also explains Kouga's lack of enthusiasm (and why lunch with Kaoru seemed to be just as important as marriage). The Dragon Knight was pretty badass, but can someone tell me what the kanji read when he transformed since Over-Time didn't sub it?
|
Episode 3 was sad. 😭
Episode 4 was awesome. Loved seeing Rekka back in action. And hey, her and Zero should hook up. She'd keep him grounded and he'd get her to loosen up a bit. Not to mention how strong the Makai Knight or Priest would be conceived from those two. |
Episode 5 was surprisingly uploaded rather quickly this week. Shout Out to Over-Time 😉
More of a filler episode this week. Not really anything happening besides a realization of a need to build a cage. |
Another fantastic episode this week. I like how they found a way to balance giving us some backstory for Alice, a standalone weekly story, and some continuing development with the Alice as key story. Mix in some great action scenes and crazy-ass CGI creatures and this series is continuing to be a fantastic distillation of everything I love about Garo. Looking forward to the Mari vs. Kitazaki battle next week.
|
Just finished episode 3. I'm going to go eat a tub of ice cream now to help with these feels.
|
Interesting episode I guess. We get a bit more of Alice's backstory. Kinda felt a bit let down that she knew about horrors only because she was studying about the mysterious egg from her youth. But I guess it makes sense she was a n outsider who something that attracted her attention from an early age, I was hoping for something with a little more oomph though. Not sure what exactly but a little more than "Found it in a book". Did like the plot with the statue though and the twist at the end. Although he has to protect her now it is a little weird seeing Rei going a bit down the route Kouga did. Not sure if him and Alice are going to be the next Kouga and Karou but maybe it'll let Rei open up his secondary armor, so to speak, at some point.

We watched the fifth episode tonight and can I said that Alice's character just keeps getting worse with every episode? Her entire reason for wanting to find the egg was because she came across it as a child? You have got to be freaking kidding me!! That is the most shallow, uninspiring reasoning ever. She just set female characters back 40 years. Even Fuji in the original Ultraman has more personality than her and Fuji is as deep as a sheet of paper.
This episode was easily the worst of the show. We barely had any action. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that fight between Zero and the Horror was the most epic battle in the entire Garo universe that we never got to see. I would have rather watched him fight that over watching Alice talk to the bar tender. Oh, and what is even worse is the child that played young Alice had far more emotion and personality than her actress. |

Episode 5: I enjoyed the episode. I mean I thought the action was cool and the scenes at the end when Alice jumped off were beautiful to see. I might be the only one liking Alice's character but I thought she's gotten better each episode. Rei is still amazing and I am so glad they got back to using the 99.9 Second counter in GARO because they just stopped using it and I like the time limit aspect of it. Unless in Ryuuga's time they found out how to make it last indefinitely or something. Well I can't wait for more and for the fight against Mari/Mio next episode lol.

She's not an actress. She has no range of emotion and her face is so flat whenever she speaks. It looks like she is reading her lines from a teliprompter whenever she speaks. Also her delivery is so jagged.
|
I really like Alice too. I don't think it's that she's incapable emoting, she just has an incredibly weird (I want to say child-like but I don't even think that's right) of expressing it. She's odd, but in a charming sense.
Plus the actress is super cute, so whatever :lol |

Kind of a weird episode this week in that it's mostly set-up for next week's episode. A lot of dominoes are lined up, but I can't help but feel that not much actually happened outside of Kagome joining and immediately betraying the team. I'm not entirely sure what I think about her: she's either a well-meaning moron or she's secretly following her own agenda and I can't tell which it is yet. In either case her barrier spell reminds me a lot of the David Lynch Dune movie, which is amusing to me.
In other news, I'm starting to reevaluate Alice. I think it's less likely now that she has some kind of hidden power and more that she's just sort of an idiot who's gotten really luck so far. |

I watched the latest episode, waiting for a transformed fight that never came. I wasn't annoyed by that though. Like you say, every so often, Garo dials things back a little, and this was one of those. Alice does somewhat feel like a retread of Kaoru - an innocent human who stumbled into this world of Horrors and Makai Knights/Priests. She's not as endearing as Kaoru was, but not really a detriment to the show in any way. |
