Kamen Rider Revice Episode 4- "Not Enough Love- A Dangerous Devil Is Born!" Discussio
Ikki finds that he lacks certain skills required for Kamen Riders, while the Deadmans find a new way to make powerful soldiers.
Watch SuperHeroTime Via Livestream!! Check out episodes as they air on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block now start at 8PM EST on Saturdays! |
Huh, you know I gotta say, in terms of like overarching narrative it didn't really hit me till the end of this episode when Ikki gets his full load out. But Episodes 1 through 4 make a real good starting arc for Revice. Like yeah we're in the First Quarter, but we basically spend 4 Episodes with Ikki fully getting into the Rider Groove so to speak.
Also it's so weird that the mom is still in the hospital, like, usually they just brush that off as a quick fix. But it's a nice way to change locations and stuff. |
Sugihara delivers with the action! I also liked the bit where when Ikki transforms, Vice just turns around and sits down, chilling while an emotional moment is going. That's hilarious.
Edit: I don't think Daiji is Evil anymore. Producer comment on today's episode was wondering where Kadota was and the one who stole the Evil equipment used Kadota's card. Ohohohohohooh |
Nothing too special to say about the episode.
On the positive side, that's kinda what I wanted to see when the show was said to be about family. I want to see siblings kinda clash together with their ideas about things. On the negative side. The CGI. plz no. Stop it. I understand the want to be more creative to not be redundant but not at the cost of 2000 Playstation 2 graphics... |
Very standard fare episode. My little gripes are only that the mom and Ayaka got together pretty quick, I was suppose a little bit of berating from Ikki, but ah well.
Some few stands outs. The Bat Vistamp is actually already in George's possession and most likely complete. God, how many belts is he working on? Kadota is strangely missing here, too. That's one evidence for our two suspects for Evil. Daiji, since he knows where the Bat Vistamp is, or Kadota whom is missing and the website has the producer teasing us about it. I kinda hope it's Kadota, since I kinda want a little more build up to Daiji becoming a rider. I like that little part of Vice and Ikki in the dark just talking, with Ikki admitting that Vice may be right. Sweet scene, I wish they'd use Vice like this more in the future. Ikki disappearing from the picture, which is actually extremely odd considering this is mostly a tech-based season. I'd have thought this would be a thing that happens in Saber! But in terms of the meaning of it, I wonder if they're going to pull a Blade out of it. The more Ikki uses Revice/collects Vistamps, the more Vice fuses with him or replaces him. The suited Ikki in the opening may seem so. It'd be a neat spin on the classic Kamen Rider trope. We do know that Vice still has ulterior motives and isn't still completely on board with ikki, considering that last part and him just completing ignoring the part where Revi tries to stop Ayaka and just chill at the back. Edit: I'm liking this family themes going around, as well, actually. Something I forgot as well is the show dives in other aspects of Families. I know it may be a bit tough for their target audience but I wouldn't mind if it tackles stuff like divorce, abuse, and orphaned kids. The show already doing parent neglect gives me a bit of hope. https://i.imgur.com/94hdwHF.jpg |
George really flexing with that collection, huh.
This series has been a pretty strong start and I'm glad to see it continue; not much I can add since my thoughts on the show tackling the idea of imperfect families are pretty consistent with everyone else! |
I liked this episode. Story and character development are on point, and the Ptera Genome Henshin sequence was pretty darn great.
I'm really glad that I can enjoy watching some Kamen Rider again. |
This episode proved that Vice can be used for emotional moments as well. Very nice. Although this may be where I stop watching for a while to recover from toku burnout. Looking solid for a 50th anniversary show so far despite my personal issue with the demon theme.

Man, you do not get a lot of toku shows that feel this... "complete", I guess, this early on. Like, this episode absolutely blew me away with how thoroughly it explored a ton of themes that are clearly going to be central to the show going forward. Revice already knows exactly what it wants to be about, and it's benefitting from that clear vision by giving us some unusually tight storytelling. The development for the guest characters is great; the development for Daiji is great; the development for Ikki is great. The action is Sugihara. (He really loves watching characters fly through CG cities for some reason.)
Revice is setting a very high standard for itself, and I really hope it keeps it up. |

