Kamen Rider Zi-O Episode 1- "Kingdom 2068!" Discussion
High school student Sougo Tokiwa learns that today will be a special day for him. He has no idea just how right that is...
Watch SuperHeroTime Via Livestream!! Check out episodes as they air on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block now start at 8PM EST on Saturdays! |
Absolutely fantastic. Crazy fun fast paced, and already packed with so much. My boys are back and that's what matters most.

Wow what an action pack start to Zi-O. I love how this show gave us a few fight scenes in just the first ep along with all the time traveling.
This show has a mystery to it how did Sougo became King in the future and in what way is he connection to the main plot. I'm hype for the next ep. |
The Sky Wall is still up when Sougo dropped in Build’s world. Also Banjou is still using Cross Z. This must have happened early in Build’s timeline.
|
Sometime between 14-15 given the date on the milk but there is one single problem because of the events of the finale of Build that timeline doesn't exist anymore like at all outside of Sento and Ryuga mear existence

EDIT: It's also the day after Heisei Generations Final premiered in theaters. Quote:

Shouldn't it be impossible to drop by a timeline where there is still Sky Wall since that world no longer exists? Unless Zi-O's Time Majin can cross demension and travel to Build's universe before it was merged into the new world?

That Faiz blaster might have a memory wipe type function too. And it was because they were knocked out of the timestream mid-transit. Though, multiverse theory does typically involve time travel too. The parallel worlds are created from divergent choices. So the time vortex/tunnels essentially run parallel after the point of divergence. Which in build's case is the original mars trip that discovered pandora's box. |
Over-Time has announced on Twitter that they will be subbing Zi-O. Expect subtitles sometime on Sunday.

Oh hey it's the first two minutes of the first episo-…..did everyone just die? Holy chit!
they went dark right out of the gate. Respect. |
Thought the opening will debut next week.cc anyway, watching now and the visual is nice, but I prefer Gackt and rider chip for anniversary vocal. I feel a lot of shonen anime like character tropes and typecasting actors that looks that role. This is what I feel from the opening. It's way too animeish even though people said that abroad exaid and ghost already.

Whoah I love this!
And it brings a tear to my eye to see my boys Sento and Ryuga back again. |
I'm weary about the ninninger writer. Kscn Geiz can either be like specter or banjo depending on the script. I'm sure the future zio is going to be mid season twist or maybe it will be reveal in Christmas time movie war upgrade. Picking a weak hero for anniversary season doesn't seem like a good choice and depending on how much the of a roles the guest play, he might be overshadows since most aren't that enthusiastic consider we see legend forms every year. Still watching it now. Micquality

If only they could bring back the cast members and locations from all the old series and not just the most recent ones. That would be a budgetary nightmare. Regarding the episode, characters are still a little flat and I would have loved it if they had clarified the girl's motivations a little more. It's actually kind of disappointing that the evil Riders aren't the corrupted versions of the actual Riders themselves. Now that would have been far more emotional and made the monsters a little more interesting.

Surprised by the fast pace, but it's not a bad thing.
Hopefully the fact Sougo goes into Build World when the Sky Wall was still around can stop people from whining about Build ending and that the "2 world fusionning was only chosen as an ending because of ZI-O" I'm not a huuuuuge fan of the Egyptian-like BGM, but I admit the mysticism it provides goes well with the time theme. But the real big mystery of this series I want an explanation of already is : https://i.imgflip.com/2h1z92.jpg EDIT : oh yeah I liked also the fun moment Another Build goes "Tennis ! Karate ! not a best match..." xD |
Hope Geiz won’t go fully terminator on Zi-O throughout the series.
|
Not too shabby. I haven't been this invested after a first episode since probably Gaim. I'm looking forward to subs and the next episode.
|
Waiting on subs to get a second opinion but from the raws I'm like... eh...
The henshin style would have been more striking if they hadn't already used a similar technique for Evolt Black Hole form last season. I'm not a very big fan of shonen idiot protagonists becuase they just don't make for very interesting characters and as a result everyone BUT the main character seems interesting. Also without subs I got confused when they went into the series events of Build when they have already confirmed that Build's earth is another dimension to the rest of the series. But if time travel is going to include trans dimension crossing too then that can be a way for them to visit in all the different series. I did really like how the episode started though, this really intimidating prescence of the Evil King Zi-O which makes me wonder how someone like Sogo could grow up into that kind of person. But he probably doesn't... unless the Evil King is actually 68 years old. |
I watched some of the RAW last night and bookmarked it. Today it seems to have been pulled offline.
..so I've already checked Over.Time's site for the subbed version like 6 times today since I woke up. hahaha |

After watching Ep 1.5 Raw
Now it's Woz who mentions Egypt. Guess that will be a recurring theme this season. Seems like this .5 is about names and puns about them. (Geiz and Gates, Evil Zi-O being called "Maou" and "Oma" Zi-O etc...) |
tbh is it bad I Honestly predict Wars to be the villain

Two dozen of different watches and merch, they have to rush the plot since they're promoting the toku veteran/alumi guests as well. It's still a very entertaining toy commercial ad that will trigger nostalgic fans to buy the legend toys. I can see why they have .5. Unlike Saban, they actually paid attention to details and try to give good explanations, but with different writers, it'll be way too confusing to not retcon and over think like 555 story ended with kr4.
|
For those curious, subs are officially up on Overtime!

