What are you watching? Power Rangers Edition
Are you keeping up on any past seasons of Power Rangers? If so, talk about it! What series are you watching, what episode(s) are moving you that you're looking back fondly on, or even seeing for the first time?
I've been stomaching some Operation Overdrive, as it was the one series I had never really watched beginning to end (just the beginning, the team up, and the last few episodes). I also watched all of Jungle Fury the other weekend. A second time of that show really made it stand out as one of the better Disney seasons. |
That's because the really only good part about OO was Once a Ranger. Those episodes, for me anyway, nearly made up for the rest of it being confusing and bad.
I've been watching Dino Thunder since I've been talking it up in another thread. And it's still excellent in my eyes. The theme makes you get pumped, the acting is alright. Plus the premiere episode had a Nighttime Mech Battle. And how often do those happen?! |

I cant remember the last PR I watched... Maybe NInja Storm a month ago? Im trying to rewatch as much as I can. |
I finished Dino Thunder last week.
It started strong, but ended on such a huge anti climax that it was boring as hell. |

I wouldn't watch Ninja Storm again if you paid me. But one thing I would watch again is the Team Up episode they did with Dino Thunder .. Come to think of it, Dino Thunder did alot of team-up episodes.. |
I might rewatch Ninja Storm.
...Might. I still need to tackle In Space, though. |

I couldn't stand Mystic Force on my first watch. Thinking about it, MF was likely the first PR season that I started and stopped watching not because of poor scheduling, but because I just didn't enjoy it.

I found the story of Mystic Force to be very enjoyable, but the characters I never cared for.
Jungle Fury redeemed Disney in my eyes after some rather boring seasons |

I think the thing I disliked most about the Kalish era during Power Rangers was that there was always some SUPER BIG BAD GUY at the end that we either 1) didn't know about until the end of the series, or 2) didn't ever have a physical form until the end of the series.
In SPD, it's all about Grumm. Until the final few episodes where we learn of something called The Magnificence, and that's the main bad guy. Huh? In Mystic Force, it's Koragg, and then it's the Seven Demons or whatever, not to mention some half robot guy, and then FINALLY the Master becomes the main villain ... in the last episode ... and is just basically tentacle porn swapping away at Leonbow and Daggeron. In Operation Overdrive, I give him credit ... Flurious was there from beginning to end. But in Jungle Fury, we're back to Dai Shi being the main bad guy, and he's in Jarod's body for a majority of the season, gets out, and is just some CGI/bad puppet. But look at the seasons people seem to really enjoy (past MMPR). - Zeo had King Mondo as the main villain, and at the end of the series, the Rangers finally grow big and fight him without their zords. - Turbo had Divatox actually take the battle to the command center, destroy it, destroy the Power Rangers powers, and then retreat. - Space had Andros going against Astronema from the first episode to the last episode. - Galaxy had Trakeena as a major player from start to finish - Lightspeed Rescue always featured Impus and Bansheera as major enemies - Time Force had Ransik from start to finish - Wild Force had Master Org from start to finish - Ninja Storm had Lothar from start to finish - Dino Thunder had Mesagog from start to finish - RPM had Venjix from start to finish - ......even Samurai had Xandred from start to finish Introducing a new, super big bad guy at the end of a series cheapens the entire story up to that point. Kind of like a, "Hey, everything we did from the start to now doesn't matter anymore". And while that may work in major dramas and even movies, it doesn't really hold up well in a 30+ episodic series like Power Rangers. Megaforce bums me out because we're past the halfway mark of the "non-Gokaiger" footage and Vrak is still being made out to be this henchman with a goal ... but he's supposed to be the big bad. Let's get that established already! |
Although I don't think SPD was that great a season, I think they established that Grumm was answering to a higher power really well. I also loved how they did it, because you never knew if he was just plain nuts or not.
Jungle Fury on the other hand, I feel suffered the other problem, basically every villain in that show was a General, and it was amazing just how monotonous it got when every villain was 'THE STRONGEST WARRIOR IN MY ARMY'. Like I'd rather not have filler, or monsters of the week, but it made you realise how important they are in establishing the threat of the important villains. |

But I prefer a final confrontation with something then what we got in MMPR and Zeo, in which they never had a real final battle with Rita, Zedd or Mondo. Even Master Vile and Serpentera just left without a big finale... It left me feeling like something was lacking. Anyway, I really enjoyed Mystic Force up until the last arc. It was weird that they decided to try and put in the whole "magic family" theme of Magiranger right near the end (but only for three characters) and it just didn't work and meant that every scene was just "Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick" up until the very ending because everyone except him and his parents became pretty much irrelevant. |

