Ultraman R/B
I don't think we have a thread for this yet?
Anyway, the show's started, so if you're keeping up with the recent Ultraman series (and you SHOULD BE), it's time to get excited. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh1jgpqlba4 That being said, I feel like this premiere was a bit more clunky in spots than the last few. Some of the exposition was a tiny bit awkward, and with two heroes in one show, and no Kenji Kawai soundtrack backing it up, I'm really looking forward to when they start shortening the stock footage. :lol Still, I had a great time. Katsumi and Isami have a great dynamic already, and the high-energy, borderline comedic tone they're going for is pretty fresh. Orb took a bit to really click with me so I won't be surprised if I'm hailing R/B as the greatest thing since sliced bread in a few months. |
I want to watch it, but right now it seems like it's not getting subbed.

Man, after three straight years of officially subbed Ultramen I just took that for granted. Hopefully this changes soon. |

Maybe they could not get the rights to it to be streamed on CR.

Crisis averted people! I just checked the video on Tsuburaya's YouTube channel (you know, right up there) and there's English captions. Don't know how I didn't notice that before.
I guess this is how we're doing things this year? Although that would mean you're screwed it you don't catch the episode before the next one... |

thank you for the heads up, I'll check it out.

First thoughts:
-Very funny duo, I personally like them. Hopefully, we get more depth later on though. -I still don't like the henshin sequences but its not as bad as I remembered. -How do they know how to use the gear already?? This really bothered me at how skillful they were on the first try. Also, they seem pretty calm for people who just turned into Ultramen. -I now respect all other Ultra shows now-- I rather have a sibling fighting with me than no-one at all XD! -Overall, interesting show. I'll keep watching and hopefully it only gets better from here-- |
To note, the english captions were created by fans
This basically describes the situation going on now. https://twitter.com/darklugiel/statu...08650408779776 |

See companies? This is why fansubs are awesome! And as a side note to TOEI, thank you for turning a blind eye to torrents. |
I'm excited about us getting subtitles. I already watched it, but I'll watch it again!

I really loved this first episode. The two leads have such great chemistry and put a smile on my face. (loved the slap and Katsumi bringing Isami a snack) The series also seems so vibrant and colorful, makes for some great visuals in the fight scenes and adds a nice pop to the typical drama scenes.
Enjoyed this first episode so much more than Geed's first, which I felt had to be one of the weakest first episodes in all of Ultraman. We don't stop to explain the toys here, so it leaves a bit of mystery and lets us focus on a great fight scene. There was so much character added to those scenes, this series feels like it's gonna have a great comedic vibe going for it. |
Kinda off topic, but what if Crunchyroll doesn't get the rights to simulcast the series because maybe Tsuburaya wants to make a deal with Netflix in case the anime movie is a success? Although that one won't premiere until next year so it won't make sense.
Back on topic, well the first episode may be clunky, but even Geed didn't go amazing until like the 6th episode or so. So the best I hope is that they continue the streak because Ultraman is on a roll right now. |
So far the first episode's got me hooked, a light-hearted comedic series is what I expected and so far it's good! Only complaint is the RB Gyro being a letdown because it's gimmick and aesthetics are incredibly pleasing but having it get tugged 3 times to work just sucks imo. Opening's also incredibly catchy but a downgrade after X, Orb and Geed

Really fun first episode. Maybe a little too fast but it sets up dynamics well and it was just plain funny. Can't wait to see more of these dorks.

EDIT: Completely missed Byg42's post on it. Oops :o |
This is the first Ultra I've seen since Nexus. Actually, the only Ultra I've seen since Nexus. Let's see how different it is!
Thoughts I would 100% buy a "Spaced Out" shirt. Where are those Generic "Fortune" effects from? Ninninger? Shinkenger? I recognise them, is all. He got slapped straight outta flashback. How rude. I really like the flashback exposition to when the Ultras arrived. A nice way of demonstating it quickly and effectively. ... How much prior knowledge do I need? What's a Tarou and what's a Ginga? The light, breezy music in their first fight really doesn't feel like it fits. Idk, it just doesn't. Everytime Blue Boy says "Yossha", I shudder in despair. Not related to this series, it's just unlucky. Pretty good fight sequence, in the end. Not sure I get the colour switching, unless it allows them to sell more toys or something. Then I understand perfectly! Overall, I liked this. It pulled me into the show, and I want to see more. It did what it had to do to a newcomer, and I appreciate that! |

