Super Sentai Legend Wars for iOS
I recently started playing Super Sentai Legend Wars on iOS, and although there's a smattering of English in the game, the majority of the game's text is in Japanese.
I'm enjoying it, but since I can't yet read Japanese, a good portion of the game's mechanics are opaque to me. Some heroes have skills, for instance, but it's not clear to me what their effects are. There are also red and yellow "gems" the player can acquire that provide active abilities and passive bonuses respectively, but their text is also fully Japanese, so I rarely know what they do unless it's super-obvious. Is anyone else playing this? If so, have you found any translation resources or English gameplay information other than the thread on that other Sentai-related message board? Alternatively, do you have any good strategies for ad-hoc usage of Google Translate when you can't actually select the text in question? Also, I'd be happy to share what I *have* learned about the game, so if anyone else would find it useful, please let me know. * - As an aside: when I was trying to find a way to get my hands on Kamen Rider Atsume, I ran into a brick wall, but when I researched Super Sentai Legend Wars, I finally stumbled upon a resource on creating a Japanese account with Apple in order to download from the Japanese store. I can share if anyone's interested, but I'm hesitant to post anything about it to this thread unless I get a thumbs-up from our moderators. (Basically, I don't want to accidentally violate forum rules.) |
I've been playing since launch, but on Android. We get to avoid all that making a Japanese account nonsense. I was happy to grab SS:LW since Kamen Rider Storm/Transcend Heroes went right down the crapper. As far as I have found that thread on the other site is the only resource for the game's english language players.
As far as Google Translate goes, if I need to translate something and someone over there hasn't done it already I just screenshot it and then use the GT app. You have to be careful, though, to only select the text you want. If you highlight a whole mess of text, the OCR translation function gets a bit wonky. Granted, as a machine translation it has its issues even when you highlight perfectly. It's good for gem translation, though. |

There's a Google Translate app? I'll try it out. (I'd been worried about multitasking with my older iPad since it already has trouble with the game, but it just occurred to me that I can use my phone for the translation.) |

