"Transform? You?! You're shivering!"
George please, let's not bully Daiji here. Also, I will deem it as canon that George used the FENIX computer to pre-order his SS Ichigou on Amiami. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E_m5UfwX...pg&name=medium |
I was not expecting this episode to be like, a two-parter of sorts in that we have a "mystery" on our hands.
Also I'm legitimately surprised that we're taking out sweet time to get to Megaladon Genome. Meanwhile here we are teasing a Secondary Rider already. |
Also, not gonna lie I'm somewhat starting to get fed up on Vice now. But only when he's making noises while fumbling over. Not so much when he's showing off and making noises.

And did you see Revi's Transformation into his Mammoth Genome Form. They reference the DenKamen Coming Down into the faceplate. And Vice's first words in Mammoth Genomes were "Ore... Vice desu", directly referencing one of Momotaros's Catchphrases "Ore... Sanjou". The Stamping Finish in Remix Mode also directly referenced the rails used in Den-O's attacks. Oh my god, there are a whole lot of references packed into a small package. |

I like when he's bantering with the cast or Ikki, but not when he's off on his own. |

If you're talking about the part before Vice grabs on to the monster, he's thinking out loud about strategy. He's saying that they can't win in a fair fight, so they had better try something underhanded. And being a demon, he's great at that. |
Well played Toei. You got me.
We expected a contract scene to be the first of the ep and we got it, except we didn't. well played. They know what they're doing. I didn't expect we would have a first look at our second driver so early though. Not fan of the design, but it might be a prototype or something at this point. During the first half of the episode I was planning to complain about the deadmans. Because I don't want to see a trio of "do nothing with no background" (except distributing stamps) like we had last year with Megiddos. The fact Julio appeared long in the battle scene made me less upset about it. But the feeling is still here. I'm wondering how he knew Ikki's sister was one of the two hostage girl though. That's not exactly obvious or I missed something maybe. Maybe deadmans are linked to the Igarashi family somehow and know their bond naturally. Small detail, but around 3:00 and 5:20 the soundtrack in the background really looks like one of the Zero-One Soundtrack. Obviously it's not it but the style and the way it sounds is very similar. Also about the next week ep and this ep cliffhanger. Is this supposed to mean that Ayaka girl is the hooded person and gave the vistamp to the guy ? But then the guy took Ayaka hostage ? Makes no sense to me, except if the real target was Sakura, but okay. Hope next week can clarify. |
Two things that I liked this episode.
The beginning of Daiji's secondary rider arc. I'm enjoying Daiji working through it, and I hope to see the suit soon. Gonna be glorious to see it. Setting up Sakura as an active combatant. We've already seen her take on the Deadmans, but consistently doing it and alongside Ikki, yeah, she has this real high chance of becoming a rider. I'm glad for the set up there, you can tell something struck her nerve when the old man said something about the people below. |
I still very much enjoy this show, not because it blows my socks off with unique new things or anything, but because it does the things which made me fall in love with Kamen Rider in the first place so well that I can’t help but smile.
Also, the secondary Rider belt (I assume that’s what the thing is) might be the very first instance that I remember where I see a toy in the show before it appears on magazine scans or gets put up for pre-order at stores. Not saying either of those things hasn’t happened yet, I just didn't see it. |

And going by the line that she can have 2 or 3 more Deadmen, I'm assuming each one will escalate as she seeks more attention (Such as possible targeting her sister). |
The shoes are actually a really clever way for that tease, simply because earlier in the episode Sakura told her something like "they don’t fit you".
Ayaka is completely and utterly feed up with what people expect of her, how she is forced to stand in the shadow of her sister and play along. |
Personally, Vice is an acquired taste. He's like Deadpool, except without cursing.
|
That was one heck of a twist at the end. Although considering her mother's lack of affection for her, it makes sense that she gave birth to the demon (man that did NOT sound right).

