LupinRanger VS PatRanger Episode 1- "The Troublemaking Phantom Thief!" Discussion
The Phantom Thieves are on the hunt for treasures from the legendary Lupin Collection, while the International Space Police are after both the collection AND the thieves. In the midst of it all is a strange group called the Gangler...
SuperHeroTime HAS MOVED TIMESLOTS! You can still view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block now start at 8PM EST on Saturdays! |
I really dug that first episode. I don't always make it for the live streams like I used to. With my old job I could watch them nearly every week. With my current one I maybe do it every few months. But I really really liked that. It was totally worth tuning in for.
Lupin's have all the style and swagger, Pat's have all the heart. Really liking this show. Haven't reacted that well to an opening episode in a very long time. I look very much forward to more! |
For a first episode, that was pretty stellar.
The cinematography was pretty outstanding. Loving the look of the Lupinrangers. Kind of a shame that the Patorangers didn't do much, but hopefully that'll be fixed in the coming episodes. Also, I noticed that one of the Gangler monsters was a recolored suit from one of the Toqger movie villains. EDIT: Make that three suits, the Toqger Villain, a modified Bacchus Gill suit, and a modified Toqger Kuro suit. |
This first episode was straight up on fire. Can't wait to watch the sub.
|
|
That Gangler theme during the dinner scene was so fucking great.
|
R.I.P Sentai Ending themes. LupinvPat officially going down the Kamen Rider route now by having an ending screen.
Then again this was the first episode and maybe they were trying to cram in a lot of stuff (to the point where we didn't get the official OP this episode which might be the first time in a while) but I suspect that given how well Rider has done in comparison to Sentai I don't blame Toei for copying aspects of the former over to the latter. This is the first Sentai to run entirely in a 9:30 slot after all. |

Loved the first episode, I am really looking forward to seeing how this one plays out.
|
I'm of course going to watch it again when subs come out, but that helped me pay more attention to the cinematography. It was super good and fittingly stylish. I actually hope that Patranger focused episodes have a more subdued editing style to go with them.
I kind of hope this show does better with its monsters than Zyuohger and Kyuranger did, since I like the Gangler's a lot... but I feel like they're going to do two episodes to a monster for this series. It would make sense. Also I'm wondering how many of the monsters in the dinner scene were generics, and how many are actually going to be actual monsters. Time to comb through it! EDIT: Found three different monsters that will probably turn up later, obviously the snail guy, but there's a shark looking guy and another weirder dude who both have safes on them. There might be one other, but we never get a good look at him. The rest are generics, but interestingly they don't seem to be straight up reuses outside of the guy at the front who uses Domidoll's body with a new head. |
Absolutely loved this intro episode and cannot wait for more.
Interestingly, when was the last time we had a sentai first episode with absolutely no mecha action whatsoever? I loved that they did that, but its been quite some time since we've had that. |
F*** me, this was amazing. I haven't been this blown away by a Sentai premiere since... ever? To be fair though, I've only been watching as it airs since ToQger, but still. They didn't even force a giant robot fight in. Think about that for a second. That's absolutely shocking. Although I guess Bandai can't be mad because the Good Striker isn't even out yet.
The point is, between that, and the lack of both an opening and an ending theme, this episode had a TON of time to breathe, and as a result they set everything up really nicely, and give you a decent handle on the characters, while still making time for some very slick action. It also strangely felt a lot like watching an episode of Sentai from the 2000's? I can't pinpoint it, but something about this felt very different from the last almost-decade of Sentai, which, as much as I love all those shows, is definitely not a bad thing. Oh, and for the record, I'm still firmly biased towards liking Patranger over Lupinranger. I had no idea Keiichiro was going to be so high-strung (I was expecting someone a bit more straightforwardly serious), but that's a really, really hilarious personality to give the guy leading a squad of super-powered cops, so I'm hardly disappointed. Not that the other guys aren't cool though. Speaking of things it's shocking they didn't do, we have two different Reds, and neither of them are screaming idiots! What are the odds? So yeah, absolutely going to be looking forward to more of this every week. This episode clicked with just as much as Kamen Rider Build's premiere, and look how great that's going 20 weeks later. |
over-time subs are out. Look forward to watching once it downloads.

