Ultraman Episode 25 -- The Dreaded Comet Tuisphon. This episode was like two different stories combined -- one, about the titular comet coming close to Earth and causing cosmic wonkiness, the other about the monsters Red King, Gigas and Dorako fighting. Both aspects are good but they do seem a little at odds with each other.
All three monsters are great. Red King is of course classic. He really fights like a puroresu heel in this episode, including putting Dorako in a modified Boston Crab. (He pulls his tail instead of his leg.) Gigas is amazing simply because he is a modified version of the Jamil costume. And Dorako is sort of like a proto-Gigan, being a space monster with hooks for hands and strange wings on his back. Also has some great location shots of the Japanese Alps! (Subtitles back in sync again...) |
Ultraman Episodes 26 & 27 -- The Monster Prince Pt.1 and Pt.2. Also known as "Gomora shows up and wrecks up the place." I never saw what the big deal about Gomora was until these episodes. He may not have the most outrageous design but he is tough as hell and has a really strong personality. He is one badass daikaiju!
Overall the two episodes play like a sort of mini-movie. There's a lot of Gomora rampaging through Osaka as well as fighting the JSDF, like you would see in a daikaiju movie. The sequence of Gomora destroying Osaka Castle was feature worthy, for instance. The human plot, with the monster-obsessed young boy who is the titular prince, was cute as well. There's also a scene where the kid plays with his Ultraman and monster toys, which has recognizable Ultra Q Monsters Gomess and Kanegon on display! How neat! A really fun two-parter with a great foe for Ultraman. |
VR Troopers Episodes 1-3 -- The Battle Begins Pts 1 & 2, Error in the System. Took a break from Ultraman and turned my brain off for a while with these shows. Man, VR Troopers was such a zany show. It's impressive how much the whole thing holds together considering it's Frankenstein's monster like origins. Still holds up as silly entertainment for sure.
Also amazing how a show about super technology looks so danged low rent, heh. :lol After almost 20 years, Battle Grid Mode still makes no sense to me. What's the point? And why does the Virtual World look exactly the same as the real world? I mean, I know WHY why, but still! I still love Ziktor and his Skug-babes in the real world, plus Grimlord and his Virtual Dark Fortress full of his minions in the Virtual World, though. Also odd is that while I really like JB and Kaitlin's designs (from Spielban), I have never really warmed to Ryan's armor (from Metalder). I guess it looks "too different" from the previous Metal Heroes like Gavan, Shaider, etc., whereas Spielban and Diana look more in-line. Still, have to admit I enjoyed myself watching them. Pure nostalgia trip back to freshman year in HS when I would watch an hour-long block of this show and Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad on Channel 11 in NY while working out after school. "Hail Grimlord, Master of the Virtual World!" |
