Does any Grongi even have a body count over three digits? Because I see (generally tongue-in-cheek) complaints about the numbers all the time, but, at the risk of treating murder as just another statistic, all of them added up probably wouldn't actually be that significant of a chunk out of one of the world's most populated cities.
I obviously get that it's just a general atmosphere of terror anyone would logically want to get away from, but the Grongi straddle the line between serial killers and natural disaster, and there are plenty of real life cases of people keeping calm and carrying on while being at risk to either of those. I don't think it stretches disbelief as much as it seems like since as the viewer, we're seeing nothing but the monsters. And if we wanna talk realism, I'd kind of love to see someone work out the logistics of a sudden mass exodus of Tokyo and all the problems that would create. |

For me, it's less the individual body counts (which are still massacres!) and more that this shit is happening weekly in Tokyo for a year. I understand people persevering in wartime (Build, for example, makes a meal of that concept), and the odd natural disaster is a tragedy. It's just, this would be like if a train line derailed every few days or so for a year. Stop taking the train! Avoid all trains! |
In all fairness, Tokyo has an incredibly large population. A few hundred people is barely a blip.

And, like, look. I'm not super mad that a kids' sci-fi monster show from 2000 didn't delve into the way citizenry acclimates to terror. That's a difficult theme, and maybe one a 20-minute tokusatsu show shouldn't try to tackle. I mostly think it's funny how insanely deadly the Grongi are, how dissimilar that is to the Phase II Heisei "we have to save this one person who's in trouble this week" storytelling, and how kind-of pathetic it makes the Task Force look. (They let 90 teenagers die! From one school! In one week!) For Gaim, like, didn't they launch nukes when they thought Helheim was invading? I'm not suggesting Tokyo needs to be obliterated (although someone's Rider Kick I guess disagreed), but just leaving a rapidly-escalating body count to the Metro Police... seems like they aren't taking this too serious! Seems like I shouldn't then, either! |

To go off your uncooked burger metaphor, for me Kuuga is is like a premium aged steak from a good steakhouse. They season with a bit of salt but it's all about the meat. Build got me back into KR and it's probably my second favorite series now, but modern KR to me still feels much more like the kind of steak you'd get at Applebee's. You took an ok piece of meat and threw a bunch of sauces and toppings over it instead of just letting it be a steak. Or maybe like one of those abomination chain pizzas where it's not just a pizza, it's a pizza that's also a taco and a fruit salad. As much as I love Build, I really miss the straightforwardness of Kuuga. |

I get what you're saying, about Simplicity vs Maximalism. It's definitely a stylistic choice, not a right-or-wrong proposition. I try to be mindful of that, and be upfront about my aesthetic preferences, i.e. Why Isn't Something Flashing Or Shouting Or Exploding Every Second. Kuuga does not do a lot to distract. It's methodical, rather than frenetic. If that's what you want out of Kamen Rider, and the sensory assault of the later Heisei stuff feels off-putting, yeah, Kuuga's going to work great. For me, the straightforwardness... it just felt thin to me. Like it needed some other levels to be worth all of the time spent on it. Still, that's just my emotional response to Kuuga. I think it's interesting how many people find a real primal connection with what Kuuga's doing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it! |
Not sure why I decided to say it today, but... I've got a confession.
Every single time you said "Pole Pole" in this thread, Die? I... didn't know that was the name of the restaurant, and thought it was a snarky way of referring to the police. It's absurdly funny looking back on this in hindsight. |

But, not responding to posts made on threads I started... that's not really my thing? So I'll just say that, as someone who maybe didn't get the point of anything Kuuga was doing, this is an okay level of confusion to have. You're definitely on the low end of the scale. |
If there was any one term to be confused about in Kuuga, it's downright poetic to have it be the name of the business run by the guy who constantly gets confused about terminology.