The GT app has been pretty helpful for me with the gems, both with figuring out what they do and with how to get them. When you look at them in their section the text overlay is where to find them. Most of them are from the team specific events, though. Some of the red ones unlock for purchase when you hit a certain hero power level. (The Hurricaneger one I want is 30,000! Madness!) I was glad when they added that text. The app also helped me figure out the daily goals so I wasn't missing any. Hopefully this thread can get a few more people interested. For potential Android players, QooApp is your friend. It allows you to search for, install, and update apps (mostly Japanese, but there are some Korean games there) without having to register a Japanese account. You can link a US Google Play account to make microtransaction purchases after the app is installed. Joooooooin ussssss! |
And ZOMG, the Valentine's event. I'm more than happy that there are pink legend cards, now.
Also: UGH Kyoryuger. Apparently, you can't get the team bonus without the original five. What's the point of even having Silver, Gray, Cyan, and Violet in the game, then? |
Quote:
As I'm not a fan of the show, I doubt I will ever use them. I might as well have pulled blank cards. Two useful cards out of 33. I'm going back to get more, though. I may have missed out on Gokai Christmas but that Legend Gokai Pink will be mine. Oh yes, it will be. Edit: I just pulled the Legend Wolzard Fire from the pyramid coin shop. It's not Gokai Pink, but it's a darned nice card I'll get some use out of. |
Nice! That Wolzard Fire is pretty sought-after. When you pulled the cards you'd maxed, did you at least get any tokens from it? The only team I (so far; I'm still not that familiar with pre-Hurricaneger Sentai) think I'd be actively averse to using would be Ninninger. If I could share my love of Kyoryuger with you, I would. Alas!
I've seen a couple of things (I've been trying to make my way through non-English information on the game) that might indicate that certain extra heroes like Wolzard Fire can (or at least could at one point) sub in for a core member for purposes of the team bonus, but can't confirm it. If so, I expect Kyuranger might work like that, with any five gaining the bonus. On the other hand, they could make Kyuranger the first team to require six heroes for the team bonus. I really wish Kyoryuger worked like that, but as it is, I just can't justify using the heroes beyond the sixth, which is sad, since that's most of my Rare Kyoryugers. At any rate, it's nice that they've handed us something that's a direct affirmation of their plans to add Kyuranger to the game, although I kinda hope they'll delay long enough to get little details right. Also, having never watched Gorenger... Heh! When I first summoned and noticed the tiny heart earrings on Momorenger (Momoranger?), I thought, "Oh, wow, that's sexist," for a fractional second before she pulled one off and blew up Gokai Silver with it. I mean, it's still sexist (I'm reminded of Aphrodite-A's breast missiles,) but the juxtaposition amused me. I also just managed to hit 1500 hero power, so Hero Kirenger showed up in the store for... Wow. That's a LOT of V-Mana. Guh. Much as I want another crack at the Pink Pack, I think my priority now is to save up 800 V-Gems in preparation for the next buy-2-get-1 deal. I'm just loving that I now have more than four Sentai that I can reasonably use. |
Congrats on the 1500 Hero Power! Nice score. I was so frustrated saving up for that Kirenger. Luckily, when red gems start populating in there for sale they only run about 50k instead of 200k.
I've only seen a couple of episodes of Gorenger and I'd forgotten about the earrings. (I have a pretty small phone screen and bad eyes.) FiveYellow and FivePink have them, too. I expect she'll turn up in the LegendFest pack at the end of the month, but I still took another crack at Gokai Pink today. I can handily say it was the worst pack I've ever gotten. 7 out of 10 cards were maxed out duplicate Gokai Blue and Greens. Sadly, eventually you stop getting things in return for packing duplicate cards. I've never paid attention to exactly where the cutoff is, but I'm long past it on those two. :cry |
Huh. I hadn't noticed your most recent post, here.
Something that just came up in chat (surprisingly, there were a few people chatting in English) was to switch to channel 5 for English chat. Hm. Sorry about the frustrating pull! Do you at least get Rare coins when pulling duplicates like that? I finally hit 2,000 hero power, which apparently unlocks Hurricaneger, Boukenger, Magiranger, and Shinkenger. |

Congrats on hitting 2,000 HP! You'll start picking up steam, soon. As I recall it was around there where I stopped feeling quite so tight on my white Vs and I found the events easier to manage. Hopefully you keep that momentum you've got going. I'm just about to hit the next mark myself. (Actually, I hit 6,017 while I was typing this. A yellow ToQger gem for 15k, not too shabby. If only I had more than one ToQger above normal/normal+!) How are you doing in the Gokaiger/Gorenger events? Even my terrible luck at store pulls isn't frustrating me as much as the hard Abyss level. It's at the point where I'm no longer feeling challenged and I'm just getting pissed off. It isn't so much that the level is hard, it's that I keep getting screwed on my card pulls in the clutch and I'm missing killing the last guy by a second or two. As a completionist, I'm really feeling the need to be able to score those gems. Silly, but true. :D |
What's the game like? I've played Storm Heroes, not going in that rabbit hole again...