After seeing the OP for the second time, I admit liveDevil has grown on me a little. It's no ALMIGHTY, but it's at least good enough for me to not want to skip it or anything like that. The Secondary Rider's Driver is fully revealed and Daiji wants it! He probably wants to prove to himself that he can, after how he hesitated before and got Ikki dragged in to the fight. He's like the opposite of Ikki in that way. Ikki tried fighting alone out of fear of letting his devil loose, while Daiji fighting alone maybe is his devil. Unfortunately, his recent actions on the field have caused George to think of him as a loser similar to Hiromi. Daiji's going to need to prove his worth on the field if he wants to be taken seriously by his superiors again. The red and black color scheme and the design of the Driver look like it's supposed to be used in conjunction with the Spider Vistamp for the default Genome. Remix and Machine Parallels: Mammoth is a Tremortusk. |
Vice doing his own variants on Double's and Den-O's pose and line practically confirms that this will be a thing he'll do every time they do a Genome transformation. I dig it.
Also, Revice henshin text screen translations from IzuSubs: First transformation during the Deadmans attack: Ikki: How’d this happen… Vice: Heeey! Ikki!? Now’s not the time for daydreaming! Ikki: Let’s smash ’em and go rescue the two of them! Vice: Good to see you pumped! Ikki: Just hold on Sakura! Ayaka! Vice: Ikki’s kinda… Ikki: Let’s do it! Transforming into Eagle Genome: Vice: Come on, come on, come on! Ikki: Shut up! Vice: Come on, it’s bird time! Ikki: Slow down! Vice: Flying feels so good I just can’t wait though! Ikki: Just give me a sec here! Vice: Do iiiiit! Ikki: Don’t mess around too much Vice! Vice: Okay~ I’ll be a good boy and listen to Ikki~ Transforming into Mammoth Genome: Vice: My oh-my, someone looks angry. Guess I’ll put on a face too! Ikki: Vice. Vice: Mm? What is it Ikki~? Ikki: We’re finishing them with this. Vice: Gotcha! Roger that! |
- So I noticed in this episode that the stunt-friendly version of the Revice Driver is squished so flat that the entire back halves of the stamps don't exist, and I find that really amusing for some reason. They just keep designing these things to bulky to film action scenes with!
- I'm really digging Revice so far, and this episode continues to show loads of promise. It's very well-rounded, for one thing. The writing does a solid job planting all these little seeds for tons of larger things in the overall series, without ever losing focus on the moment. The plot hints at some fairly weight themes exactly the way you'd expect from the Rider show about fighting with and against literal inner demons, but they're taking their time building it all up. From the obvious focus on Daiji to seemingly innocuous dialogue between other characters, there's a lot about Revice I feel like I'll be looking back on eventually and appreciating the cohesion of it all. - But like, all that said, this episode is still just a fun surface-level romp with an easy to digest hostage situation and tons of wacky one-in-two Rider action, and that's what makes all that deeper stuff click into place. I mean, Daiji's feelings of inferiority are neat and all, but really, if I don't also get to see two guys pretending to be a mammoth running along train tracks that float in the sky on top of that, it's like, why are we even here? :p |
Ughhhh... Ok, it's official, Vice is unbearable for me!
I can't stand him. While I found his antic unamusing, I can deal with that. What I can't is the fact he blurts out every unfiltered subcouncis thought Ikki has, effectively telling us exactly what he feels before the logical part of his brain tempers that. And that blows! Worst offender, the moment where he makes lovy dovy eyes at the friend. It was obvious enough, but Vice making a heart with his hands makes it annoyingly obvious... And it feels so ungodly lazy! To me it drags Ikki, who's a fine character on his own, down into a boring piece of wood with a thought balloon and I hate it! It turns another solid episode into medicrati. |

I'm sorry to hear that you don't like Vice, but thanks to your comment I like him more now :lol |

I personally like to dig into characters' heads a bit to pull out their personality, and get annoyed if I get it told this easily or when there is next to nothing. But glad I made him better for you :D |
In this show demons are not otherworldly satanic beings but 'inner demons' that manifest from people's negativity. For Vice to be the only demon in the show that can talk (so far anyway), he might be a really 'advanced demon' (for lack a better term) that might have matured more than a regular Deadmans (which, interestingly, Vice did not turn into when he manifested in the real world). So Vice seemingly blurting out Ikki's unfiltered thoughts is incredibly interesting. It's almost as if Vice is a split personality that Ikki unconsciously developed to deal with his bad emotions; he did give up his dream of being a soccer player for the sake of his family's bathhouse after all, who knows what else he might have given up.
On that note, we already know that Daiji will become a secondary rider, and we've seen that he's prideful so that trait might be foreshadowing the presence of his own demon; we've already seen his self-loathing at being 'weak' and Ikki turning into Revice instead of him does not help at all, possibly allowing for further maturation of his inner demon? I dunno, but this does give credence to my theory that Deadmans are just immature demons while actual demons are those that have fed off their host's negativity for longer periods of time. This makes me wonder if Ikki will at some point accept his bad feelings and instead of ignoring them, acknowledge them and move on; to attempt to improve so that he can mature as a person. I have no actual certain way of knowing if this would happen, but if this actually does happen, it would be cool to see if this results in Revi and Vice merging together for the final form; as Ikki accepts his negative feeling and resolve to move on (this IS a kids show so I expect them to say something like 'negativity is a part of life but what matters is moving on in life' or something along those lines), this resolve is reflected in the final form for an actual 'Kamen Rider Revice'. I know that in the Saber production details, they said that contrary to Heisei's 'everything-into-one' concept of final forms, Reiwa's approach to them would be 'base form but upgraded', and honestly the idea of Revi and Vice merging into Revice seems to fall under that. Well, this is all just pure speculation anyways without any actual way of knowing if this will happen, but it would be pretty cool if it did! |

Yeah that was basically my speculation on Vice's intelligence as well. The Deadmans are like walking concepts, they're the devils that exist in people's hearts and unleashed willingly in to the world by those people with the desire to rampage, so the Deadmans' will is just an extension of their hosts. But Ikki wants to keep his devil locked away, dissociating with that part of himself and therefore giving it its own identity as Vice.

