Unpopular Tokusatsu Opinions
Since this is spreading like a wildfire online, and since I can’t find a similar thread within 10 pages of the forum, I thought I’d start spreading this here. I’ll start by sharing both my opinions and some I agree with (which will be marked with speech marks).
Tokusatsu Unpopular opinions. Kamen Rider: They reuse modern monsters too much. Wizard: ''Why y’all mad about this show it’s great and Haruto was the last protagonist that didn’t start out as a Generic Good Boy before Sento'' Gekiranger: This show tries to escalate things way too soon and the episodes after the true poison arc devolve into a formula that grows old really quickly. Den-O: This show’s character development and power balance are nowhere near as good as people claim it is. Ninninger: ''Can be a fun series and thought it had some interesting messages and interesting things to say.'' Gokaiger: Most of the anniversary elements are really poorly handled, especially in episodes by Junko Komura (which is sadly, most of them). Fiveman: ''Over exaggerated hatedom'' Ryuki: 'Every arc ends with things resetting back to where they were at the start, which really hurts the rider battle concept.' OOO: ‘’It’s very largely an average series with a pedestrian cast. Also Enji and Ankh’s relationship wasn’t touching or healthy. LupinPat: The cast is not imbalanced. In fact, it’s the most balanced cast in the last seven years. W: This show established a lot of the WORST conventions of modern rider. Operation Overdrive: ''If other previously panned or mixed bag seasons can be re-evaluated or have folks admitting they’re better than originally given credit for, I don’t see why Overdrive has to be treated like an open and shut case.'' |
My unpopular opinion is that...
... Eh, nah. I could go on about Power Rangers stuff and maybe Kiva but my experience is that these types of threads are never the best place for discussion and tend to get really unhealthy and argumentative and vent-y really quickly. So I guess that's my unpopular opinion? That an 'unpopular opinion' discussion topic is never enjoyable and almost always really dour and edgy? |
Fiveman doesn't have a hatedom. It's just acknowledged as close to being the death knell for Sentai.
And I need a citation for the LuPat reasoning, because the Patrangers sitting on their asses only appearing for fight scenes while the Lupinrangers going through a solo story arc doesn't resonate 'balance' to me. |
Unpopular opinions? Well, I mean, if you want, I could just quote like at least 50% of everything I've ever posted on this forum...

But, you know, on the other hand, I seem to recall this guy with a cool sword and frequent trouble enunciating words who liked to say that we should fight fate, so everyone feel free to prove me wrong! I'd love it if we could all have a nice healthy, respectful discussion where we all learn to mutually understand differing and uncommon perspectives. I also don't feel like I can really contribute that much, though. Most thoughts I could put out there, I have a million times already. |
Kenzaki is probably going "It was just that one time..." while he puts on his 6th spade themed accessory :lol

My only real gripe with Kamen Rider is the treatment or lack of women in a lot of the series.
|
Most of the Power Rangers shows that I've seen are pretty bad. I think there are only two or maybe three that I consider being pretty good or watchable. I always prefer Sentai over Power Rangers similar to how I do with Macross over Robotech.
|
Akira Date is a horrible character and the worst part of OOO.
The Neo-Saban Era has its merits and its issues are blown way out of proportion by the PR fanbase. Netflix Ultraman was boring. That's about all I got. |
Too much generic cgi, too much sentai members,, less Gundam/Transformers-style mechas and anime-looking actors.

Hmm, let's see...
I don't understand why Kiva gets so much hate. Kamen Rider would be better if they stopped forcing the "rider" element of it. I don't mind not seeing motorcycles. Ninninger wasn't that bad. It wasn't anything special, but it had cool suits, good fights, and fun MOTW episodes. That's what draws me to toku, so I was satisfied. I'd rather watch "boring" fights than a flashy fight rendered in god-awful CGI. Megaranger was boring. Muteki Shogun is ugly. I like the Japanese castle inspiration, but I don't think the design worked. ...that's all I've got |
I don't really have a lot of opinions but good luck to everyone here! try to keep it like actually civil and not passive aggressive!
|
I think Kamen Rider 001 is vastly overated form.
Ghost Mugen Damashii >>>>>>>> Grateful Damashii Final Form Designs are underappericated |
Too much generic monster/villains designs and too much generic stories.
|
Collectible gimmick items and huge numbers of forms are just tiring. Despite some of my favorite Kamen Rider seasons taking them to ridiculous extremes (OOO and Build especially), I'd rather cut way back on the number of forms and only have collectibles when they contribute to the plot.

