Questions about Garo
I saw the first anime of Garo that came out, it was amazing. The second was trash. So I decided to try out some live action.
I'm pretty sure I started Makai Senki, but I have a few questions. First, Do seasons work the same? Where a season is technically it's own series, and each one is separate from the others? If not, did I start the right makai senki? It's where Kouga just became a knight, and he was marked by a sorcerer I guess and doesn't have long to live? (Only 2 episodes in). What are the absolute BEST Garo series? I saw people say Makai Senki was their favorite so I check it out, and it seems cool so I'm gonna finish it first. But any others worth adding to the pile? I'm a hard core new-age Kamen Rider fan. No so much Sentai. W, Gaim, OOOs, Amazonz - those are my jams. |
Makai Senki is a sequel to the original series.

Yeah, you should watch the original series first.
The first 2 seasons are the best ones. |
Let me see if i can explain this a bit
The Original and Makai senshi, both feature Kouga(he's been a knight for a while before the first season started, he became a Knight for the Senate when senshi starts) and company, but they have different story lines for each season. Although you might want to watch the original season to understand some of the backstory for a couple of characters. Third series, takes place a bit way in the future, or an alternate dimension depending on who you ask. There's some debate, since most of the technology seems a bit more contemporary. It features different guy as Garo with a character named Ryuga. Now I personally enjoyed but some people find it off putting because it feels different than the previous 2. Makai no Hana, features Raiga the son of Kouga. And he's not a carbon copy of him he has his own personality and quirks, although the butler Gonza still around. the fifth season brings back Ryuga, and honestly is pretty much the most plot driven of the series so far, well consistently as far as the individual stories go. Although Ryuga does get a bit over shadowed by the main villain just in terms of personality. There's also a sixth series that aired recently, makai retsuden. This is an anthology series that had stories that focused on various side characters in the Garo universe. So you might want to waiit on this one until you checked out a couple of the different season. As for the best, well that's kind of hard to point out. Each season has it's own strength and weaknesses. For the first season there's an arc that starts when they introduced this one character is introduced and people say that made that season. on the flip side, both the third and fourth series had main characters that barely got any development if any. Seriously season three had had a team of three Makai Knights, and outside of Ryuga I don't even know the names of the other two outside of their Knight title, I kept referring to them as "Glasses" and "HLB". My advice, finish Makai Senshi, is a good series I would recommend it as well. And then go back and watch the original series, it has a bit more of a horror vibe to it. and again you'll get some of the backstory for some characters. And them for the rest, maybe sample a couple of episodes to see if they're something to your liking. |
In addition to what scikaiju listed, there are also a few movies that spin off from both the Kouga and Ryuga shows, as well as a six-episode miniseries focused on another Makai Knight called Zero. Most of these take place between the main seasons of the show, occasionally serving as epilogues or prologues.

You can sum it up like this:
Saejima Timeline: Garo (season 1), Byakuya no Maju (tv special), Red Requiem (film), Kiba Gaiden (v-cinema), Makai Senki (season 2), Soukoku no Maryu (film), Tougen no Fue (film), Zero: Black Blood (mini-series), Makai no Hana (season 4), Bikuu (film) Ryuga's Timeline: Yami o Terasu Mono (season 3), Gold Storm Sho (film), Garo Gold Storm Sho (season 5) Makai Retsuden is an anthology and as such, contains characters from multiple series/films ect. There's also Garo: Ashura which is a tale about one of the first Garos. A new tv series about Zero called Zero: Dragon Blood will air next week I believe. Films featuring Ryuga's Garo and Raiga's Garo are called Kami no Kiba and Gekkou no Tabibito respectively. It's unknown when they'll be released. |
Something that I think is worth mentioning is that the female lead of the 3rd and 5th season, Rian, is the only one capable of actually fighting. All the others hold purely non combat roles. This doesn't mean they're bad characters or anything like that but because she can be right alongside Ryuga, the Garo of the 3rd and 5th season, during fights instead of waiting on the side line, I think it makes her more interesting then the other female leads. That and I personally liked her character more.
