Power Rangers Fan Film starring Katee Sackhoff
http://spinoff.comicbookresources.co...gers-fan-film/
Remember that photo of her in a power rangers costume and those weird looking props that some thought was for the big budget PR movie. Turns out it was for a fan film which is basically Power Rangers but violent as all balls. I just watched it before posting this thread, and I'm not sure how to feel about it...it was cool in some respects but urgh there are moments that were just too awkward to watch. |
That was... interesting. I mean, the idea of a super gritty R-rated power rangers movie is okay, but... eh, I don't think it works as well as it could have.
|
So according to this article the whole thing of missing the point was done on purpose.

This is absolute trash. I'm sorry but it is. Fan films as a concept are something I really don't get to be honest. But this? Even if it's satire or parody of "grimdark" as people are purporting it to be? It's just awful.
|
Eh, reading that article made my opinion of it worse still. It seems more like they just wanted to make some absurd dark and gritty movie (playing into the cliché despite trying to sound like they're being original) and wanted to seem smart so they added the barest elements of Power Rangers. It's a deconstruction with none of the redeeming elements.
A dark version of PR could be done but I personally think it would have to be a reconstruction. The original is so idealistic that one isn't really adapting it if you just drain all the colour out and make everyone betray each other constantly. On the good side, it was fairly well made. While I disagree with the aim, the lighting did make the suits look less happy and bright while keeping the colours and the little opening segment had good effects. The fight choreography and machine effects were good too, although they felt out of place. |
I thought the short film was amazing. I love power rangers and super sentai but I'm glad they did something completely different. I would be down to watch a feature length film of this.
|
This was fun, not as Power Rangers. But as a random action quick film. Do I want this is the actual movie, or future seasons? Oh hell no.
|
I gotta agree with Den-O here. I thought it sucked. It was just generic and had nothing to do with Power Rangers other than names. This feels more like it should have been a plot to either Mortal Kombat or a Syfy channel TV show, not Power Rangers.

:eyebrow
Why is it that every single Power Rangers fanfilm producer thinks Power Rangers needs to be grim dark? |

Even if this thing is parody or satire of the dark film reboot idea, it's utterly pointless. It isn't even enjoyable as an examination & deconstruction of that sub genre. It's just pandering violence and swear words for the fun of it. |

I'm just sad about the people who do like the approach of the short and think that's the direction things should go. |
Can't say I overly enjoyed it, but that was pretty interesting regardless. It went REALLY gritty, over the top for sure, but from what I gathered that's what the guy was aiming for. It's definitely a cool concept and you know what, I'd watch another episode of it.
Should this be a new direction for a TV show or movie? No, no, no. |
I enjoyed it.
As a stand-alone piece of work - it's fine. Does it capture the "magic" of Power Rangers? Of course not and it wasn't trying to. You can tell simply by watching it that it's making fun of itself. This truly is the example of what Hollywood wants to do to every property it touches. I recognize that and I laughed because it's true. Fun short film. Not the end of the world as Twitter would make you believe. And for those worried that this will make Lionsgate and Saban change their direction of the official movie? Like they're going to start listening to older fans NOW :p |

Seriously, things I never want the Power Rangers franchise to be: a cheap imitation of Watchmen. However, that said, I have to REALLY freaking wonder how they got Sackhoff and the rest to actually do this. I'd love to be some dude with a bottle of Everclear going "Yo Katie, how would you like to do a scene with Beek where you're the Pink Ranger?" SMH. Someone else called it a deboot. I would second that. I'd kickstart the crap out of the guy doing 'The Ranger' videos just so I wouldn't have to watch someone elses fanfic of this brand of nonsense. Now...where was I in my writing of my own LGBT fanfic "Fifty Shades of Goldar"....? |
So the story is a little deeper than people realize. Takes a few re-watches.
Spoilers. - Story skipped the entire "Lord Zedd" thing and focused on Rita - Machine Empire and Earth at war - Truce signed - Rocky switches sides and joins Machine Empire - Rangers begin dying, Machine Empire suspects Tommy is evil again - Tommy confronts Rocky - Kim kills Rocky, Tommy reveals Kim died a long time ago, Kim reveals herself to be Rita That's a GREAT story twist in my opinion. |
Wow that was very Very cool. I hope the movie can be somthing like this. I don't want the next movie to be a reboot.

