The what Book,Manga and Comic book are you reading thread
well i get allot of ideas from other thread like this and i know there ant one for this so here i am starting it. Like all the others it prity much what are you currently reading or finished in book manga or comic books or trade paper backs and graphic novels.
|
So far reading Pearls Before Swine and Rosario Vampire Season 2. Both don't get enough respect and reconnection IMHO.
|
I read too many American comics to talk about that here, but I will say that I am reading volume 2 of Slam Dunk. I've watched a good bit of the anime but have been picking up the manga as that seems to suit me more (I can read on my schedule better than watch a show). I really dig this story about the red-haired powerhouse Sakuragi and his quest to join the basketball team to win the heart of his beloved Haruko... who happens to be the younger sister of the team Captain... and is in love with his "rival" Rukawa. Great fun!

Just started IDW Robots in Disguise, unfortunately with issue #14,but got #9 a week or two ago.
|
Am currently re-reading RockMan: GigaMix series. I plan on reading my Marvel Zombies hardcover trades afterwards. I am currently looking for The Boondocks comic collections to read later.
|
Just finished Jaws and how confusing of the ending in the book is but was shocked of the twist the did in the film. I say a good read and I recommend it

Started reading New 52 Aquaman, if the purpose of the series was to stop Aquaman from being a joke then they nailed it because Aquaman is a solid ten on the badass meter.
|
Reading the new Nova...and damn I am depressed. Post-Annihilation Nova was just so much win with such organic growth for a character who was a solid B-lister for years on the verge of becoming more than just Marvel's answer to Green Lantern.
And they really really just...well. It's not pleasant to me at least. McGuiness is still doing great artwork though but...God damn. Blade of the Immortal trucks on and I have to say that I am getting impatient to see the Grand Guignol at the end when Habaki Kagimura and his Rokki Dan meets what's left of Anotsu's Itto-Ryu and Manji in Rin, caught in between loyalties, weird friendships with both sides and Rin's quest for revenge. It will end badly for everyone, I'm sure. |
My English class is reading Lord of the Flies. My thoughts:
*Jack is the Devil (or at least Beelzebub). *Piggy is going to die. *I hope Ralph and Simon survive. *Why does everything from my English class have to take cues from the Bible? |
I'm on the last issue of Saga of the Swamp Thing Book 2 and will then begin Book 3 right after. After that, I have the N52 Swamp Thing GNs to read along with Judge Dredd The Complete Case Files 02.

I read a lot of the New 52 but I am obsessed with Green Lantern-Hal Jordan and Shazam. So I am loving Green Lantern and Justice League. Also everything Valiant is putting out is really good too.

Getting close to finishing The Ocean At The End of The Lane now, I'm kinda meh'd by it. I really liked when Neil Gaiman did this whole gig with Anansi Boys and American Gods (gonna reread that after I've finished this) but I don't think there was the same sense of the real life and the fantastical coming together as a whole unit here. Who knows, maybe it'll come together in these last twenty or so pages.
|
I just started reading a collection of different stories by Edogawa Rampo.
|
Honestly, overall, The Ocean At The End of The Lane wasn't that great but after finishing that and moving immediately onto American Gods, I'm reminded how much I love reading.
Reading is never something I'm chomping at the bit to do, you're unlikely to ever see me read a book unless I'm having trouble sleeping, on holiday or travelling but whenever I am reading and transported to these other worlds as hours fly by I'm left asking myself why I don't do it more often. |
IDW MTME Transformers.
|
Bought Zexal #1 and #2 yesterday. Not reading them yet, I'm saving them for my holiday. Going to North Wales for a week
|
Been looking around for what to read next, I think my next stop is Joe Hill's Horns, then his third novel NOS4R2. It looks like people hated his debut novel so I'll skip that.
|
im currently working on book ten of The Wheel of Time, anyone else here read said wonderful book series?
|
Currently waiting IMPATIENTLY for the next issue of More Than Meets The Eye.
|
Started the second Dresden Files book while waiting for my train. Technically I was half way through this before I lost the time to read again so many months ago. I'm hoping I can pick it up from the second back, as rereading a book and a half would be a pain in the ass.
|
The IDW My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comics.
|
Almost done with the second Dresden files book, although the almost rambling style of writing won't be for everyone, I think Urban Fantasy fans will get such a kick out of this series. It has insane, comicbook like action sequences, it plays with the mythology in such interesting ways and Harry Dresden has to be one of my favourite protagonists ever, insanely powerful, ridiculously badass yet undoubtedly human.
|
All done with Fool Moon now, piling on Harry's injuries wrote Butcher into a corner a lot but the final act was still absolutely fantastic and extremely satisfying. Overall it really was a very enjoyable read, although I thought Storm Front was better by a slight margin.
I'm now moving onto Joe Hill's Horns as the third Dresden Files book has yet to arrive. Read the first twenty pages of Horns so far, I wish I didn't have to get up in like five hours for work because Hill has crafted a real page turning mystery here. |
Anyone here use Goodreads?