Okay this is dope first episode compared to episode 1 last season this is more superior and make me want to watch again, and i like all lupinranger member feel like that they have combat experience, they freaking dishing out goon in civillian without henshin to ranger :D
And finally no screaming idiot reds anyway i feel this series will be good |
I really liked that. It seems to focus a bit more on the Lupinrangers, but I have a feeling it'll balance out a bit more as the plot progresses. I'm glad they didn't try to cram a mech fight into the first episode as well. Overall, it was a nice surprise, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of this series.
Anybody else watch Jojo's? The flame monster was voiced by the same guy as Okuyasu. |
Holy crap, I think this is the best Sentai premiere we've had in years. The cinematography is fantastic in this one. While Patranger doesn't get too much action they did a good job at focusing the balance between the two teams.
Best of all, it seems like the first episode doesn't exactly focus too much on Red either, yes Kairi gets a lot of focus but it seems natural rather than forced like they did with Lucky. Seriously, I've my issues with Zyuohger and Kyuranger, but Junko Kimura feels like a different beast writing this. It also does feel like a Kamen Rider show, with the lack of ending themes and all that. I'll be doing a review and post the link here. |
That was quite the fun opening. The cinematography in the fight was wonderful, and I absolutely loved the music they used for the Lupinrangers. Very enjoyable. Also quite nice to not shove in LupinKaiser's fat ass into the first episode. No giant robos gives more time to the rangers. Yay~
I liked that the police couldn't initially transform. Was pretty neat, though having it only be a limitation of less than one episode is kind of disappointing. I also enjoy the villain's plot. He's not trying to take over Earth because of reasons, he wants to pass down his fortune and crime syndicate to a worthy heir. It's kind of interesting. Also seeing him as a pretty chill boss willing to celebrate rather than just yell at his henchmen is always a nice change. I don't like LupinRed's haircut, though. It's ugly. All in all, I found myself enjoying this. I'm super curious as to where things are gonna go from here. |
Things I really liked:
The slow pace. They took their time setting things up. Necessary with two team, but they easily could have tried to rush things. The suitless fighting. The Lupinrangers almost don't seen to like using the suits unless they really have to. The Lupinranger fighting style. It's just fun to watch and is quite different with all the florishes and trickery and such. The scene where they try to get Red to stop by threatening the other two. Yeah, totally doesn't work. A great moment of character showing us why the Lupinranger may be good guys, but aren't so much heroes. All the little contrasts between the two teams. One team starts with their powers, the other one gets theirs the first episode. One team uses stock transformation, the other team doesn't. Lots of others, but those I didn't already know about. The scene with the two red in civilian garb was quite funny. The Patorangers don't get quite the chance to shine, but hopefully the next episode will give them more focus. All in all a GREAT first episode. I just hope they don't blow it later. |
I'm gonna be honest, I didn't really like this premiere. Like maybe it's just me but it didn't really grab my interest. Granted I will also admit that most of the show wasn't really grabbing my interest from prerelease stuff so YEAH.
Guess I can appreciate them not trying to cram the first episode full of too much stuff, but I dunno I just feel like...it should have had a bit more to it? |
The only thing I felt lacking was the Patoranger's presence, really. We got backstory on the Lupinrangers' reason to fight (Not their dreams, mind you), what the Lupin Collection is, the main villain's goal, and the general setting for both Lupin and Pato.
With that plus the obligatory action sequence, I think this episode used it's time rather wisely. You don't have to like it, I just wonder what more you may have wanted, is all. |
I get the feeling the show will swing it's focus between the two teams episode to episode. Still really liking what I'm seeing. And until the end I didn't realize the symbols for both team make a VS.....

