Friendly reminder to myself that we'll never get a SHF of Dezast. Yoshimitsu-looking-ass.

That buff Tinkerbell finisher had me rolling on the floor.
|
Genuinely had fun with this one. especially Tinkerbell
I like that Touma uses his knowledge of books to find how to defeat the opponent. There's a detective vibe. Mei actually did something smart this week. The firework thing. Also I noticed that when the monster appeared, she screamed in fear but her first reflex was to protect Sora (it happened for a split second when other victims were fleeing). Way less CGI again this week. That's a good thing and I enjoyed the fight that way. The Jakkun henshin of Buster though... the Jakkun part on his arm. No. Please no. I'm really not nitpicking here. Often when things are bad I try to not care. But that part of the henshin. The superposition of the vines on his arms isn't even right... They just plastered the vine effect on a previous henshin sequence. that's ridiculous. I really like Desast as an enemy. He feels like an enemy general even though he is not part of the trio. He has a meaningful name (Desast sounds like French "désastre". Disaster obviously in english) and even has a finishing move with a name (calamity strike). the 3 books henshin of saber almost look like a real 1st power up form he would get around Ep10 like Toucon boost or rabbit tank sparkling. It makes him look so different (but cool ^^) but I guess his real first power up will be his 3 books "best match/combo" which we got one of I think (storm eagle). |

Here's to hoping that Dezast is more of a Drago Knight Hunter Z bugster than a Ansatsu-chan, especially given the fact that Megidos don't really die and can just be brought back over and over. |
Is Busters stunt weapon made out of cardboard or something? :lol
I mean, safety goes first when it comes to shooting action scenes of course, but it just looks hilarious. https://i.imgur.com/XiTCGYn.jpg |

Of course, it could be safety reason like you said. Must suck for the suit actor in the monster suit to be smacked with that thing. Out of curiosity does anyone know what normal Toku swords are made out of? Polystyrene? |

It must be a flexible material because in some action scenes you can see the weapons bending if the actors swing them with enough force. |
Alright episode. The actors seem to be getting used to the role and stop being over-the-top, except Mei, but I guess this is the director's fault. Buster's actor seems to be more relaxed and I'm glad they didn't make the drama with Touma much longer.
I liked that Touma looked for the tale that the Megido is based on, so he might not be the most skillful rider, but the most creative and with the most knowledge. Also, the introduction of Desast was good, not fantastic, but I think the inclusion of the Wonderbook was a nice warning of how powerful he is. Calibur felt kind of the same, just threatening but you don't know what makes him threatening, aside from raw power. The finisher remind me a bit of ToQGer, which is refreshing from the usual slash effect. And being honest, I thought the three Wonderbooks would be in episode 10, so I'm glad they're not pretending to not understand how the thing works, it's more like OOO, where it's not prohibited, but it's too much power to be used frequently. Next episode seems to be getting us a bit of backstory. |
Episode 1 gave me bad vibes, but it seems like you're all enjoying the series so far. Should I give it another shot?

You know, last week I acted so sure this would just be the usual alright-ish Mouri episode, but I guess I forgot the way most Zi-O episode pairs work: the second part is always the best one.
Not that it's some particular thing to that series, of course. It's only logical the exciting climax be way more entertaining than the part that has to be burdened with all the setup, but... well, that's exactly what happened here. It's a really strong episode that touches on Touma's character a bit deeper and lets Ogami mellow out just a bit while also making time to do a ton of little things I loved. For example, how Mei got to be actively helpful in resolving the problem this early, or how, despite Saber and Blades going straight to a powerup form right away this early, we still see the base forms prominently in the ending fight against Calibur. They also pull the "really strong forms make you tired" thing right out of OOO, which gives me further hope we can finally have a Rider with a ton of forms that doesn't forget about their main one again. At least for a while, please? The gradual way the overarching plot is being built up is something I'm finding pretty interesting as well. Just these little bits of new information being dropped every episode that get payed off and expanded on at a rapid enough pace to be satisfying. Like Calibur and Espada apparently being the focus next week after giving us a little taste this time. I like that kind of thing. There's a good sense of momentum so far. |
Last week we learned you do not mess with the Dad Rider.
This week, YOU DO NOT MESS WITH TINKERBELL. Seriously, that finisher had me rolling for just how amazingly absurd it was, I never thought Tinkerbell being infused by electricity and fire slamming a monster with a lariat to full destroy them would be things I'd see. It definitely helps brings up Touma's unique and revolutionary way of fighting! Which while standard tricks have been working for the other Knights, it's definitely Touma's ingenuity that's going to allow him to keep up and get the wins in certain cases. This was a real nice episode, Desast was pretty cool and I can't wait to see more of him. It was also nice to see Buster mellow out a bit more once everything started lining up. Also it definitely didn't run into the same issue of "Henshin, Henshin, Form Change, Form Change, Form Change, Henshin, Finish" stock footage back to back like the prior episode had run into since they very nicely spaced all that out. |
Some design inspirations about Desast according to the official site. He's based on all three books types at once. His mythical creature is the Fenrir, his living creature is the Japanese Tiger Beetle, and his storybook is The Singing Bone.

ah so he is a 3 book enemy already. That kind of enemy is probably meant to be around for some time.
also forgot to mention how Daishinji was strangely kept in the back again. Why bother showing him if just like this ? |
Ah three books huh? He'll be sticking around for quite a bit then, not too long though I feel.
And by that I mean we'll probably see him around long enough for everyone to get their Full Elemental Match Forms to try and compete with and overtake him. |
If there a is a female rider, she's gonna be fencer huh. It's almost too predictable.