Are there any interpretations out there as to why they chose to pair which animal with which legend Rider?

I think with this episode helped me finally get a decent grasp on what this show’s angle is and I rather like it. Focusing on how people repress themselves so that they can be presented as how they ideally want to be viewed by others and society, resulting in their inner demons manifesting? I really like that and think it will prove fascinating, especially with a character like Ikki as the protagonist, who perhaps isn’t as happy as he would like to pretend he is. It seems like a good theme for the show to tackle, very topical.
As fir Vice, I rather enjoy the little bundle of id, and think he has a lot of potential to have a very satisfying character arc. |
Ikki and Vice kinda remind me of Eiji and Ankh's relationship (initially) where one is fully aware that he's being used by the other, but is clever enough to force him to play nice.

I question how Daiji will obtain his inner demon.
After being unable to wear the Revice Driver, he just couldn't handle it due to his hesitation. He'll need a certain motivation to keep him going in order to shake off that burden. Showing resentment towards Ikki, it's only a matter of time. He'll be going to Vergil's path in his desire for power in order to match up with his brother and will be giving into his negativity that will allow him to unveil the demon within him. |

So here’s how unobservant I am: I didn’t notice until this episode that The Eagle forms are modeled after Kamen Rider W. I actually really like that; the tributes are there but subtle enough to fit in with Revice’s existing aesthetic instead of being really garish and clunky armor pieces like Zi-O. I’m even down with the animal thing now, because it means that, unless the colors really give it away, I won’t know what old Rider a new stamp is going to evoke until it happens. Adds a bit more fun to the use of new powers (for now; I assume that the show will stop doing this well before they get to every Rider).