Been reading Psyren, Yugioh GX 5D's and Zexal, and Bakuman.
Starting off with yugioh Zexal, it starts off exactly the same as the anime but then goes into original territory once the later part of volume 2 happens with the Black Corn Xyz showing up. I'm really interested to see where this goes and I heard that there's a manga exclusive Utopia (the main monster the main character, Yuma, uses) upgrade coming up. The yugioh GX manga really isn't that great. I like Jaden's alternate backstory and characters switching up roles and decks but asides from that and cool duels, its just a copy and past story from the original Yugioh. I did like the final duel where Jaden whipped out all of his Six attribute Elemental Hero fusions and his game winning monster he only uses in this last duel (which they fucked up in making the card version of) .... Literally the same thing could be said about 5D's except Yusei has no backstory. We don't even learn how the hell he or the other characters that have Duel prison tattoos in the series get them in the manga on their faces. Although, I do give them props for making the connection between the original Yugioh and this series much more prominent in stuff like locations. Are we seriously turning the original Yugioh story line into a Mad Libs for the origin of these mangas? A dark evil named _______ has been sealed by ________ and its servants, the _________ over ________ thousand years ago and possess the _________duelists from __________ for world domination until the _________ stop them again The problem with these mangas is that they come out in a monthly shonen jump in Japan so they literally have only one arc to tell, and by the time they are done telling it, the anime has already been long over. They also sprinkle in characters from later in the anime into that alternate continuity. This monthly release style also has the potential to fuck up the pacing. It wasn't so bad in Yugioh R, GX ,and Zexal but 5Ds got screwed over really hard. "Let's have Yusei duel this manga exclusive character in chapter 1 to show off the new cards" "And then have him duel some random Skeleton dude on a horse in chapter 2" "And then have him duel Jack Atlas in Chapter 3" Thirty some odd chapters later.... "Shit, we need a villain." Editor: "How about that Skeleton guy from chapter 2?" Bakuman is a great manga. I'm only up to Volume 8 but its really good. If you don't know what it is, its basically a manga about manga artists who aspire to be the top series. And the people who made this also made Death Note. I usually like anything action related, but this has a really good story for having such a simplistic concept. Not to mention the tons of subplots going on with good development for the other tons of other characters. It also has really interesting concepts debated over like inexperience, trusting your own judgment or your editors, pushing yourself to the limit, what is love, and how much you must love your work and manga to keep on making a series. Psyren up to Volume 8. This series is about a mysterious world called Psyren and people are getting abducted out of nowhere and very few people return and now they have Psychic powers. The main character, Aghea, gets abducted into this world. I like this series, it has a cool premise and lots of interesting moral elements. I like the fact that it goes into detail about the types of Psionic powers there are, how people control it and what people's personal powers are. Its really intresting to see where this cocept can go and expand and where battles could end up by end game. I'm only in the 60's of chapters but I have seen some crazy shit. My main problem with this series though is that all of the villain humanoid characters look like Bleach villains (I've never seen Bleach but I have read about some dude who stopped a regenerating villain by stabbing a sword into his heart and poisoning him with a time slowing drug.) |
I'm like a quarter of the way through Horns now and it's...okay. It's well written and has a lot of good ideas and characters etc. What lets it down is that Hill doesn't seem to know what he wants to the book to be, so despite being a fairly short novel, it feels bloated and all over the place, going through sweeping tangents that completely change the tone and topic of the novel. Hell so far the Horns the book is named after have barely been in it.