Like west world. Yeah, the build's part is confusing and didn't think they'll henshin or be relevant right from the start. More build toys and movies coming soon. It's by ninninger writer, which make sense for a experienced writer to writer an anniversary toku, but I kind of want someone new like the writer for build or gaim and maybe kobayashi after amazons. Future Zio is like the wizard from the movie. We have tiga like rider statues now. They're not that ancient. |

Just saw the subs.
Episode felt very crammed in with a lot going on and the main character isn't as interesting as Build was. Still, I did enjoy it and look forward to watching more. |
Just finished the first episode subbed. I like it for the most part. I'm a little "eh" on the lead, but the supporting cast seems pretty great. I like Faiz phone girl and Biff's almanac guy.
|
very fast-paced. I think they blew through about fifteen episodes' worth of CGI budget at once.
That said, I liked it. shades of Den-O definitely. want to see where it goes. |
Calling it now, Sougo is the statue at the beginning and the evil Zi-O is another guy.

Hey everyone, guess what time it is!
https://i.imgur.com/eucEsst.jpg 10:10, according to this dude's face. More importantly, it's also time for a brand new Kamen Rider show, and I love it so far. This isn't anywhere near as strong a premiere as Build's, but that was already an outlier anyway, so I won't judge Zi-O too hard. This is about average (maybe a little better than usual?) for a Kamen Rider first episode, but it was hugely entertaining and set the stage well. Not exceptional, but there's not much to complain about, either. That being said, it's also wall-to-wall setup to the point where I feel like I just watched a 22-minute trailer. I think the pacing would've been massively helped just by cutting out the opening. Don't get me wrong, it was nice to see it, and it looks great, but that extra minute of breathing room is worth missing out on some catchy music and visuals designed to explain the show, something a first episode already does. The writing here is pretty wild and hits like, a million beats in a very short time frame, but to the script's credit, everything checks out. The characters definitely get the short end of the stick, but we do get just enough to get a feel for everyone, and in exchange, the backstory is presented nice and thoroughly right out of the gate. And Sougo even got thrown in a river! I don't actually think that was an intentional reference, given how different the context is from usual, but it's nice to see a classic Heisei trope back. :lol The more "production" aspects of the show are all great, too. The CG isn't awful (which for Kamen Rider is a huge compliment), and I loved Zi-O's transformation. Toshihiko Sahashi's style of background music is perfectly suited to a "big" show like this (although it doesn't help my brain comparing this show to Den-O), and the designs are all nice. I can totally accept labels on everything if it means we get monsters that look notably gross for the first time in years. All in all it was solid stuff, but I don't think it possible to form a proper opinion until next week. Which is another very typical Heisei Rider thing. The premiere gets all the setup out of the way so the second episode is free to actually show you what the series will be like. Right now I see tons of potential in everything, and I especially think Sougo and Geiz could quickly become extremely interesting characters, but that all depends on where things go. I feel like there's this kind of meta dimension to Zi-O, because the character is trying to defy fate by becoming a nice evil king, and the show is trying to defy fate by pulling off almost the exact same plot as Decade. As long as it has an actual ending, I guess it can't be too bad, right? |
I seem to recall episode 1 of Build was also was very fast paced and packed a ton of exposition into like 15 minutes. Build (imo) didn't find its stride until like episode 15 or so.
|
Man, that was a lot of stuff in one episode. I get that the show wanted to hit the ground running, but I think they probably could have cut a lot of this out until episode two and ended up with things feeling less rushed. That said, I generally enjoyed it. As always, there's a lot of stuff and characters that don't make sense yet but we'll get explanations in the coming weeks. I'm not 100% sold on Sougo yet - the whole "king" thing is really weird and makes the character come off as kind of a dick. Tsukoyomi is pretty awesome, though; she reminds me a lot of Hana from Den-O, but with a gun (and hopefully an actress who doesn't quit the show halfway through).
On the whole I'm intrigued, but I hope the show's pacing slows down after the first couple episodes and gives us more time to process what's going on. |
After seeing the episode, I liked it but they definitely rushed and crammed a lot of stuff inside one episode, as Switchblade said. Hopefully the next episode addresses the continuity issue with Build