I don't really like it when Jam Project performs songs for Garo. I prefer the musical first openings by far.
Deep down, I have to admit, I resent MMPR. I hate that it is the nost popular season and every season tried to recapture its success. And because of its success also contributed PR into being a joke in the eyes of general audience. |
-Kiva doesn't get the credit it deserves, especially considering people surely must at least prefer Wataru to Ryotaro, I mean some of the scenes of Ryotaro being ''unlucky'' were just cringeworthy IMO.
-I REALLY can't watch W. I'm sorry, but for whatever reason, I have zero concept of why it is so popular among Western fans. People liking it a bit maybe I could tolerate, but how it's like the best ever idk. -Though I haven't seen Fiveman I think I've actually liked what little I've seen. -Though Gaoranger's not one of the greats, I did actually find it surprisingly good and Silver's first transformation is just epic! -Mighty Morphin is overrated. Yeah, it does kind of deserve some credit but when series exist like In Space,Time Force and RPM it really doesn't cut it. I largely prefer Zeo. -The series post-RPM are literally split down the middle for me. I strongly dislike Samurai and both Megaforces(even more unpopular is that I hated the first part of Megaforce even more than the second, the first was just MMPR badly copied whereas at least the second had some slight interest!) but funnily enough everything since Dino Charge has at least been good on some level for me, though not of course massively amazing. |

I feel like the only way females are treated better, is if Koichi Sakamoto direct it. Granted, he is Japanese Michael Bay and the females tend to turn into eye candy (whether you love it or not), but I guess it's better than anything. |
No evil plans.
|
Power Rangers "teenagers with attitude" trope stems from elements of 1980s Sentai, and a lot of problems facing modern Sentai is Power Rangers influence on making it more pre-school kid friendly and dumbing down the mecha combinations for a younger international audience. The circular influence of Sentai-Power Rangers-Sentai is like a snake eating its own tail. It might be best if the two separate for a bit.
|
Less details on characters and plot.
|
Brave, Snipe and Lazer are all way more interesting than Ex-Aid.
Also Kuroto Dan isn't the best part of the show, despite being both great comic relief and initially a fitting villain for the season. |
Lack of ranger and man terms.
|

I feel like oddly enough Ex-aid and Ghost did this okay, since they only had 10 (11 if we count juju burger) and 15 as the base amount of their collectables, so it wasn't too much. Ghost also had the collectable still matter as the series got deeper into the story, so there's that too. |
Too much generic plots.
|
I just remembered this. I don't like Sakurajima Ichigo, and don't really understand why it is so 'popular'? I mean original Ichigo suit rarely get any love than Sakurajima, and even the Power Up suit was based on Sakurajima.
I would live it if for the 50th anniversary they make another new suit for Ichigo that based on his original look. |
The Sakurajima suit is popular?
I always figured it was the red headed step child for Ichigou's suits. And I had just thought the powered up suit was just referencing all his suits :lol |
Too much generic mechas.
|
Quote:
And while I don't know if it can be considered as an example, the reboot Ichigo seen in Zi-O's Final Stage was in his The Next suit, which is based more than Sakurajima. It's a shame because The First Ichigo looks far more beautiful. |
Ah, that reminds me of another one I can add to this topic: I actually like the "The First" Suits for KRs 1 and 2 more than the originals. I felt they were great (at the time) modern updates to their classic looks, as well as helping to make the two easier to tell apart.
Granted, I've never heard anyone say they out and out hate the movie suits, but still. |

I'll go on record to say I like the Sakurajima suit and it is my favorite of all the Ichigo variants.
I prefer the white belt over the red version by a longshot. I've also never been a fan of the double stripes on the arms. I suspect the design of Ichigo we see more often now (silver gloves) was an attempt to make him look more heroic for kids. First appearance Kamen Rider as well as Sakurajima look like they could be villians, which is in keeping with Ishinomori's idea of a hero born from something originally created for evil. |
No epic BGMs.

I'm sick of the whole secondary riders personally being the whole "I'm the asshole antihero that is a jerk to everyone and becomes friends later on" cliche. Birth is one of my favorite secondary riders because he felt like a chill guy and was not OOO's arch enemy.
|
Beast Morphers is still a Neo Saban season. Praising Hasbro for Beast Morphers other than the toys isn't really warranted.
Although to be fair you can clearly tell Dino Fury is going to be the first full fledged Hasbro season. |

^Oh yeah, I almost forgot about Beast. I enjoy a good anti-hero secondary rider like Knight, Accel, and Zeronos because those characters have more going for them. Secondary riders like Specter was so bland because he follows the typical cliche anti hero from Kamen Rider and other Shonen anime.
