Toys R Us Weighs Bankruptcy Protection
EDIT & UPDATE: Chapter 11 has been filed
http://news.tokunation.com/2017/09/1...nkruptcy-45777 The end is nigh http://www.businessinsider.com/toys-...-report-2017-9 |
I hate this!!!!!!!
I have literally asked them to bring a store back where I live cause I shouldn't have to go northward for two hours to one of the few in my state! Where I am, they closed the original back in 2002 or 2003. The local mall opened some Express locations around 2011/2012, but the agreements fell through a year or two ago and the last several Winters were without. I believe in Toys R Us and ALWAYS WILL!!! I don't like dealing with Amazon too much for product delivery, and Walmart is a "necessary evil" because of all of the problems in its life (doesn't take much to find Youtube videos slamming their practices)! Walmart doesn't have near the same level of exclusives and collectible memorabilia and Amazon, well.... I seriously hope that a Toys 'R Us Renaissance results from this, cause a world without them is depressing for kids and 20-somethings with more figures than a toy museum! |
I'm not at all surprised by this given the state my local TRU has been in for years. They still have 2009 GI Joe stuff clogging up the place and there comes a point when you just need to stop trying to sell them.
Hell, even barring the local place, their online ordering was pretty terrible. I recall the last time I ordered something from them they sent the bloody thing in a bubble mailer, which is fine for a DVD or Game- but not a figure card. Damn thing was smashed to hell and back. |
I'm shock to see this happen. I think with people just buying stuff online on Amazon, less people are going out to buy things at local retail stores.
|
Eh, I always found them overpriced to be honest. I won't be too mad about this.
|
There's only one within 20 miles of me.
|
|
Oh no.
Now where will Bandai sell their ugly overpriced Zords??? |

Well if they go belly up no worries. There always Gamestop to buy Legacy toys like the Inspace figures lol.

Oh darn. What a problem. It's not like they sell normal toys at $5-10 markups and horde exclusives to justify the higher prices.
I'm so whelmed. |
Hopefully we get the Legacy Shogun Megazord before this happens.
|
I'm honestly surprised that this hasn't happened sooner. Their price gouging is ridiculous.
|
I don't see TRU going away completely though, there's a chance that they might end up closing all brick and mortar stores and being an online retailer ala Amazon.
Even if they do file for bankruptcy today, the liquidation process takes time to go into effect so it's not like we'll see them up and leave overnight. One thing is certain: we'll definitely see some of their less successful stores shutting down, along with the loss of many jobs in the future. That's the thing that sucks the most about this. |
You can still find legacy stuff at Barnes and Noble, last time I was there they had the Ninja Megazord. This is sad but yeah not too surprising,
|
They are blaming Babies R Us...so I expect any free-standing BRUes to shut down first. It's hard to nail down exactly how many there are because some of them are 50/50 BRU/TRU stores. I know my city has one of the free-standing stores...and I think it's one of the first against the wall. The other 50/50 store is in a thriving shopping area and should be safe for now.

I see some people making snarky remarks about TRU being overpriced. Brick and Mortar's are in trouble, if TRU goes down....gmaestop? COme on, Gamestop overprices everything by 3-5 dollars.
TRU has mostly SRP, except they do kind of jack the prices up for exclusives. If TRU goes down, that is a major blow to the industry. Amazon is a monster and TRU helps Amazon have those sales everyone loves to wait on. SOmeone posted above. it is really the Babies R Us...so I am hoping that is it just that. These snarky remarks.....some people just poses little common sense. A lot of companies like NECA, Barbies, Bandai, Jakks...ect would be in a lot of trouble without an outlet like TRU. |
I loved TRU as a kid, who didn't?
As an adult collector though? They're a last resort, their selection for Transformers is awful (to be fair, it's pretty awful everywhere now), their prices are too high, and I hate how many exclusives they get..that never show up or sell out instantly. |

If a place like Walmart goes out of business that'd be a major blow. Plus more and more manufacturers are shifting their focus to online shopping giants like Amazon. |
I don't buy much there anymore but I can't help stopping in at least once a week on my way home from work. I grew up with the place. When I was a kid we didn't have Walmart in my state, and they always had the best selection of Transformers, Legos and video games.
|
Simple solution to this is 4 million people going in and spending 100 bucks. 400 million debt gone
|
Guess I'll have to hurry and see if local TRU has any Bandai toys. I couldn't find any of their stuff in other stores in my area...

NECA, DST, Black Series, Banda's Legacy, Barbies, will have a huge problem then. You think christmas time, you will find anything? You think Amazon will lower the price of toys if TRU is gone? You sir are in the wrong, if you think you have other options like you do now. Ideally when something folds, another store will take its place, but in the reality we live in, the answer is no. Physical stores might go under and Amazon will simply compete less. Less discounts on those toys we love. Be thankful it is the babies r us. But sad to see the PR movie failed. I saw it and it sucked. They should have, 20/20 vision just did an alternate retelling of the original MMPR or maybe even tell the original Japanese version. Instead this insane version where everyone has a criminal record and tries to virtue signal. Maybe they should have been daring, and gasp, use actors in suits and eliminate the awful CGI. Whoever made that movie needs to go. The animation studio, the writers and concept artists. This had such a Michael Bay Transformers feel, and that is not a compliment. |

Malls think that is the solution so piggyback off that idea. Perhaps hire a TRU Santa...in face stop the happy holidays slogan and celebrate like it's Christmas and not X-Mas. |

KB Toys going under had very little effect on domestic retail in the long run because it was very narrow in product to begin with. If super markets like Walmart start going under that'll be the true death kernel for domestic retail. You are aware that all of those manufacturers sell though digital stores like Amazon as well and more and more are starting to see online sales as more important then domestic retail ones? Of course it will, it's primary competition is Best Buy and Walmart both of which have sizable online stores themselves and other online retailers. Funny that you mention lowering prices though because going by that article one of Toys R Us' problems is it's refusal to slash prices to compete with Amazon and Walmart. Physical stores won't go under as long as they're more convenient to buy food and clothes from. EDIT: Thought you were talking about the domestic retail industry not toys specifically. Still that seems to be slowly focusing more on online retail anyway so I don't see Toys R Us as the huge loss you do. |

Sadly you won't be able to find much on them outside of a 15 years-old NPR article. I only know about them because I had one in my town. Point is, they tried what you're suggesting, and it didn't work out like they'd hoped. |
Damn... I didn't know the ninja steel line was already doing this bad. We're already a little over half a year and stuffs already on clearance..
|
They haven't even released the gold morpher yet. At least not where I'm at.
|
How much of a Ninja Steel clearance are we talking about?
|
I remember in 1998 or 1999, they talk about how Ebay and Amazon would replace local retail shopping stores in the next decade or later. It sucks to see Toys R Us go down under, but I had a feeling it would happen.
|
Fuck where am I going to go for Pokémon cards and video games? Theyre like the only store in my area that has any game variety and I'm not driving 2 hours to go to other stores.
|
|
Sad day.
|
On the one hand there won't a toy store in my local area... On the other hand I'm gonna buy bunch of shit at the inevitable clearance sale.