This just isn't for me. I'm not going to sit here and rail against it. You enjoy it then more power to you. This just isn't my thing. One thing is I paused it at the Megazord scene at the start and that is a cool design for the combined mecha. I'd love to see a clean shot. It just seems like it was dark and violent for the sake of being dark violent. Does that make sense? |

It was intresting I'm not saying it was bad or good there wasn't a nuff to form an opinion.

I've thought for a while that the Lionsgate Power Rangers movie, when it emerges, should be a blend of Avengers and Pacific Rim. I think that would be a good balance. I saw "Divatox" and "Scorpina" in the end credits and had to watch the thing again, thinking I'd blinked and missed them - turns out they were just the two girls with "Zack". That I recognised the actresses' names in the credits says far too much about me. A nice touch was getting Carla Perez in as Rita at the end, though. One more thing, with these fan films & fanfics, what it with people wanting to make a deal out of killing off Trini? I know in this film the point is all the other Power Rangers are dead, but the funeral bit didn't quite sit right with me. Kinda interesting seeing how opinions are divided, though. |
Loved it!
|
Enjoyed this thing. Definitely not what I'd like to pay to see in the theater, but still fun to watch. I loved the interpretation of the green ranger shield and other elements of the cinematography, but my favorite plot point was the child soldiers theme. This was awesome! A higher intelligence recruits teenagers to fight his war? How would that effect the world and the recruits themselves? That's the only thing I would like to see in any more "adult" interpretations of PR in the future.

Has anyone caught the magazine cover about "Real Love" on Billy's office wall that shows him holding another man?
The fandom hasn't lost their shit over that one yet so it's only a matter of time. |

And pulled already. What a shock.

I've made my thoughts pretty clear on both Twitter and Facebook. This is awful in almost every single way. I guess I have to commend the thought they put into crafting the story, but it missed the mark in every single way. Unnecessarily dark and gory, turning heroes into villains etc. It represents just about everything I hate about Hollywood remakes these days. And despite somehow getting a big name like Katee Sachoff on board, she still gave a flat and uninspired performance. That said, if this thing really IS meant as parody/commentary then its both genius and depressing. The general consensus for this video from non-fans who grew up with MMPR is shocking. The idea that everything from your childhood has to grow up with you is nauseating. I'm not convinced that is the case at all though, it all sounds like backtracking to me. You could make that kind of point on a fraction of the budget and effort. This just has "make a popular viral video" written all over it. |

I thought it was kinda cool...I did like the brief mecha fight in the intro and some of the concepts (Rocky "never one of us"). The slight twist...and I really liked the fight with Zack. I put it in the same level as Mechanical Violater Hakaider honestly...just turn off your brain and embrace the level of insanity.

So. That happened.
|
So both Johnny Yong Bosch and Steve Cardenas have said on Facebook that they liked it. I'm a bit surprised, but I'm curious to see what other cast members think as well.
|
The satire seems intentional. There's just way too many Hollywood cliches for it not to be. The Youtube comments are hilarious though. So many people don't get it, and insist they should really do this. lol
|
Sat down and saw the thing myself and the production values are pretty top nothch. As for the movie itself I havent laughed this much in a long long time :lol

David Yost being gay and the "outrage" over it is a long dead and buried issue. The fandom are largely in full support of him and his preferences, whats the problem? |
Quote:
When they found out that this was incorporating the fact that the actress who played Trini was dead (the funeral scene), the fandom lost its shit. "HOW DARE THEY PORTRAY THAT SHE DIED IN TO THIS MOVIE?!" "THE CHARACTER IS ALIVE BUT THE ACTRESS IS NOT, SO MUCH POOR TASTE!" Yet, here they allude to the fact that Billy is gay - even though the character was never portrayed as such, just the actor. So where's the uproar? This has nothing to do with anyone and their sexual preference - this is just over the fact the fandom picks and chooses what it gets upset about. |
Not gonna lie that was pretty dumb lol
