For anyone looking to get into making custom figures for commission, just know that it’s not as profitable as you might think. Be smart, plan accordingly, and don’t take on more commissions than you know you can handle. Too many times have I heard about artists being bogged down with so many customs because they thought they could handle it or they’ve stopped because it was too overwhelming. Don’t let this happen to you. Other than that, the sky’s the limit. Use whatever resource you have necessary to make your project turn out how you would want it to. If you have to sacrifice that hard-to-find figure because he has the perfect head, then sacrifice that hard-to-find figure. Mint-in-package figure has the perfect weapon for your custom? Rip that sucker open! You can always replace something you can buy even if it takes some time to do so, but making that perfect figure is a unique experience that has its own level of gratification and, in the end, it’s totally worth it. OH, and before I forget, stay humble. There is a difference between being proud of your work and coming off as a prick. Don’t criticize someone else’s work just because you think yours is better. Think that yours is better, by all means, but don’t down someone else’s hard work because of it. After all they probably put in just as much work or more into their mediocre custom as you might have in your awesome one. And if they didn’t, well, talk them up, relate by telling them what you went through, and help them improve. After all, if we can all stay humble and look at this hobby as a collaboration and not a competition then we ultimately better the community as a whole and the output we produce. |
Great interview and a great idea for a new feature!

Kingranger, if you're reading this, I LOVE YOUR CUSTOMS! Before I got into Riders, I loved Sentai and PR to death and I drooled over your customs. Now, I'm reliving that sense of amazement again, I didn't see that Wolzard before and it is gorgeous, along with Dekamaster!

Very nice interview with the king
|
I have seen the Deathryuger and Kyoryu Silver, and they are so great! I wish Figuarts had done official releases of these characters; it's good to know that there is an exceptional unofficial option.

Love king ranger work, customizing is hard work so props to him and all that do it
|
There's definitely an art to customizing. Kingranger is probably the best in the Power Rangers business and I'm happy to see that he's expanded his work to cosplay related stuff these days.
I'm also excited as the pictured Gold Ranger/Kingranger S.H. Figuart custom was once for sale on eBay - and I tried to purchase it - before he had to pull it because the original guy who commissioned it decided he wanted it after all. But Kingranger reached out to me and is currently working on one for me and I should have an update on it soon. And of course I'm going to gallery the sh*t out of it. |

I'm so glad we got official figuarts versions. |
The Scream Man Interview: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C2-XD9DVIAAQA9N.jpg 1. When did you first get into the Toku Community? - Around 2011. OOO's was in the middle of its run, but Fourze was the first Rider show I watched from Episode 1. 2. How long have you been customizing? - Extensively since the early 2000's, but it was only once KR Drive came out that I started on Tokusatsu customizing. I decided that having De-Henshined Riders was a must have for my collection, and started figuring out how to make it. 3. What was the first custom you did and was it for yourself or for a customer? - My first Tokusatsu custom was Shinnosuke Tomari from Kamen Rider Drive. It was for me, until very recently I had never done a custom for anyone but me. 4. What materials and methods do you use when customizing? - I use Figmas as the base figure. I paint using citadel paints, and seal with a mix of clear nail polish (Which gives a glossy coat), or Aqueous H20 for a dull coat. I use Citadel paints for the colours, and Green Stuff for sculpting. I like to keep things as simple as possible, so I try and take figures that are similar to what I want and combine them in different ways to make it work. The fewer changes i need to make, the less chance of paint rub or other problems. 5. How much do you enjoy customizing? - Well, I'd prefer it if they made real toys that wee the way I wanted them, but i dont mind tweaking things to make it work the way I'd like them too. It's fun to do my own work, but it's not cheap! 6. What is your favorite piece you've made? - Takeru Tenkuji and Makoto Fukami from Kamen Rider Ghost both came out extremely well. Chase is the one who seems to have gotten the most attention though. he was a pretty simple job, though i wish I could have gotten the chains across the front of his jacket a little finer. 7. What is your least favorite piece you made? - Ugh, Kagami Arata from Kamen Rider Kabuto. I don't know why, but no matter what I do the jacket is always tacky and sticky. I have tried different paints and layers and tricks; nothing works! I've added so many layers the colour on the jacket is now basically indistinct from the rest of it! At some stage I'll have to take another shot at the character. 8. Biggest customizing job you've had/most tedious to make custom? - Well other than the never ending battle to have Kagami not be tacky and sticky (Which is also a problem on the vest for Kouta Kazuraba from Gaim) Takeru from Ghost was pretty hard. It took ages to figure out how i was going to make his loose over shirt; eventually SH Figuarts helped me out by making Luke Skywalker from Star Wars! Thn i had to take out the head and neck jints, and then shave off a lot of the belt. I sculpted lower pants over Lukes boots, and added sculpt to the belt to look more like Takerus, then inserted a neck and head from a Figma figure into the socket, securing it with green stuff. Then the painting began, and Takeru has these super intricate patterns on his jacket. I picked one that seemed relatively simple to copy and went ahead, but it was about a day of VERY small work to get it to look right. 9. I've noticed your social media depicts several works in progress. Any that we're gonna see real soon? - I just finished Emu Hojo from Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, because the recipe came to me very quickly. Ive ever beaten the Figuart of the Rider out! I won't show him off till his SHF is out though. Then there is a base Figma coming in March that I think will let me make Philip from kamen Rider W if I can figure out how to make his vest/jacket thing. I have loose plans for a Alain from Ghost, Hiiro and Taiga from Ex-Aid and I want to do Shouichi from Agito and Takumi from Faiz if the right parts come to me. 10. Any advice for fellow Customizers? - Pick your parts carefully, and decide what it is you want to achieve. Do you want to get the essence of a character, or a photo realistic portrait? If just the essence; what can you do to make the character identifiable at a glance? And how do you do it with as few changes to the base figure as possible; The more original parts and colours you can use, the less paint rub issues you'll have. |
He does great work. Love seeing customizers getting a little spotlight

Awe man, this is what the movie megazord should've been from the start.
|
Wow. I have no attachment to Power Ranger, Daizyujin, or the movie. With that said:
That thing is wonderful. I saw the movie design, rolled my eyes, and moved on. I'm stunned that this has been turned into something so drastically cool. Beautiful work, I'm beyond impressed. |

It still suffers from really pedestrian attempt at 'detail' but that's the design's fault not the artist. He did great gleaning as much personality and colour contrast from the figure as he could. I also like the classic-coloured rangers. |
Another great artist getting some spotlight. I dig it.
|
I don't care for the head that much but for me the head mold would have to be tweaked some for it to look right for me. But otherwise I think this could be best described in one word . . .
DAMN!!! |
How come we don't get nice things like this.
|
It really is stunning. It's almost as if the Japan and America collabed to make it; America designing the movie Zords and Japan coloring them. Either way, a vast improvement. The only thing I could ask for is more BEFORE/AFTER pics or comparison pics between the customized toy and the original zords from the 90's.
|
I'm loving this design and I'm pretty sure JTMitchel from youtube bought and reviewed this set with the soul purpose of painting them up like this based on the twitter photos. Thats awesome!
