Kamen Rider Revice Episode 36- "Humanity At The Crossroads!" Discussion
With Fenix destroyed, only Weekend stands between the world and the demon apocalypse.
Watch SuperHeroTime Via Livestream!! Check out episodes as they air on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block now start at 8PM EST on Saturdays! |
Y'know it's almost to a point where I'm convinced Kinoshita is wishing he was writing a show where Sakura was the Main Rider with Hana as her secondary. Especially keeping in mind his first pitch which they rejected.
|
So Hana's rider name is Kamen Rider Aguilera, and is armed with a pair daggers that are actually repainted Ichigo-Kunai from Gaim (which I'll admit is a pretty clever reuse of props).
Also, the visor for Aguilera is actually pretty normal, it's just the helmet design draws everyone's attention to the stinger. |
|
It seems Revi and Vice's Final Forms power source are from Gifu.
So, maybe they need to get some of Gifu's powers from Akemi's Deadman power? Also, George are more likely trying to make the strongest ViStamp (for Final Forms) and the Demons Driver in mass-produced version. |

If anything, I think this may lead to a Kagerou return, just have a strong feeling about it. |

I feel some pity for Daiji and how he is treated, this guy can't have a break. I don't see Kagerou coming back but I could see Daiji behind overwelmed by his darkest impulses and succumbing to them making him even more dangerous than his former demon. (except if Ikki does save Akemi though)
I've got nothing bad to say about this episode or the previous one. I like the fact that Hana won't stay on the sideline and that no one really does. Though...That suit could be better... So, we're going to have our Riot-Trooper type rider in the form of Kamen Rider Demons if I got that right. |
I'm surprised no one wrote about the resemblance:

-new Rider debut! I wish they gave her literally any other name than Aguliera tho, feels a little weird to make your hero name after the name the cult that groomed you gave you, no?(Like there's the element of reclaimation that you could argue that they did, but still!) There's something really cathartic about a female Rider making the "our MC will obviously need his final form to defeat him!" villian back down, I must admit! It'll probably take me a while to get used to the suit, but it's a fun debut.
-Surprised at how.....unimportant??? Genta's return ended up being? Nice to see him back though! Apparently the girls are getting their own Legacy special next, let's hope they dont suddenly disappear out of the narrative when that happens. -Ngl, if Tamaki's role in this plot merely ended at "I recongize there are things that only I can do (as a non-Rider), so I intentionally led our heroes toward Vail!", I might have been sastifated. However.... As much it is partially amusing to see a dude fail a henshin for the girl to step in and save the day....i think they were a bit too cruel to Tamaki? Like even if he's *totally* going to get that mass-produced Demons Driver, it's still quite mean to pull something like that montage! -So, essentially, Daiji's role in the Director's scheme that he'll play the part of the martyr to Fenix's cause to convince the masses to get stamped, if I'm interpeting this correctly? How interesting...(Also everyone goofing around while Daiji is getting his ass beat is hysterical!) -Speaking of...Um. I don't know how to put this subtly, but like. Maybe it isn't a good idea to have the story say that the treatment to a potenially cataphrosic event to be actually the scheme of an evil conspiracy of a goverment-affilfated organization, in this current climate? (I know, I know, that's probably me being too anxious about things and reaching where I shouldn't be, but still......) |

But this episode could've been so much more, if only they'd realized Tamaki's potential worth to it. Having Daddy tell Aguilera not to be ashamed of that name is weightless, compared to what they could've done instead. You literally already have Tamaki refusing to call her Hana, and it would've been so easy to turn that into something meaningful. If Aguilera needs convincing that name can be more than just the name of all her mistakes, who better to inspire that change in perspective than the literal living proof Aguilera can bring hope to people too? This was such a missed opportunity to present this same theme in a much more complex and character-driven way, where you could recontextualize and redefine the relationship between those two characters. Tamaki's obsession becomes more than just a joke if you give him the chance to explain himself, and Aguilera would have the chance to maybe even rethink how she views Tamaki. And I'm not even asking her to fall in love with her stalker here! What I'm saying is that, if the episode had bothered to more genuinely explore the motivations behind why Tamaki is in a rush to grab a Rider belt and protect someone who matters to him, it could've ended up being a really touching turnaround when Aguilera resolves to be the one doing the protecting instead. ...But that whole notion is consigned to one throwaway line at the end that immediately gets undercut with a gag about Tamaki still wanting to transform, and I'm sorry, but it feels like a waste. I always hate to criticize a story in this fashion -- "it'd be so much better if it were this completely different thing that *I* want to see!" -- but I feel like I'm acting in good faith here? I'm seeing what the story was going for, and I'm saying how I feel like it could've accomplished that more effectively. I've been actively trying to not tear into Revice too much, but this particular topic gets me particularly fired up. I just... I love stuff about names, I guess. Like, in real life, we all have them, and we probably don't think about it that much, but every name is like a prayer. They all hold meaning, and when I see a story that makes a point of that, it can end up leaving a real impact on me. I could go on a whole rant about how beautiful Akira's introduction in ToQger was right now, or Ultraman Geed, for example, but that's all beside the point. What's bugging me here is that when we found out about Julio's past as Tamaki-kun, those episodes of Revice left such an impact they made me never want to call him the former name ever again. When Sakura suddenly called Aguilera-sama "Hana" a few episodes back, all I could think was "wait, who the heck is Hana?". It's like... this episode did a lot to make up for the failings I thought that one had, but it did it in a way that also had some similar issues. I don't know. I don't want to just dump all over Revice like it's some bad show. The only reason I'm even complaining is because I already do like it enough that I want to see it do even better. But among a series of little missteps it seems like the writing has lately, the way Aguilera's change in name happened was a particular sore spot for me. Still, this really was a solid debut for a new Rider, all things considered. |

