Rewriting Kamen Rider Zi-O
Hello, I've originally wanted to post this on the "Does everyone else dislike Zi-O?" thread but figured might as well make a new thread. This thread is dedicated to fix Zi-O's issues and I'd love for others to give their input. As we all know, Zi-O is sadly wasn't that great (especially compared to Build and maybe Ex-Aid) and almost everyone agrees the show is very confusing, thanks to the time travel aspect of the show.
Be warned, this post is long. And it might sound more like a fanfiction, so mods feel free to move it if you think it is. So, the thing that makes the show's time travel is very confusing are the Ridewatches itself, specifically on how it screws up the Rider history. I know they wanted the Legend Riders to lose their powers to be parallel to Gokaiger but they needed to do something different, but what they did isn't that good and outright confusing (take shots whenever I say confusing). First, I need to alter the premise and the cast slightly. We still have Oma Zi-O and that Sogo is destined to become him. BUT, the Time Jackers are instead Oma Zi-O's minions, sent to the year 2018 because that is the year where Kamen Riders are fallen and Zi-O rises. But, opposing Oma Zi-O are of course, Geiz, Tsukuyomi, AND Woz. Each of them has the same goal: to stop Oma Zi-O, but each have different methods. Geiz still wants to kill present day Sogo, while Tsukuyomi wanted to avoid letting Zi-O becoming a Rider, while Woz, he knows Sogo is destined to be a Rider, but at the very least he wants Sogo to be a good king instead, and thus he still provides the Ziku Driver but makes sure Sogo doesn't become Oma Zi-O. With this, we have roughly the same characters while changing them just a little bit. Woz is still with his "waga mao" stuff, but this time he's on the good side. And now, onto the Legend Rider and Ridewatch stuff. I admit, I'm not a fan of erasing the Rider's history and this is what makes the show very confusing to watch. So my take on this, is that Time Jackers steals the Rider powers in 2018 to create Another Riders in that same year. With this, you can have the Riders losing their powers but still retain their development, ala Gokaiger. This is what I wanted from the returning Riders, having shown their growth and mentoring Zi-O and Geiz and while admittedly some of them does this anyway, I would have preferred this route. But how will they do time travel since it's part of the show anyway? Well simple, Another Riders needed to be defeated by the same Rider powers, but since they lost their powers in the present day, the only way is to travel back when they still had their powers, and Zi-O needs to temporarily borrow their powers, creating a Ridewatch. And then, after defeating Another Riders, their Another Watch would be purified into another copy of the Ridewatch, thus giving Zi-O the ability to still use the RideArmors while the Riders of the past retains their powers and history. But the twist is that when Zi-O returns to the present, he finds out that the present day Legend Riders are still powerless, and that is a mystery that they need to solve. Now I have to admit I do like the episodes written by Nobuhiro Mouri (so much I just want to consider him the main writer instead of Kento Shimoyama) and what he did to the Legend Riders such as Eiji becoming a politician. Now in this rewrite, it wouldn't be far fetched to still make Eiji becoming a politician after his show ended (and make him married to Hina and the reason why Hina was in KuroKing's castle was to rescue her husband, and also this is before Another Ending so Kuroto is still alive). Also, during the Gaim arc, there's some differences. Present day God-Kouta has lost his ability to transform into Gaim but still possesses his Man of Beginning powers, and, I'm going to write this very basically, he sends Zi-O to 2013 because Geiz was trapped in 2013's Helheim (and through there Geiz meets Kaito who was training as Baron and Kaito wants to test him before he returns Geiz back to the real world, effectively making them having a mentor-student moments. This is because I found it baffling to see Kaito able to survive Helheim for 5 years with his clothes still in good conditiong lol). But upon returning to present day, Sogo is shocked to find that Fruit Jesus is now back to the normal Kouta, meaning that the mystery that plagues the present day Riders are affecting everything. And that is all. Basically, I want them to have a pretty much same show but with better explanation and not ruining the Riders history confusingly. While this might be as confusing, at the very least I hope it streamlines it up. If you have something to add and questions, please hit me up. Apology for the long write though, hope you all can enjoy it. |
I think it's a bit too early to do this. Zi-O's only starting to get to the point it took for Gaim to supposedly get good

You can't go right when writing time travel, there's always a monkey wrench along the way that derails the logic.
But it's true the writers really take it easy in Zi-O and so many things are handwaved that there's a nice breeze when you watch it. It was okay in Den-O because Den-O was first of all a comedy. Is it okay in Zi-O if it's an hommage serie ? |

There are only two changes I would make to the show at this point (but I reserve the right to change my mind in the future if things don't improve much and/or get worse):
Firstly, I would have established Sougo's dream in the first or second episode. Knowing that he had a prophetic vision would have made his whole king motivation feel like it had a basis instead of just being some random delusion. Second, I would get rid of Geiz's stupid dickie. That thing needs to die in a fire, like, yesterday. |

Oh, and if anyone goes "Time travel badly written, do better writing for time travel!" then I'm afraid you aren't aware how ridiculously easy it is to fuck up time travel plots |

As much as I love series like Gaim and Ex-Aid and Build, I honestly think they've spoiled people in terms of what they expect from every series.
Everyone wants each new series to be 100% perfect with complex characters and high-level story-telling from the start when that's just not how works with some stories and scenarios. For example, everyone holds Gaim on a pedestal, but it didn't get serious and start opening up what was really happening until about 12 episodes in. Ex-Aid you can say didn't really get serious until Genm killed Kiriya, which happened in the same episode as a literal Christmas musical number. While on the flipside, Build's storyline and plot direction meant it would be fairly complex from the get-go while its supplementary material and some later developments lead to silliness. Toku's one of those mediums where, like it or not, you need to give it leeway before you really know if you're gonna enjoy it or not. That's just how these series work. Expecting to be totally satisfied and drawn in right out the gate's not possible imo. |

So the best way is that we can hope Zi-O would follow this two shows. I guess most of us are worried it might be the another Ghost :P |

In Tokusatsu, we can contrast with something like Nininger. People really liked the first quarter of that show, but by the end, it was detested (rightfully so, imo, but whatever.) So to go "The first 10 episodes of this 50 episode show suck, therefore the whole show will be a mess and needs a complete rewrite is a little bit of a fallacy. Yes, it's fair to say there are ways to first arc could be rewritten, but would it really be much better? With the need to fit the ridewatch selling, the past rider cameos, and character development on top of that, especially when people are still on a high from Build and Ex-Aid. Quote:

I think the reason I'm so lenient on Zi-O is because I already prematurely decided not to expect nearly as much with Build, who had an experienced writer for a beloved TV show beforehand and the fact Zi-O clearly was going to have a time travel theme which never makes any fucking sense |
