Uchu Sentai KyuRanger Episode 3- "The Man From The Desert Planet!" Discussion
The Orion arrives at a new world under attack by the Jark Matter, where the KyuRangers meet a young man with mysterious powers. Who is this newcomer, and why does Champ recognize him?!
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
So what are the chances Over-Time will change their subbing for this episode?

For example I prefer Overtime's ZyuOh subs for how they translate "ohja" and how they didn't pepper everything with mild cussing. |

Even the Founders of TV-Nihon hate TV-Nihon, they all left. One they make lots of mistakes they don't even notice. Two, they shouldnt keep terms like Nee-san untranslated. You want a translation or you watch it raw. Three, Its obvious how bad they are when they translate a show Jyuohger when everyone else in the world call it the correct name "Zyohger" Four, sadly, although it might have changed now, the staff and their fanatic members are very good at insulting people because they are not primary english speakers or their genetic situation, and if you dare tell the staff about a mistake they have made they will tell you to go *beep* yourself... My older sister knows them since they started... they used to be good... But yeah, if you want to go watch badly translated Jyuohger, suit yourself... I rather watch quality subtitling like Over-time does... And I stop my ranting now... episode 3. was very good |
I don't like TV-N because they're literally the prime example of terrible fansubbers. Like they'll leave entire phrases untranslated, even when it's EASY to just use an English word (like for Magiranger they use "o-baka-chan-tachi" instead of just "idiots") or use the English version to keep a joke (in Den-O they leave his final attack as Densha Giri, but the joke is that it's a lame name because it literally means "Train Slash").
One of the worst though is when they pretty much translated an important line in Gaim (spoilers if you haven't watched it) that this blogpost can explain better than I can. Like I get it, people can like what fansub group they want, but I just think they're bad. I mean, I understand that Over-Time gets a little crazy with translating things (like I'm not a big fan of them translating Karo and Daikaan as Menasters and Malistates, even IF they're pretty good puns), but Over-Time has a lot more accuracy. |
On the subject of Menasters and such, it's also weird, because they've changed their translations specifically to match romanizations in the past, like how in Go-Busters they changed sub-space to hyper-space because that's the translation the show itself was using. Of course, that was literally a change from episode 1 to 2, but still.

And that, children, is why you should just leave proper nouns alone in translation whenever possible, especially in a franchise that's prone to using the language you're trying to translate to for exotic appeal.
...What? Am I supposed to come up with some convoluted method of justifying the actions of someone I happen to support even when they're wrong? I'm not a politician. |
Outside of subbing group issues... xD I thought that this episode was very interesting indeed. Having the orange ranger be the loner out of the group with a very mysterious vendetta against strong opponents is quite a twist indeed! I hope that they take a little while before he becomes a part of the team.

This episode pretty much lines up with my thoughts on the previous ones: some good ideas, lackluster execution, fuck Lucky (in stereo). I know we're only three episodes in, but this show is already shaping up to be one where everything focuses on the Red Ranger. It's bad enough when there;s a small cast, but we have so many characters this year that it seems a waste to focus extensively on any single one of them, even if it weren't the most annoying one.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. I know their subs are terrible because of honorifics, but I'm a guilty pleasure when it comes to flashy subs. Though back then when Kamen Rider W aired, I prefered Order of Zeronos's flashy subs. |

