Thunderbolt Fantasy
Anyone else watching Gen Urobuchi's new puppet show?
|
What's it like?

Wait what.

Think Thunderbirds, but replace "rescue vehicles" with "Eastern fantasy". It's also streaming on Crunchyroll. |
Ah. I was thinking "cute fuzzy hand puppets that look like something from PBS Kids start off all happy smiles and then all start nihilistically contemplating suicide when shit hits the fan."
|
I would also watch that show :lol
It's definitely worth checking out though if you're into that sort of aesthetic. Visually it's quite a sight. |
I watched the promo a few days ago.... I need this show in my life. Does it have English subs yet?!
|
Sure does :)
|
Can you watch it if you don't have a cruncyroll membership? Asking as someone who's never used it before
|
It absolutely fantastic. The puppetry makes the show amazing.
|
I'll watch it to check out the puppeteering, but I don't expect much else. I'm not a sucker for eastern fantasy and the designs of the puppets look generic as hell.
|
I enjoyed this WAY more than I thought I would. It's pretty bad-ass.

Looks like a lot of people on this board have never seen Pili or Golden Light before.
If you haven't, check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiJEdqxf7R4 But even still, the story, characters, and action of Thunderbolt Fantasy top anything that Pili or Golden Light can dish out. And they've been doing it for 40 years. |
There are more Puppet Dramas?! I am strangely in love with this stuff.

Tokusatsu in its proto state began as travelling puppet dramas featuring heroes and monsters. Performers would go from town to town and put on shows for people featuring various heroes. (the very first tokusatsu superhero came from these shows) This was also a tradition in China and it's pretty cool to think of them as a branched evolution. Puppet shows in Japan lead to tokusatsu programs while those in China lead to actual puppet TV dramas. |
I watched episode one and well... it's pretty awesome. The puppeteering, fight choreography and effects are all great. Story seems rather generic but hey, it's only the first episode.
I'll continue watching for sure. Quote:

This scene right here is one of my favorite fights in all of Pili: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_Ab_3Z5Ugg |
That is fantastic to learn about. I'll see about getting into others but I am loving Thunderbolt Fantasy right now. Episode 2 was a blast I love Shou Yun Xiao, The Sharp-Eyed Impaler that was a fantastic fight scene with him.

God this show is just so good.
|
This is an amazing show. Can't wait to see more of it
|
This newest episode almost gave me heart attack with that battle at the end there. Woo, thank god everyone lived.
|
So I was curious about this strange taiwano-japanese co-production with Gen Urobuchi involved, and I've caught up on the show.
I never thought I would say that about a show with puppets, but man it seriously kicks ass. The only bad thing I have to say is that it's not on weekly release ! |

Great looking show, enjoyable characters, not much substance to it though. I enjoy watching it because it looks pretty and I've grown to like the characters (I especially adore XÃ*ng HÃ*i) but I feel like the pacing is way off. They took it really slow with getting the journey started, and now 2 of the 3 out worldly challenges they build up on go down in one episode? What?
I mean, it was neat (especially Shāng Bù HuÃ*n ending up in trouble twice) but why so fast all of a sudden? I realize the show will probably end before the twenty mark, but still. Wish they’d either cut some build up or a few characters to flesh it out a bit. Because with the pacing all over the place it doesn’t feel right, especially if they rush the ending now. Do we know how long this will run? Because if this is just a first half which introduces another problem ala "Legend of Zelda" I won’t complain, but I don't see it happening. |
I have to agree with Kiwami, they built up how important and dangerous the trials were going to be and they finished most of them in one episode. BTW, I might've missed it, but how many episodes will this show have? Is the next episode the last one?
|
I think it's 13, but I haven't seen any real confirmation of it.
|
I'm still loving the hell out of it. I don't think they needed to waste time on the trials if they had the right pieces to overcome them quick.
|
I tried watching this. I just can't handle the puppets, they weird me out too much.

I find it simply fascinating how a single episode and such a simple twist can reframe the show and its characters so radically. Up until the latest episode, I didn't think much of this show. It wasn't bad, and it was technically impressive, but I didn't have much of an opinion on the characters or the plot. It all seemed too straightforward and a little bland. Now, though? Damn.
In particular, the conflict between Can Yu's idealism and the reality of Yun Xiao's failure to meet the ideal is really interesting to me. It really makes the latter appear as a truly reprehensible person, so twisted by his need to keep up appearances that he has thrown away everything else. The conflict within Can Yu is palpable, and definitely has me invested in what he will do in this last stretch of the show. I really do expect him to end up doing the right thing--though I also expect that it will cost him his life. And rip the Screaming Phoenix Killer. A badass to the end. You know, I really do enjoy his sort of singularly focused character. Having him throw shade at the others was also great. Deefinitely looking forward to seeing how the end of the show shapes up. |
Yeah that last episode did a number on me because I was a huge Shou Yun Xiao fan and seeing his true feelings made me break down a bit lol. Though Juan Can Yun, Dan Fei, and Shang Bu Huan I love though I'm still doing good.
The Screaming Phoenix Killer was an amazing character too bad he had to meet the fate of the Urobutcher lol. |

And the pay off was amazing IMO, the action scene in episode 12 with the wooden stick is so good. The last episode was great too, I wished the Demon God would’ve been an actual puppet and the fight would've been a bit longer, but the way they ended it with Shāng pulling a Matrix-style armory scene with the scroll was great. I'm happy they're making a sequel. |
This has been my favourite show of the year so far. So happy to see it getting a sequel.
Also nice to see if getting Nendoroids, but I'd love it if GSC could pump out some figures that look like the actual puppets (3A would be good at something like that, but this probably isn't in their interests). A whole set would be far too pricey but I'd love the Screaming Phoenix Killer. |

Figures reminiscent of the actual puppets would be awesome though, if they could make figma's which actually look like the puppets that would be ideal. But I think you’re right, unless a company who works with such things gets their hands on the license it won’t happen. In fact if GSC continues making Thunderbolt Fantasy figures I’m pretty sure they will be either cutesy stuff or figures based on the manga version of the show. Which looks absolutely horrible IMO. |
Oh Figma would definitely be welcome (and at least allow me to buy the whole cast) but I get the sneaking suspicion that none of these are going to look quite right unless they come with fabric clothes etc. just because of how great the puppets look. So that really just leaves either a 12" scale or doll line to choose from - neither of which usually come cheap.
|
Doesn't the Good Smile Company make Figma as well? Because I know they sponsor this series so I imagine it happening. I could see them turn out well because their are anime images of them that look really well. I just need figures of Shang Bu Huan and Lin Xue Ya stat lol.
|
Finally got around to finishing the series. The last episodes were pretty great. I'm almost disappointed that Yun Xiao died in the manner he did, but when I really think about it the fact that he just got backstabbed and then was never brought up again is a pretty fitting end for the bastard. All in all, the fights at the end were just pretty neat, and there were some great character moments in there. Lin Xue Ya losing his cool for the first time when Tien Hai destroyed the sword may just be my favorite scene in the whole show. It was great.
And yeah, super glad there's gonna be a sequel! I've been thinking this since fairly early in the show, but the world they've set up is one that appears to be wide and full to the brim with interesting characters and lore, and the show, good as it was, barely scratched the surface of it. Definitely looking forward to more. |
So would it be a good idea to describe this to friend as "Bleach with Puppets and written by the Madoka Magica guy?"