still working on wheel of time, on book 11 now. Also been reading thne manga world war blue and waq waq

Horns is improving...ish. You see I'm just used to fast paced, action led novels, like movies in book form, so it's kinda hard for me to get around how static, slow and dialogue heavy this book is.
Many confrontations stretch out with barely a movement at all, with the few included seemingly there to frame sentences rather than drive anything else. I mean the book is coming together, and getting fairly interesting because of it but when you're used to wizards in sweatpants blasting werewolves through buildings, a few harsh words and a bit of a rough and tumble in a carpark is hard to get excited for. |
Very slowly making my way through More then meets the Eye.Great story so far, also Robots in Disguise.

Bakuman volumes 9 and 10.
I love how the Tanto arc reminds me that Takagi can't magically create amazing writing all the time. So no we know that both Masahiro and Takagi aren't super human. Although, I don't know how the hell Masahiro doesn't get hand cramps after drawing manga for 5 years. When the main plot got back into motion in Volume 10, it stopped all of the fun subplots. i don't know if its just me, but Bakuman was at its best when it was mostly about the subplots of the other characters and their interactions with each other. This new dude writing True Human seems kinda useless to the plot, only being used as a device to scare Aroshogi into not using the World is about MIA again. All of the other manga artists haven't really done anything. Granted, at the end of the last chapter of the volume, we do see some set up with Hattori and the Otter No 11 and True Human guys. |
Just started reading Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon volume 3 and I'm already at the end of the original manga version of the Dark Kingdom arc. I have been enjoying the series so far and on another note, Sailor Venus really kicks ass in this.
|
Finished Skulduggery Pleasant Last stand of Dead Men yesterday and it was amazing probably the best book I have read all year and probably will not be beaten by anything else out this year.
|
Read Time Riders 4 earlier this week in one sitting. Damn, I forgot how addictive this series can be. Got 5 reserved at the library, and got 6 out so it doesn't disappear!
|
Just caught up with and finished Dance in the Vampire Bund this week.
Wow I am not happy with that ending. It really wasn't one anyways. I'm happy to see there's a sequel series... but then after seeing how it's already been going on for a year and nothing's been scanlated yet, I've not got hope for seeing that any time soon. It took forever just for the original, and even then a lot of it was pretty poor... |
First 7 issues of Ultimate Spiderman and volumes 9 and 10 of Psyren.
First few issues of Ultimate Spiderman I got major amounts of deja vu when I read these issues, because they were the basis of the origins for Peter in the Amazing Spiderman movie. Though this comic has my favorite version of uncle Ben, why? Because Ponytails. And it has my least favorite version of Peter because his hair makes him look like a hippie. I am really interested in the new monster that showed up, I knew it wasn't Lizard but I spoiled myself by accidentally flipping to the back of the book revealing to be Green goblin. My library district doesn't have the second collection containing issues 14-26 so I'm going to have to use the library my friend goes to to read more. Psyren volumes 9 and 10. So in volume 9, the main plot becomes save Nemesis Q's creator from Big Boss, I mean that suspicious looking dude from chapter 1 that wanted to take Ageha's card. It was an okay fight with Ageha using his new power of the Melez shield. And we find out who the creator of the Psyren game is...... a new character. I thought when I first saw her in the tube, it was Amiyama's mentor, I mean she did disappear relativity soon after Rebirthday ahppen to never be seen again. So in my mind, she maybe built up her Psionic powers and then got physically harmed, so she created Nemisis Q and put herself in the game so her from the past could learn how Psionic powers worked and teach people how to use their powers they could save the future. But nope, just some random woman born with Psionic powers who was the twin of the villain. I went on Wikipedia and found out this series has 16 Volumes so I hope in the next 5 volumes, they wrap up the story relativity well. I don't think it will considering there's four more villains to blow through, fights usually take multiple chapters along with the resolution of character developments and stopping Psyren from happening. And there was a bonus comic at the end of volume 10 featuring a the main character from a manga about a toddler who doesn't wear underwear. Ageha and Amiayama talk to his mom in the present and some characters in Psyren at the time passed by the same kid grown up, still wearing no underwear. WHAT THE EVER FLYING FUCK. |
