Zyuohger Episode 12- "The Elephant With The Short Trunk" Discussion
Tusk sets out to learn more about the human world, and quickly finds himself in trouble...
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
Ah, the oh so subtle manipulative episode that impresses good habits on children. Every season has one, and this one was pretty good.

Was fun. Old dude was kind of a dick, though. I thought they were going for a 'don't judge a book by it's cover' sort of deal, with the old dude throwing people out by what he assumes they're there for, but nah. He was just an asshole.
I thought it was kind of endearing that Tusk was still reading even after all the kids ran off. |
One of the weakest episodes so far IMO. Tusk is the most boring member of the Zyuohgers as is, so I didn’t expect much, but I at least hoped it would give him a bit more depth. Something like Sela dealing with missing her family. And we did get a flashback, but it didn’t really matter or created internal conflict. And the book store owner is just a dick. Like, he didn’t change either, at the end of the episode he’s still a dick.
So story-wise the episode was a waste, it did nothing for me, and neither action nor the comedy were much better either. Oh well, it was still fun, but not as good as it could’ve been. |

Yeah I think I missed the moral in this one. The old dude was just being an asshole...the end?

...After he threw out people who showed interest in his books or had the audacity to be younger than 35 when walking into his store. There's been "You can't change people" morals before, but they usually don't end with the jerk getting a happy ending... |

Yeah, this sounds confused. |
Yeah this episode was....sloppy. I wouldn't say it was terrible, but it wasn't good either. There are aspects that I enjoy, like Tusk remembering his childhood, and him reading to the kids was actually a pretty cute scene, if a little ham-fisted. The monster was a bit bleh, really predictable. I wish more was done with Zyuoh King being taken over, or perhaps that should have happened with one of the team members.
Everything else? Yeeeeah, wasn't too fond of it. As everyone else has pointed out, the Oldman, Oiwa, doesn't actually learn anything. The episode seems to inexplicably think that he did, but he really didn't. He was a jerk and manipulative ass throughout the entire episode for no good reason, and then he suddenly isn't at the end. Because. https://youtu.be/FozX2fNBQKg?t=1h27m21s This could have been handled a lot better. I like the idea of a bitter book store owner and Tusk helping him out. But the owner should have been bitter for different (actual) reasons, it could have just been that not a lot of people come in anymore and he was struggling, making him abrasive. Maybe there's conflict with him and Tusk(like when he bent the book) so he judges him as someone not caring for books or something. Then build upon that with him learning of Tusk's love for books and knowledge, and he becomes appreciative of Tusk's attempts to bring in customers. In fact, it almost felt like it would go in that direction, but for some reason it didn't. |
