A helpful quote from archdeco over at over-time
"For those of you just waking up, we found out that Subaru Kimura will be playing Kamen Rider Vice. Kimura has recently made a number of racist posts to social media, including appearing in blackface and mocking African culture. When confronted over it, he deleted the posts and blocked anyone that brought it up. This is not a cultural mishap. Kimura was born in Germany, he is fluent in English, and he's spent some time in the US, even appearing on Broadway. He would have known exactly what he was doing." A lot of relevant context here, this is just a snippet but you can read the whole thing in the announcements section of their discord if you're interested |

Maybe Toei is trying to appeal to American racists? /s
More seriously, I'd have to think long and hard about this if I was in a position to give Toei money (even indirectly), but as things stand nothing I do will matter one way or another so I'll probably just watch Revice and put this out of my mind the same way we all forgot about Touma's actor doing... whatever it was he shouldn't have done. Along with any problematic things I notice in Kamen Rider itself (we all know this show isn't great to its female characters, for starters) and wish were better but won't drop the series over. If anything, I might feel even less guilt about watching Revice unofficially than I do for other toku (since I can't watch most of it officially). Yo-ho-hoi! |

the only thing I agree with is that instead of trying to forget about this he should've apologized. no shit he's a garbage person but I'm not gonna watch revice's inevitable awesome moments and think to myself "damn, too bad vice's va is racist". that's just fucking stupid LOL
gonna be totally honest - hate the guy all you want but I find it very easy to detach voice actors from the characters. I honestly think it's delusional to drop a show before it even starts or allow your enjoyment to be affected by this. the guy has landed way bigger roles than kamen rider since doing the dumb shit he did and he's bounced back. WAY bigger people than him have done dumber shit and bounced back. trying to cancel someone over some silly shit they did in the past is such an american thing to do. if it doesn't reflect in his work and he hasn't done or said anything stupid since then, I see no reason why it should affect you or your perception of the series and its characters. and of fucking course not you aren't impacting his paycheck by pirating this show anyways. this franchise has had on-screen actors doing silly shit that are harder to separate from their characters than this. you aren't condoning or supporting behavior for enjoying their work. I myself absolutely adore Vic Mignogna's voice acting, but I am still 100% convinced the allegations against him are correct and that it's a shame. |

That's an obsession strictly driven by 2000s social medias era grown-ups interested into digging into anyone's background to search for any tiny (or big in his case, no belittling it) bad moves someone does. Not saying his attitude should be overlooked. That's a bad example and he should not do that. But c'mon raising forks and saying "I don't want him in the show" ? from a community full of nobodies (including myself in it) watching shows illegally ? That takes the cake. I hope for people being disgusted to the point they don't want to watch the show (totally fine with that. That's the right attitude to protest actually) that they won't dig too much into any show or movie they liked from when social medias didn't exist. Because they'll be flabbergasted by all the stuff they find about the actors or producer or I don't know who that were role models before |

I just hope that there won't be a group of people who'll harass any fansubber who does Revice or fans who watch it because they equate that to supporting the guy, when he's literally one dude out of like, a bunch of people working on a show. And because of the fact that fansubs in and of themselves are already not directly supporting the show.
Like I do think this is an important topic and he shouldn't be doing that at all (and I wish they had chosen someone else), and I'm glad that there's a good number of people who aren't going to be like what I fear, but knowing the internet, there WILL be people like who I fear that'll come up. Because like, watching/reading something does not equal supporting a person 100%. Like if someone like Takuma Terashima can keep getting roles after the shit he did in 2012 (one of which was Ultraman Taiga), it's not a big stretch to think that someone like Vice's voice actor can keep getting roles. Though I'm not really sure if Terashima ever actually apologized for it. |
Its not fun :( can we just make a thread about tokusatsu's cast scandal or anything and move the problem there? Let's just focus on the show guys.

I will say, I think the people freaking out over "cancel culture" are overreacting just as much, if not more, than anyone saying they won't watch Revice because of this or that they wish Toei would hire someone else for the role. But I'll spare you all that soapbox speech.

If we're talking about 5 year olds then yeah they probabaky won't ever notice, but if we're talking about kids 10 and up a lot of them will probabaly look him up and follow him on social media, I don't think thats unlikely at all really I grew up in the early 2000s and even I would look up the celebrities I liked as early as when I was like 8 years old, and so did most of my friends, it was already common then I think this is the exact sort of situation a lot of people are worried about, even if he's not physically in the show being a Kamen Rider means there will be a chunk of kids who associate him with being a hero, and that just feels kind of gross I'd agree that it's unreasonable conceptually to expect toei to care what any of us think, but it just feels overall weeeeiiird, while I get why some people can shrug it off, I also get why this is enough for others to not even feel comfortable pirating the show It's just a very specific situation, I don't think anyone has an achievable solution on our end of things, or answer that'll work for everyone, so it just kinda sucks EDIT: I agree this probabaly deserves its own thread or it'll totally overwhelm any other talk about the show from here on |
I’d agree on moving it to its own thread, though I think we’ve all more or less said our piece.

Anyway... Looks quite good, although I'd like to see some alternate forms before I give my verdict. I hope it doesn't look good enough to buy a whole 'nother year of Sodo.
|
My only complaint about Revice is the color-scheme. Another Anniversary Rider, another Pink-toned Rider. I guess this is going to be the norm now?
|
Seeing as the two riders are split into different names: Revi & Vice, are we gonna get some Ultraman R/B vibes on them?
Like Ultraman Rosso + Ultraman Blu = Ultraman Reube? |

Was he? |
Not as blatant as the others, but he was. Ex-Aid celebrated the 45th anniversary of the franchise as well as the 60th anniversary of video games IIRC.
His point doesn't check out anyways because we have other anniversary Riders that aren't pink. |

Edit: I stand corrected via post made while I was writing this post. Thank you Chasing. XD |
Speaking of that, how exactly is Revice the 50th anniversary when it's only the 32nd series? Was the gap between Showa and Heisei really 18 years long? Somehow I always got the impression it was shorter.