Maybe at this point I have to accept that Sentai is basically Red and his sidekicks. If that's the case then what's the point of having 9 Rangers then. |
Oh look, an episode that wasn't complete shit.
Shame it couldn't muster anything past mediocre. 100% honest: This episode's tolerable quality just puts into perspective how bad the last 2 really were. And that's not a good thing... Anyway, for an episode that focused on Champ, why did he spend the entire climax laying down? Here: Champ gets beaten by Stinger, Lucky comes in and saves him last moment. Lucky gives inspirational speech to Champ. Lucky and Champ both work together. Boom. Episode keeps the arguable main character relevant, as well as shows off Red. Anyway, this episode sucked. Stinger is basically a shonen anime rival except in live action. I'm awaiting his sappy bullshit backstory to "justify" him being an asshole. Lucky is still very, very annoying. I hate seeing the team basically job to one villain but have Lucky be able to stand toe to toe with him. Commander is cute, but I hope he actually becomes interesting, because his joke of not having his head in the situation will lose it's charm quickly. |
Eeeh, better than the first, worse than the second IMO, but that's more due to the characters involved being less interesting/entertaining than anything else...
|
Remind me Why we need 9 ranger if one of Kyutamas power is freeking copy of itself (damn two lucky red is freaking) nightmare, So far Orange ranger is the only ranger that really have a skill...
I dunno about the complain of kyorenger but when i watch it i don't feel any problem like this series.. Maybe Daigo is not like Takaharu or Lucky in my book |
It was okay, but that's about it. I kinda hoped the commander would’ve been a bit more serious, but that's obviously not the case. I think he’s fun but I wish they would’ve handled him more like Doggie Kruger, a professional leader who's not above making a good joke every now and then.
And while we're talking characters - they’re really underwhelming so far. I know we only watched three episode so far and even good seasons take longer to establish what a character is all about but I'm afraid most of the Kyurangers will be defined only through their comedic traits. I'm trying to like Hammy, I really do, but once a character says something remotely strange I can already see the camera panning over and that actress will just have to muster her terrible fake laugh again. It's not working for me. Let’s not waste time talking about Lucky, he's space trash, so what do we have left? Champ got a little focus this episode and it was okay but I kinda wanted a bit more. The blue wolf dude already got his focus so he’s worthless now, same goes for Balance and Naga really. I hate how annoying Naga is now, they’re taking his lack of emotions too far only to get stupid comedy out of it. Balance is still Balance so that’s okay I guess, and I have nothing worthwhile to say about the rest of the characters. Except Raptor. I kinda like her. I hate that she’s a costume, I would’ve preferred an actresss with robot makeup, but she’s likable at least. She works great with the commander which is a little plus, and she was rather funny in this episode and in the preview. The Sailor Moon homage was neat. Also, Stinger is cool; simply because he’s an obstacle instead of yet another Kyuranger they can just recruit on the spot. I’m interested to see where this goes. Lastly, here’s something this show does right in my option: KyurenOh and the big monster battles. The robot of this season is better than ZyuohKing, he looks nicer, I love the cockpits and the way they change limbs instantly, that’s fun. And then the big fights: This show has the advantage space shows usually have, meaning that aliens who can naturally grow or are already big when they appear are much more of a natural obstacle which warrants a big robot to fight them instead of the same old "Make my monster grow"-shit. Like, I hated the Naria scenes in Zyuohger. Every time with this shit. No one wants to shoot the damn coin out of her hand and be done with it? Okay, cool… So yeah, action is okay, robot monster fights are the best so far IMO, the rest is pretty bad. It has potential for sure; let’s hope this show can make it work soon. |

I really want to like this show. Seriously, I do. But I'm already getting bad vibrations from the third episode even though this ones better than the first two.
I won't focus on the negatives because that has been covered already. Instead, let's look at the positives. + They have massaged to keep the space opera feeling still. Even if the fight took place on Generic Toku Beach, somehow, the illusion of fantasy. + SasoriOrange wasn't immediately recruited. + The stupid line by Lucky about giving up in revenge actually drew a chuckle from me. It was bad enough to be good in my opinion. + Raptor 238 has surprising depth. Frustrated Secretary robot who nonetheless is idealistic isn't anything groundbreaking but it feels so in Kyuuranger. + KyuuRenOh was already one of my favorite Sentai robots but this episode even gave us transforming enemy robot ship! Which also looked cool! Kyuuranger has the best robot fight scenes in my opinion. |
Wow. The continued negative reaction to this show stunning to me. I loved this episode as much as the first two!
I'm gonna be avoiding these episode discussions from now on. Catch you in the other threads. ;) |

If the negative reactions annoy and threaten to take the fun out of a show for you, I know they have that effect on me, stop reading them, it's a good idea. Maybe you can come back every 5 episodes or so and see if the people who didn’t like it dropped it. |