Again, IzuSubs translation for the henshin texts:
First transformation to fight the Kong Deadman: Vice: By the way Ikki, is love tasty? Ikki: We’ll talk about it later, alright!? Vice: Okay then~ Let’s go wild and get this over with! Ikki: Don’t go crazy, alright Vice? Vice: Okeydokey! Ptera Genome henshin: Vice: Wow, we’re tearing through the air here! But it’s kinda fun! Ikki: Someone’s life is at stake here! Vice: Still raring to go when we’re falling I see! Ikki: We’re gonna save her! Vice: You better gimme some love too once we do! Ikki: Then hurry up and Genome Change already! Very brief text when transforming into Rex Genome mid-fight: Ikki: Sorry Vice! We’re going back to Rex for a bit! Vice: You’re kidding! Transforming back into Ptera Genome: Ikki: That was close… Vice: Hey, that hurt! Ikki: Alright, we’re through! After her! Vice: Okay! |

But yeah, there were several points where this just didn't feel like Episode 4 at all! Ayaka telling Revi that not every family is happy is pretty much exactly what I brought up last time, but then the episode goes in an unexpected direction by showing how Ayaka's mother's failure as a parent isn't unique to her. Ikki has also been failing his younger siblings, in a vindictive way towards Daiji, coldly calling him out on his flaws while being ignorant of his own. In this episode, somehow, Vice is most moral of the two protagonists, giving a justiFaized scolding to Ikki for how mean he's being to his siblings. Maybe that's what the scene from the OP actually means, that Vice adjusts his morality to contrast Ikki's. So a devil can act as a good conscience in certain situations, it would seem. Ptera Genome references my favorite Rider, favorite dinosaur and favorite Machine all at once! Ptera is a Stormbird, which I died to many times on my first playthrough. Very strong opponent! And what an awesome debut Ptera Genome got! For as much as I've been enjoying Revice's story so far, there are two things I've been missing from Saber. The first is Mei. The second is CGI action. Well, here's some CGI action, as Revice fly through the city after the first Phase 2 Deadman and man, that was an awesome sequence! Yet another reason why Ptera Genome is going to be my favorite for the foreseeable future! I also love that Revice get their equipment in a briefcase. That's so Faiz! :D |
So, what was up with Ikki fading away in that photo? Are we working on Den-O logic with transformations or something? I'm quite curious.

https://i.imgur.com/JylL9nY.png I saw somebody suggest the significance of the theme song's title being a palindrome is that it represents things having two sides, and I really like that idea. I don't know if that's the explicit intention behind it or not, but it absolutely fits what Revice is all about, and that same theme comes across very strongly in this episode. There are a lot of people who have these two equal and inseparable parts to them that are complete opposites, yet the same, that also meet in the middle. You see it with Ikki, whose desire to help his family just as quickly becomes an excuse to ignore his brother's requests. You see it with Daiji, whose strong sense of responsibility creates this impatient undercurrent of frustration at his own inability to act. You see it with Ayaka, who lets her longing for familial affection be twisted into causing that same family pain. And you even see it with Ayaka's mother, who loves her daughter so much, she forgot to show her daughter any love. And I think what this episode does so well – that really illustrates what that interview with the producer that was mentioned in the thread for the premiere was talking about when he said Hanta Kinoshita's writing doesn't leave a bad aftertaste despite the weighty nature of the material – is that it's stressing how, inherently, there's at least as much good in the bad as there is bad in the good? All those characters I just mentioned have these flaws they have to confront, and it's genuinely kinda ugly stuff when you stop to think about it, but they're allowed to work through it and come out on the other side better people because of it. I only vaguely know what point I'm trying to make here, but, I don't know. The drama in this one felt extremely weighty and well-considered. That look on Ikki's face in the aftermath of the fight in the middle, where everything has gone wrong, especially, really hit me in the gut for something this early in a show. It's saying so much with so few actual words. |

Literally spitballing here but it's fun to think about. |
Really emotional episode. I'm surprised they're covering such heavy topics this early in a season