The poster's cards are pretty unrealistic (he's been playing for a long time and I gather he's dropped a lot of money on the game,) but you don't need teams like that to play. The game is free-to-play, with both the upsides and downsides that entails. I'm mostly allergic to F2P games, but I like this one. I love the attention to detail in terms of poses and special attacks, as well as the game's use of Sentai theme music. You're given a few teams at the start of the game (currently, Zyuohger, Go-Busters, Gokaiger, Gaoranger, Zyuranger, and Gorenger, IIRC) and you slowly build up other teams (by randomly drawing cards) and gain more powerful cards over the course of the game. If you're patient, there's no particular reason to spend money on the game. I haven't been playing for a month, yet, but I've managed to acquire at least basic cards for most teams, and I've built up Dekaranger, Dairanger, and some others into pretty effective teams. If you decide to try it out, feel free to hit us up for advice. Quote:
Congratulations on hitting 6,017 Hero Power! That's amazing! Quote:
Something it took a while for me to notice is that card draws in the the first level of the Void (is it Abyss? I really need to learn to read Japanese) behave wholly differently than anywhere else in the game. Specifically, there is no shuffle when you hit zero cards, and it records the order of your discards. This means that after you hit zero the first time, there is nothing remotely random about your draws from that point forward. Let's say I'm using Dekaranger, Dairanger, Goseiger, and 3-man Gekiranger, and I put send out two Dekarangers first, and only draw one more Dekaranger before I'm left with, say, three Goseigers, Geki Yellow, and Kibaranger. If I then switch to Goseiger, my next priority is to discard not Geki Yellow, but any other Dekarangers I draw, so that once the deck hits zero, my first draw will be the original Dekarangers I drew and any new ones that pop up after the switch. Within a deck or two, you should have continuous full teams, so long as you can remember the order in which you switched teams. (I use 3-person Gekiranger to fill the deck out to 20 cards with only four Sentai, using the extra heroes for Dairanger and Dekaranger. I use them as automatic discards, although I try to discard them together when at all possible, not so much because I intend to switch to them as so they aren't mixed with other teams.) I don't know whether this is the case for the second Abyss/Void level, as I haven't tried it enough times. I initially played the first level so many times, I couldn't figure out why my discard strategy wasn't working in normal and event levels. I also noticed that any heroes you send out interrupt the enemies' action, as does activating the team attack, and the team attack appears to add a flat 10 seconds to the timer. This doesn't seem to work that way outside Abyss. It's definitely not an accident that the enemies move so slowly (which takes time) and that their special attack lowers your heroes' speed. |

I'll try to incorporate this info into my attempts after rollover today! |

Also, I've developed a complaint about the game. I'd been so excited when I started by its use of Sentai villains - Gormin! Buglars! KUROS! Dogold! Enter! Basco! - it I didn't realize I was seeing most of the villain types used in the game. It's like they more or less decided, "Okay, we did ToQger, Goseiger, Gokaiger, Go-Busters, Kyoryuger, and the eye-things. That's enough enemies for a game with dozens of missions." I also got way too excited by seeing Fuwa Juzo on the front page. |
*groan*
Okay, so they released JAKQ and Dynaman yesterday. I'd saved up nearly 900 V-Gems in preparation for the next pack, and pulled the trigger on the 300-Gem bundle. I got a single Hero and the rest Rares, which might not sting so much if the majority of those Rares were duplicates of cards I already have. I didn't get close to completing either team, and didn't pick up any good new additions to existing teams. I got so frustrated I did something I *knew* was kinda ill-advised and purchased the 500-V-Gem bundle of the Shinkenger pack. I was hoping for, y'know. Shinkengers. Rares, Heroes, Legends, I didn't care. There were a couple of other teams I like in the set. What could go wrong? I drew a Legend Gao Red, which is cool, although I'm not a Gao fan. I think the rest were Rares. Zero Shinkenger-related cards. Given the Legend and the majority of the Rares were new cards (albeit for teams I don't care about), it was... less disappointing? I guess any draw in which you get a Legend or new cards can't really be called bad. I realize my expectations are probably off. Most Super Sentai teams are in the game, but I really only care about roughly half of them, mostly the newer ones. Kyuranger aside, it's fair to assume the next several new team packs will focus primarily on the I-think-it's-5 missing early teams. So now, I'm down to a little over 100 V-Gems (earned more from those cards raising my Hero Power,) but I haven't enhanced my existing good teams or made other teams viable. Gaoranger comes closest, but I think it's now Legend Red, a Rare, and Normal cards, so... not quite. Mostly, I feel foolish. I know a Legend Fest is likely next week, and if I was going to drop 800 V-Gems, I should've waited for a 33-draws for 800 deal. At least there are multiple new Events, and I can see myself putting some effort into Magiranger, since I'd like to build them out. |
Oh, my gosh. Somebody posted Excel spreadsheets listing all the cards and gems, including what they do. (This was on the SSLW TH Facebook group.) I have a way better sense of how the game works, now. Apparently, the yellow gems, in addition to being passive, are always minor bonuses (which makes sense.)