Well I thought this was pretty solid. Probably not as good as last week, but still way better than the premiere. I liked how they fleshed out Champ. I didn't like how he just kind of laid on the ground until the mecha action started, but at least he got that much. I really like how they're playing up the whole idea of Stinger being an evil-ish Kyuranger for at least a bit. I'm a sucker for stuff like that, so I'm happy to see it. Especially since he's doing this of his own will rather than being coerced in some way like Misao back in Zyuohger.
Also, apparently they're heading to Earth next episode? Hopefully they don't stay there too long. It'd be a real shame for Kyuranger to lose one of the biggest points in its favor so soon. Quote:
No? Okay... Anyway, I'm thinking there's a chance once the whole team is assembled the focus will get more even and right now they're just using Lucky as a sort of anchor for the viewer. Which, now that I think about it, helps explain why everyone's hatred of Lucky is interfering so much with their enjoyment of the show. Huh. Quote:
I guess I'm just not sure what people are expecting here? Pretty much every Sentai I've ever seen takes a couple episodes to really get going, so I have trouble really caring or worrying when something isn't immediately going right. The characters especially seem pretty much on par with any other show by its third episode, for how much of a point of contention they've been. I think if Lucky, the guy who's somewhat unfortunately meant to be the audience surrogate, were just clicking with people, the show would suddenly seem way better. Quote:
|
Well, it's simple.
Lucky is the main character. No dancing around that subject. It's just how Sentai is. People don't like Lucky. They find him obnoxious and his more...Charming traits, one could say, are quickly drowned out by his less charming ones. Especially in these early episodes where he's basically a walking signal flare that says lucky more times than the average person blinks. So a lot of people are left with a show following a character they don't like. All the little issues go from otherwise mild annoyances into giant problems with a blaring klaxon simply because they're not enjoying themselves enough to ignore them. |
Yeah, I guess. The really sad part is that I don't even really like Lucky that much. I'm just not horribly bothered by him for whatever reasons.
That's actually why I think the second episode was better than this one. Here's the thing: Lucky, despite being the main character, also isn't the main character. He's sort of a generic, heroic dude, and his characterization seems deliberately geared less towards being able to carry a show and more towards helping the other characters shine. When they use him in that fashion, making him feel more behind everyone than in front, I find he works pretty well. All three episodes so far have more or less attempted that. The premiere undercut itself by making the dude the episode was "supposed" to be about, Garu, only show up like halfway through. This week undercut what could've easily worked by making the somewhat inexplicable decision to have Champ sit there twiddling his thumbs or something while Lucky fights Stinger during the climax, once again making the character who's clearly supposed to be in focus go out of focus. Last week, however, I think handled its plot extremely well. Lucky is there to kickstart the plot, and to teach Naga a lesson about friendship simply by innocuously mentioning it, rather than giving a big dramatic speech. That's it. The episode was about Naga and Balance and it FELT like it was at all times. It felt like something when Naga decides to stick with Lucky. It felt like something when Balance decides to go back and rescue the both of them. Here? I guess Champ understood what Lucky was saying? But he also decided to take a nap for like 4 minutes right after that scene (after the dramatic music swell and the flashback to thematically important dialogue, no less!), and then at the end his one line of dialogue to wrap things up is basically "yo f*** that Stinger guy", so... um, okay then? It's such an easily salvageable thing, too. Either have Champ get over himself, like you suggested, and have the big climax with Lucky AND him, or, if you wanted this to go unresolved so you can play up that tension for a while, which they did, don't make it look like you're going to resolve it. I thought episode 2 was genuinely pretty excellent, but this week has shaken the faith it built up a little. I really hope these sloppier episodes turn out to be the exception and not the norm in the long run. |
Ehh this episode was ok, just ok. New problems that came with this episode are . . .
Xiao: If the situation did not involve trying to stop a planet from exploding and all but two of the rangers being poisoned then his comedy routine would be fine but it didn't which kinda makes him appear as a dumbass to me. Also since he is suppose to be the commander as well makes it worse unless he can be serious. All this has me VERY worried because he will be my favorite color of ranger. Poison: How did stinger's poison affect Balance and Champ? Sorry but that's just stupid unless his poison can also be corrosive. Kyutama: So wait not all Kyutama are for Kyurangers to transform? Well that sucks because cancer is probably one of the attack ones then. Also where did they come from and how did Xiao get them? Kyutama might be one annoying problem I have with this show. As for the good Lucky using Gemini: I loved this part only because I could hear people screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" and that made me happy. Raptor: She seems to be the only Kyuranger I will like the most which is surprising for me. She is the one and only, Raptor Moon! Yay! With Zyuohger I was already hooked by episode 3 and had more of an idea what the rangers were like as characters. But Kyuranger I only been watching in hopes it does get better while they do need to make up on their characters. While I may be calling it too early, I do feel like the Jark Matter will be boring villains like Zyuohger's. Oh Fish how did you feel about Onari from Ghost? I ask because if you liked him then that might be why Lucky does not bother you as much as he bothers others. |

Raptor is fun.