In Mystic Force though, The Master was always the big bad from start to end. Everything they were doing was for him, and to ressurect him, with mini-plots happening around it. Like Koragg, and Calendor, and The Seven Dark Beasts. Or whatever they were named. |
I have no problems with them not establishing Vrak as a big bad yet because Goseiger did it so well with Buredoran/Brajira that I have faith that Megaforce can do a good job with it, even if it goes about it slightly differently. We know about Vrak's connection to the Super Megaforce villains, but we still don't know how that'll play out just yet so we could end up seeing Vrak stick around a bit longer.
I'm just a big fan of henchmen rising up to be big bads I guess. Explains why Enter and Brajira are two of my favourite Sentai villains. |
Meanwhile, I don't have much faith at all, but that's due to having to force myself to watch episodes of Megaforce...I just don't think Vrak's story will be handled well.

Rewatching PR Samurai.. And inexplicably I'm enjoying it more the second time around :eyebrow

Kids are so much smarter today than they were in the days of MMPR. These shows need to be produced in a way that tickles their intelligence instead of just assuming they're all laying on the floor with action figures eating Cheetos. |

...Shit. That's how Chrysalis was defeated...
Anyway, I do agree. I want the series to treat the audience like they're not completely brain dead. I understand that at the end of the day, PR is a glorified toy commercial, but it doesn't even attempt to hide the fact that they think their audience is drooling on the floor as they watch. |
I just purchased MMPR Season 3 for $10 at Target and watching it right now.
I'm up to where Kimberly transfers her Pink Ranger power to Kat. |
I bought the big MMPR set earlier this year and have since been watching through it. Haven't really watched any of this since I was a kid, so it's been interesting. I'm still in the first season, but I've got nine episodes left. While I'm still mostly enjoying the show, I have to admit that I probably wouldn't if I hadn't watched it as a kid.
I think the parts I'm enjoying the most are the scenes involving Bulk and Skull. They really could have made a show just about them. They're two PR actors I would love to meet someday, along with JDF. |
If I play my cards right, I'll get both Seasons 4-7 and Seasons 8-12 DVD sets for Christmas. I've taken a long hiatus after watching MMPR seasons 1, 2, and 3 (along with the Alien Rangers miniseries). So hopefully on Christmas Day I'll finally resume my long journey of watching every season of Power Rangers up to Super Megaforce!
Unfortunately, that journey means I'll have to watch Turbo. :( Plus, if I want to feel complete with my Power Rangers marathoning, that also would mean watching both movies. Help... |
I thought 99% percent of humanity hated smaurai and thought it was the worst Power Rnagers season ever.

Day of the Dumpster
MMPR S1E1 Ah, nostalgia. Those astronauts on the moon, let's call that desert the moon, seem awefully excited to find a Space Dumpster, don't they? "Yay! Space Trash!" It was nice seeing Ernie's again though, the real Ernie's. And Bulk and Skull. I wish Narvy was in more of Samurai than the last episode, not that Spike wasn't funny to. It was just nice seeing everything again. Alpha and Zordon, the Command Center. Trini. But on to the story! It was .. A story :lol But what can you do with borrowed footage. It did what it was supossed to do. Introduced the characters, the powers, told you who the villians were. And aside from a few hiccups it was good. Onward! |
I'm watching Ninja Quest Part 2 because I read a fanfic where they combined Ninja Quest and the movie together. Haven't finished that part of the story yet, but it madae me want to watch the episodes and movies again

I'm through 6 episodes of SPD. I never watched it sequentially when it was airing so it will be good to get that out of the way. I enjoyed how you didn't have a team to start out the series and it is taking a couple episodes to actually have them working together and trusting one another.

I still need to finish Samurai, but it wasn't as annoyingly terrible as some other series.

I've seen people argue that "It adds to their charm," but I couldn't stand them. Add in a stupid ass villain, and you have a recipe for WTF. |

Nothing in that show was enjoyable for me. It's my least favourite PR season by far. |

Honestly, Cam's arc is the only thing that stops me from wanting to condemn the series entirely. The Thunder Brothers were introduced WAY too early (I think they first appeared in episode 2? Maybe 3?) for them to feel like a large threat, and the designs were hit and miss (I liked the suits, but the megazord looked terrible. Way too bulky for a ninja and the Lightning mode just felt like a lame excuse "We couldn't figure out how to make the toys look this thin, so screw it. Let's just copy Ultraman for the next 3 minutes").
And how could you not notice the Extreme sport theme? Literally every scene not in their base or on a battlefield revolved around them and their sport of choice. Dustin in a non action scene? He's at the BMX shop tuning up his dirt bike. Shane in a non action scene? He's in his helmet chilling at the skate park. Tori? On the beach in a bikini. It's like Disney thought ninjas weren't cool enough so they had to make them EXTREEEEEME. |