As a show with family theme, now Ikki faces an opposition of, the opposite of how his family get along, which is a dysfunctional family. Though I wonder how actually close Ikki to Ayaka (Oketani, not Imoto) before if Ikki doesn't seem to know fully about her dysfunctional family. I know that the parental favoritism had happened since long ago, though probably it can be Ayaka hiding to Ikki about her family or such. Still though, tfw Sakura's portrayed by Ayaka Imoto, and that she's a karate practicioner, and that she had a friend named Ayaka, and that Ayaka (the character)'s actress Seiko Utsumi was the one that is stated to be able to do karate irl...
So the claim of Ikki protecting family is meant to show that he's the type of the person to not skipping steps, he's someone who'd Start small and work his way up. Him prioritizing to protect family doesn't mean that he wouldn't care about others, for his case it's about knowing that he won't be able to accomplish everything, and it's not that all realistic to expect himself or someone to alter the whole world or its interlocking systems altogether. I'd think it's good to show that realistic doesn't mean negative traits, where the right way should be caring about family (or any loved ones) while being ok to be apathetic to any others, probably due to some audience trying to use fiction as fantasy escape, to live freely without regard of society around, wanting to only care just about certain things against the society's expectation to care about others. It's a nice mix of realism and moral, that Ikki is grounded and focuses on what he thinks he can like his family priority, but doesn't mean that he won't have the decency to help others if he can, where he said it himself that he'd be there if Deadman shows up. Kamen Riders aren't omnipresent though, the location of the Deadman needs to be told to him, which Fenix would have more... and that'd mean Genta is.. useful for this! :p The strife between Daiji and Ikki did happen, but so far, despite some people speculating that Daiji will turn similar to Micchy, Daiji gives me an Ichijou vibe here, he believes in the serious duty of the soldiers (Fenix) to protect the people, which'd mean not letting civilian with no real (there is, but a really humble one, not standing out from anything to just follow along with his family) motivation get involved, even if they have superpowers. Though that's the reason of him trying to get Ikki join Fenix so he'd be an actual part of the group having a actual public safety role. I'd admit that due to people speculating Micchy, I found Daiji's outburst to Ikki being pretentious at first (it reminds me of Micchy calling out Kouta for telling others about the secret, or Daiji calling him out that his actions lead to Sakura getting kidnapped; which sort of reminds me of Micchy invoking Mai's well-being to persuade Kouta; but does Daiji actually realize her little sister's proficience in karate? Really why I want for her escape to be revealed in front of others), but it seems to be about Ikki's impulsive nature of acting before thinking, and that Fenix is more well-equipped to do the job of fighting off Deadmans. Ikki now did have more commitment to become the Kamen Rider that would keep the citizens safe, like how Yusuke gains Mighty Form after being more committed, which is how they make amends at the end of the episode (still, for now). So it's really Ayaka who uses the ViStamp. I didn't expect her revealing herself openly in front of others instead of keeping herself concealed with the shadowy cloaked outfit (outside of the sandals, which she keeps as civilian). Though yeah she has had a miserable life, her actions also have harmed others like those who watch the concert, which means she's still hold accountable for her actions here which are her own choice. Notably Ayaka's the one to escalate the Deadman threat as well of signing a contract, giving the debut of Phase 2 Deadman, with teleporting ability, and it seems that they're more sentient compared to the beastly usual Deadman (and I guess explains Revi holding Kong Deadman Phase 2 in place), and I finally got what I wanted of Deadmans showing a further corrupted version of the ViStamp users (Ayaka wanting to torment her mom)? And inversely, of course Ayaka being the one to cause damage doesn't mean that Taeko isn't held accountable, both sides share a portion of faults. Taeko's a grounded take of a shitty parent of her deflecting blames and giving excuses of her actions to Ayaka, instead of a very over the top practice (blatantly abusive) that my country's TV show is rife of (and Yuka's treatment in Faiz reminds me of many of what my country airs instead), doesn't mean she's less despicable of having more subtle abuse (depending on the people, can make them more slimy with her vagueness, even if the over the top abusive one can cause more damage). She's also probably the type to crave fame (standard human... vice) to favor the child that can take her to that, Miharu. Though still Miharu's personality was never really shown, like how, only very small thing like reminding her mom that she'll be late in last ep., probably showing that she's dismissive of Ayaka too, but also takes her idol career seriously (instead of being pressured). The resolution is though... uhhhh... the usual extremely quick "everything's instantly fine" due to it not being the focus of the whole series and it only being 2-parter, that Ikki simply convinces Taeko to make up with Ayaka, without any substance (or they show too little via only flashbacks), I mean other than it being done too easily, there are no plausible reason for Taeko to suddenly change for lifetime behavior, when even after the Kong Deadman's rampage, she's still concerned about only Miharu's well-being. It can be to protect herself and Miharu for Deadman's rampage for example, but it's not addressed. And even after they make up, it shouldn't be about how the family's instantly fine now, there should be also the fallout that have to be dealt by them due to the mom's shitty upbringing. It's probably a rather easy choices/solution too of freeing people of being contracted to Deadman just by beating them in battle, when it's presented as something someone can't turn back against (or Taeko convincing Ayaka that she won't care how she looks like, and Ikki previously trying to reason with Ayaka instead too). Though this still shows that George is utterly chaotic, presenting the solution of Rider Kicking them with glee, thriving on violence albeit the end result would prevent further violence. The one who convinces and signs Ayaka's contract, Aguilera, finally goes to the scene here directly, in a different outfit. I guess they saved her for bigger stuff compared to Olteca and Julio before, of being the one to present contracts and Phase 2 Deadmans. Like the other 2, she also persuades the ViStamp users to do her bidding, and though she carries it in a calm and affable manner like Olteca, there's still obvious maliciousness behind her smile and joy she presents to others. It's a show about how upbeatness can turn someone menacing instead, and it'd portray Aguilera's complete ego to accomplish tasks without much effort, which means she won't treat others seriously, constantly taunting others, potentially to create a demon out of them figuratively, knowing that they won't stand against her power and/or charisma. Seems similar to George's style of speaking, and probably would be the evil counterpart to George in that case, if George is a good guy at the end anyway (him in this episode responds to Daiji's request more seriously, to guide him to update instead of mocking him). She'd even literally step on others (obligatory "I wish it was me in Ikki's place") as if they're not there... t̶h̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶I̶'̶m̶ ̶s̶a̶y̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶c̶a̶n̶ ̶b̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶u̶p̶ ̶u̶n̶f̶o̶r̶t̶u̶n̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶v̶i̶e̶w̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶M̶i̶s̶o̶r̶a̶ ̶f̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶B̶u̶i̶l̶d̶,̶ ̶w̶h̶o̶ ̶l̶i̶t̶e̶r̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶w̶a̶l̶k̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶B̶a̶n̶j̶o̶u̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶e̶p̶.̶ ̶3̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶l̶i̶t̶t̶l̶e̶ ̶r̶e̶g̶a̶r̶d̶.̶ I guess it's seen here why Sakura claims Ikki can be dependable "at times", even if it's a genuine praise before. She seems to not think highly only to her dad, but also to Ikki here, as she reacts poorly to Ikki's excuse of being there and his denial to Ayaka, and moreover Ikki making bentos. which I'd draw a line that, it's unnecessary for Sakura to be upset over that. It's tough dealing with a tough and hardened type (dunno if Sakura wants to act as the Wakabayashi of the Igarashis), but I'd draw a line of being upset at the bento, it'd be unnecessary (it'd be better if she explains about limited resources or such). She cares a lot for Ayaka though for more than just being someone to hangout in her call, and probably is softer to others in general compared to her family with her greetings and courteousness to the other Oketani family. Probably the one that's an act is the relatively hostile approach to her family (still dunno if it's actually her being softer to other females while being rough to males though), if judging from Ayaka (Imoto)'s words of her being "kind" but "puts cool act as she's an adolescent", still something that has to be worked on though. Yukimi's still in the hospital... really her treatment takes a very long time or Revice doesn't use timeskips. Yukimi's words need to be conveyed to Hiromi too (probably Daiji can do that after eavesdropping and being co-workers at Fenix), who is also impulsive and did hurt others by unwittingly creating Deadman. At best scenario though Hiromi may be another similarly heroic Rider like the main one but more minor, like Tezuka in Ryuki (to Shinji), though that's usually done in shows with many number of Riders where they're mostly morally ambiguous. Vice finally has diminished role here, and not without Ikki getting minimized like last episode, but still shows negative traits that he feels entitled to get love for some reason, that you have to work your way of gaining approval from others, though Vice being viewed right by Ikki seems to imply a more subdued version of him after ep. 2. Still can talk yet about the vital yet unknown moment in the ending with Ikki fading from the picture. The Ptera form's special ability seems to be the Rider form that provides a huge vehicle, while the Rider itself didn't have many other than hopping around. The CGI's still questionable, but that applies to all KR series. The fight still portrays the monster's menace well though, with the damages from the rampage of Kong Deadman Phase 2 being prevalent. The finisher, again, seems to be the Ryuki type (Alternative's Final Vent) where your vehicle spins rapidly in impact to the opponent. Though the Faiz motif seems to be shown in Vice being a vehicle (like Auto Vajin), not much of Faiz-motif abilities like Mammoth's rail before though, probably the super-speed like stuff to save Miharu that resembles Faiz Axel. Speaking of Mammoth, the AoE capability is used well here to take out the swarms of the Giff Juniors at once. |
Alright, I’m officially sold on this show. Narratively I am really enjoying everything that is happening, and this episode showed that it was willing to show some real depth to both its ongoing main characters with Ikki and Daiji and with more minor people struggling with their inner demon of the week. Ikki has me especially excited, since we already can see he has some surprising issues going on beneath the surface.
The scene at the end with Ikki disappearing from the photograph was interesting. Since it happened right after signing the Fenix contract, I wonder if they are trying to go for an angle where Ikki progressively sacrifices more and more of what he cares about so that he can fight more effectively, losing sight of his original self. |
I’m caught up with Revice and I’m really enjoying it so far! Ikki is giving Aruto a run for his money as the best Reiwa protagonist, and Vice, while being hit or miss with me, hasn’t been as incredibly annoying as I had feared from the Saber preview. I don’t have much to say about this episode specifically, aside from that I like Revi Ptera and could take or leave Vice Ptera, and holy crap that rider kick ruled. Also George is me if I got to design rider tech.