Honestly wasn't super wowed by this, felt like a much weaker debut than X, Orb and Geed. That said it was fun, and after some of Geed's heavier themes maybe a bit of fun is what the franchise needs?
The two leads were pretty good though, and its got a unique dynamic that hopefully I'll get behind more. I just hope they shave that transformation sequence down quickly because it lost its appeal far too quickly. |

But yeah first episode was an "Ehhh it's okay" though I am sure it will get better. Also calling it now the villain is either the mother or the scientist that is all over the town and on tv. |

Like, unless you count the crystals on him being a light blue which would literally be called "water color" (水色) in Japanese? Other than that I've got nothing. I honestly think they just wanted to use Ginga to balance out the old-school factor of Taro. Quote:

Fans have always been welcome to translate and make subs. The sharing of the raw video file though is still piracy. So it looks like Tsuburaya found a middle ground to do it easier. Though this does mean little to no typesetting effects. As those can't be done with an SRT with on the fly processing as yet. Which means no karaoke effects either. |
I had fun watching it. It wasn't amazing but it was pretty alright!
The past Ultras on the crystals is kind of annoying because it seems so unnecessary. Ginga = Water doesn't even make sense. |

On the subject of the R/B crystals, why do you guys think they chose Ginga for Ultraman Blu's primary crystal. I mean, Ultraman Taro make sense. This is his 45th anniversary and he uses a lot of fire based attacks... but Ginga? Ultraman Ginga uses a lot of different elements in his attacks but water isn't one of them. What connection to water does he have other then his blue color? The entire situation is made even stranger when you remember that this is also Ultraman Gaia's 20th anniversary. AKA, the anniversary of the first Ultraman season to have two Ultras in the spotlight instead of one. AKA, the season that has not only a red Ultra with an earth motif, the element that often represents fire in addition to land, but also a blue Ultra... with a sea motif. I hope they're planning on doing something special with Gaia and Agul's crystals because otherwise I have no idea how they missed such an obvious connection.
P.S. Despite my complaints above, I really enjoyed this first episde. |
I liked it, it was fun. I like that they weren't immediately proficient fighters and the one brother kept hitting the other brother by accident.
I did like the moment where he's like, "Jeez this kid just wont listen." ..and they all stood there looking at each other for a pause before resuming the fight. They mystery of the disappearing Wife/Mother has me curious. Looking forward to seeing more. |

For the record, the Youtube subtitles are done by a group calling themselves Colour Timer Subs. Genm Corp is also doing R/B (and Orb Origin Saga).
|
So how do you see the fansubs on Youtube? I can't find an option to turn them on at all. Did they get removed?

So, first impression... it's okay? But that's it really.
To me, the first episode felt like something low-budget they make as a web-series to air alongside the real deal. It's not that the effects were cheap or anything, just the overall tone felt like something - yeah, cheap. Especially following up Geed with a huge legacy and a great background for the main character, or Orb with the really fantastic opening for the first episode, R/B feels very run-of-the-mill and more of a toy-advertisement show than it should. They can do better; we've seen it for 3 years straight. I hope the series gets better later, I had some fun watching it but they need to improve on almost everything to keep my interest. Characters are okay but nothing special, action was pretty weak considering that the characters don't know what to do in Ultraman form (which is logical but again, better done in Geed), the lighthearted tone is a bit annoying and a story is non-existent so far. Which is pretty standard for Ultraman but again, Geed did it much better. Also, if they delete the subtitles form their YouTube-videos then that’s their own fault, I have no problem sitting through a few ads to support them but if that’s not an option anymore then I have no problem downloading subtitled vids from Genm. |
Ahaha, Tsuburaya are region blocking R/B for non-asian countries.

I swear there was text after the link! I may have pasted over it.
Anyway, I hope the update isn't that it's going to be on the Toku streaming thing because I can't get that here. |
I'm really sad that they aren't doing Crunchroll again. I liked that arrangement.