It took long time for the sub to come out...
Now, some more screentime with the other family members except the still hospitalized Yukimi, with the hint of Daiji going on the deep end. So he indeed does have several issues within himself. But still not known yet if those issues are ordinary flaws or dark flaws, it can be the former if it's just him feeling useless while also having a fear about turning into Rider based on Hiromi's experience, or if can be the latter if he truly has jealousy towards his big brother, potentially scheming to make himself prominent while driving away Ikki or such. And even jealousy isn't necessarily a dark trait if it's played up as it making him merely insecure, and he was trying to get Ikki join Fenix like before, but there's an implication of him having negative trait, albeit expressed mildly too, in him blaming others (as Vice pointed out) in Ikki not signing Fenix for having the girls kidnapped. At the very worst case... he can turn into the next Micchy, turning depraved due to jealousy to the main character. Speaking of the girls, for another Igarashi sibling Sakura, it's seen miles away that she'd kick Namio Yoshida's (the thug) ass due to her being martial artist, though she still got 'kidnapped' at the first place due to the reality that, for a normal human, being a skilled martial artist doesn't make you capable of surviving a bullet to the head (and she's far away from Yoshida that time). I'd wish her escape would be revealed to both of the Igarashi family and the Deadman, especially to blow the latter's ego. Another scene did further establish her as having no-nonsense and strict personality, though Yoshida deserved it, her father also suffered for it, and even Ikki sort of... praising him as dependable as if he's probably sort of annoying to her too before (not counting girl friendships like her to Ayaka). As an action girl she'd be another one with tough and hardened personality like most of that type in KR series before... though the bio claims she's trying to act cool but is a gentle one (would like to see some change, but that's my personal stuff). Like Daiji's inner demon (figuratively), the established Shiawase-Yu being evicted for the town's urban redevelopment project finally appears here. I guess I was too impatient. Ikki's still provoked by Vice as ever to yell shut up at the real estate agents, but like others said it can just be Ikki's hidden dark side to have more sadistic thoughts which Vice exposes (to the audience, unfiltered)... a testament about how there's no limit in what's going on your head, humans can think completely unprovoked there. I got a feeling about the real estate agents being the Deadmans from their slimy demeanor, pulling some political shit of claiming their actions as being done "for the future", which'd make them untrustworthy. Shiawase-Yu did have some success if the revitalization plan outraged the customers then. Genta continues to be a cringy comedic relief with his latest eccentricity being tissue-pulling challenge, and even the hyped scene of him trying to do something regarding the revitalization plan.... being stamping the contact after a hyped scene of him probably punching those agents. For the victim of the week Ayaka Oketani, now the series tackles heavier stuff of parental favoritism. A return for the J-Drama feel? It's a depressing and horrific scene of Ayaka's call being outright ignored by her mom Taeko, who favors her celebrity child Miharu, and she's her idol manager too in Koakuma Rendez-Vous. She even claims she drives Sakura and Ayaka only on Miharu's way. Horrific because she's in a kidnapping scene (well less so with Sakura being there, as a longtime friend she probably must've known her martial arts proficiency), otherwise it'd be just a depressing one. The hooded figure at the Deadman's base, there's a heavy implication of it being her, shown in the jeweled sandals the hooded figure wears, which was the sandals Ayaka took at the mall. It'd be a plot twist, of Yoshida not being actually the ViStamp user, but being an unfavorite child can really take emotional toll on them, which makes sense for Ayaka to lash out in form of becoming a Deadman servant. I guess this is a show of how the cruel world can push someone into that I was questioning before, other than people being hedonistic. Another part of her is still unknown as this episode doesn't feature actual resolution, more of a setup, but I'd wonder if she'd be much more attached to either Ikki or Sakura than it seems, as unfavorite child can easily latch onto anyone that shows them affection. The Deadmans, or at least Olteca and Julio, finally shows themselves on battle, and their difference in strength is noted by Revi in battle. But despite their strength advantage, they'd still resort into dirty tricks to further increase their advantage by using the girls as hostages (still... would be satisfying if Sakura reveals herself in front of the Deadmans, allowing Revice to beat them up unprovoked), as well as Julio lying to Daiji about their deal. Olteca and Julio seems to be set up as contrasts with the former being calm and collected, and the latter being hammy, waiting for the series to peel more of their contrasts. With both of the henchmen having Deadman form while being able to turn into human, now I wonder if Aguilera's going to be a regular Rider like Parado in Ex-Aid (with Lovelica and Graphite having their human and Bugster form). The Deadman bosses aren't 100% cooperative either, with Olteca teasing Aguilera for not showing tears to Giff and her reacting poorly... or that's their banter. George stays suspicious, before he gloats on Hiromi's demotion, and now he trashtalks Daiji for trying to henshin with his previous fear of creating more chaos. Bruh, everything is wrong in George's eyes, what should others do other than getting expected result like Ikki, morton's fork situation that if you try you'd be like Hiromi, if you won't try you'd be like Daiji, and either way you got bullied by him. Or it can be George's eccentric way of preventing Daiji to henshin due to his inner demons implied at the end of the episode, still it's the "cruel to be kind" approach that wouldn't be really optimal way against problems. Wakabayashi's the stereotypical professional and rigid type to forbid any personal feelings in the job, the type to see emotions as weakness. But well, open display of emotions can actually be pragmatically useful if used well, like being done on purpose to manipulate others and achieve the outcomes that one is after, such as lowering the guards of their audiences and earning their trust), or reveal a softer side to them in order to achieve their goals. Hiromi shows some ferocity as well not unlike Wakabayashi in the last scene... The ViStamp that Daiji took from Fenix...the Mammoth one, for Den-O themed mammoth form... even the intro still had Vice not replicating Momotaros fully, the Rider suit replicating Den-O less than ep. 2 before! It's nice to see more of the previous Rider's implementation other than aesthetics, of the brute Mammoth form being propelled forward by the rail. The finisher of Mammoth form is also my favorite so far, with an attack more than just an energized ordinary attack, the shield teleporting the boomerangs and then stacking up to squash the opponent. It was nice to see more of W's Cyclone as well with the Eagle using the wings to form a protective tornado. |
Thank god I waited for the superior subs to come out to watch it.

"All aboard! The Mammoth Express will be leaving shortly!"
I'll admit, I was a little skeptical about how they'd handle the Remixes, but seeing as to how they're bringing out one every time he transforms and how they're executed, I love them. Revice is handling the Legend Rider theme splendidly, which is great for people who weren't pleased, or think it's been too soon since Zi-O, and having them throw in so many references and aesthetics into them is even better. I also love the detail that George modifies the Deadmans' Vistamps by adding Legend Rider details to them. I think the cast is really doing great here! Ikki and Vice have pretty good dynamic, the latter being the boisterous spice and visual flare for the former, whose able to interact with the world around him, leading them through the conflict. And boy, looks like Sakura's going to be able to hold out on her own here (though I won't get my hopes up, folks), and Daiji's arc is happening sooner than expected. Rider and Sentai really stole this year. The story is working very well and we now have a glimpse of the next Driver, which I have a feeling might have a different color palette, like white with the FENIX logo or something. Curious on how his Demon Partner's going to be like. And the cliffhanger was pretty good going for the show-don't-tell approach, really setting things up for an interesting dynamic for the weekly villains lineup. Next Week: "You may choose one for your fair love. Vice or Desast?" "I choose Desast." |