Hmmmmm, debating if I should make this first post a Revice Mega Review cause I was too lazy to do it the other 3 weeks. I'll probably just edit it later once I've actually got my thoughts collected.
Before I start reviewing the episode, let me just get out the way how much I love the Phase 2 Kong Deadman's design. While the Kong themeing present in phase 1 is a little lost, with phase 2 looking more like an orangutan or Mr. Burns in his gorilla chest vest, I like the newly incorporated Fourze-esque elements like the white skin jacket(?) and the Nadeshiko blue eyes. More importantly I love the subtle yet explicit Gentarou themeing behind phase 2, specifically the skin jacket(which could definitely be his trademark coat) and monkE hand horn thingies slicking back it's hair Gentarou style. It really makes me want to dissect Julio and Olteca's Deadman forms some more and see if I can spot any Tendou and Takeru themeing. Speaking of Fourze, I gotta say this episode absolutely had the soul of a Fourze one, specifically the Gemini Zodiarts two-parter. While it wasn't the central conflict of the episode it was downright manly tear-jerking to see Ikki realize how he let Ayaka down as a friend and do what he could to rectify it as well as fight so hard for someone he cares about. But that same trait is exactly the driving force behind the secondary conflict in this episode. As many other users have pointed out, an apparent theme of the series is that human traits aren't inherently "good" or "bad', but can be framed as such depending on the situation, and this episode made sure to put Ikki's devotion to the people he loves in both lights. As an older brother myself I hate to admit it, but Daiji was right on the mark when he said Ikki was using family as an excuse to not sign the contract. Working at the bath house full time and donning the driver when a Deadman shows up is convenient for Ikki cause he can stay within his comfort zone and be there "when they need him" when in reality he needs to be ready at any time, and every second he wastes getting from place to place could be another life lost. In typical middle child fashion, Daiji recognizes that his brother simply wants to fight for everyone he loves when in reality he needs to fight for everyone he can. It's giving massive Uncle Ben energies, and I gotta say I'm a fan. I guess I'll stop here cause there's nothing else I could really bring up without parakeeting. I hope I did good for my first real KR episode review and didn't sound too much like a "guy who has only watched boss baby" guy. |
If Revice is set in the same universe as the other Rider shows...Do the other Riders get royalties from the merchandise shown in George's room?
On the other hand, I can't imagine Fruit Jesus needing royalties, you know, being on another planet and all. |