Seems like there was a significant update (here rather than elsewhere since it's the only site I can access during the day) today, moving the game from 1.5 to 1.6., and apparently, there's major maintenance tonight (PST) that might well bring Kyuranger to the game. There are a couple of images floating around now of a Legend Shishi Red SuperSkill card, and of Shishi Red, Ookami Blue, Chameleon Green, Kajiki Yellow, and Oushi Black in battle. I haven't seen any pictures of the other four, which may or may not mean anything.
The 1.6 update replaces Zyuoh Eagle on the loading screen with Shishi Red. The V-Mana shop now shows previews of the unlocks for reaching various Hero Power goals. It also looks like they shuffled them around a bit, since I was able to obtain the 8-cost Hero version of Kirenger the other day, and I don't think I've hit 5,000 Hero Power yet, and it's now the unlock for (I think) 25000 Hero Power rather than the 2500 when I think it unlocked for me. I don't know whether any new rewards were added. It looks like they've added new stats to the Abyss (I think maybe the enemies are called Kirisark?) levels about number of enemies defeated against personal best. Also, blessedly, there's now an option to turn off chat completely, so it doesn't turn itself back on the next time you relaunch the game. This was a huge pet peeve for me. The option is in the same menu where it was turned off before, and I believe it's the third button down. It also removes the chat button from the game's main screen. I could be wrong, but it also seems like the game performs a little better and crashes a little less. I wonder if these things are related? |
Thanks for the info! It's a pretty nice update, all things considered. I like that you get a summary of the cards you pulled in the shop now. Unfortunately, it's like rubbing salt in a wound when you get a bad one. Have you made a purchase for the new cards yet? I'm feeling super discouraged today. I'll be glad when it's tomorrow. This Thursday is my nemesis, online and out in the world. Crappy day, crappy day.

I went completely insane and blew almost all my V-Gems on three draws (so 1050 in total, I think.) I didn't screenshot them, but given the randomness of the gatcha, I'm reasonably pleased. The first draw gave me Hero Chameleon Green and Hero Aoninja. The second made me cry YOSSHA LUCKY! when I pulled Legend Shishi Red. I kinda wish I hadn't done the third draw, since the only notable card from it was Hero Bouken Black. I got a LOT of duplicates. Like, I drew Rare Bouken Yellow for the first time (yay!,) then managed to draw at least seven more, so at least I got to find out what happens once you get to max. Seems like the card stops getting better - honestly, I didn't look too closely - but you get 100 Rare tokens instead of 5. I nearly maxed out Rare Kajiki Yellow, which I'm happy with. I'd be delighted by just how many Hero cards I drew - I drew more than I ever have before - but that was dulled a little by all but the ones I mentioned being Aoninja, which I think ended at level 9. I walked away with three Kyurangers, which is delightful, although I got a little grumpy that even though Oushi Black is Rare, I never drew him. (Edit: Yeah, even with the duplicates, these were great draws. I'm going to stop whining now.) Apparently, Rare Tenbin Gold and Normal Hebitsukai Silver can be purchased from the Kyuranger event. Oh! And there's a login bonus of the Normal cards for Shishi, Oushi, Ookami, Chameleon, and Kajiki, plus you can buy them in the V-mana store, meaning they all rise to level 6, and your Hero Power goes up accordingly. Whether it's worth spending any more than 300 V-Gems is going to come down to how you feel about Boukenger, Denziman, and Ninninger. |
In case it's ever useful to anyone, I wrote a guide for the game that you can find here.
|
I just unlocked an event of some kind. The banner has Tenbin gold, Shinken Red and few others. I have plenty of the tickets it says to use, but I keep getting some sort of a notification whenever I try to launch a match and can't. Anyone know what I'm referring to or what condition I'm not meeting? I can snag some screenshot if that will help.