Anyway, 1000% agree on your take about Tamaki and Hana, it would've been lovely. |
At the very least, the episode finally made me like Daiji in a form of pity for what the writer is doing to him. There's no Hiromi to humiliate anymore, so Daiji is next target.
Just look at him https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...77/unknown.png |
that scene with Daiji is gong to be a meme
|
I miss Hiromi. His departure really left a hole in the series that hasn't been filled.
Sakura and Hana's plot failed to connect with me because it forced Tamaki to become an annoying gag. The entire point of their growth from frienemies to friends/partners was that Hana needed a chance to be normal and have a friend...Except Tamaki tried that. The plot forced her to be a cold bitch to everyone but Sakura, removing any subtlety to how she viewed their relationship. Tamaki lost his only friend, then got betrayed by an ally, lost his only friend again, was forced to choose between the heroes and Aguilera, and then finally when Hana left Giff behind entirely, she was utterly cold to Tamaki, making him feel useless since he can't fight anymore. I know it might sound sexist or something to have wanted another boy in the predominantly male Kamen Rider club, but it felt like Tamaki's character arc was headed towards this direction. It also feels like Hana was never Tamaki's friend wish how she's been towards him ever since Olteca's death. |
There is that announced spin-off of Jeanne and Aguilera with a supposed new Rider (which could be Tamaki). Hopefully, the guy gets his own Weekend belt and his own Wolf Vistamp back to transform.
And then Hiromi comes back and becomes the de-facto field leader of the Weekend Riders (Hikaru and Go). :D :D :D |