The original Kamen Rider ran for almost 100 episodes, for example. |
It took its first hiatus after Stronger; then constant hiatuses for everything after Super-1 (aside from RX airing after Black)

In all honesty, I really find the push for demons in a Dino-themed show pretty weird. I mean, it’s bad enough for voice actor to be racist, but the entire show is pushing for the hero to make a satanic pact with a demon? Granted, I feel like the term “demon” is being used loosely (kind of like how Oma Zi-O is commonly translated to demon king, when the actually meaning is more like evil dictator or cruel tyrant, and for some reason it’s been pretty common nowadays to describe general monsters as demons for some reason), so hopefully it’s more like the Imagin as spirit-beings than straight up demons. And it may end up with Revi just forming a rocky partnership like Ryotaro with Momotaros. Pretty weird that working with demons would be pushed as heroic though when not too long ago there was an entire episode of Zenkaiger dedicated to promoting that it’s good for kids to study the occult.
I’m definitely going to wait to see the actual show before forming an opinion, but it’s still pretty creepy if this ends up being the case (especially when the theme is dinosaurs?). Hopefully it’s more like the Imagin. The designs are absolutely amazing! Also on a random note, it’ll be really cool to see the Decade form!! I’ve been hearing conflicting information where someone has said that it using parts of Decade’s suit, but others said that it has Decade’s shape but Revi’s colors. Looking forward to seeing the forms!!! |
Kamen Rider and toku in general's no stranger to using stuff like cults, rituals and demon pacts in their stories. If anything it's par for course.

https://tokusatsunetwork.com/2016/05/15793/ Dinosaurs and Demons are a strange mix from a distanced perspective, but since dinosaurs are essentially "terrible lizards" from a historical perspective, then one could say that an ancient evil and ancient creatures are part and parcel with each other. Also, think of how the official synopsis reads too: "Deadmans is an organization that worships demons. Through the use of mysterious ViStamps, monsters called Deadman are born from within humans. Fighting to protect his family from Deadmans’ clutches is Ikki Igurashi. He himself has a contract with Vice, a demon that lives within Ikki’s body. Together, they transform into two Kamen Riders: Ikki as Kamen Rider Revi, and Vice as Kamen Rider Vice. Together, they are Kamen Rider Revice!" I'm not sure which "Ancient and Evil Entity" will be used to make this so-called pact, but many different mythologies and religions have a personification of evil, so the one they use may come across as an amalgamation of multiple sources, or as a general metaphor for evil itself. Wouldn't surprise me if the protagonist actually renounces the evil that the deal was made with and ends up fighting that evil in a climactic battle. In many ways, this does echo the mantra of the Showa Era in "Using The Powers Of Evil To Fight Evil" and how Riders were originally tragic figures who could easily have been manipulated into fighting for evil, but they escaped or were freed prior to total manipulation and have the free will and human heart to fight as a warrior of justice against those who changed them rather than as a modified weapon of evil. As to the Imagin, they are essentially futuristic spirits who take an imagined form, but they're also viewed in the vein of a genie. Momotaros is also themed after an Oni! As far as Zenkaiger is concerned, Magine and the kids like the supernatural. In this day and age, that's not all that surprising nor shocking. The main concern with the episode is in seeing whether a supposed school haunting is genuine or not. Tokusatsu takes a neither here nor there approach to the portrayal of demons as monsters or monsters as demons or demons as inherently evil. In many ways, it depends on which Toku you happen to be watching at the time. |
True, but that literally was only with the villains. Golgom and Shocker had those elements, and they still pop up even in modern rider (like with Asmodeus in Senki) but Rider itself never portrays those as heroic.

Ya know it would be easier if toy catalogs hadn't gone off the rails on us, we'd know what we're dealing with in new numerous KRs.
Seeing T-Rex motif of Revi & Vice, will there be a triceratops? a pteranodon? stegosaurus? brachiosaurus? ankylosaurus? parasaurolophus? Anything to introduce all kinds of dinosaurs into the series like Dinosaur King & Dinozaurs! And those "ViStamps", seem odd choices for key items. Like what kinds of stamps will they introduce? |
The impression I get from what we've heard so far is that Vice might represent Ikki's "id". In other words, his most basic and primal instincts manifested into a physical form. Vice has been described as being comedic and hotheaded, and it's also been said that Revi has to step in and reign him in, which gives me the impression that he might be a more serious character (as opposed to say, Aruto or Touma) and might represent the "Superego". It even makes sense looking at their suit designs. Vice has a wild and savage look, while Revi is more streamlined and tech-y. Plus the main locale for the show is apparently a Genetic Research facility, so it wouldn't surprise me if Ikki is meant to be fairly intelligent.
And there's FOR SURE going to be an upgrade form where they both merge that's simply called "Kamen Rider Revice". |

Now that the dust's settled...
Revi and Vice look great! Pretty sure we are getting an Ultraman R/B situation here, heck the synopsis has a focus on family. Also, I remember someone on the "Create your own Kamen Rider" thread pitch a two Riders as the Main Rider. Imagine that overlap! (Though your idea was pretty cool, if you're reading this.) I'm curious to see what their forms look like. The story sounds like a classic Showa style story, very reminiscent of early Kamen Rider. It's also giving me Akumaizer 3 vibes, which I'm loving. I don't follow too much on Japanese writers and such, aside what I hear from other people, but it's exciting to see how someone fresh to Tokusatsu handles this season. Either way, everything looks great! |