Again I get that it's the first episode, but I still feel that, to me at least, we don't know anything about the two teams yet other than 'Umika is kind of a ditz'? Or at least that's how it feels to me. Of course, still the first episode so like, I'm definitely not actually holding this against the show, that'd be stupid, but as an episode by itself, just feels lacking to me. |
Easily the strongest premiere for a Super Sentai in a very, very long time. I don't think I've seen so much universal praise since Gokaiger, which was just a nostalgia thing.
I'm hooked. Can't wait for episode 02. |
How fitting this would be the Sentai of the year while I'm doing my Lupin the Third marathon.
This episode was a great. All the characters are likeable and not any of the Reds is a shouting idiot. This already makes it better than Kyurangers. |
A strong first but I'll need more before I make a full judgement. I agree that Pat could have got a bit more presence but it will probably swing. Most of my complaints are things that could easily change; Lupin Yellow just seems to be a ditz, Jim Carter is kinda annoying and pointless.
I feel like the benefactor (Lupin's descendant?) could be an interesting twist somewhere down the line. Equally I hope how they both have VS changers is explored |

Anyways, I think I read a rumor somewhere that episodes will alternate between focusing on each team. That could be interesting, but it also could lead to the other team's involvement in each plot feeling rushed. I wonder how they're going to balance both teams each episode. Maybe just a slight focus, like how they did it this episode. That would make next episode more Patoranger-focused, which is fine by me. |

I mean, I don't really mind him being another Sentai villain. Considering how much I loved Genis, I expect him to be at least very entertaining by the end of things. |
Quote:
Besides, I know he's not gonna be anything too special (Hell, technically speaking, he literally pit every monster of his against each other), but I think his laid back style plus his aloof nature is neat. |
Just watched the raw (wonder who's picking up the subs on this one), and I have to say I'm incredibly impressed. In a span of 23 minutes there was enough backstory for one side, a lot of action, and didn't miss a beat. Total GoKaiger feeling out of this, and it makes me hope they'll do a cross up at some point. The uniforms are just FUN. Again, can't wait for the subs to watch again.
|
As someone who watched a lot more older sentai than newer, I'll never get used to this highly talkative henshin devices. But what can I do...
Before watching, I liked everything about the Patranger more than the Lupinranger. After watching the first episode... yeah, I still like the police side more :p What's up with all that jumping around and spinning going on? I like some flippy sh1t, but this episode makes Riccochet vs Will Ospreay looks sluggish lol Also, no more vertical 180º camera rotation, please. |

Bonjour !
That was a good first episode, it didn't feel as rushed as usual. The Persona 5 hype was strong in this one ! Mystic thieves invading casino to retrieve the monster treasure... The Lupinranger also have a Cat's Eye vibe : 3 thieves stealing pieces of a collection for personal reasons. And as a french myself, this is stupidily fun ! Gratuitious french throw here and there, frog monster and mooks with beret and scarf. Speaking cliché, the police chief is a mustached black person, I can't wait for him explaining the Patoranger he's gonna kick their ass because the mayor is kicking his ass. "Comme un cube qui roule" = "Like a rolling cube" "Dé"="Dice" would have been more appropriate, though. |

I found this Sentai premiere to have quite a different energy to it than the previous few years. Having two opposing Super Sentai teams fighting each other should hopefully be an interesting premise.
|
WOW! I freaking loved this! It was weird, the fight choreography was really good and, as everyone is saying, the cinematography was first rate - great use of go-pro and drone cameras! The story was engaging; it's seemingly simple but easy to see expanding into something more complex. The characters were great and already better rounded than Lucky!
When the original images came out, I was skeptical as to how they'd play in motion but - man, did I love the Lupinranger's Batman '66-gone-Batshit '18 aesthetic! Patranger - well, the jury is still out but, the next episode looks like it is going to be even crazier (All the Patrangers...?) So, an aside: the restaurant is the same as Kamen Rider Kabuto, yeah? |
I have a pretty low tolerance for modern Sentai, but I really enjoyed this first episode. I like that they're doing something really different with the premise here and I'm definitely interested to see where they go.
|
The song playing during the fight at the casino sounded an awful lot alike the Kyulette Za Chance song. Lol!!

Hope this is alright, but you can download this over on KRDL!
