Are Ultramen characters in their own right? Or are they basically just suits?
Before I started watching Ultraman, I was under the impression that an Ultraman was an actually character and, when he bonded with a human, he would continue to talk and interact with him. When I watched Ginga, my first Ultraman series, and saw that Ginga himself didn't talk, I figured that he was just the odd man out. This was further enforced by the Taro Spark Doll, who was able to talk with the main character.
Reading up something about X though, which I had only seen a few episodes of at that point, I found out that X is something of an oddity in that he regularly talks with Daichi. Is it true that, once they bond with their host, an Ultraman pretty much has no character? While I've seen more Ultraman series recently, Ginga(S), X, Orb, Mebius, in all of them, with the exception of the before mention Ginga, either have the Ultra speaking with their host or they themselves are the Ultraman. Having started Gaia a couple of days ago though, its a bit...disappointing to go from actual characters to an Ultra who only grunts. |
It depends on the series. The Ultras themselves almost never speak, but there are some shows where the human form is actually the Ultra himself in disguise (off the top of my head, this includes Ultraseven, Leo, 80, Mebius, and Orb). So in that case they do have characters, just in their human guise. Most of the other shows have them be more of silent guardians that the humans can summon, though.

That's kind of disappointing. Is Taro an Ultraman that takes a human disguise instead of a host? I remember him talking in Ginga and, to a lesser extent, S.

Since Saburo Shinoda hasn't reprised Kotaro/Taro since the show ended, Hiroya Ishimaru is Taro's designated voice actor and has been since Ultraman Story. |
Ginga talked. Just not a lot.

Yeah it definitely depends on the series. I still think the original UltraMan took over as Hayata for the entire series in Hayata's body till Hayata came back at the end. Though that one is open to interpretation.