It may just be an alternate version of Aguilera, an evil version probably. |
I forgot to comment on this thread yesterday when I watched the episode, but I got to think this over a bit more this way.
I've been trying to put my mixed thoughts on Revice into words, because it is a very unique show with lots of great aspects, but I often feel like it fumbles the execution of its ideas. I like this episode, but seeing Fish mention an alternate scenario where Tamaki gets to play the role of getting Hana to accept her past and old identity? That sounds so much better for both Hana and Tamaki's arcs! There is a noticable roughness to a lot of aspects of Revice where I just wish they handled things a bit differently. It isn't enough to make me dislike the show by any stretch, but I do feel like the show fails to reach its full potential. I digress though, I really do like Sakura and Hana's dynamic and it was a nice episode overall. Greatly enjoying Daiji's pain train too. |
Everyone's officially buddies now, by here. By the change (not only literally) of the former Deadman's attitudes.
At first, Aguilera was still a cold bitch towards Tamaki, even if Tamaki's behavior to be overprotective for someone stronger than him can be grating. I guess the episode fleshed her more with how she's the type to run away from the past at first, using her Hana identity to forget the atrocities she has committed in the past. I wonder if she acted bitchy towards Tamaki before was partly due to this too, to reject anything related to the past (still no excuse). But the fact is, she did commit all those atrocities, and it can't be undone (as there seems to be no time travel in Revice for now, unknown if George can create it) what you'd do is not only claiming to change and atone but also proving it. It'd be better and more benefical to help out rather than being inactive due to being sealed or killed, if they have the capacity of redemption. And she herself admitted now that she did those evil acts as a evil queen, like Tamaki before, so that shows that it's not that Aguilera did nothing wrong before as a Deadman and that all of the blame can be deflected away to others due to how there's a victim status in herself. Better than leaving her only being around I guess (even Kimiko appeared here!). Other than her debut as a Rider to help out, by taking back her old alias Aguilera as per Masumi's suggestion (I'd always call her that anyway due to Hana name already being used before in this franchise), it seems that she starts treating Tamaki better as well (it should be a start), addressing her superiority to him by resolving to protect him instead, and even to Vice, she acted playfully towards him, not haughtily, now also integrating with the other main cast. Other than her, to a smaller extent Tamaki too undergoes a change here, not as in successfully 'change' in 'henshin', but his goal and motivation now. They made use of Tamaki being forced to smile, in his bullying days and Deadman days, as a stock Kamen Rider goal of making everyone smile. This being Tamaki though, probably this is played up in parodic way, albeit this is one of his bigger role after being separated from his Giftex role, albeit at first was about his repetitive motivation again to join Weekend (yeah, at the early part of the episode both the former Deadman generals acted like previous self), And as expected, he failed to henshin, due to the Kamen Rider motivation boast leading to Vail acquiring his ViStamp. Still a derp.... or perhaps what 'realistically' can happen when the opponent acts against someone posing for a fight. He's also was useful as a hostage and bait here, quite as expected. Actually because he's joining Weekend, he should re-take karate practice again with Sakura and Hikaru, like he did when he tried to deceive Sakura before, but no two-faced stunts again anymore. Other than the Deadmans... Genta here also has returned, and vowing to settle his problem with Vail. Even Genta's resolve here seems more firm than Tamaki above, though he... vailed here due to his injuries. I didn't expect here that even Aguilera wasn't an official member yet here at Weekend and this was her final test, and it seems that Weekend still carries some extreme methods, to have Tamaki in his human form being plunged into danger as his test to become a member. Less so for Aguilera as an actual Rider (her shooting Vail wasn't a test but done on her own volition). Even Sakura here still calls them out on this to put Tamaki in dangerous situation, though she quickly submits on Hikaru's explanation of this being Weekend's test. She'd still later defend Tamaki when he passed. I guess if she's fully affectionate to Aguilera and stands up for Tamaki against a friend she knew longer, she'd also better view Masumi in better light, as she did bring up about how him trying to atone isn't enough to erase his previous sins, but said Aguilera or even Julio was more malicious than Masumi in her evil queen actions. Fenix's plan now apparently is about ViStamp mandate to remove demons from their bodies. Masumi's original plan, I hope the next episodes will flesh this out more, likely showing the consequences of Masumi's original extreme methods if fully done, especially if this is Akaishi's scheme. Or not as Daiji was actually doing his Fenix job here by guarding a Stamping site, and fought against what Akaishi actually did again by driving people away from Giff Juniors and also fighting against a Hell Gifterian, who apparently can speak. Daiji got heavily injured again, this time as a jobber to newer threat that can punch out Holy Live quickly, and has similar regeneration as Olteca in his final fight. Likely that'd be the one to spark Revice's final form. But overall despite a destroyed base, and George now residing in Happy Spa, Fenix's still operating. Regarding George, like above former Deadmans, Ikki accepts George here without (justified) doubt and animosity anymore, with George's change too now, hence 'everyone' being buddies now. Other than Aguilera beating Vail in a fight here due to Vail not acquiring Aguilera's ViStamp yet, which is apparently based on Muhammad Ali's "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" fighting style (from what I catch, she targeted lower body parts a lot, and her finisher includes trapping their legs too), it's quite satisfying for me to have Vice get back at him, to mock his demonic life boast with Vail running away from Aguilera. Otherwise, as usual, Vice is still an attention whore despite that he cares more about people around him now, though not helped as Ikki joked about Vice being useless now in the face of Aguilera. Ikki pulled quite brutal joke right there still. His previous fight with Revi against Akemi showed a Deadman that can't be instantly cured, only temporary, but probably Akemi's brief conversation does show that Akemi is brainwashed, or likely went undercover against Akaishi. Either way, someone much more upstanding than Chigusa. Probably that'd also be used to show off Revice's upcoming final form's capabilities, with said using Giff power she claimed. Quote:

"Don't abandon the name Aguilera but wear it with pride." That's a line I think makes this episode great. You can't erase your sins, but you can still atone.
But I have to agree that at this point, the writers wanted the yuri couple to be the protagonists. They're not bad characters, as they're actually some of the best, but I feel as though Daiji's kind of being sidelined, which looks like won't be for long. Ikki on the other hand looks as though he too will be accepting his darkness in order to defeat Gif. Akaishi might not be the best villain, but he certainly knows how to make a good show to further his plans, always two steps ahead of the heroes. Vail is like Evol, in how he was defeated by a power he wasn't confronted with, probably not as cool as Evol, but still a villain in Revice I enjoy. So now Tamaki and Hana have officially joined Weekend, and both had a pretty good show of it (definitely think Hana/Aguilera might be the show's best heroine). Next Episode: *Akaishi continues to make funny faces* |
