Kamen Rider Coming to North America Possibly?
Not sure how to post links, but Team Rider of Bluefin Brands posted a pic of themselves at Shout Factory, and August Ragone posted on Twitter about Kamen Rider, also has the hashtag #KamenRiderUSA2020. This is likely hinting at a possible legal release of Kamen Rider in North America.

I hope we can get these shows on Blu-Ray because I hate watching things in SD. Stuff in SD looks so bad on my 4K TV.
|
Kinda surprised it took this long. If ai have to be honest I fogured being one of the big two (the other being sentai of course) that Kamen rider would have been rumored before either Ultraman ( I'm not talking about the chaiyo stuff just for the record) or Garo.
|
At least this way we can fully support the franchise besides the merchandise.

I'd be very interested in getting official subs for basically any Kamen Rider series really; though I hope they'd include stuff like winter and summer movies or prominent specials.

My dream is a full-service platform, new episodes dropped within seven days of Japanese airing, every old Showa and Heisei series slowly added, all Net Movies and theatrical films, some scholarly Ben Mankiewicz-style historical context, all with proper subtitles and viewing order. For that? I mean, $30/month would feel like a steal. So, of course, what we'll probably get are Blu-ray releases of just, like, Black RX, Ryuki, and Ghost, with no movies or bonus features. |
I'm picking up all the official releases we've been getting of Ultra series and Sentai series, so I would for sure buy any official release of Kamen Rider since KR (and Godzilla) are my two favorites out of them all.
I would love official bluray for 1971 Kamen Rider, KR 'W', Amazons, Black, Build, and The First/The Next.. but I'll take whatever I can get. |
RIP Europe tho, Shout Factory doesn't ship to the EU last I checked.
Soooooo guess I gotta get some buddies to buy them for me if this is happening |
I already have V3 on official DVD, as well as The First, so I'm aaaallll the way down for this.
|
If they release them in order, I would imagine a possible set of Kamen Rider 1971 is going to be very pricey. A show that is super long + licensing fees is not going to make it cheap.
|
I will selectively yet happily indulge in official KR releases. Anything to support Tokusatsu in the West.

Plus, even if subbing groups will shelve their releases (as they should) the internet never forgets. So if you really can't get the official release - you won’t miss out on anything. I'm in for an official release of Kamen Rider in the west; question is where they're starting though. Showa? Heisei? With Super Sentai, Shout started with the original version of Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, Zyuranger, so... will they release Kamen Rider Ryuki first because of Masked Rider Dragon Knight? Or Black RX because of Masked Rider? |
If this is happening, they'd better be as good as the Mill Creek Ultraman sets.

Official DVD and Blu-ray releases would be good enough.

I think it’s fairly likely we’ll start with either Kuuga or W. Bluefin’s been riding that Heisei Belt train and hasn’t so much has referenced Showa, so it’s clear what part of the franchise they’re banking on. |
While I personally would love it if they started with Kuuga, I think it'd be best if they started with KR1, if only for the sake of completionism. And while it's not very likely, since they've yet to sub the Super Sentai movies, I would hope they'd at the very least sub the summer movies for each KR too.
...Actually, thinking of Kuuga, I'd hope that were it to get subbed, it'd have two different sub tracks. One with the Grongi translated the other without. |

I would say that anyone who releases the Riders should take a cue from Mill Creek and release multiple series at once so as to cover the enormous library of material:
- Kamen Rider (1971) - Kamen Rider Kuuga - Kamen Rider W Each one is significant in its own way: '71 was when it all started, Kuuga is considered the official start of the Heisei Era, and Double came after Decade and effectively started the "Next Decade" of Heisei without relying on multiple past Riders like Decade. Releasing Ryuki for the sake of Dragon Knight is much too random, and Black RX for the sake of Masked Rider makes less sense as RX is a sequel series to Black. That being said, I believe that "Kamen Rider Dragon Knight" should be licensed for release. I didn't pay enough attention to it at that time, and reportedly, it wasn't a terrible adaptation so much as an adaptation that couldn't attract enough of an audience. If the Riders are ever adapted and interwoven into the Power Rangers Multiverse, then Hasbro must purchase the rights to the Dragon Knight adaptation and merge it with PR! Essentially, it's the old "Should Sony's Marvel Movies be integrated into the MCU or not?" debate made manifest on a smaller scale! However, the idea of licensing "Masked Rider" for a new release is controversial even to me! The only aspect of that show that has truly survived is the backdoor pilot for Mighty Morphin' Season 3, "A Friend in Need", and I think that's where it needs to stay. The only way a Rider adaptation could ever work is by merging the Riders with the Rangers. The Riders will be different to a Western Audience who is too young to be familiar with the extensive history of Kamen Rider. Actively merging itself with the familiar is the best way to make this work. As far as I'm concerned, Dragon Knight should be a part of PR canon, but Masked Rider (the Series) should not be! Any Rider adaptation, if it occurs, shouldn't upset or anger anyone ever! If Hasbro chances that and you watch it and hate it, then just go buy the source material on disc and call it a day! |
I think introducing people to Masked Rider through a lens of them first knowing about what it's adapted from would be really, really funny so I'm all for it.

I really, really hope something does actually come of this. Even if it's a series I've already watched (pretty likely), I'll definitely buy what they release.
My personal guess for what it'll be is W. They've done a lot of polls asking for your first and/or favorite Rider series, so that data's likely to influence a decision like this. And it's a pretty darn popular first and common favorite still I think. |

For every one hoping that they'll start with the original show and it would be cool if they did keep in mind that it's almost a hundred episodes long, had to look that up I was originally thinking somewhere in the 70s,. Granted they could split it up into two sets it's still a bit of a risl considering how old it is. There's a better chance that they'll start with a newer series like Kuuga. Before someone points out that Mills Creek is releasing the original Ultra series they and Tyduburya more than likely have the sale data for the previous releases by Chaiyo, or at least they should have if they dodn't after getting the rights fully, and the streamind data from cruncyroll and the Toku channel. So they're aware of the size of the Ultra audiance, Rider doesn't really have that.
|
As long as it comes out on Bluray, I'm fine with whatever series they choose. But if they go with DVD again...
|
W as the first series released by Shout would be a good choice because I feel like W is not a bad place for new comers.

honestly like I'm doing with Sentai and Ultraman, I'll buy whatever they put out just to support Toku.
I would love to see a bluray set of V1, Kuuga and W, (as has been mentioned), but it's not like I don't already have external harddrives of all of the shows anyway. But I want the artwork and prefer official merchandise. I like seeing the Sentai and Ultra boxsets sitting on my shelf with my Godzilla blurays and would love to add Kamen Rider to the collection. |
I did see 2009's US Dragon Knight on CW. I liked it. My first Rider show. Missed the last 4 weeks darn it.
I have yet to see Rider otherwise. They released the first Ultra from the 60s on Shout but Mill Creek got that line. As I just got a Blu Ray this week on Wednesday it'll be cool to see Ultra and Rider line shows both. The Ranger line started me on Toku actually having seen Power Rangers so I since have watched the source shows (in progress) |
Thinking about it, yeah. Considering that Kiva, Decade, and W are all getting belt releases, those three shows will probably be the first ones we see released.
Which, oh man is it gonna be interesting seeing the reactions of anyone introduced into the series through Kiva or Decade. |
Even W would be... interesting to start with, given its winter movie (which has importance to the series in its backstory rather than just being a cute little side jaunt) is a crossover with Decade and involves all of the riders and everything else in Decade. And especially considering that W would be the first one in this instance, that's gonna be really weird. It'd be like if MMPR in its first quarter had a crossover with all the previous Sentai teams