It's also more 'imaginative' I would say. I think is too early to say it's childish. But it takes you away from your comfort zone by having so much henshin stock footage and with the dancing ending. The acting is meh, but so was Aruto and he ended up growing on me, so I think they just need to tone down their exaggerated faces. So, answering your question, you could give it a second try. If you're still unsure, you could wait until episode 10 or 12 to know how it's going. |
The Tinkerbell finisher won me over.
I like how the boys didn't seem one bit surprised that Mei was among the captives in the bubbles, like it's completely expected she would find a way to stumble into a portal after they left. |
This show does nothing for me. I feel like I wasted 20 minutes of my Sunday and that's not a good sign. At all.
|
I'm gonna be more forgiving to this show than I normally would since they're essentially operating on half a budget due to them cutting their losses due to a pandemic but not good

I hope Luna makes a reappearance grown up and as a rider.

I suppose the only way to know if I'll enjoy it is to keep watching, so I guess the question I'm looking for an answer to is: have the subsequent episodes been better? |
I think I'm gradually warming up to the show now. I think I find this show more refreshing than Zero One, which I sadly thought was disappointing.

So basically all of this hinges on if you like the characters. |
Easily the best episode of the show to date. My biggest issue with Saber so far has been pacing - every episode has had at least one moment where it felt like a scene was missing and we'd jumped from Point A to Point C with no explanation. Not this week. The pacing was spot-on and the whole story felt complete and satisfying.
I really liked the characters this week, too, even if Mei went full Shunpei (I feel like I'd like her at least 20% more if she would just stand up straight instead of bending over at the waist all the damn time - I have no idea why that bothers me so much, but it just drives me right up the wall). If this is more of the Touma that we're going to get then I will definitely be enjoying him; I actually liked Rintaro taking more of the comic relief role instead. I'm a little surprised that Sword Dad survived (he has a name, I just don't remember it). I've been expecting him to die since he first appeared, but I think that's on me for not reading some of the subtitles in the promo for episode three right. It looks like he's sticking around for at least a little while longer, which is cool. His presence helps enforce the idea that there's a history to this order. Tinkerbell finisher hit a perfect sweet spot between being too weird and too stupid. I still don't know what the hell that was, but I'm a fan. I guess I also appreciated Tassel not recapping the entire episode I just watched during the outro. He's still awful, but I suppose that's something, at least. Quote:

I've yet to really come to a stance on this show aside from "What did I drink" and "I want Buster as my dad." I get the feeling even if this show never really permanently grabs my attention, I'll still like Buster.
At least Mei tried to do something helpful this time. |
Yeah, this was definitely better than the first half of the two-parter. I wonder if that's a common thing? I know Zero-One had it bad, especially during the job contest arc, where the first halves were mostly just okay but the second halves were way better. But I haven't seen other seasons that followed the two-parter format recently enough to remember if they were like that too.

Minor nitpick, but I feel like the scene with Touma discovering he can't just leap into using 3 books in one go could've been executed a little better if they didn't have him immediately transform to defend against Calibur in the very next scene.
That said, the rest of this episode was pretty nice. Dezast initially seems to be this shows version of Jinga from Garo, so it'll be interesting to see what they'll do with him as the show progresses. |
I think if there's more CGI because of the pandemic, it's not because of budget but because it can be done by (probably fewer overall) people working at home or otherwise in quarantine. I don't know what the lead time is between an episode being shot and it airing, or how restrictive things are in Japan right now, but I imagine they still want to limit the number of people standing around together inside (some of them without masks) if they can.
I do hope the henshins don't take up quite as much time in the future. I liked how in later episodes of Zero One they'd sometimes just have three or four people transforming at once and their jingles would all be overlapping each other and it didn't slow anything down. |
The council of sitting around antagonists are not doing anything yet and we are already introduced to ANOTHER powerful antagonist?
Good that this episode shows that Touma's book nerdiness are good for solving the story related problems...and that we already going full belt capacity on episode four. |

It will be the same as Ex-Aid. Ep1~10 we had video game-ish stock footage for the main 4 and they made it even quicker at some point. Then it stopped. Then only Mighty Brothers, Maximum Mighty, and Muteki had one but quickly disappeared. Poppy had a quick one too. Kuroto, Parad and Chronos didn't have one. Only special effects. With already 10-ish Rider teased in the main series, you can't expect every henshin and form change to have stock footage at some point. They'll cut them at some point and will keep them for important form change such as character introdution, elemental combos and season power ups. |
10-ish teased riders sounds like the perfect amount of Riders to give stock footage/green screen transformations to constantly forever in order to eat up filming time :D
|
I personally no problem if this series always used a CGI in transformation scene or in the some settings.
Hmm....I think this episode are really enjoyable. :D I love Touma as protagonist and he really remind me to Shinnosuke (Drive) in some aspects. The Saber's 3 Book Combo Form is really cool too :D |
What story is the Hedgehog book based on?
Also, I feel it's a bit of a bad call to have his 3 book form to already use red/yellow/blue. Since that's the same color combo as the 3 leads, it makes me think if they do pull a trinity situation, we've basically just seen it sans a few details. Anyway, I continue to feel a continual sense of disinterest for this show. Hopefully it'll pick up. While I will say this has been the best episode, that's not saying a lot. |
