Japanese spiderman 616 Documentary on disney+
Disney plus is doing a documentary about japanese spiderman through marvel 616. It will stream on Disney+.
What do you guys think? I for one am stoked that Disney would acknowledge a spiderman that uses firearms lol. Hopefully, this leads to more exposure for jp spiderman, and maybe the series getting a physical or digital release in western nations. |
Just watched it tonight, and it's pretty good! They talk to a ton of folks who worked on the show, and it's genuinely touching how much the documentary, and the chance to get their story out to a non-Japanese audience, means to them. Very cool that Marvel was interested in exploring the history of this show.

This definitely lends credence to the rumors that Toku Spider-Man will be in Spiderverse 2

Just want to share this fanart by Sakusaku Sakurai https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ESXUO4dW...jpg&name=large
Can't wait to watch the docu |

As for the doc itself, I too thought it was full of emotion and detail in a way I never would've expected. Of all the Tokusatsu which could be addressed in an hour-long retrospective... It's exactly the format someone would want if they were addressing Kamen Rider Black or Gokaiger or Dairanger. It was also chock full of toku references which helped acknowledge it's relations and origins. They didn't bother to use the phrase "tokusatsu" as I recall, but they covered the slack in ways that are excusable. The amount of heart from the people involved is very deep. You really can't look at Toei Spider-Man the same way again! The fact that they made this the very first episode of the 616 series is most gratifying. From a marketing standpoint, it's probably Marvel's oblique way to try and get in on the recent "tokusatsu is a hot sell in the West" trend we've been seeing lately. The Marvel Ultraman comic is definitely symptomatic of that trend (though they didn't reference Ultraman for what are obvious reasons). This will most likely lead to the Toei Spider-Man being licensed for Disney+ as they made reference to the 2009 online release of the series (which I believe is an outdated and defunct release). I wouldn't mind a Blu-Ray disc, but I'm not holding my breath right now. My biggest desire out of all of them is if Leopardon is in Spider-Verse 2! If that assumption is proven to be true, then a figure won't be far behind! Even a small Marvel Legends figure of Toei Spider-Man or Leopardon would be acceptable. They made such a deal of this series never getting past Japan back in the day. If only the Executives back then could've gotten a glimpse of the future... |

Nice to hear they went at the history of Toei Spider-Man with respect and that it's essentially a way to get more people into the concept of what it was.
Disney and Marvel have been slowly showing more love to that side of Spidey's history ever since his appearance in the Spider-Verse event comic. Whether it's due to a popular character under their branch having stuff marketable to the growing popularity of anime and its audience or cause they think the character and his world still have potential worth revisiting, I'll gladly take it. |
Yeah, I watched it. It's good! I was dreading it being a "look how WaCkY Japan is lmao!!" type of thing, but they really treat it with respect and everyone they interviewed was proud of what they did.
Now put the series on Disney+! |
I thought it was awesome!! Wish they talked about Amazoness some more but oh well. It definitely seems like they're prepping audiences for his eventual appearance in Spiderverse2. I'm not much of a Legends collector these days but anything from that show will be an instant purchase from me.