While feeling rushed, I can say I hate this episode the least. One thing is they REALLY need to have some kind of consistency with the giant Monster of the Week. I mean just SOME kind of foreshadowing to the base transforming would have been nice...The Jark Commander saying they were ready for the tricks or something...with ep 2 it was the sigil, and I still have no idea where the monster came from in episode 1...eh...
I like what I see from Stinger. Seriously, please keep him as an antagonist for more than 3 episodes. Obviously he is going to join the team eventually, but draw it out like they did with Chaser in Drive. What I think this show needs is to move to the two episode format to be honest. Allow the story to have some room to grow. |
After a pretty lame first episode, I've been enjoying this show a ton over the last two. Lucky is still kind of aggrevating as a lead character (and I'm sure it'll get worse once he gets power ups) but I do like that the show has sort of been toning it down a bit. As this episode showed, he's not just a guy who screams for no reason, he's got his own beliefs about things (like Stinger not being a bad guy) and sticks to them even against the desires of others. This works so well when Lucky being correct isn't related to some asinine matter and I hope they manage to keep it that way.
Various tidbits I enjoyed about the episode include the stellar action. I think the show has nailed the fights, at least early on, and I have a lot of fun watching them. While I'm not a huge fan of robots, I do enjoy a nicely composited shot and KyurenOh walking towards that tower as seen from behind was such a well done shot I had to watch it a few times. Stinger's actor also seems pretty good! He's got a voice that fits his character and pulls of the angry persona very well. In the near future, I wanna see more of Sparda. I feel like he's the one member of the team that's had the least amount of focus and screen time and it bugs me because I think he could be a fantastic character based on his description. |
We have our main cast. I feel this is a good time to chime in my thoughts on Kyuranger.
The Good: I like the effort they are putting into the worlds and at least trying to make it all a bit off world looking. It's not the best, but commendable. Also the single most interesting background thing is Beet Buster in an afro and painted gold. The character has a proper name, so I'm kind of expecting more from him later. More so than the designs, I really like the use of the mechas as personal spaceships. It makes them very useful when not combined. Plus, this is the point I realized they look a lot like Cowboy Bebop ships and that pleases me. There's even a swordfish. Speaking of swordfish, I kind of like Spada. He's a one dimensional stereotype, but one I haven't seen in a while and there's just something about his delivery of these dumb lines that makes me laugh. Balance and Naga are quite enjoyable. Balance is that type you always feel is about to backstab you, but he's charming enough to get away with it. Naga meanwhile is like Data from Star Trek TNG if Data had emotions, but didn't know what to do with them. I like these. A lot. More please and seeing as Beet Buster is coming back for the next Superhero Wars, can these two please meet Jin and J? Please? Much like Balance and Naga, I feel Raptor and Xiao play off each other very well. Xiao is absolutely terrible and I kind of love him. Raptor is the real brains around here. These two are like Zapp Brannigan and Kif if Kif also wanted to be a Sailor Scout. Again, more of this please. All in all, these things make me really, REALLY, want to like the show, but... The Bad: Hammy is Ed from Lion King. I want to like her, but that forced laugh is making that very hard to like her. Champ is just kind of there even in his focus episode. I like his background and revenge plot, but it feels like the B plot of the episode where it's suppose to be the A plot. The monster designs are kind of weak and forgettable. The intro theme is bland, but the electric guitar instrumental version in the show is actually pretty good. That outro will be in my nightmares. The PAIN: Lucky. Goddammit. You're going to ruin this show. So they go and make a Sentai series with 9 rangers within the first 4 episodes and more comings...and they decide to give this insufferable fool all the lime light. All the complaints have been made by others already. I can't really add anything here. There's a good chance I might not make it to double digits in this show and I guarantee it will be because I got tired of Lucky's shit. Goddammit, I really want to like this show. Here's hoping the not episode preview isn't a lie and really is about Raptor and Lucky is only supporting cast. |

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of Lucky screaming.
I may also be alittle drank after tereating this like a game. |
I think this episode, and the series as a whole might suffer from the same problem. There's just too much going on. Not only do you have to worry about nine rangers, you also have to worry about the villains, Xiao as well as whatever side characters that will inevitably be brought on. Kyoryuger worked because even though there were ten rangers total, four of them rarely showed up. Here, everyone needs to be there in every episode and I just feel like the show's attention is too divided. And the big hangup here is that this is something that realistically cannot be fixed due to how the show was set up. I hope they can find a way to balance everything; but I think it will be very hard.
|
God I can not stop laughing at how much Champ shrinks when he transforms.
Anyway, I'm honestly not sure how I felt about this episode. There were things I liked, but then the mech battle at the end felt tacked on. I know this is beating a dead horse, but seriously, is there some law in Japan that says if a Sentai show doesn't feature a mech battle for one episode children are going to stop buying the toys? Also, I can't wait for the big misunderstanding where it turns out that Stinger was trying to save Dr Anton from Jark Matter and Champ came in when all was said and done. Oh, and wow, the transformation sequences and intros were like on high octane. You would think at the speed they are going this show was only going to be like 15 episodes. Hey Toei, how about slowing down and actually NOT introducing each new ranger every episode? How about developing the first batch of characters BEFORE you introduce another ranger or two? I mean, I fell like the stuff that happened in this episode should have been like episode 10. It just doesn't make sense from a narrative stand point to cram it all right away and then have like 25 episodes of filler. On the positive side, I like the commander and from what I recall, he is voice by Red Racer's actor. That is awesome. Oh, and Lucky didn't speak as much this episode. |
So I watched Over-Time's subs first and then just watched TVN's. Yeah, they changed the meaning pretty much. But I'm very pissed when it comes to naming. I don't give a damn about "Futaba", why can't they just use "Gemini"?