I pretty sure Revice is in same universe with other Riders especially because Ikki and Vice are appeared in Saber Final Episode.
|
|
I'm not sure where I heard it from first, but most of Vice's quips are improvisations from the voice actor instead of being written into the script, and... man, I haven't been able to stop thinking about that because it really really shows. 90% of it is just plain unfunny and desperate and reaching Power Rangers levels of "we can't shut up for two seconds or else kids will turn off", and it's honestly a little distracting? Like, in this episode I actually had a bit of trouble following what was going on because Vice's interjections really made it so there was just too much happening at once.
Which is a shame, because otherwise a fantastic episode! Really starting to see the strengths of both this writer and what the actors do with this material; it's clear what such an infusion of fresh blood from a completely different section of media can do for a franchise. A lot of Revice feels familiar but at the same time communicated in a way that's distinct from most Rider seasons I've watched in the past, and with this little mini-arc of Ikki becoming Revice over I'm really excited to see what developments come next. Really fun show! |

Late review, I need to plan these out better...
Revice is doing a great job handling the family theme, though I do admit, they could have pulled off the mother and Ayaka's big moment a little better. Other than that, I like how they're tackling so much in so few episodes, which reminds me of Build, and that's great. The action, while the CGI could afford to be a bit better, was still entertaining, especially love the dynamic of the switching Genomes throughout the fight. I like how they're handling Vice here, not getting too in the way whenever a big moment comes up, but still livens up the screen without being too overbearing. Love how he did Momotaro's pose during the Mammoth standby. And George's Kamen Rider collection is the envy of collectors everywhere. Next Episode: Evil shows his mask, and Kuuga/Lion Genome shows why he's king of the concrete jungle. |
