What Was Your First Super Sentai Series You Watched?
What Was Your First Super Sentai Series You Watched?
My first Super Sentai Series is Choushinsei Flashman. |
Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger in 2002. I had a feeling that PR was made in Japan before 2002 going how the footage looked and I remember seeing Japanese Sentai toys at local collector shops.
Go onger, I heard how different it was from RPM so I gave it a watch.
Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger. It was the first series that started airing while I was paying attention to such things, so yeah.
Kyoryou Sentai Zyuranger. I was burnt out on Godzilla but still wanted some Japanese man-in-suit action, and I had heard that Power Rangers was adapted from a Japanese show, so I decided to start there and instantly fell in love.
In all likelihood, Gaoranger due to Gaoranger Vs Super Sentai.
Otherwise, Magiranger. First one I watched to completion was Gekiranger, though. Still the gold standard. |
Saikou no ouja zyuohger!
Gaoranger. It was the first show I was able to easily buy DVDs to (since they were the HK bootlegs) and then it went on from there with raw DVD-Rs of Dairanger and Zyuranger.
Magiranger.
Started watching Jetman after switching from PR once I had finished Lost Galaxy.
Let see since Shinkenger was almost over I decided I would start with the next sentai Goseiger. Saw two episodes and was like nope seem to kiddy even for a kids show. So I decided to give Gokaiger a try when I heard it would be pirate theme. Saw almost all of it but never got to finish it because this was the time MegaUpload/Video got taken down after falling behind on episodes and I was using Tv-Nihon not knowing of any other place to watch it that had an ok quality for me. Zyuohger is so far the only sentai I have seen all of. I do know I will never use Tv-Nihon again unless I have no other choice.
First official Sentai I watched at Gokaiger, though I did watch Akibaranger first since it seemed pretty funny.
Shinkenger. I started to watch riders a few years earlier, but didn't watch any sentai until Shinkenger. I did briefly watched a Turboranger episode along with Ultraman Tiga reruns from one of my travels as a kid. Also, there was that Dino Thunder episode.

I think was Changeman here Brazil.
The first Sentai I saw episodes of were Dekaranger and Dynaman. The first series I watched from start to finish as it was airing was Magiranger. I knew about Sentai since around Go Go V but I didn't actively seek it out until around 2004 when I got high speed internet for the first time.

TV-Nihon started to subbed Sentai around 2003-2004. Not to mention, you had Toku fan subbers way before them seeing that people would watch fan subs on VHS tapes. Before tape trading was a thing, people would have to watch things RAW on select TV channels depending on where you live. It was easier to watch Sentai in 2004 compare to the 80's and 90's.

Back then you only had TV-Nihon working on stuff, so you always knew where to get your subs from. (there was another group early on in Magiranger but TV-Nihon sorta bullied them out of existence) Streaming wasn't a really a thing back then, but I'm really glad to have gotten into stuff in an era where you had to download what you wanted to watch. It gives you more control over what you watch if you're able to just torrent them as opposed to relying on some random website to upload the episode. (YouTube wouldn't really start becoming popular until 2006, so around that time people would cut the episodes up into three part chunks and toss them on the site) That said, 2007~2009 was probably the prime era for being able to download older shows. After Megaupload died, a lot of uploaders went away but before that you had almost every series you could imagine freely available. It was such a stark contrast to late 2004 when I managed to find a low quality real media encode of the first Kamen Rider episode. It was super pixelated but I figured this would be the only way I would ever get to see such an old episode of something. Internet history, especially in the last two decades, is a really cool thing to have witnessed firsthand. I'm 28, so I never really experienced the tape trading scene aside from the few times I would head out to flea markets and some Asian vendors would have Dragon Ball Z episodes that were years away from premiering in the US. |
Shinkenger.
I've judged all Red's by Takeru since, and have on occasion have found them wanting. And just the way the show kept me invested throughout, while even Go-Busters I admit had moments for me where I tuned out for a few weeks. |

Didn't understand a single thing that was happening, but it looked hella cool :lol |

Nihon started with Dekaranger. Now the guy I got my DVD-Rs of Dai and Zyu from subbed only the four Kibaranger episodes to Dai and the Dragon Ceasar 2 parter with the two episodes after that for Zyu. I have no idea why only four episodes from each show were subbed, but boy did it make the video quality look like horseshit. Still, it was better than nothing. Then again, just having raws was better than nothing. Quote:

My first Sentai was Go-Onger it was like on episode 35 when it was airing but I loved it enough to quickly catch up and to check out other shows, so blitzed through Gekiranger as well while keeping up with Go-Onger, and Shinkenger was the first one I watched all the way through while it was airing.
Not really got that many to watch through now at this point. |

Dekaranger.
Still a favorite. |

Comic shops only sold comics or rented VHS tapes, but they were official copies, no bootlegs. |

Bioman was the first. They did very good localized translations into English back then. Also Bioman back to back with Shaider at that time. Although until today I'm still miffed that the Vavilos transformed to its robot forms only a couple of times in the show. lol. https://youtu.be/HxHjRkW3aT8 |
Bioman.
It was either Bioman or Flashman, but I'm not sure which. They both have round-ish helmets, so Lil' baby Angel thought they were the same show for the longest time. :1 I'm inclined to say it was Flashman though, 'cause it's the one I remembered more of between the two.
Mine was Zyuranger, and I just finished watching the show on Shout Factory TV online.
Gokaiger. Still my favourite.
Zyuranger randomly on a whim because I wanted to see the show Power Rangers came from.
I was never even into Power Rangers, much less MMPR (since, you know, I was born in 1996) |
Choushinsei Flashman
In general, Megaranger was the first show I watched a full episode, as for a while I'd watch the first few bits to see the openings and get a feel. In terms of completion, Hurricanger.
In full? Zyuohger. Fun times.
Bioman, when it originally aired in the Philippines with English Dub. I was like 6 at the time. It was looking for this show again that led me to start watching Sentai as an adult. I even had the pleasure to be part of the GUIS team that completed the translation of the series.
Mine was Goseiger. It’s a miracle I’m still here.
